Newcastle United host Liverpool at St James' Park on Sunday evening in Matthias Jaissle's first competitive match in charge, at the end of a summer defined by significant upheaval on Tyneside.
Jaissle arrives from Al Ahli in the Saudi Pro League to replace Eddie Howe, who left the club after the start of pre-season. He inherits a squad that has sold Bruno Guimarães, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon for a combined fee in excess of £240m, alongside the earlier departure of Kieran Trippier to Wolves.
Joelinton is the most notable absentee. Jaissle confirmed the midfielder is out with a groin injury but should return within a couple of weeks. Tino Livramento remains sidelined with a calf problem that forced him to withdraw from England's World Cup squad, and Fabian Schär is also being monitored for fitness. Lewis Miley made his first appearance since breaking his leg in last weekend's 2–1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, but whether he is ready to start remains uncertain.
Sean Steur is expected to be handed his full debut in central midfield, though fellow new signing Aladji Bamba offers a genuine alternative in the same role. Amar Dedic, Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman continue to bed in alongside captain Lewis Hall at the back. Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes provide the width, with Yoane Wissa operating just behind William Osula, who leads the line. Lukas Hornicek continues in goal, having established himself as the club's first-choice option this summer.
Newcastle United possible starting XI (4-2-3-1): Hornicek; Dedic, Thiaw, Botman, Hall; Ramsey, Steur; Elanga, Wissa, Barnes; Osula

Newcastle United are keen on bringing New York Red Bulls forward Julian Hall to the St James' Park club, according to Ben Jacobs. Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle wants the Magpies to make more quality signings, and the 18-year-old has emerged as a target. However, the Toons will face competition from the likes of RB Leipzig, Atletico Madrid and Hull City for the services of the teenage sensation. Hall has nine goals and four ****** ists in his last 19 starts for the Major League Soccer club and Newcastle admire his huge potential.
The Newcastle target made history after becoming the second-youngest player to make his MLS debut aged 15 years and 190 days in June 2024. Hall became the youngest player to score an MLS hat-trick in May and plenty of European clubs are hoping to lure him away from North America. A move to the Premier League could appeal to the American, who was named in the MLS All-Star last month, and the Magpies will hope to pip fierce competition to his services.
The Toons have lost key players this summer and are desperate to make quality additions before the summer transfer deadline.
They have spent £174 million so far this summer on the signings of Bazoumana Toure, Aladji Bamba, Amar Dedic, Lukas Hornicek, Sean Steur and Ewen Jaouen.
The fans still want more, with Guinea international midfielder Ousmane Diabate closing in on a move from Genclerbirligi.

Newcastle are in talks with Manchester City over Nico Gonzalez, according to The Athletic.
The Magpies are looking to reinforce their midfield following the sales of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes to Tottenham Hotspur and ******* nal respectively.
They have already signed midfielders Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba but want to make further additions in the middle of the park.
Newcastle are now understood to have held initial discussions on signing Gonzalez.
Gonzalez joined Man City in January 2025, with the Cityzens short of midfielders due to injuries, most notably Rodri, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

After a sweep against the Minnesota Twins where they scored a combined 23 runs over three games, they pull out a solid win as the Marlins try to cling to the wildcard race.
It was all of the makings of a good team win. It started on the first ball in play of the night, Trea Turner made a classic Derek Jeter-like jump throw to nail Esteury Ruiz. Cristopher Sánchez did not have his normal velocity tonight but it didn't matter too much. He still got six strikeouts and made plenty of Marlins hitters look silly on the changeup but there were breaks. The Marlins offense recorded eight hits, including three straight innings with at least one leadoff baserunner.
It was not always pretty but he gutted it out. Sánchez did catch a nice break in the fifth. After back-to-back singles to start the inning, Heriberto Hernández squibbled a a grounder right to Bryson Stott on the third base bag, who fired a rocket to second base for a double play. Xavier Edwards then hit a weak ground ball to Alec Bohm to end the threat.
Meanwhile, the Phillies' offense hit Janson Junk around for five innings but struggled to deliver the final blow. They were able to capitalize in the bottom of the third, with an excuse-me groundball that dribbled down the third base line for a Justin Crawford leadoff double. After a Kyle Schwarber strikeout, Trea Turner slapped a single to put the Phillies on the board.
After a Bryce Harper walk, Luis Arraez then punched a single into right field to double the Phillies lead to two.

Following Newcastle United losing to Strasbourg on penalties, I played up to the Geordie stereotype by comfort eating a Greggs (Chicken Bake in case you were wondering) and reflected on the previous two hours I'd spent seeing the start of the NUFC Matthias Jaissle Era for myself.
Many questions swirled around my head such as 'Is Dan Burn the right man to captain the club?' and…
'How long will we be able to hold on to Sean Steur for?'
But the one that hit me hardest was 'Is this the worst Premier League pre-season the club has had in recent memory?'
Now before you all grab your pitchforks and torches ready to hang draw and quarter me for yet ANOTHER doomsayer post about Newcastle United before a ball has even kicked, I want to preface this by saying that the 2025/26 season wasn't a truly awful season. Yes there were terrible moments like the poor league finish, the whimpering exit in the Champions League and the crème de la crème of Geordie humiliation in the double derby loss – but objectively, there were also a few positives such as yet another fantastic league cup run with our third semi-final appearance in four seasons.

MIAMI (AP) — Eury Pérez allowed three hits over seven innings, Esteury Ruiz homered and the Miami Marlins beat Paul Skenes and the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-0 on Tuesday night.
Pérez (6-9) struck out three straight Pirates to start the game and surrendered only three singles — two in the third and one in his final inning. The right-hander fanned seven and walked two, throwing 100 pitches. He hasn't surrendered a homer in seven straight starts.
Michael Petersen struck out two in the eighth and Pete Fairbanks retired the side in order in the ninth for his 18th save in 21 opportunities.
Skenes (9-11) left after five innings and 65 pitches. He allowed two runs — one earned — on five hits. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner struck out four and walked one after entering with a 3-3 record and a 6.26 ERA in his previous eight starts.
Ruiz hit his sixth home run, a one-out solo shot in the third to put Miami ahead.

Newcastle's new head coach Matthias Jaissle has underlined the club's ambition despite a string of high-profile exits including manager Eddie Howe, but warned success would not come overnight.
Howe left St James' Park at the end of July after nearly five years in charge, with a clutch of senior players -- captain Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon -- all departing during the summer transfer window.
Saudi-backed Newcastle have signed a group of young players including Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba, but the departures have left the squad short of experience.
Nevertheless, former RB Salzburg and Al-Ahli boss Jaissle remains upbeat.
"We are ambitious. That's the most important thing -- also why I decided to come here. But this will not happen overnight," he said at his first press conference at St James' Park on Tuesday.

Newcastle United's midfield has undergone a dramatic transformation this summer, with Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali both leaving and two young replacements arriving in Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba.
Now, the Daily Mail's Craig Hope and Simon Jones are confirming earlier reports linking Newcastle to Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha, who is now on the Magpies' shortlist as the club searches for an experienced midfielder to complement its younger options and lead Matthias Jaissle's team on the pitch.
"Newcastle have identified Joao Palhinha as an option in their search for an experienced midfielder to fill the void left by Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali," Hope and Jones reported.
The 31-year-old spent last season on loan at Tottenham, and Bayern sporting director Max Eberl admitted at the end of July (h/t iMiaSanMia) that Palhinha is no longer part of the German club's plans and is bound to exit the club this summer, opening the door for another Premier League move. According to GOAL, Bayern could demand €25 million for their player.
Shortly after those comments, ESPN's Bruno Andrade identified Palhinha as one of two midfielders tracked by Newcastle.

A rebuild was always on the cards on Tyneside this summer, not least in the goalkeeping department.
Leaky Newcastle kept just eight clean sheets in the Premier League last season and conceded 55 goals, 15th overall with only relegated Burnley, West Ham and Wolves plus Leeds and Tottenham below them.
Newcastle's outfield players clearly did not offer enough protection, but goalkeeper Nick Pope made a handful of significant errors leading to goals while Aaron Ramsdale never fully convinced during his loan spell and has since returned to Southampton.
A new number one was therefore a priority and Newcastle have once again looked to the continent.
The club have mainly targeted players aged 20 and under from abroad, having already recruited Jaouen, Sean Steur, Bazoumana Toure and Aladji Bamba, so Lukas Lukas Hornicek will feel like something of an elder statesman in comparison.

Newcastle United's move for Aladji Bamba underlines a marked shift in transfer strategy for the Magpies.
It is certainly hard to imagine the club spending £55m on a 29-year-old again like they did when they signed forward Yoane Wissa from Brentford last summer.
Instead, Newcastle have targeted players aged 20 and under on the continent this time around.
Bamba, like Sean Steur, Ewen Jaouen and Bazoumana Toure, will need time to adapt to the physicality and intensity of the Premier League - and it is worth stressing the 20-year-old Frenchman has made only 12 competitive starts for Monaco.
But Newcastle have to take calculated risks this summer before such talents become potentially out of reach.

Newcastle United have agreed a deal worth up to £34m for Monaco midfielder Aladji Bamba.
The 20-year-old Frenchman, who played his first senior game in August 2025, is due on Tyneside on Thursday to have a medical and sign a long-term contract.
Newcastle sold Sandro Tonali to Tottenham last month and have been in the market for a second young midfielder after signing 18-year-old Sean Steur from Ajax.
Another target, Freiburg's Johan Manzambi, opted to join Aston Villa last week.
Among Ligue 1 midfielders who played at least 500 minutes last season, Bamba ranked in the top five for duels won (9.1 per game on average), tackles (3.6), successful take-ons (1.6) and aerial duels won (1.9).

New Newcastle signing Sean Steur says it is an "incredible feeling" to sign for a "giant club" after his £23m move from Ajax was confirmed.
Midfielder Steur, 18, has become the third player aged 20 and under the Magpies have bought in so far this summer after Bazoumana Toure and Ewen Jaouen.
He has signed a five-year contract until 2031.
"It was always my dream to play in the best league in the world, so this is really exciting," Steur told club media.
"I was at home at Ajax – I joined when I was seven and I leave with only good memories - but when a club like Newcastle comes for you, it's really hard to say no. The last few days have gone fast and I'm very happy to join."

Newcastle United have reached an agreement in principle with Ajax to sign 18-year-old midfield prodigy Sean Steur. The Magpies are reportedly set to pay a package worth up to €27 million, including add-ons, to secure the highly rated Dutch youth international. Steur is expected to travel to Tyneside soon to undergo a medical and finalise a five-year contract with the Premier League club, becoming their latest major under-21 acquisition of the summer after Ewen Jaouen and Bazoumana Toure. Eddie Howe is at St James' Park.
The deal represents a significant statement of intent by Newcastle's recruitment team, who have increasingly prioritised high-potential European talent to build a sustainable future. Born in January 2008, Steur has been a standout in Ajax's famed youth system since joining in 2016. The central midfielder quickly progressed into the senior team, making his Eredivisie debut at just 17.
Steur's development accelerated in the 2025–26 campaign, when he became a regular in the first-team squad under significant pressure. He made 38 senior appearances for the Amsterdam giants, recording three goals and five ****** ists. He also memorably scored his first league goal in a high-stakes De Klassieker against Feyenoord, earning widespread praise for his composure.
Ajax had previously extended Steur's contract through 2028, putting themselves in a strong negotiating position, but Newcastle's financial package proved too attractive to refuse.
For Newcastle, the investment aligns with the long-term blueprint established under their ambitious ownership. Following the high-profile departure of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur, manager Eddie Howe has been keen to rebuild his midfield with versatile, energetic options.
