On August 13, Aveanna Healthcare (NASDAQ:AVAH) held its second-quarter earnings call, and the tone was different from prior quarters spent explaining away a caregiver shortage. Revenue climbed 13.7% year over year to roughly $670 million, and every one of the company's three divisions grew. But the headline moment came when CEO Jeffrey Shaner announced that California's 2027 budget will finally include a meaningful pediatric private duty nursing rate increase, effective January 1, 2027, closing out an advocacy push that took four years and now touches all 32 of Aveanna's private duty states.
Aveanna's core strategy for the past several years has been aligning caregiver capacity with the payers willing to pay for it, and the numbers on the call suggest that bet is paying off. Home health and hospice revenue rose 14.8% year over year, private duty services grew 14.0%, and medical solutions added 9.4%, with adjusted EBITDA up 8% to $95.4 million. On the government side, Aveanna landed seven state rate enhancements by the second quarter and expects more once state budget processes wrap up in the third quarter, with California standing as the biggest prize of all. On the payer side, private duty services now has 37 preferred payer agreements after adding three in the quarter, and those agreements cover 64% of the division's managed care volume, up from 60% in the first quarter. Home health has already hit its full-year goal of 50 preferred payers, with episodic admissions running at 81% of the mix and episodic volume growth of 18.5%.
Management also pointed to CMS's proposed home health rule, published July 1, and its finalized hospice rule, published August 6, as supportive of stable industry rates. Layered on top is the Family First Homecare acquisition, closed in early June and on track to finish integrating by late in the fourth quarter, plus guidance raised to more than $2.68 billion in revenue and more than $365 million in adjusted EBITDA for the year.
Not every figure on the call moved in the company's favor. Private duty services revenue per hour rose just 1.7% to $44.62, while the segment's cost of revenue per hour jumped 7.8% to $31.74, and the spread per hour landed at $12.88 as caregiver wage increases continue working their way through the business. Management also noted that the year-ago quarter in that same segment included about $9 million in nonrecurring favorable items, which makes the current growth rate a harder comparison than it first appears. Much of the good news still depends on government timing that Aveanna does not control: the California rate increase is pending final details from the Medi-Cal department, and additional state wins hinge on budget cycles still playing out. The Family First Homecare deal was funded entirely out of cash on hand, and its integration is not expected to finish until late in the fourth quarter, so the returns on that spending have not fully shown up yet.

TMZ.com cited a statement released by John's agent, Mike Maguire, saying the pitcher passed away at his home in Lakewood Ranch, Fla., surrounded by his wife, Cheryl, and family. John had been in hospice care in Bradenton, Fla.
The New York Yankees released a statement on Sunday following the news of John's passing.
"The New York Yankees mourn the passing of Tommy John, who was a bedrock of our rotation during his time in pinstripes and a longtime favorite of Yankees fans," the statement read. John remains a notable exclusion from Cooperstown, between his successful career and presence in the operating room that changed baseball.

Recently, Terre Haute native and former MLB pitcher Tommy John thanked the New York Yankees and the fans who cheered him on over his career as he enters hospice care. Bruce Rosselli, a part-owner and general manager for the Terre Haute Rex, who has hosted a Tommy John night in the past to honor his legacy and impact on the game, and a friend of Tommy John, was shocked to hear the news of Tommy John's health.
"I was saddened to hear that," Rosselli said. "The last few weeks, I've been speaking with him, encouraging him and letting him know Terre Haute is behind him, the Terre Haute Rex are playing for him. Things like that to encourage him."
Tommy John played 26 seasons in the MLB with six different teams and recorded over 2,000 strikeouts while collecting nearly 300 wins as a pitcher.
"In the modern era of the 1960s, 70s, he was all over the map with Major League Baseball, getting drafted in 1961," Rosselli said.

Nelson died Sunday at the age of 86, his family announced. The Dallas Morning News reported Nelson suffered a stroke three weeks earlier and had been in hospice care in the Dallas area.
Nelson retired with 1,335 career wins, which remain more than any coach in NBA history other than Gregg Popovich. While he didn't win a championship or even reach the NBA Finals as a head coach, Nelson was a key cog on ******* le-winning Celtics teams in the 1960s and 1970s.

TikTok creator Sydney Towle, who documented her battle with a rare form of bile duct cancer for more than 1 million followers, has died. She was 26.
Towle's family announced her death in a post shared on her social media accounts Thursday, Aug. 6, one day after she died.
"We will always love you so much Sydney," the caption under the post read. "I am so proud of how hard you fought. I love you."
The post included a photo of Towle on a mountaintop alongside the message: "Rest in Peace Sydney Towle. An endless ray of sunshine. A daughter, a sister and friend to so many."
The announcement came a day after Towle's brother, Austin Towle, shared that she has entered hospice care, saying she was surrounded by family and friends as her yearslong battle with cancer neared its final stages.

Dory Funk Jr., the former NWA World Heavyweight Champion whose influence extended from international main events to the training of future WWE stars, has died. He was 85.
Funk died on August 4 in Ocala, Florida, according to his wife, Marti Funk. She told the Ocala Gazette that he had been receiving hospice care.
Marti confirmed her husband's death directly to the local newspaper, which had interviewed the couple at their Ocala home in January. They had been together for 46 years and married for 40.
The family has not publicly disclosed a cause of death.
"He was such a good guy," Marti said before repeating the description more forcefully. The family plans to hold a private ceremony honoring Funk's life. A public memorial is expected on Thanksgiving Day for Dory, his younger brother Terry Funk and several of their longtime **** ociates from **** an.

A Wolverhampton Wanderers' fan group has launched a special shirt to mark the club's 150th anniversary season.
Four friends who are part of Old Gold Pack said they spent months bringing their concept to life to mark the anniversary in 2027 and although it had been a lot of work, it was "an absolute joy to get it done".
The majority of the profits from the sale of the shirt are to be donated to Wolverhampton hospice charity Compton Care.
Kieran Newey from the group said to see fans wearing the shirt as the new season kicks off will be "crazy".
"We've always been really big fans of football culture and we'd always talked about designing a football shirt," he said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kevin O'Malley, who owned and operated minor league baseball teams in California, was a part-owner of the San Diego Padres for years and a son of former Los Angeles Dodgers president Peter O'Malley, died Tuesday. He was 50.
He died from complications of sepsis while in hospice care in Santa Barbara, the elder O'Malley said.
Kevin O'Malley was in New York on business last fall when he fell ill. He returned to Los Angeles for further care, but his health gradually declined, his father told The ***** ociated Press.
His grandfather, Walter O'Malley, owned the Dodgers from 1944-79 and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame as an executive who expanded MLB to the West Coast. Peter O'Malley was president of the Dodgers from 1970-98.
Kevin O'Malley worked in the Dodgers organization at Great Falls, Montana, and Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida, in the late 1990s. He was co-founder and owner of Top of the Third Inc., which owned and operated the Stockton Mudville Nine and Visalia Rawhide, minor league teams in Central California.

He has run 121 miles in 11 days so far - his longest being 19 miles in one day - and raised £1,635 towards a £2,000 target.
