San Francisco Giants third-base coach Ron Wotus didn't hesitate to let umpire Alan Porter hear his two cents on Saturday, less than 24 hours removed from Porter tossing Giants manager Tony Vitello.
During the lineup card exchange before Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Arizona Diamondbacks in San Francisco, Wotus said his piece.
Porter sent him to the showers, too.
Wotus, a longtime Giants staffer who replaced a reassigned Hector Borg in the third-base coaching box earlier this season, had a front-row seat to a call that drew ire amid a five-run D-backs third inning that played a significant role in San Francisco's 10-6 defeat on Friday.
Nolan Arenado hit a chopper down the third-base line. Although the ball landed in foul territory beyond the infield, third-base umpire Alex MacKay ruled it fair since he believed it traveled over the bag. The play couldn't be reviewed, and as reported by MLB.com, it really wasn't until Tim Tawa launched a subsequent three-run homer that Vitello began his outburst.

Tony Vitello is climbing the ejections list quickly this week, getting tossed twice in three days and giving the San Francisco Giants' manager five overall, tied for second most in the league.
Are umpires showing less patience with Vitello, who has no previous pro experience, than they are with other managers? He appeared to do little to earn an ejection in the Giants' 10-6 loss to the Diamondbacks on Friday night at Oracle Park, while home-plate umpire Alan Porter, who tossed him, was in the midst of a tough night - Porter had nine ball-strike calls overturned on challenges, and also called a clear third strike a ball in the third, keeping Lars Nootbar alive for a double that started Arizona's five-run inning.
Vitello may have earned his ejection Wednesday against the Reds when he disputed a check-swing call a little more strenuously, but he seemed to do no more than yell that Nolan Arenado's double to left in that third inning was foul along with a gesture indicating by how much.
The play was not reviewable - third-base umpire Alex MacKay ruled the ball was fair when it traveled over the bag and anything in front of the base umpires is not eligible for a review. But that doesn't mean Vitello didn't get a report from the Giants' video replay review room. The double put two on for Tim Tawa's homer to left center.
Vitello didn't appear to swear or insult the umpires when disputing the fair call, but once he was ejected, he charged out and made his feelings known to Porter, first appearing to say, "Why? What for?"

BOSTON — Third baseman Nolan Arenado was out of the Arizona Diamondbacks' lineup for a second consecutive day as he deals with a left intercostal injury, but manager Torey Lovullo said the tentative plan was for Arenado to return to action in the series finale on Wednesday, Aug. 19, as the designated hitter.
"He's getting very close," Lovullo said. "We want him to continue to get a little more work with the trainers."
Lovullo said there was a "strong possibility" that Arenado would start on Wednesday.
Arenado left the game on Sunday, Aug. 16, in Atlanta due to the injury and underwent an MRI on Monday, Aug. 17.

Well, this was ugly in every conceivable way. However, the Diamondbacks can perhaps be forgiven for being "off" this evening in Boston, as matters off the field took center stage. Face of the franchise Ketel Marte no-showed at Fenway Park this afternoon, forcing a roster change with just minutes to go before first pitch, as he was placed on the restricted list. Mitch Bratt had a bad start, Zack Littell showed why he got DFA'd, and the offense was barely more present than Marte, as the D-backs lost the opening game of the series against the Red Sox, by a large margin, which accurately reflected the tenor and tone of this one.
The weirdness began with the late announcement of the team's line-up. And when I say late, there was less than ten minutes to go before first pitch, and there was still nothing from the D-backs. Finally, a late, shocking roster move was announced. Ketel Marte had been placed on the restricted list, with Jose Fernandez replacing him. Fortunately, Fernandez was in town anyway, as possible coverage had Nolan Arenado had to go on the injured list. That was avoided – Arenado is officially day-to-day with his trunk issue (I'm going to keep calling it that!) – so he could take Marte's spot on the roster.
But what had happened to Ketel? Everyone was stunned, even John Gambadoro, who usually is very good at having the pulse of the team, called the move "so unexpected." It was known that Marte had flown to Boston with the team – his Instagram feed made that clear, with a report of teammate Corbin Carroll winning NL Player of the Week being the last post. But he wasn't at Fenway for batting practice. The team gave him as long as possible, but eventually had to pull the trigger. Nick Piecoro had as much an explanation as anyone: "I'm told Ketel Marte is doing OK physically, he just didn't show up to the ballpark tonight."
While we all pondered what that might mean – especially given Marte's previous willingness to go AWOL, necessitating a trip to the restricted list – there was still a game going on. Sort of. In the sense that only Boston seemed to turn up. From the first pitch, it seemed that starter Mitch Bratt was not on form, with his pitches a couple of miles per hour down on normal. Considering he has been a command and control guy, rather than a power one, this wasn't good. But the command wasn't there either. He walked two in the first and, though Bratt was able to strand them, a lead-off walk in the second came round to score, plus one more, for a 2-0 Red Sox lead.
After one more inning, and one more run, Bratt was done for the night after 65 pitches. His final line: three innings of work, allowing three earned runs on four hits and three walks. He was basically a shadow of his previous three starts, where he tossed 18 innings and allowed three runs. The team turned to Zack Littell as the long relief mop-up guy, and it's safe to say his second outing wasn't anywhere near as good as his previous one either. To be blunt, we ki

ATLANTA (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Nolan Arenado left their game against the Braves after running out a grounder in the top of the fourth inning Sunday.
Arenado, who hit two home runs in a 10-3 win over Atlanta the previous night, appeared to pull up as he was running to first. The team said he was removed from the game with left trunk discomfort.
Arenado was replaced in the bottom half of the inning by Ildemaro Vargas, who homered in the seventh to tie the game at 2.
Arenado, an eight-time All-Star, is hitting .241 with 20 homers and 62 RBIs this season.

I hope you all will forgive me for spending a portion of my Saturday mornings sorting through various somewhat bleak baseball things in preparation for the coming recap. For instance, today I found myself roaming around looking at the recent game logs for Harrison Grant Holmes and comparing them those of Eduardo Rodriguez (Holmes had a better run recently, at least until today), and then looking at how the Braves as a team hit versus left-handed pitching (10th in the majors, as opposed to 8th vs. right-handers). The Diamondbacks, incidentally, are 2nd in the majors facing lefties, at least in terms of OPS, which was nice to see. But Grant Holmes is not a lefty, so I scrolled down to see how we do against righties, and discovered the rather depressing fact that we rank 29th in the majors in OPS against right-handed pitching. I tend to try to look for something interesting that I could touch on and organize my thinking around, in case a Saturday game goes badly for us, as it feels like they often do.
Anyway. As it turns out, I didn't really need to, though it certainly didn't look like it was going to be that way in the early going. Holmes caught leadoff man Lars Nootbaar looking to start off the game, then got Corbin Carroll to pop out on the infield and Geraldo Perdomo to strike out swinging on three pitches to make short work of the Snakes in the top of the first. Everyone's favorite hologram then came on for the bottom of the frame and gave up hits to the first three batters he faced: a home run to absolutely straightaway center field to Ronald Acuña, Jr., followed by a double to Drake Baldwin and a maddening bloop single just behind shortstop that fell in and advanced Baldwin to third. ERod finally recorded his first out on an Ozzie Albies pop fly to shallow right, but Baldwin crossed the plate on a grounder to second. That wound up being all the damage done, but we were already in a hole and Rodriguez had already thrown 24 pitches. 2-0 Atlanta
Given our dismal 0 for 14 performance last night with runners in scoring position, and given how easily Holmes had disposed of the top of our lineup in the top of the first, it seemed like we were in a very deep hole. But the bottom two thirds of the lineup, perhaps shamed by yesterday's aforementioned dismal performance, were having none of it today. Gabriel Moreno drewa five-pitch walk to lead things off, and was promptly advanced to third by a Max Kepler double into the alley in right center that rolled to the wall. Nolan Arenado grounded out slowly to third, allowing Moreno to score. Then Tim Tawa grounded a single to left, driving in Kepler and tying things back up. But we weren't done! Ildemaro Vargas, starting at second today due to Ketel Marte's gimpy knee, rolled over to second for the second out, but then Ryan Waldschmidt hit an opposite field liner to right that dropped for a single and scored Tawa from second. 3-2 DBACKS

Playing without All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte, the Arizona Diamondbacks didn't miss a beat on offense and steamrolled the Atlanta Braves 10-3 on Saturday, Aug. 15, at Truist Park.
The Diamondbacks (66-58) have won four of their last six games overall, with five straight road wins over Atlanta. They have a chance for a three-game series sweep on Sunday, Aug. 16, with a trip to Boston to play the contending Red Sox up next.
Nolan Arenado hit two home runs, a two-run shot in the third inning and a solo homer in the seventh, and totaled four runs batted in to lead a 13-hit attack for the Diamondbacks, who remain in a National League wild card position.
Ildemaro Vargas lined a three-run home run just over the left field wall in the top of the ninth, and the Diamondbacks dealt the NL East-leading Braves (73-50) their worst home defeat this season.
The Diamondbacks, with Marte dealing with left knee soreness that forced him out of Friday night's game early on and kept him out of Saturday's lineup, got another injury scare when hot-hitting catcher Gabriel Moreno took a foul tip off his protector but near his groin area.

ATLANTA (AP) — Nolan Arenado had two home runs and four RBIs, Eduardo Rodriguez threw six strong innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks routed the Atlanta Braves 10-3 on Saturday night.
Arenado reached 20 home runs for the ninth time in his career. Ildemaro Vargas hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning, while Gabriel Moreno extended his hitting streak to nine games with three hits, scored three times and drove in a run. Corbin Carroll had a double, triple and run scored, and Tim Tawa was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Rodriguez (12-4) surrendered a leadoff home run to Ronald Acuña Jr. and gave up a second run in the first inning, but settled down after that. He went six innings, giving up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks. The Diamondbacks have not walked a batter in the first two games of the series.
Jonathan Loáisiga and Kevin Ginkel pitched scoreless innings, and Phillip Abner gave up a run in the ninth.
The Braves had won the last seven times Grant Holmes started, but he struggled early and did not get out of the fourth inning. Holmes (7-5) gave up six runs on six hits and walked three. He had 13 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings entering the game.

There was no hangover for the Diamondbacks after their low-scoring series victory over the Dodgers. Indeed, the offense nearly matched the entire output there, in just the first four outs. That provided a nice, soft landing for Michael Soroka, in his return from the injured list, as he threw 4.1 scoreless innings, before being removed for pitch count purposes. Zack Littell made his D-backs debut, and was awarded the win for his 4.2 innings of relief. Arizona simply took care of business tonight at Chase Field, and as a result remain tied with the Phillies for the second wild-card spot, since Philadelphia also won, in St. Louis.
Before this season, the Diamondbacks had hit only five first inning grand-slams in team history – that's over a span north of 4,400 opening frames. The last came more than fifteen years ago, in April 2011, when Stephen Drew took Ryan Dempster deep. But the team has now done it twice this year, with Nolan Arenado the man responsible on both occasions. Amusingly, he has a Rockies appeal to thank for it. With two outs, Gabriel Moreno hit a triple that rattled around in the right-field corner. It looked he then scored on a wild pitch, but Colorado appealed, saying it hit Marte. A review confirmed this, so Gabi was sent back and Ketel took first. But instead of getting out of the frame, Lars Nootbaar drew a walk, which allowed Arenado to come up with the bases loaded. Just like on May 18 against Robbie Ray, this then happened.

Arizona put up another crooked number in the second inning. With one out, Ryan Waldschmidt singled, Geraldo Perdomo walked, and Corbin Carroll doubled home Waldschmidt for a 5-0 lead. A wild pitch added another run, and Marte drove in one more with a single. Through two innings, Arizona were 7-0 up, and they had made Colorado starter Gabriel Hughes throw 63 pitches. With Soroka having allowed one walk and no hits through two, it was a bit of a surprise that it was the D-backs starter who was the first to be replaced. Part of this was the Arizona offense taking a bit of a nap for the next few innings. Also, this was Soroka's first outing in the majors since June 19. He had only one rehab start, throwing 57 pitches for the Reno Aces.
Therefore, while it would have been nice to get him through five and qualify for the victory, a fairly long fourth inning (needing 22 pitches) put the dampers on that. After getting the first out in the fifth, Soroka threw an 8-pitch walk, and Torey Lovullo decided that was enough, at a total of 77 pitches. The final line: 4.1 shutout innings, on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Under normal circumstances, this might have been a bit of a problem. But new guy Zack Littell had been signed for exactly this, and had no pitch count limitation. He didn't make a great first impression, walking the first batter he faced on four pitches. Dbacks manager Torey Lovullo started off his postgame interview stating that this game had a 'funky rhythm' to it, and I think that is a great way to summarize it.
Eduardo Rodriguez who went 8 scoreless in his last outing, got jumped in this outing. The Padres came out of the gates with a lot of hard contact scoring 3 runs in the first inning and 2 more in the second inning and before anyone could get settled in, the Dbacks were already chasing 5 runs. ERod certainly didn't have his best stuff tonight, but due to the amount of hard contact he was giving up early in this game, Im sure there are going to be people who are suspecting there was atleast some degree of pitch tipping going on.
The defense behind ERod also let him down multiple times as multiple ****** clanked off of Arenado's mitt at 3rd base, none of them errors, but still not common to see from the perennial gold glove winner. Ketel Marte also missed a critical double play on a bobble that allowed extra runs to score as of the 7 runs scored tonight while ERod was pitching, only 5 of them were earned. Certainly not the crisp defense this team typically relies on to win games. It should be noted however that despite not having his best stuff, ERod was still able to pitch into the 6th inning tonight.
The offense did nothing for 8 of the 9 innings tonight with the exception of the 7th when the Dbacks offense blasted 2 homeruns. Nolan Arenado hit the first, a 2 run shot to get the Dbacks on the board. James McCann hit the second of the inning another 2 run shot, and then all of a sudden its an 8-4 ballgame and the Padres are getting up Mason Miller in the 8th. However the Padres would then tack on another run in the 9th inning to sit Miller back down and solidify the final score of 9-4.
Of particular note in this one, Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll combined to go 0-8 as they continue to slide as they have done the past 6 weeks or so. This team desperately needs them to step up if this team is going to maintain any kind of wild card lead and make a playoff run. Hopefully this is just the calm before the storm.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Geraldo Perdomo and Corbin Carroll homered during a seven-run seventh inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Cleveland Guardians 12-8 on Saturday night for their fourth straight victory.
Perdomo also had the fourth four-hit game of his six-year career and drove in three runs for the Diamondbacks, who hold the second wild-card spot in the National League. The shortstop is 6 for 10 with four RBIs in the first two games of the series.
Brian McCann had three hits while Nolan Arenado also went deep with a solo shot in the eighth inning.
Rhys Hoskins and Chase DeLauter homered for Cleveland, which is 5-10 since the All-Star break. Steven Kwan added three hits as the Guardians (56-56) fell to .500 for the first time since May 10.
Gerardo Carrillo (2-0), the second of six Arizona pitchers, got the win after throwing two scoreless innings.

You guys have probably heard the line 'its hard not to be romantic about baseball' before, and tonight was a perfect encapsulation of that very phrase. It had all the highs of the big blowout win, the heartbreak of the blown save, and then the triumph of the unsung hero coming out of nowhere in the extra innings to save the team. Nights like tonight either drive you crazy, or make you fall in love with the game that much more. No other sport can play with our emotions quite like baseball can.
The Diamondbacks offense got off to such an amazing start. Scoring consistently with team baseball throughout each of the first 4 innings. It really felt like this offense was clicking. Overall they recorded 16 hits in the 12 innings highlighted by James McCann with 4 and Nolan Arenado with 3. On the flip side, this offense also set a franchise record recording 24 outs with runners in scoring position tonight. What started out so good, quickly turned into a start reminder of the problems that have been plaguing this offense most of the season with its struggles with RISP.
Then in the 7th inning, the offense suddenly came to a screeching halt. And the Pirates offense came jolting to life. The Pirates would erase the 6-0 lead the Dbacks had going into the 8th inning with 3 runs in the 8th and 3 runs in the 9th. Unfortunately what had been a strength much of the season in the backend of the bullpen in Thompson and Sewald was a weakness tonight. Thompson simply could not get away with anything tonight giving up 4 hits and a walk in just .2 of an inning. And the leader of this bullpen, Sewald came into the game with a 3 run lead in the 9th and proceeded to give up a base hit and back to back home runs to immediately erase the 3 run lead and tie the game. This was such a low moment for this team in such a big game. Especially with how lock down Sewald has been in save situations this season coming into the game having blown only 2 saves in 24 chances.
However fortunately for the Dbacks there was Gerardo Carillo who tonight put this team on his back and carried them back into the 3rd wildcard spot. Carrillo, who came into today working primarily as the low leverage long man, was thrust straight into some of the most high leverage innings of the season thus far, and boy did he deliver. Carillo was able to give the team 2 innings tonight in which he allowed 0 hits and 0 runs while striking out 3 while getting his first career major league win. He threw a 6 pitch scoreless 11th and then put up another 0 in the 12th to keep this team alive. Carillo has always been an intriguing relief option in the upper minors given his upper 90's fastball velocity combined with his pitch mix including a cutter, a splitter, and sinker. However tonight he also showed that he has what could arguably be the most important trait for a late inning reliever and that is he has that dog in him.
It is also worth discussing Brandon Pfaadt who tonight was dominant over 7 innings and definite

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ildemaro Vargas had two hits, including a go-ahead single in the sixth inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks overcame Shohei Ohtani's 22nd home run in a 5-3 victory over the sloppy Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday that finished a three-game sweep heading into the All-Star break.
Ohtani went 2 for 4 and is batting .293 with 22 homers and 58 RBIs while going 8-2 with a 1.79 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 85 2/3 innings over 14 starts. The four-time MVP is skipping Tuesday's All-Star Game to have his left knee drained to relieve continued irritation.
Nolan Arenado scored a run and had an RBI as the Diamondbacks extended their winning streak to four games in their first road sweep of the Dodgers since Sept. 4-6, 2017.
Ohtani hit his ninth leadoff homer this season, connecting on the first pitch from rookie Mitch Bratt, who started because Zac Gallen went on the injured list with elbow inflammation.
Two-time defending champion Los Angeles heads into the break a major league-best 61-36. Tommy Edman had a two-run, third-inning single that built a 3-0 lead for Los Angeles, which had a passed ball and two more errors and has nine errors over five games.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Nolan Arenado homered and moved closer to 2,000 hits, and Merrill Kelly combined with two relievers on a three-hitter for the Arizona Diamondbacks, who beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 on Thursday night to take three of four.
The Diamondbacks and Padres are jockeying for second place in the NL West, well behind the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Arizona popped back into a tie with San Diego, 14 1/2 games behind the idle Dodgers.
Arenado homered to left field off Yuki Matsui with two outs in the sixth, his 11th of the season and 364th of his 14-year career. He's six shy of becoming the sixth active player to reach 2,000 hits. He's in his first season with Arizona after spending five with St. Louis and his first eight with Colorado.
The Southern California native has 17 homers at Petco Park, the most by a visiting player. He's reached base safely in 25 of his last 26 games at the downtown ballpark since Sept. 1, 2018.
Kelly (7-8) quieted the Padres a night after they won 10-4. He held San Diego to one run and three hits in seven innings, with six strikeouts and three walks. Kevin Ginkel pitched a perfect eighth and Paul Sewald a perfect ninth for his 21st save.

The Diamondbacks jumped on Padres starter Walker Buehler early. They scored six runs in the first three innings, and despite this being a Brandon Pfaadt start, were just able to hold on for victory. The win put Arizona back in sole possession of second place in the NL West, and also brought them back to a .500 record for the fifteenth time this year. That stat is for ChefAZ.
The D-backs took the lead while, I suspect, a sizeable number of fans were watching Team USA's exit from the World Cup at the hands feet of Belgium. Yes, them again. Ketel Marte wasted little time, tripling on a misplayed ball off the wall in center at Petco. Geraldo Perdomo them wore the next pitch to put runners on the corner, and an errant pick off throw by Buehler allowed the D-backs to bypass the whole, tricky "hitting with RISP" thing. Two outs later, Max Kepler did the whole, tricky "hitting with RISP" thing, scoring Perdomo for a 2-0 Diamondbacks edge. But that was just an amuse bouche for the main course, delivered by Buehler in the fourth.

It was the epitome of the "That escalated quickly" meme from every San Diegan's favorite movie, Anchorman. With one out, Corbin Carroll squirted one down the left-field line for a double. Five pitches later, it was 6-0 to Arizona. In short order, Gabriel Moreno singled, Lourdes Gurriel had an RBI knock and Max Kepler cranked his first home-run as a Diamondback, a three-run shot. It was a no-doubter, a 417 foot blast to right. Wasn't the end of the fireworks for Arizona, as Geraldo Perdomo went deep (home-run #6 for him) in the fourth, and Nolan Arenado reached double-digits with his tenth of the year. All three homers are above.
Arenado joins Marte and Carroll in that club. After a rough June (196/.255/.299 for a .554 OPS), it'd be nice to get Nolan back on track. Speaking on "back on track", Brandon Pfaadt delivered his best outing of the season. Indeed, the Game Score of 65 was his second-highest since July 18 last year. The only better was, of course, his incomplete game shutout against the Giants in September. Tonight, he pitched five scoreless, with no walks and six strikeouts. He did allow four hits, and just had a single clean inning. But all of the knocks were singles, and he didn't face a single batter with a runner in scoring position. He could have gone longer, but is still being stretched back out. He threw 66 in his first game back and reached 72 tonight.

The Diamondbacks promoted infielder/outfielder Tim Tawa from Triple-A Reno on Sunday, July 5, clearing ****** e by optioning infielder LuJames Groover.
Tawa has been back and forth a couple of times between the majors and Reno this season and has mashed during his time in the minors. In 88 plate appearances with Reno, he owns a .320/.409/.733 line with six doubles, two triples and seven home runs.
Manager Torey Lovullo gave Tawa the start on July 5 at third base but said he could factor into any number of positions going forward, including first base, at which the Diamondbacks have been desperate for production.
Lovullo, in recent days, has expressed a willingness to play the hot hand — or the "king of the court," as he has put it — and as such, he has Ildemaro Vargas in the lineup for the third consecutive game. Vargas has gone 4 for 8 with a double and two RBIs over the past two days.
Lovullo is giving Pavin Smith the start at first base. Tawa is at third because Lovullo wanted veteran Nolan Arenado to get a day off to "recharge" ahead of the upcoming seven-game road trip. Ketel Marte is serving as the designated hitter.

As the legendary football coach Bear Bryant once said, "Defense wins championships," and without it, the Milwaukee Brewers don't take game one against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Crew takes care of business in an 11-inning affair by a score of 7-4.
Often known for his defensive abilities, Garrett Mitchell used his bat to sneak one over the center field wall to give the Brewers an early 2-0 lead. An inning later, Jake Bauers added another run to their tally with a base hit to right field to make it 3-0. It was nearly 4-0 before Lourdes Gurriel Jr. took away another home run from Mitchell, holding the game at bay.
Later in the bottom half of the third, the Diamondbacks found themselves with bases loaded, two outs, and down to their final strike of the inning; with a chance to cut into the Brewers' lead, Nolan Arenado ripped a double into left field to clear the bases, tying the game at 3-3, putting an end to Kyle Harrison's night as well.
The Brewers' starting rotation has seen a slight decrease in productivity, specifically from their top two arms over their last couple of outings. Tonight, it was Harrison who struggled, not making it out of the third inning. He completed his evening with 2.2 innings pitched, striking out three, while allowing three runs to score on five hits and a walk. His main issue outside of the runs scoring was his pitch count, as he threw 72 pitches on the night.
Brewers quickly responded on offense by forcing the Diamondbacks to pull their starting pitcher after 3.1 innings. In Jose Cabrera's third career start, he allowed three runs, three walks, and six hits while striking out three batters. It's his second start in a row allowing multiple runs to score and his first time not making it into the fifth inning.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Nolan Arenado and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had run-scoring hits and Arizona's eventual winning run scored on a passed ball — all in the ninth inning — as the Diamondbacks beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 Tuesday night.
All the runs in the game were scored in the ninth inning.
The Diamondbacks managed just three hits in the first eight innings. In the ninth, Gabriel Moreno singled and Pavin Smith walked before Arenado hit an RBI double to left-center field. Gurriel followed with a two-run single to center for a 3-0 lead before Jorge Barrosa scored on a passed ball by Cardinals catcher Jimmy Crooks.
Arizona starter pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez allowed just three hits through 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked three. Kevin Ginkel (3-2) pitched the eighth, striking out one and earned the win. Brandyn Garcia earned his first save of the season.
The Cardinals mounted a comeback in the bottom half of the ninth.

Cardinals fans give Nolan Arenado emotional standing ovation in first return to Busch Stadium originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Nolan Arenado spent five seasons wearing a Cardinals uniform. On Monday night, he walked back into Busch Stadium wearing different colors for the first time. The response from St. Louis fans said everything.
Before the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cardinals opened their series, Arenado was introduced as a visiting player at Busch Stadium for the first time since being traded to Arizona during the offseason. Rather than hearing boos or a mixed reaction, the veteran third baseman was welcomed back with a lengthy standing ovation from Cardinals fans who spent years cheering for one of the franchise's most accomplished stars.
After Arizona stranded a runner in the first, and the Cardinals stranded the bases loaded in the bottom half of the first, Nolan led off the top of the second in St. Louis.
It was a moment that felt inevitable. No matter how his tenure ended, Arenado's place in Cardinals history was already secure.

ST. LOUIS — The latest round of All-Star voting results rolled in Monday, June 22, and revealed Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll ranked just 10th among National League outfielders.
This does not feel right to teammate Nolan Arenado.
"The fact that he's not getting enough votes, I think it just shows how people don't really know how good he is or are not paying attention," Arenado said.
Carroll's season is worthy of All-Star consideration. He owns a .281/370/.574 line with 16 doubles, nine triples and 13 homers.
The problem is, his numbers might not be seen as being significantly better than everyone else in what is a crowded NL outfield competition.

The sweep at the hands of the Marlins was demoralizing, but the Nats need to bounce back. They got a day off to re-set, and now they start the first west coast trip of the series. The Nats will square off against a Diamondbacks team that sneakily is in second place in the NL West.
I have a feeling this lineup from Blake Butera will not be very popular. Curtis Mead, Jacob Young and Keibert Ruiz are all on the bench. That means Jorbit Vivas will be at third, Dylan Crews will be in center and Drew Millas will be behind the plate. Jose Tena will also be hitting third and in the DH spot. Foster Griffin will be on the mound.
The Diamondbacks have an extreme mix of youth and experience. Veterans like Corbin Carroll, Nolan Arenado, Geraldo Perdomo and Ketel Marte are in the lineup. However, there are also rookies like Ryan Waldschmidt and the debuting LuJames Groover in the lineup. We will not see old pal Ildemaro Vargas tonight after he collided with Max Muncy yesterday. Veteran Merrill Kelly will be on the hill for the Snakes.
