WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has agreed to a significant portion of a stringent ethics proposal that is part of broader cryptocurrency legislation headed for a key vote this week, according to three of the bill's main Republican authors.
The sweeping bill initially had just a provision included that would bar all federally elected officials and their spouses, as well as federal judges, from issuing digital ***** ets.
A core group of Democrats, as well as Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., said that didn't go far enough to address conflict-of-interest issues they had with Trump's crypto wealth. Their votes would be needed to advance the bill in a key vote this Tuesday.
Tillis and Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., along with several other Democrats, had demanded language that would allow state attorneys general to step in and enforce the law in addition to the Justice Department.
In announcing Trump's agreement, Republican Sens. Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, Tim Scott of South Carolina and John Boozman of Arkansas said it includes a "meaningful role" for state attorneys general to play in enforcing the crypto measure should it become law.

Dave Ramsey told caller Hazel her secret teen payments aren't a money problem but a marriage problem requiring full financial transparency and counseling.
Secret spending makes joint wealth-building impossible. Hiding $400 monthly from a spouse means losing its compounding potential in a Roth IRA or 529.
Transparency alone flips the outcome: a joint kid-support budget lets both spouses plan together, while secret contributions force decisions based on false information.

On the September 9 episode of The Ramsey Show, a caller named Hazel admitted she has been slipping money to her three teenagers from a prior marriage, quietly, from her own account, because her husband of almost seven years refuses to help pay for their sports and school costs. Dave Ramsey did not reach for a spreadsheet. He told her: "You don't have a combining money problem and you don't have a who pays for what problem. You have a marriage problem."

Last night in New York City, the Kering Foundation held its fifth annual Caring for Women dinner in the midst of New York Fashion Week. This year, one of the most memorable ensembles of the night came courtesy of Pamela Anderson. Days after making a statement in a bright orange dress at the amfAR Gala Venezia, the queen of makeup-free red-carpet appearances turned heads again in an elegant all-black look that exuded classic Hollywood bombshell glamour.

A $400,000 inherited IRA can become much more expensive if you get the withdrawal timing wrong. Many non-spouse beneficiaries must empty the account within 10 years, and some also have annual RMDs. Delaying distributions could concentrate more taxable income into later years and potentially push more of your money into higher tax brackets.
For many non-spouse beneficiaries, an inherited IRA must be emptied by December 31 of the year containing the 10th1 anniversary of the original owner's death. Certain beneficiaries qualify for different rules.
The 10-year deadline may not be the only requirement. If the original owner died on or after their required beginning date, a non-spouse beneficiary subject to the 10-year rule generally must also take annual RMDs during the 10-year period.
Missing a required distribution can trigger an excise tax of up to 25% of the amount not withdrawn. This makes it important to know whether annual withdrawals apply instead of ****** uming you can leave the entire account untouched until year 10.
Traditional inherited IRA distributions are generally taxed as ordinary income. Leaving a large amount until the final years could force you to withdraw more at once, potentially pushing more of the $400,000 into higher tax brackets.

Actress Aubrey Plaza offloaded the Los Angeles property her late spouse Jeff Baena died in by suicide for $4.4 million—nearly one year after she put it on the market for $6.5 million.
Plaza, 42, who is recently gave birth to her first child with partner Christopher Abbott, originally purchased the home for $4.7 million in October 2022, when it became a marital home for the onscreen star and Baena.
However, in January 2025, Baena tragically died by suicide inside the property, and eight months later, Plaza chose to put it on the market, with an asking price of $6.5 million. That ask was lowered to $5.75 million just a few months later.
Still, the actress struggled to find a buyer—with sources telling Realtor.com® at the time that, while the four-bedroom abode had come under offer several times, the deals always fell through before they could officially close.
By May of this year, the property had been removed from the market altogether, before being relisted a few days later, with a new agent—Carl Gambino of The Gambino Group at Compass—and a much lower asking price: $5.3 million.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Embarrassing. An embarrassment. And more embarrassing beyond that.
The Kyle Whittingham era was supposed to embody toughness, discipline, playing smart, and doing things the right way. After saying all of the right things and appearing to be confident in what Michigan football would bring to the table in his debut in Ann Arbor, Whittingham's team was not only the opposite of everything he espouses, it was a debacle in every way. The Wolverines were a miracle away from, at best, the second-worst loss in program history, and given what the head coach's teams had been for two-plus decades in Salt Lake City, it's a head-scratcher.
The opening offensive drive was as impressive as the rest of the game was bad. Despite mistakes, quarterback Bryce Underwood sliced through the Western Michigan defense like a hot knife through ***** er, making what ended up being fall camp bluster look prescient. But that was it. 75 yards on the opening drive, and a 47-yard Hail Mary aside, it accounted for all but 154 yards accumulated all game. The offense, against a supposedly overmatched foe, made the Sherrone Moore-era offense look like the air raid by comparison. The defense got off the field, surrendering little in terms of points, sure, but it also allowed the Broncos to hold the ball for over 40 minutes, including a 13-minute, 40-second drive spanning from the third to fourth quarters. When the offense got the ball back, it quickly relinquished possession after three plays, managing seven yards on first down before deciding that moving the ball forward was anathema to its goals.
And then there were the other mistakes: missed ***** ignments, an ***** ortment of penalties, and all-around bad play. It wasn't just the opposite of what was expected; it was the opposite of how Whittingham's teams in Utah played for 21 years.
"I'm going to reserve judgment on that until I dissect the film," Whittingham said after the game. "But we talked about how we improved dramatically through fall camp. That's a fact. I mean, there's no one that attended practice that wouldn't tell you anything different. We had former players there, and everybody had the same ***** ysis. And so, and we're not -- I'm not saying that Bryce played a bad game. This isn't on Bryce Underwood. This is, like I said, it's on me, and I've got to figure out a way to have these guys better prepared and be able to get into a rhythm offensively. It's like we never got into a rhythm after that first drive. We always found a way to screw it up. We were like 0-for-5 or 0-for-6 before we converted on third down. And you just can't win football games like that. We were very fortunate to win, obviously."

The plan is one of the most common in American retirement: sell the longtime house, move near an adult child and grandkids, and buy something smaller in the same school district. Then a job offer arrives in another state, or a spouse's career pulls the family elsewhere, and the retiree holds a house bought at retirement-age prices in a town chosen for a reason that no longer exists. Almost **** ody plans for this. Here is what it actually costs and what would have to be true for the move to still make sense.

JEPQ, DGRW, and JAAA together can convert a $250,000 life insurance lump sum into monthly deposits that replicate a working spouse's paycheck.
A $100,000 JEPQ allocation buys roughly 1,695 shares at $59, generating $8.46 annualized per share in monthly income with 18% yearly price gains.
JAAA's AAA-rated CLO holdings pay $2.70 per share annually with near-zero volatility, acting as the stable floor when equity markets drop.

Six weeks ago, the insurance company wired $250,000 into your checking account, and there it sits, earning almost nothing while you try to remember what day it is. That is fine. Life insurance death benefits are generally income-tax-free to the beneficiary, and no rule says grieving people have to make portfolio decisions on a schedule. When you are ready, though, three funds can turn that lump sum into a monthly deposit that behaves a lot like the paycheck your spouse used to bring home: JPMorgan Nasdaq Equity Premium Income ETF (NASDAQ:JEPQ), WisdomTree U.S. Quality Dividend Growth Fund (NASDAQ:DGRW), and Janus Henderson AAA CLO ETF (NYSEARCA:JAAA).

PHOENIX (AP) — Former U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema can be sued under North Carolina's homewrecker law over her relationship with a member of her security detail, a judge ruled Friday.
Sinema has acknowledged having a romantic relationship with Matthew Ammel but argued that she can't be sued in North Carolina because she has no connection to the state.
U.S. District Judge David A. Bragdon rejected that argument, saying nine text messages she sent Ammel while he was in the state give North Carolina jurisdiction over her. He found it implausible that she was unaware of Ammel's whereabouts when she texted him.
Sinema's lawyer, Steven Epstein, did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
The lawsuit, filed by Ammel's ex-wife, seeks financial damages from Sinema, who represented Arizona in the U.S. House and later the Senate for one term that ended early last year. North Carolina is one of a handful of states that allow jilted spouses to sue for "alienation of affection" to seek compensation from a third party responsible for the breakup of their marriage.

Selling an inherited rental home triggers a large taxable gain since depreciation reduces basis and the Section 121 home-sale exclusion doesn't apply.
IRMAA uses income from two years prior, so a large 2026 gain can push both spouses into Medicare's $649 monthly Part B tier by 2028.
A voluntary property sale disqualifies sellers from SSA-44 relief, but IRMAA resets annually, so higher premiums should last only one affected year.

A 68-year-old retiree in Ohio inherited his parents' three-bedroom colonial when his mother died in 2006. He never moved in. Instead, he rented it for 20 years before selling it this spring for a price that felt like a lottery win. He and his wife are both on Medicare. What they may not realize is that the sale can come back two years later in the form of substantially higher premiums.

The SECURE Act forces most non-spouse inherited IRA beneficiaries to fully empty the account within 10 years, with no life-expectancy stretch available.
Waiting until year 10 to withdraw a full inherited IRA balance stacks ordinary income on top of salary, pushing marginal rates to 32%.
Spreading withdrawals across all 10 years to fill the 22% and 24% brackets avoids the single-year income spike that triggers higher rates.

An inherited IRA is a retirement account passed to a beneficiary after the original owner dies. When the beneficiary is an adult child, the rules governing how quickly the money must be withdrawn have changed significantly under the SECURE Act. The scenario in the headline- a son who inherited a $220,000 IRA at age 60, deferred withdrawals, and then faced a forced distribution in year 10 that landed him in the 32% federal bracket- sits on a specific IRS rule that many beneficiaries misread.

Grief isn't the only thing losing a spouse triggers. You also have to make some big financial decisions, including whether to keep on with your Social Security retirement benefit or switch to a spousal benefit. You probably want to maximize your income, but there's no single strategy that works best for everyone.
Making the correct call between a retirement and a survivor benefit depends on understanding exactly how each benefit works. Here's what you need to know.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
A Social Security retirement benefit is the benefit you qualify for based on your own work history. The more money you've paid Social Security payroll taxes on throughout your career, the larger your retirement benefit will be.
Married people might get a spousal benefit if they didn't work long enough to qualify for a retirement benefit on their own, or if the spousal benefit, worth up to one-half of the benefit their partner qualified for at their full retirement age (FRA), is larger than their own retirement benefit. But you cannot claim a spousal benefit once your partner has died.

Nursing home bills can wipe out the tax on a Roth conversion when both occur in the same year, because deductible medical costs above 7.5% of AGI offset conversion income.
The strategy requires itemizing deductions and works only when the IRA owner and the patient are the same person, a spouse, or a qualifying dependent.
Each converted dollar raises AGI, lifting the 7.5% deduction floor, and a larger MAGI can trigger IRMAA Medicare surcharges two years later.

If you have a traditional IRA and someone in your household faces catastrophic nursing home bills, a tax interaction exists. A Roth conversion executed in the same year as enormous deductible medical costs can move IRA dollars into a Roth at a fraction of their normal tax cost, because the medical expense itemized deduction absorbs the taxable income the conversion generates. The strategy pairs two ordinary tools most people use separately, and the window closes at year-end.
#deductible
The strategy requires itemizing deductions and works only when the IRA owner and the patient are the same person, a spouse, or a qualifying dependent.
Each converted dollar raises AGI, lifting the 7.5% deduction floor, and a larger MAGI can trigger IRMAA Medicare surcharges two years later.

NEW YORK (AP) — Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli advanced to the U.S. Open mixed doubles final Wednesday night by rallying to end the run of spouses Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils.
Bencic and Cobolli won 4-5 (7), 4-1 (10-5) and waited to return to the Arthur Ashe Stadium court later against the winner of the second semifinal. Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik faced Mirra Andreeva and Andrey Rublev in that one.
The winning team receives $1 million.
Bencic and Cobolli knocked Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz out of the tournament Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
Then they dropped a set for the first time in the tournament, but began to dominate midway through the second set, winning the final 11 points to force a match tiebreaker.

The Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 killed the restricted application strategy for anyone born after January 1, 1954, closing it to all new claimants by 2026.
Deemed filing now forces spouses to claim both spousal and personal retirement benefits simultaneously, eliminating the ability to collect one while the other grows.
Couples can still delay the higher earner's benefit to 70 for roughly 8% annual growth, and sequence survivor benefits separately from retirement benefits.
Are you ahead, or behind on retirement? SmartAsset's free tool can match you with a financial advisor in minutes to help you answer that today. Each advisor has been carefully vetted, and must act in your best interests. Don't waste another minute; learn more here.
Picture a couple in their mid-sixties. Linda spent 35 years as a hospital administrator; Mark earned less as a school counselor. As they plan their Social Security claims, Linda remembers the move her older sister used years ago. She collected a spousal check while allowing the benefit on her own work record to grow until 70. Then she then dropped the smaller payment and switched to her larger one.

Solo retirement in The Villages runs roughly $60,000 a year, and with Social Security covering about $24,000 annually, the required portfolio falls somewhere between $900,000 and $1.03 million.
Survivor rules pay only the higher Social Security benefit, cutting roughly $19,000 in annual income while The Villages' fixed costs stay nearly unchanged.
Delaying Social Security to age 70 adds between $700 and $900 monthly and trims the required portfolio by roughly $200,000, hardening the plan against bad market years.

The pitch for The Villages is almost always drawn as a couple. Two people in a golf cart, matching polos, a shared front porch. Financial planning tends to follow the same picture: joint Social Security, one homeowner's insurance policy, food and utilities split between two. Then life edits the plan. A spouse dies, a marriage ends, or the move happens years after being widowed, and the same house, the same amenity fee, the same square footage now has one person paying for it. The question is what that actually costs and what portfolio makes it work.

When Luis Manuel Aviles was arrested by immigration authorities, his son was entering his ninth month on the USS Abraham Lincoln with the Navy — a vessel that set a U.S. military record for uninterrupted time at sea, stirring concerns about supply shortages and deteriorating mental health among soldiers.
Luis Manuel Aviles, 48, was arrested after leaving his house to take his car to the mechanic, according to his wife, Argelia Aviles. She said her husband, a handyman in Key West, Florida, has a permit to work in the United States. Originally from Nicaragua, he has lived in the U.S. for 19 years.
"He dedicates himself only to work so he can put food on the table at home. He is a good father. He loves his children with all his soul," said Argelia, 47.
Aviles' arrest comes as the Trump administration rolls back immigration protections for military families to pursue its mass deportation agenda, detaining at least dozens of parents and spouses of active-duty U.S. troops.
At least six family members have been deported and one self-deported, the AP found in the first accounting of such detentions, which the government does not track. One spouse, the wife of a U.S. soldier who spent more than a month in federal immigration detention, was removed from a deportation flight to Brazil after the AP's reporting.

Gary Owen says he expects to be "100% faithful" to his new wife, Brianna Johnson, after openly acknowledging that he cheated during his nearly 18-year marriage to Kenya Duke.
During a VladTV interview, the 52-year-old comedian said the biggest difference between his two marriages is intimacy. Owen claimed that he and Duke had ****** only three times during the final six years of their marriage and said the prolonged distance between them contributed to his past infidelity.
Owen stressed that he was not trying to criticize Duke, describing the lack of intimacy as mutual and saying they had effectively become roommates. He contrasted that experience with his relationship with Johnson, saying he now feels both physically and emotionally connected to his spouse and looks forward to returning home to her.
Owen and Johnson married at the Four Seasons Hotel Houston on March 7 after welcoming twin sons Royal and Rome in July 2023. Owen and Duke married in 2003 and separated in 2021 after nearly 18 years together. They share two adult children, Austin and Kennedy.
When DJ Vlad asked whether he planned to remain faithful in his second marriage, Owen said he expected "to be 100% faithful" and immediately contrasted his relationship with Johnson with the final years of his marriage to Duke.

Karen Attiah must be reinstated by The Washington Post and receive back pay after an arbitrator ruled the newspaper lacked sufficient cause to fire the opinion columnist over her social media posts following the ******* assination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Arbitrator Sarah Miller Espinosa found the Post "did not have good and sufficient cause" to terminate Attiah and failed to establish that she engaged in "gross misconduct," according to a decision obtained by The New York Times. Attiah was fired by the Post in September after posting about Kirk's killing on Bluesky.
"This decision confirms what we've said from the start: I was doing my job as an opinion writer, and this was wrongful termination," Attiah said in a statement, adding that she was "relieved to finally have that record set straight."
Attiah told the Times that she was "willing to go back" to the Post, which she called "one of the world's most storied newspapers." A Washington Post spokeswoman told the Times that the company respects the arbitration process and declined to comment further.
Attiah was fired after posting on Bluesky about the reaction to Kirk's ******* assination. In one post, she wrote, "Refusing to tear my clothes and smear ashes on my face in performative mourning for a white man that espoused violence is … not the same as violence."

Brian Hickerson's second attempt to clear felony domestic violence convictions involving Hayden Panettiere was denied three days before the actress died, after prosecutors challenged representations that he was now sober.
At an Aug. 13 hearing in Los Angeles, the prosecution cited a May interview Hickerson gave about his past relationship with Panettiere and alleged that he appeared to be under the influence of a stimulant. Court records obtained by PEOPLE show prosecutors also pointed to his 2025 encounters with law enforcement while opposing the petition.
Hickerson had asked the court to dismiss two felony convictions for corporal injury to a spouse or cohabitant from a domestic violence case in which Panettiere was a victim. Judge Olivia Rosales rejected the request, saying Hickerson had not remained free of new offenses.
The hearing took place three days before Panettiere died at age 36 in Greenville, South Carolina. Her death remains under investigation, and authorities have not established any connection between the allegations raised during Hickerson's court hearing and the circumstances of her death.
The interview cited in court was conducted by TMZ's Charlie Neff in May, ahead of the publication of Panettiere's memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. In the original TMZ interview, Hickerson discussed Panettiere's account of their abusive relationship and acknowledged conduct described in the book, including an incident in which he threatened her with a phone. "I did it. I did it," Hickerson said while discussing that episode.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck may have come unusually close to another post-divorce encounter in Los Angeles, but there is no evidence yet that the former spouses actually spent time together.
Both were photographed at the same West Hollywood office building on Aug. 20. Just Jared reported that Lopez and Affleck were each seen leaving the building that day, creating the possibility that their visits overlapped.
One detail made the timing particularly noticeable. Photographers noted that Affleck's purple Cadillac was parked nearby when Lopez arrived and would have been clearly visible to her.
They had a remarkably similar office-building overlap while separated in 2024 and later reunited publicly for a movie they were both professionally involved in.
The Aug. 20 photographs establish that Lopez and Affleck were at the same West Hollywood office complex during the same general period. They do not show the two arriving together, leaving together or interacting inside or outside the building.

Ricky Gervais is set to marry his partner of 44 years.
The Office creator admitted, however, that he hasn't changed his stance that marriage isn't necessary, saying rather that he is likely to wed author Jane Fallon in the coming years for tax purposes.
Assets left to your spouse or civil partner, provided they're living in the UK, are exempt from inheritance tax.
"And that will be the reason I marry," Gervais told Saga magazine. "It's mad. How more married can you be? We share all our money, we've been living together for 40 years. Some marriages don't last a year. It's horrible isn't it? I've got to get around to marrying, before I die."'
The comedian met Fallon when they were both 21 at university in London, and have been together ever since.
"We do everything together," he continued. "Go for a walk every day, eat every meal, watch telly on the couch."

The Brunei monarchy made headlines recently after the Sultan of Brunei sensationally stripped his daughter-in-law, Pengiran Raabi'atul Adawiyyah, of her royal ***** les.
A statement claimed that "the revocation was carried out following conduct by Pengiran Raabi'atul Adawiyyah that was deemed unbecoming of a spouse of a member of the royal family".
It added: "Her actions were also found to have tarnished the monarchy's good name and demonstrated a lack of respect towards Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah."
However, Pengiran isn't the first royal that the Sultan has stripped of their ***** les. The royal has been married three times, firstly to Pengiran Anak Saleha, the current Queen of Brunei. Brad Pitt considers himself an "optimist," but at one point in his life, the actor contemplated taking his life.
The two-time Academy Award winner expounded on his past grief in a new Esquire cover story, published Monday (August 10). Although Pitt didn't name where his period of depression stemmed from, the actor has been in a lengthy legal battle with his ex-wife, actress Angelina Jolie in the years since their 2019 divorce after five years of marriage.
While their children, both biological and adopted, have petitioned to drop 'Pitt' as their surname, Pitt has filed to obtain records of Jolie's income between 2017 to 2021. The conflict regards the sale of Jolie's stake in their French winery company Château Miraval, which the ex-spouses co-owned from 2008 to 2021. Since 2022, Pitt, 62, has been in a relationship with jewelry entrepreneur Ines de Ramon, 33.
Pitt told Esquire that he was "never suicidal in any way" and that thoughts about taking his life were not in his "makeup."
