What he still does not know is whether he will get to finish it where he wants to finish it: standing on a Major League mound.
Verlander is expected to throw off a mound Saturday as he continues working back from left hip inflammation and a left hamstring strain, according to MLB's latest Tigers injury update. If his body responds, the 43-year-old could advance to a rehab ***** ignment and potentially pitch for Detroit before his retirement becomes official at the end of the season.
That makes Saturday considerably more important than a routine September bullpen session.

ESPN College GameDay hasn't been the same since saying goodbye to the legendary Lee Corso one year ago. The 91-year-old Corso bid farewell to the iconic college football pregame show, but recently reconnected with his good friend Kirk Herbstreit.
This week, Herbstreit revealed that he met up with Corso before the start of the season, and shared some details from their emotional reunion.

Steven Spielberg may soon say goodbye to his equestrian ranch in Los Angeles.
Closer has learned that the famed Hollywood filmmaker, 79, has listed his seven-bedroom, 11-bathroom property for just under $30 million after purchasing the ranch back in 1999 for $5.35 million.
The 6,219-square-foot property was at the center of controversy shortly after he and wife Kate Capshaw made the purchase because the director wanted to build a five-story horse-riding ring despite pushback from their Brentwood neighbors.
"It's just astounding and obnoxious," land-use attorney John Murdock, who represented several residents at the time, told the ***** ociated Press in 2000. "They're cutting out half the hillside to put in this riding ring … the structure is completely alien to the area."
The riding ring was intended to be a 27,000-square-foot building that would've been about six times the size of a typical home in the area and cost more than $7 million to build, according to the AP.

As you may have noticed, my posts around Backing The Pack have become less frequent of late. My work and family commitments have become greater, and those are the areas where my focus should be. I just don't have the time necessary to meet SB Nation's demands for the number of posts required to continue this side gig.

Well, there is something about first love. You don't forget it so easily, especially when the story begins with a suspenseful, romance-novel twist. That was certainly the case for social media star Alix Earle and New York Giants wide receiver Braxton Berrios. Earle originally sparked curiosity back in 2023 when she casually introduced him to her followers as the mysterious "NFL man" she was making sushi with. After nearly three years together, the fan-favorite couple officially called it quits last December.
As Earle decided to move on from that chapter of her life, she rented a big truck to move out of her ex-boyfriend's house two months after the breakup. With her best friend Sally in the passenger seat and Earle behind the wheel, the content creator discussed what went wrong between the couple.
"There's a ton of pressure that comes from, like, having a public relationship and sharing so much and people loving our relationship. But we were both busy in our careers and doing long distance at the time. We weren't talking as much. We were barely communicating. President Donald Trump offered a blunt six-word response to news that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are relocating to Britain. The remark, made in the Oval Office on Wednesday, immediately drew attention. Kai Trump is starting a brand new phase in her life. The granddaughter of Donald Trump is beginning her college career at the University of Miami, where she'll be playing for the school's golf team while pursuing her education. In a new vlog on her YouTube channel, Kai shared a look at her first week as a freshman, documenting some of her classes and new routines. First, though, she had to say an emotional goodbye to her friends and family.
