Former Indiana State Sycamore Johnathan Edwards was waived Monday by the Indianapolis Colts.
The move followed the Colts' 41-23 loss at home to Baltimore in Sunday's season opener. Edwards didn't play against the Ravens, and was among six Colts players declared inactive for Week 1. Indianapolis promoted Kenneth Harris from the practice squad prior to the game, with Harris then occupying Edwards' special teams roles.
The 6-foot-1, 201-pound Edwards was originally signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent May 9, 2025.
As a rookie, Edwards played in 14 games (with five starts) and registered 24 tackles (18 solo), three passes defensed and two special teams stops.
Collegiately, Edwards appeared in 45 career games at Tulane (2024) and Indiana State (2021-23) and recorded 124 tackles (86 solo), 1.5 tackles for loss, 22 passes defensed and one forced fumble.

SAN MARCOS - Texas State football coach GJ Kinne said Saturday's 31-26 loss to UTSA was one of the weirdest games he's ever experienced.
The Bobcats (0-2) outgained the Roadrunners (2-0) offense by 83 yards. The Texas State running backs averaged 7.15 yards per carry on 35 attempts. UTSA was 3-of-15 on third down; Texas State was 9-of-17. UTSA quarterback Owen McCown faced pressure from Texas State's defensive line all afternoon.

And yet, the Bobcats were the team desperately tossing laterals across the field when the clock hit zero, hoping for a miracle play. UTSA stormed the field afterward, whooping and hollering in celebration. For the first time in the rivalry, Texas State was the program defending its status. UTSA clearly had a chip on its shoulder that its San Marcos neighbours used to have. After the game, Kinne treated the loss like any other.
"We can't let this one define us," Kinne said. "It's not the end-all, be-all."

If Mercyhurst plans on upsetting the Lobos, it'll have to do so without a key starter.
Lakers starting quarterback Alex Gevaudan will not be available for Saturday's game against New Mexico, head coach Thomas Sydeski said Wednesday.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound junior completed 31 of 52 passes for 359 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in losses to Youngstown State (43-10) and New Mexico State (51-14) this season. He was key in a competitive first half last week against the Aggies, passing for 147 yards before leaving with an undisclosed injury in the second quarter.
Without Gevaudan, Mercyhurst will play both junior Anthony Wolter and sophomore Tyler Tusai against UNM. Both saw time in the Lakers' loss to NMSU, Mercyhurst's first game against an FBS opponent in program history.
Neither Wolter or Tusai have started a collegiate game entering Saturday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sean McVay has never been afraid to buck conventional NFL logic, and he is doing so once again with the Los Angeles Rams' unusual travel plans for their season opener in Australia.
The Rams are leaving Southern California on Tuesday night and will arrive in Australia on Thursday, roughly 24 hours before their game against the San Francisco 49ers kicks off at 10:35 a.m. local time on Friday morning at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The Niners will spend one week in Melbourne, having arrived last Friday for what is expected to be the first of several NFL regular-season games in a country and venue traditionally ******* ociated with cricket and Australian rules football.
"It doesn't mean that we think we're right and a different approach is wrong," McVay said Sunday. "It's just what we think is best based on the things that we've done and what we've learned over our time here."
McVay said the plan was influenced in part by how the Rams approached their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London last October, when they arrived on Saturday morning for a Sunday afternoon start. They rolled to a comfortable 35-7 win at Wembley Stadium.

College football's newest eligibility fight gave Steve Sarkisian a chance to draw a moral line on Monday. Fans immediately started checking the Texas roster.
The Longhorns coach criticized cutting a college player who spent the offseason with the program simply to make room for someone coming directly from an NFL roster. However, the return of veteran Texas offensive lineman Cole Hutson made that position an instant target.
"The fact that somebody out there is going to take a player off of an NFL roster and tell somebody who's been doing it for nine months to go kick rocks, that doesn't sit well with me," Sarkisian said on Monday. "I think that's wrong. That, morally, is wrong."
One fan quickly pointed toward Hutson.
"He literally did the exact same thing," the user wrote in anX response.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered their preseason finale with several roster spots and position battles still to sort out. Their 19-0 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars may have provided some answers, although not necessarily the ones Tampa Bay wanted. The Buccaneers finished with only 120 total yards, went 2 of 12 on third down and failed to score. Still, there were a few positives buried inside an otherwise difficult night.
If anyone helped themselves Friday night, it was Jack Pyburn. The rookie edge rusher finished with two sacks and three tackles for loss, consistently finding his way into Jacksonville's backfield. Tampa Bay's defensive front produced most of the team's bright spots, finishing with four sacks as Anthony Nelson and Josiah Green also got to the quarterback. Pyburn's performance was especially important as final roster decisions approach. Tampa Bay has spent the offseason rebuilding its front seven, and his ability to provide energy and production off the edge gives the coaching staff something to consider as they build the final 53. Pyburn has certainly played himself into a position where the coaching staff has to find him a spot.
Jalon Daniels had arguably his biggest opportunity of the preseason after being given the start, but he wasn't able to capitalize on it. Daniels completed 8 of 15 passes for 57 yards while taking three sacks and losing a botched snap, a glaring issue over the preseason. After helping lead comeback victories in Tampa Bay's first two preseason games, Daniels struggled to generate anything consistently against Jacksonville. He wasn't helped by his receivers, either. Dean Patterson IV and Kameron Johnson dropped third-down passes early, while Garrett Greene also failed to secure a catchable ball. Daniels' previous performances showed why Tampa Bay has been intrigued by the undrafted rookie, but Friday reminded everyone he remains a developmental quarterback. If there was a legitimate opportunity to overtake Jake Browning for the backup job behind Baker Mayfield, the finale did not do anything to solidify his case.
There isn't much positive to say about an offense that finishes with 87 yards and zero points. Tampa Bay punted on six of its first seven possessions and struggled to protect its quarterbacks, sustain drives or establish the running game. The Buccaneers didn't record a single first down in the second half as Jacksonville's defensive front controlled the line of scrimmage. The offensive line remained a major issue, and receivers failed to come down with the ball. Then came the special teams breakdown that put an exclamation point on the night. Michael Wortham returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, extending Jacksonville's lead to 19-0 and turning an already frustrating night into a nightmare final score.

The previous Rainbow Wahine volleyball coaching staff knew exactly what they had with incoming freshman hitter Cha'lei Reid.
A terminator of the volleyball on either side, the Kahuku High alumna gave Hawaii an immediate offensive threat who could compete against anybody right out of the gate.
The rest of her game would eventually come around, but for at least the beginning of her college career, the plan was to keep things simple, be patient, and let Reid slowly get used to the rigors of Division I volleyball.
Ten matches into the season, that patience went right out the door. The team lost its two most experienced hitters — Tali Hakas and Stella Adeyemi — to injury, leaving Reid to carry most of the offensive load.
She never once complained in the public eye. Entering Year 2, where she will likely have much more help on the outside, the experience has only made her stronger.

Florida's tight end room looks completely different heading into the 2026 season.
Amir Jackson and Micah Jones are the only returning players at the position, while the Gators added six newcomers through the transfer portal, recruiting class and walk-on ranks. That gives offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner and tight ends coach Evan McKissack a much deeper group to work with in an offense that should feature plenty of 12 personnel.
Jackson and Luke Harpring (Georgia Tech) provide two spread options who can stretch the field, while Lacota Dippre (James Madison) offers a more physical, all-around option. Evan Chieca is another hybrid option, but he remains unproven at the FBS level.
Freshman Heze Kent might be the most interesting player in the position room due to his massive frame and weight-loss journey. Jon Sumrall challenged him to get into shape if Kent wanted to stay at tight end, and things are going well so far.

Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Nearly 25% of all ex-NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, according to a study published Tuesday.
The study was published in the British Medical Journal by researchers from Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston University and other institutions.
Researchers worked to determine the range of possible prevalence of the degenerative brain disease at death among former NFL players and examine the link between CTE severity and risk of dementia.
More than 90% of the samples with stage IV CTE, the most advanced form of the disease, also were diagnosed with dementia.
"The NFL continuously strives to make the game of football safer, including by implementing strategies to reduce concussions and head impacts," the league said in a statement.

Newcastle United are preparing for one of the biggest training ground projects in English football after agreeing to buy the 260-acre Woolsington Hall estate for a proposed new £190 million performance complex.
According to The Sun, the Magpies want the site, which is close to Newcastle International Airport and around five miles north-west of the city centre, to become the new home of their men's first team and academy.
Subject to planning approval, the Magpies hope to complete the move in time for the 2029/30 season, with a formal application expected to be submitted to Newcastle City Council early next year.
The project will transform the historic estate while keeping its character.
Woolsington Hall includes a listed country house and large areas of parkland, with Newcastle planning to restore and improve the existing buildings and surroundings as part of the development.

The Cincinnati Bengals don't typically do much wheeling and dealing, but we have seen them be a bit more aggressive in that regard in the Zac Taylor era.
We could see them pull something similar off as they reportedly have asked about Green Bay Packers corner Carrington Valentine, according to Easton Butler.
The Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins have also reportedly called about Valentine's availability.
The 6-foot, 189-pound Valentine would instantly improve the depth at the boundary corner position. DJ Turner and Dax Hill are locked in as starters, but Hill himself is already dealing with a hamstring issue. The only names behind them are DJ Ivey and rookie Tacario Davis, neither of whom is very experienced in getting NFL snaps on defense.
As for what the Bengals could offer, it could simply resemble a trade that helped fuel their last Super Bowl run. They traded center Billy Price for the New York Giants defensive tackle B.J. Hill. You simply need to look where the Bengals are deepest, and it is wide receiver and defensive tackle.

Travis Kelce is entering his later NFL years with the Kansas City Chiefs. So, with that in mind, it shouldn't at all be surprising that his NFL ranking isn't what it used to.
But, make no mistake, my friend. Kelce is still performing very well. Last season, even with the Chiefs not making the playoffs, Kelce played in all 17 games. He recorded 76 receptions for 851 receiving yards and five touchdowns. He also averaged 11.2 yards per catch.
The NFL is slowly rolling out its NFL Top 100 list, which is one of the most anticipated best-of players lists of the year. In it, they have Kelce at No. 79. That's down from No. 42 last season. It's worth noting that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is down, too, coming in at No. 18.
At least the description of Kelce on the list was positive, though, and pointed out that he's still elite.

The Phillies were forced to make a decision at the beginning of the season, and the organization ultimately fired former manager Rob Thomson.
"There's a major shakeup in Philadelphia. The Phillies fired manager Rob Thomson on Tuesday morning. Don Mattingly is the interim skipper, with the team's press release saying he'll hold that position for the remainder of the 2026 season," MLB Trade Rumors' Anthony Franco wrote.
Philadelphia will have another decision to make heading into next season: whether to keep Mattingly in the role or find a new manager. However, the Phillies are currently barely in the Wild Card picture, and USA Today's Bob Nightengale does not believe Mattingly will be back next season. Instead, he believes Philadelphia will hire Alex Cora.

A lot of bad things can happen on the road. In terms of baseball and the Seattle Mariners, they could have lost a road series today, in Houston, to the division rival and leader Astros.
The Seattle Mariners did not do that, and instead they won the game and the series with a score of 3-2, behind strong outings from both Bryan Woo and Andrés Muñoz especially, and with the offense holding just strong enough against Houston's ace Hunter Brown.
A lot of bad things can happen on the road, and they can happen very suddenly. And the 2026 Seattle Mariners, and by extension their fans and others who choose or are otherwise obligated to watch them play, have seen many bad things happen. Last season's success has given in to a plethora of woes including key additions becoming subtraction by injury, and other unexpected negative maths involving declines and struggles both expected and otherwise. On the outside looking in of even a Wild Card spot and heading into the twilight of the season with few routes for optimism, a lot of this season and trying to root for the Mariners has been a bit like watching your car go up in flames on the side of the road. All plans of where Seattle hoped to go and how they planned to get there going up in smoke.
Of course a lot of my feelings are coming from personal bias, as just last week, I watched my only vehicle do just that: go up in flames on the side of the freeway. More than just my car, it was also a symbolic foot forward from life changes in the off-season that saw the bottom drop out from me entirely in unexpected ways, the fallout of which has taken a long time to recover from and in such a way that has limited my investment in this year's team. Lucky perhaps overall purely in terms of fandom, but no misfortune could keep me away from watching the M's entirely, and I have tracked their trajectory and the commiseration of their flock tentatively. In an odd way, I have actually found catharsis with the kinship of directionless I feel with the team this season.
No moment felt more like an inferno-induced end to Seattle's season ride than the dramatic loss they had in game one on Friday night, where a rare strong offensive output still gave way to a heartbreaking walk-off bomb. Out of first place, out of a wild card, out of steam. The season is over, right? Well, in what our own Ryan Blake dubbed the "first game of the offseason" yesterday, the Mariners did a very Mariners thing to do and defied expectations, by, you know, winning. Decisively.

Once news broke that Josh Kushner and Bob Iger had agreed to purchase a majority share of the Los Angeles Lakers from Mark Walter this week, questions arose about how they would run the franchise. Part of that speculation has to do with any immediate or quick changes that could be made.
Ramona Shelburne of ESPN said that Chris Paul is a name to watch as far as someone who could be brought into the organization. Paul recently retired, ending a legendary 21-season career in the NBA as one of the league's better point guards of all time, and he has had a close friendship with Iger that goes back a number of years.
In an article for the California Post, Khobi Price shed some light on what type of role Paul could hold with the Lakers if he were to be hired by Kushner and Iger. While it is unknown how much interest Paul has in joining the organization, one person who works in the front office of an NBA team said that the future Hall of Famer could be a consultant.
"A front office member on an Eastern Conference team told the Post they could see Paul, at least initially, best fitting in as a consultant as someone who people around the organization can pick the brain of the 12-time All-Star," Price wrote.
"'Just comes down to commitment and how much he listens,' the front office member told the Post of Paul's fit as an executive. 'Understanding [the] game at such a higher level goes such a long way.'"

Báez was a third-round pick of the Cardinals in 2021, out of Dexter School in Brookline, Mass. He was midway through his second full pro season, at Class A Palm Beach, when his father, Jose Manuel, who'd had a profound impact on his baseball development, passed away.
Báez continued climbing the Cardinals' system and the prospect charts, rising to No. 56 in Baseball America's top 100 ratings this summer. And then came June 16, and the third anniversary of his father's death.
