Matt Bell, 52, has been farming for more than half his life in central North Carolina. He grows soybeans, corn and wheat and raises beef cattle on more than 1,000 acres. But Bell, who voted for President Trump, says soaring prices for fuel, fertilizer, and equipment are hurting his farm and leading some of his fellow farmers to consider calling it quits once this growing season ends.
"I've done this 34 years. I have never worried and stressed like I have the last year," Bell told CBS News in an interview on Wednesday at his farm in Kings Mountain, North Carolina.
Bell has been forced to make significant changes to his operation as a result of the high costs. He's shifting some of his acreage, trying to stretch out the lifespan of his equipment and producing his own fertilizer. His children have also opened up a storefront where visitors can pick pumpkins and take hayrides in the fall. But Bell is still feeling the pinch.
"We've cut everything we can cut," he said. "The last several years in agriculture have been terrible, and we have, you know, just cut the fat anywhere we could. But we're just getting to the point now there's nothing left to cut. You cannot run without fuel. You cannot run without fertilizer. You have to have that."

Moerus Capital Management LLC, an investment management firm, recently released its "Worldwide Fund " second-quarter 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. The fund navigated a highly bifurcated investment environment in the second quarter of 2026, as investor enthusiasm for artificial intelligence and technology drove a sharp rally in growth stocks while capital moved away from more traditional, value-oriented areas. The Fund's Institutional Class returned 0.14% in Q2, compared with 14.49% for the MSCI ACWI ex USA and 14.93% for the MSCI ACWI, while its first-half return stood at 5.37%, versus 13.69% and 11.25%, respectively, for the two benchmarks. The relative underperformance was primarily driven by the Fund's limited exposure to Information Technology as semiconductor and AI-related stocks surged, while its Energy holdings also gave back some earlier gains as oil prices declined; however, the Fund benefited from several energy-related investments during the first half. Looking ahead, Moerus views the extreme gap between expensive AI-focused areas and neglected parts of the market as an opportunity, maintaining its long-term deep-value approach of investing in unpopular businesses and ******* ets at significant discounts to intrinsic value and using market volatility to identify potentially attractive investments. In addition, please check the Fund's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Moerus Worldwide Fund highlighted stocks like CNH Industrial N.V. (NYSE:CNH). CNH Industrial N.V. manufactures and sells specialized machines and services for the farming and construction industries. The one-month return of CNH Industrial N.V. (NYSE:CNH) was 30.96% while its shares traded between $9.00 and $14.46 over the last 52 weeks. On September 7, 2026, CNH Industrial N.V. (NYSE:CNH) stock closed at approximately $14.40 per share, with a market capitalization of about $22.02 billion.
Moerus Worldwide Fund stated the following regarding CNH Industrial N.V. (NYSE:CNH) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"We also initiated a position in shares of CNH Industrial N.V. (NYSE:CNH) in H1. CNH Industrial manufactures and sells specialized machines and services for the farming and construction industries under the Case IH and New Holland brands. As AI and automation reshape workers' daily lives, they are also reshaping which jobs can expect major gains and losses over the next decade, according to new projections from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The U.S. economy is expected to add 5.9 million jobs, an increase of 3.5%, between 2025 and 2035, but growth will be slower than it was in the previous decade, according to data released Aug. 27. Total employment is projected to increase from 170.3 million to 176.2 million, with healthcare, technology and renewable energy expected to lead those gains.
Artificial intelligence, a major player in who sees gains and losses, is also driving demand for workers in fields such as data ***** ysis, cybersecurity and software development. But federal data predicts that increased automation will reduce demand for many office support, sales and production jobs.
Administrative jobs, such as clerks, typists and data entry specialists, are expected to take an especially hard hit with a 4% drop in employment, the largest projected in any category, thanks to what the Labor Department called "continued integration of automation tools, including those powered by AI."
Sales, along with the farming, fishing and forestry industries, are also expected to see losses.

NFL All-Pro cornerback Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner is suing a Farmington Hills construction company for $1.4 million claiming breach of contract and fraud related to the planned renovation of a Detroit investment property.
Sanborn Construction Group has also sued Gardner, claiming the Detroit native and former Detroit King High School star misled the company and breached the contract because he wanted his "friends" to serve as general contractor on the project.
The dueling lawsuits center on the vacant 1920s era Bonita apartments building at 69 Seward Street. The 44-unit building is just west of Woodward, about five blocks north of the Fisher Building.
Nick Sanborn, CEO of Sanborn Construction Group, declined to comment on the case.
"We filed our breach of contract lawsuit first and our complaint is public info," Sanborn told the Free Press in an email. "Other than that we have no comment."

One of the most enduring principles of liberty is owning property. "America's Founders understood clearly that private property is the foundation not only of prosperity but of freedom itself," Roger Pilon, founder of the Cato Institute's Center for Constitutional Studies, wrote in 2017.
And yet all too often, bureaucrats put unnecessary rules and regulations on how we can use our property. One couple is fighting with their town over the right to just let people go for a walk on their land.*
Charles Copley met his wife, Elizabeth, at Oxford University, while they were each pursuing a Ph.D. After living a few years in his native South Africa, they moved with their children to Connecticut to be closer to Elizabeth's family.
Wanting to make the area their permanent home, they purchased two plots of rural land in Roxbury totaling 50 acres in 2022. They hoped not only to live on the land but to really make it their own: farming, planting, and otherwise tailoring the property to their family while protecting and preserving its natural beauty.
They hired a forester to draw up a 10-year forest management plan, which the town approved, and then began removing invasive species and cutting miles of walking trails throughout all 50 acres.

Here are five story lines to watch going into the 2026 prep football season.
5. Will Jackson Lumen Christi head coach Herb Brogan surpass John Herrington as the state's all-time winningest coach?
In his 47th season as head coach, Brogan enters with 432 career wins, which is 11 behind Herrington, the former Farmington Hills Harrison legendary head coach. Brogan surpassed former Birmingham Brother Rice head coach Al Fracassa for second on the all-time list last year. Last season, Lumen Christi went 11-3 in adding to its state record total of 15 state championships.
If Lumen Christi repeats that win total, Brogan will tie Herrington. There are games against bigger schools like Toledo Central Catholic, Toledo St. Francis De Sales, Detroit Country Day and Dearborn Divine Child, but if Lumen Christi can win at least two of those, avoid slip-ups in other games and go on another championship run, it's possible Brogan could celebrate breaking the record and a state championship at the same time in November at Ford Field.

As a tractor driver cultivated a California grape vineyard in June 1978, he made a bleak discovery: a shallow grave.
The human remains unearthed in Arvin, a small farming city southeast of Bakersfield, California, remained unidentified for nearly 50 years. Now, thanks to advances in DNA technology, authorities have identified the victim as Michelle Louise Collier, 15, of Fresno, California, according to the Kern County Sheriff's Office.
"(Michelle) disappeared 48 years ago, and it was only recently that we knew where she was," Collier's older sister, Cynthia Dunbar, said during a July 28 news conference. "At least with this information, my family has some closure."
Kern County Sheriff's Office Detective Ashley Thompson called the identification "a significant milestone" but investigators are still seeking answers about how Collier died.
"Identifying Michelle is an important step, but the circumstances surrounding her death remain unknown," Thompson said at the news conference.

FARMINGTON — Most caddies are credited by top amateur and professional golfers for helping them select the right clubs and read greens, but for 20-year-old Ashley Lam on Thursday at Oakridge Country Club, it was a little piece of advice her 22-year-old brother Sean Lam gave her that just might have meant the difference between winning and losing the 36-hole championship match of the 120th Utah Women's Amateur.
Four times heavy underdog Ashley Lam took the lead over six-time champion Kelsey Chugg, 35, on a buzzard-hot day in Davis County, but each time Chugg came roaring back, including from a three-hole deficit on the 32th, 34th and 35th holes to square the match heading into the 36th hole, No. 18 at Oakridge.
So how was Lam able to keep her composure after losing the big lead in a four-hole stretch?
"It was just my brother telling me to lock in and just stop being a little baby," she said, then added that she wouldn't take that kind of tough love from anybody but him. Sean Lam played golf briefly for Glendale College in Arizona and now works for Callaway.
"It was a really great experience, just because he's been with me all throughout, just my whole childhood playing golf with him," an emotional Ashley Lam said after her big brother playfully roughed her up a bit to congratulate her on the 18th green before the traditional trophy ceremony took place.

Lucy Hale has announced the death of her father, Preston Hale.
In an emotional obituary posted to Instagram on Monday, the Pretty Little Liars actress confirmed her dad passed away "suddenly" on 17 July. He was 68.
"My dad was mind-numbingly funny, sensitive, and deeply kind. He adored his family, my stepsisters, all his grandbabies, his dogs (and mine), his lifelong friends, and my stepmom, Stacy - the love of his life," she wrote alongside a slideshow of throwback photos. "He was so proud of his career in farming and of his hometown of Milan, Tennessee."
Lucy went on to describe Preston as a "true Southern man" who loved fishing, hunting, golfing, and farming. She also reflected on the "deep soul bond" she shared with her father.
"Our last conversation was beautiful. The last time I saw him was beautiful. Our last phone call was perfect," the 37-year-old recalled. "My sister Maggie happened to be in town visiting me in L.A. when we got the call. She was sitting no more than three feet away from me. That's something only God and my dad could have orchestrated. I can't imagine receiving that call alone or walking through these first surreal days by myself."
To conclude the heartfelt message, Lucy emphasised that she has been relying on her "spirituality and my beliefs" at this "incredibly difficult time".

As artificial intelligence fuels a massive data center construction boom across America, some landowners are cashing in on life-changing offers while others are refusing to sell at any price.
That contrast was on full display in Kentucky and Pennsylvania. In one case, a farming family reportedly turned down a $26 million offer to preserve land that has been in their family for generations. In the other, a struggling farm became the source of a $22 million windfall that transformed a couple's financial future.

A Reddit poster recently turned to the internet for advice about his parents. The original poster (OP) is worried about their retirement outlook: they have almost no savings and are struggling to cover their basic bills.
He wants to know where they could realistically live and what concrete steps they should take to build some measure of financial security. Here is what the OP shared, along with strategic options his parents can consider to build a more sustainable retirement despite their limited **** ets.
According to the OP, his parents had limited formal education. His father suffered a disabling back injury at his farming job and was forced to stop working. He received a $100,000 settlement, which was not nearly enough to bridge the gap to Social Security eligibility, but the couple lived on that money while waiting to qualify.
They now collect a combined $2,200 per month from Social Security. His mother earns a small amount babysitting, but opportunities are scarce in their small rural town, and she spent years at home raising children rather than building a career. Because they never understood retirement savings, they have no nest egg and no pension from the father's former employer.
The parents carry a $1,500 monthly mortgage and a $300 car payment, and they simply cannot cover their bills on the $2,200 Social Security income plus the mother's occasional babysitting earnings. The OP is asking whether they should sell the home and, if so, where they should move to stretch their limited income as far as possible.

SEATTLE — Make no mistake: Mauricio Pochettino is pure Argentine.
"I am 200 percent Argentine," he said, beaming. "I am not going to lie."
He grew up in a farming village some 250 miles west of Buenos Aires, launched his career in Rosario and wore La Albiceleste's colors in a World Cup. Passion spouts when he speaks about the love for his country and everything it has brought to sports and culture.
His additional loyalties are with Europe, where he played and coached across decades.
But on the most American of holidays, as the coach of a U.S. World Cup team that, through style and substance, has rekindled national spirit and helped unite a divided land, Pochettino continues embracing his adoptive country.

New Mexico's forests are dying faster than at any time on record. In 2025, the state mapped 209,000 acres of trees killed by bark beetles and other insects, which was more than a 200% increase over the year before, according to a newly released report from the New Mexico Forestry Division. And the main impetus for that arboreal death was the state's dwindling water supply.
"At the beginning of January 2025, 35% of the state was in moderate drought and 20% in severe drought," the report read. "By the end of December 2025, 71% of the state was in moderate drought and 52% was in severe drought."
According to the report, New Mexico recorded its second-warmest year on record. The lower Rio Grande, the river that has sustained farming communities in the southern part of the state for centuries, is now a river of sand most of the year, as the aquifer underneath is dropping by more than a foot each year. The issue has to do with the dry conditions creating the perfect environment for bark beetles to kill trees in record numbers.
And 2026 is shaping up to be no different. "We had a bleak winter and little to no snowpack, and there are areas that are currently experiencing bark beetle attack," said Victor Lucero, forest health program manager for the New Mexico Forestry Division. Drought stress, he said, is the primary condition that leaves trees defenseless: stripping them of the sustained sap flow that is their only natural shield against infestation. "Things may change with respect to tree mortality if things remain hot and dry," Lucero said. The one scenario that could turn the tide: "If the summer monsoon rains arrive as predicted, this may improve the resilience of live trees to withstand bark beetle attack."
Now, just two miles of the Mexican border in the Chihuahuan Desert, Oracle and OpenAI are building one of the largest data centers in the country.

Joe Jonas isn't giving up on his acting career yet.
"There's a couple projects that I've been developing that I'm excited about that I would put myself in and find the time if it worked," the singer-songwriter, 36, tells USA TODAY. "I'm always up for the challenge, you know? It can be very humbling going on auditions, but I think it's good to make yourself have that feeling of rejection therapy, you know?"
In addition to the platinum-selling Jonas Brothers band, Joe and siblings Kevin and Nick cohost the "Hey Jonas!" podcast. That's where Joe made headlines when he dished about an audition for a role on the Apple TV+ show "The Morning Show." According to Jonas, he "crashed and burned."
"It was literally like, I don't even know what I'm auditioning for," he recalled on the podcast. "It was such a bad audition."
Jonas, who checks in from the UK via Zoom, is currently promoting a more familiar project: music. The artist cowrote and sings "The Cozy Anthem," which will be featured in the mobile farming game Hay Day. Jonas' new single will also help launch a two-week virtual music festival taking place across social media and in the game's app.

Hasan Piker put SXSW London on blast Monday for not defending him after he and uncle Cenk Uygur were banned from entering the United Kingdom over previous criticisms they’ve made against Israel.
“SXSW was a minor part of my trip to the U.K.,” Piker wrote on X Monday. “They totally didn’t defend me or Cenk at all, they’re actual f–king losers and I will never work with them for the rest of my life. If you bought a ticket expecting to see me you should demand a refund.”
Kicking off Monday for the second year in London, the Austin, Texas-founded culture and arts festival was due to have Piker speak this week in conversation with British journalist and libertarian communist political activist Ash Sarkar.
In a separate video on his Twitch page, Piker went in harder on the fest, calling SXSW’s statement “disgusting.”
“It’s not like they’re paying me, right? I’m not getting paid by SXSW to do this, right? It’s actually really insane. I’m doing this as a f—king favor and they’re literally farming donations off of my image off of my likeness,” he said. “Then it’s crazy that they just, once the Home Office intervened and revoked my visa, when the Home Office intervened and revoked my visa, SXSW’s statement was disgusting.
