Even great teams have room for improvement, and for the Dodgers in 2026, one of those paths is in the acquisition of a catcher. Will Smith has been out since early June with neck inflammation, and updates on his condition have put into question if and when the veteran might be back. We asked the fans if the Dodgers should proceed with the current depth chart believing in Smith's return or plan for the worst while they still can.
All in all, with the resources that this team possesses and the lack of holes to fill, to look for a catching addition feels like a given. Perhaps more than what we may see with the bat, the Dodgers ought to look at adding a steady presence, a catcher who can be relied on to not only do his job but also excel behind the plate defensively.
What adds layers to this debate is that for a team on the market for a catcher, there are legit game-changing options to at least call about. Although none of them are explicitly on the block, controllable beyond just this current campaign, Hunter Goodman, Shea Langeliers, and Adley Rutschman each could be seen within reason as trade candidates. Acquiring any of them, though, would inevitably back the Dodgers into a corner down the line since Smith is going nowhere long-term.
Perhaps in Minnesota, the Dodgers might find targets that are more their speed in Ryan Jeffers or Victor Caratini. Quietly, one of the better-hitting catchers in the AL over the last four seasons, Jeffers has been phenomenal with a .933 OPS in a short sample (44 games) due to missed time this year. With Caratini, who is under contract through next season at a reasonable rate, the Dodgers would be getting stability above all else, adding a player perfectly willing to fade into a backup role down the line. Caratini might even provide Rushing insurance if the youngster hits his way into staying on as a starter in the playoffs.

For a decade, one player's genius bought the Albiceleste the world's affection. His exit leaves the rest of the team standing there without it.
One image did the rounds after the 2026 World Cup Final: eleven men turning their backs on the winners, rather than facing them as tradition and basic grace require.
On July 19, in a stadium in New Jersey, the defending world champions stood in a row and stared at the grass while Spain lifted the trophy a few feet away. Not one of them watched. Behind them, Leandro Paredes had already grabbed a Spanish player by the throat and, per Alan Shearer, "threw two or three haymakers" into someone's face. Enzo Fernández had been sent off before extra time even started. Nahuel Molina reportedly took a swing at Rodri. FIFA has since appointed a prosecutor. That image, far more than the 1-0 scoreline, is what most of the planet took home from this final.

The MLB trade deadline is now under two weeks away. While everybody is focused on the big names who could be moved, like Tarik Skubal or Mason Miller, it can often be most beneficial to think about the players who remain and still wind up benefiting from the trade. In this article, I'm going to look at players who could see their fantasy value improve actionably at the deadline, whether they are the ones traded away or the ones who find themselves filling a vacated role.
For this article, I'm only going to focus on trades that seem likely. So I know that Shea Langeliers and Hunter Goodman are being floated in trade rumors, but I don't think either one of them is going to be moved, so we're not going to discuss which catchers could step into starting roles in two offensive-friendly environments. I will admit that left us with a list that doesn't include a lot of "league winners," but that's also the nature of the expanded playoff format. There are a lot of teams that still find themselves in contention, so we may not see as many impact hitters be traded away, which means there might be fewer openings in lineups.
With that preamble out of the way, let's get to the names.
Cole Carrigg - OF, Rockies: Carrigg has hit well in his rookie season, slashing .287/.367/.519 in 34 games with four home runs, 27 runs scored, and 23 RBI. He has slightly below-average barrel rates and hard-hit rates, so he's not tearing the cover off of the ball, but he has good bat speed and is making better-than-league-average zone contact, which is a nice profile in Coors Field. Yet, despite being a switch hitter, Carrigg seems to be splitting playing time with Tyler Freeman. A trade of one or both of Jake McCarthy and Mickey Moniak would open up an everyday role for Carrigg, who wouldn't be a MUST ADD, but would be a nice depth outfield piece in a great home park.
Victor Bericoto - OF, Giants: Bericoto is currently on the injured list with a strained oblique, but by the time the trade deadline rolls around, he will have already missed a month, which means he could be returning shortly thereafter. The rookie has slashed .293/.305/.552 in 59 plate appearances with four home runs, nine RBI, and one steal. He has a 46.5% hard-hit rate and also posted a 50.4% hard-hit rate in Triple-A while posting elite bat speed numbers, so the power production could be very real. He does have some swing and miss in his game because he is an aggressive hitter, but he also has league-average zone contact rates in the minors and a 91.5% rate in his limited MLB sample, so he might make enough contact to make the power work. The Giants are currently shopping Jung Hoo Lee, which could open up a regular outfield spot for Bericoto when he's back from injury.

Middlesbrough have won the race to sign England youth international striker Will Lankshear.
The 21-year-old had plenty of interest from clubs this summer but is Boro who have completed the signing of the player from Tottenham Hotspur with Lankshear penning a five-year deal with the club.
Reports suggest that the Championship side have paid an initial £10 million for the player which could rise by a further £10 million depending on add-ons.
"Middlesbrough is such a massive club over the years; I deem it to be a Premier League club," former Sheffield United youth product Lankshear said on his arrival.
"The project here really excites me. I can’t wait to get started and be part of the journey, and get this club back where it belongs."

Fulham are preparing to hijack Leeds United’s pursuit of Southampton midfielder Shea Charles, with the Premier League side readying a formal £24 million bid to beat their domestic rivals to the 22-year-old’s signature. Daniel Farke is at Elland Road.
The West London club have moved aggressively after a protracted transfer impasse between Leeds and Southampton. Leeds manager Daniel Farke had identified Charles as a top midfield priority for his summer rebuild, but the Yorkshire club have hit a significant boardroom wall, with three formal offers rejected as Southampton hold firm for £25 million plus add-ons.
Spotting an opportunity to outmanoeuvre Leeds, new Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa has given the green light for the club’s recruitment staff to submit an immediate £24 million opening proposal. Fulham’s pitch offers Charles an instant return to Premier League football, along with a defined tactical role in Arbeloa’s midfield plans.
For Southampton, balancing the books has become essential following their failure to secure Premier League promotion. As a Manchester City academy graduate and an established Northern Ireland international, Charles is one of St Mary’s most valuable financial ****** ets. Speculation around his future intensified this week after he was left out of Southampton’s pre-season opener against Eastleigh, further fuelling expectations of an imminent departure.
With Crystal Palace also monitoring the situation, Fulham are keen to accelerate formal negotiations in the coming days before Leeds can return with an improved fourth offer.

Penn State's offense needs to replace all four of its top six wingers next year, and Mignosa is arguably the best candidate in the freshman class that can immediately fit in the top six. He played five seasons with the Soo Greyhounds and averaged over a point per game in his final two seasons. He also stepped up during the Greyhounds' playoff run this year, tallying seven goals and 10 ****** ists in 10 games played.
The Nittany Lions have options to replace Gavin McKenna, JJ Wiebusch, Matt DiMarsico, and Aiden Fink. Luke Misa and Shea Van Olm may be ready for a bigger role offensively after a solid freshman season. Dane Dowiak will be back from injury. Someone new will have to take a top six winger spot, and Mignosa has the best profile of Penn State's freshmen to get the nod in the first game of the season. He has a solid future at Penn State. In his final two seasons with the Greyhounds, Mignosa was an alternate captain. We could be looking at a future captain of the Penn State hockey team.

Sanju Samson has revealed how Rohit Sharma's reassuring words during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 initially failed to convince him after being left out of India's playing XI in the latter stages of the tournament. However, the wicketkeeper-batter eventually rediscovered his confidence and responded with one of the defining knocks of India's campaign against the West Indies.

After Samson endured a disappointing five-match T20I series against New Zealand heading into the World Cup, Rohit made it clear that the Kerala batter still had an important role to play in India's campaign.

"Dukhi mat ho bhai. It is a long tournament, kabhi bhi mauka aa sakta hai." ("Don't be disheartened, brother. It is a long tournament. You'll get your chance. The opportunity can come anytime,") Rohit had told Samson while embracing him.
Reflecting on that difficult phase, Samson admitted he was too disappointed to believe his captain's words at the time.

"To be honest, I didn't believe him at that time. Sorry. He might have spoken from his heart or from his experience, but that day I wasn't able to see what he was seeing. You could see it on my face; I was a bit off that day," Samson told JioStar.

The Kerala batter said the disappointment lingered even after India's World Cup campaign began, making it difficult for him to move on immediately.

"Our World Cup campaign started two days after the New Zealand series, and it takes me at least a week to recover. I don't like to bottle things up, so it shows on my face if I'm not feeling 100 per cent. I went through that phase for four or five days before getting myself back on track," he added.
Samson said the setback eventually turned into an opportunity for self-reflection, helping him reconnect with his purpose as a cricketer.

"You know you've failed, so what's next? You're at the bottom, so from there, you can only go up. I started working on myself mentally. I started asking myself questions, why do I play cricket? What's my purpose? It was like I was rediscovering myself while the World Cup was going on. And then everything just came back," Samson said.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said this week that he received two calls from agencies suggesting Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., died while he was in the hospital.
In an interview with Katie Couric uploaded to YouTube on Thursday, Beshear, a Democrat, did not specify which agencies called him with the news or when the calls were made.
"In fact, I'd gotten two calls from different agencies, not state agencies, suggesting he'd passed," said Beshear, who has served as governor since December 2019.
Fox News Digital reached out to Beshear and McConnell's offices for comment.

Schwarber was wearing a microphone for FOX during his second at-bat of the game in the third inning, with the National League trailing 3-0.
Schwarber, who was talking with FOX broadcasters Joe Davis and John Smoltz, swung at the first pitch, and the earpiece came out of his ear. Schwarber tried to locate and grab the earpiece and said, "Whatever, f--- it."
Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers then helped with the earpiece while Schwarber smiled.

Major League Baseball’s night to celebrate its own has finally arrived. The 96th Midsummer Classic took place tonight at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. This is the fifth time an All-Star Game has been held in Philly, but the first time at Citizens Bank Park.
The A’s were represented by two deserving All-stars, Shea Langeliers who was the American League (AL) starting catcher, batting third in the lineup and Nick Kurtz who unfortunately couldn’t play due to his thumb injury.

The American League jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning against the Phillies hometown starter Cristopher Sánchez thanks to a Yordan Alvarez base hit, walks to our own Shea Langeliers, and Bobby Witt Jr. and then singles by the Yankees Cody Belanger and Ben Rice.
Shea led off the third inning against the Cardinals closer Riley O’Brien and singled to centerfield. He was erased on a fielder’s choice by Witt.

The Orioles only got to send one representative to the All-Star game this season, but Adley Rutschman earned the opportunity. Rutschman made his third All Star appearance after slashing .253/.327/.436 in the first half.
Rutschman’s strong start to the season represented a bounceback for the former first overall pick. The Oregon State product posted a below-average 89 OPS+ while missing time with oblique issues in 2025. Baltimore made waves by inking catcher Samuel Basallo to an eight-year extension and signing free agent Pete Alonso to a five-year deal, but it was Rutschman representing the Orioles in Philadelphia tonight.
Basallo and Alonso have played well for Baltimore. Alonso felt like a legitimate snub after slashing .252/.346/.474 with 21 homers in the first half, but Rutschman deserves credit for finding his way back into the spotlight.
That spotlight came with questions about trade rumors and potential contract extensions. Rutschman handled himself well this week without expressing anything really worthy of discussion. The backstop said he’s had a “phenomenal experience so far with Baltimore,” and reiterated that he doesn’t spend any time thinking about trade rumors or his contract. Rutschman is under team control in Baltimore through next season.
Rutschman was named an All-Star reserve behind AL starter Shea Langeliers and fellow reserve Dillon Dingler. Langeliers entered the break slashing .257/.324/.483 with 21 homers, and Dingler received the nod after slashing .262/.323/.508 with 19 long **** . Langeliers walked and scored a run in the first inning and singled in the third. Dingler struck out in his only at bat.

The regrettably Oriole-light 2026 edition of MLB’s All-Star Game gets under way at 8pm tonight, or however long after 8pm that it takes to do all of the pre-game activities – player introductions and all of that – that MLB doesn’t schedule before 8pm. You can watch the game on Fox and that’s it.
Adley Rutschman is among the American League reserves. It’s nice for him that he’s back in the game for the third time. Probably it was more fun a couple of years ago when he had several teammates there with him. His revival after a couple of down years has been important for the Orioles holding on to what they can so far this season and it is going to be significant for next year as well. He will probably catch two or three innings and get one or two at-bats tonight. Enjoy it while it lasts.

As the college football world turns, University of Hawaii head coach Timmy Chang remains grounded in his goals.
“I think college football has changed,” said Chang, who enters his fifth season as the Rainbow Warriors’ leader. “You have to be flexible to build a roster and compete. We’re doing that. We’re a different type of program. We’re in a different location. And that poses different factors and opportunities and challenges that we have to be able to adapt.”
Fifty-four months after inheriting a disheartened program that was in emotional turmoil, Chang is navigating an evolving landscape. The transfer portal has eased the way for players to change schools without interruption. Student-athletes may now profit from use of their name, image and likeness. The House vs. NCAA settlement requires profit sharing up to $20.5 million annually per school. (UH has budgeted $5 million for NILs and profit sharing this coming academic year, with $2.5 million earmarked for football.)
The Rainbow Warriors have been impacted living in a material whirl.
“Jackson Harris is an example,” Chang said of the wideout who received a lucrative NIL deal after transferring to LSU following the 2025 regular season. “I think he loved our program, but he left for the money.”

The pair of Bombers come after a star-studded top five in the AL lineup, starting with Mike Trout in center, Yordan Alvarez at DH, Shea Langliers at catcher, Junior Caminero at third, and Bobby Witt Jr. at shortstop. Riley Greene in left and Ernie Clement at second round out the lineup. Rice is somewhat hard-done-by with his slot in the lineup, his 166 wRC+ second in the AL behind only Alvarez, and Langliers is a curious choice from manager John Schneider (to bat third, the catcher having a great season but lacking the offensive skillset and pedigree of most of the other starters.
Otherwise, the lineup seems fair enough on paper, and it's very cool to see Trout, the once-and-forever legend who's been derailed by injuries, slot in at the top, in the midst of a resurgent (and yet still injury-ridden) campaign. He and Alvarez form an awesome one-two, and though I would personally have slotted Rice right in there at the three spot, it's hard to argue with Caminero and Witt's positions, the pair each among the game's brightest young stars.

New York City is set to move 110 single homeless men into a Brooklyn shelter without conducting criminal background checks, according to a new report, sparking outrage among residents who fear the change will bring more crime to their quiet neighborhood.
The former Gold Star Inn in Sheepshead Bay, which has operated as a family shelter for roughly a year, is expected to begin housing single adult men as early as next week after the city's Department of Homeless Services decided to relocate the 55 families currently living there, the New York Post first reported.
The move has alarmed nearby residents, who told the Post they have already seen an uptick in crime since the shelter opened and worry the transition to housing single men will exacerbate those problems.

You might have missed it because MLB is terrible at marketing its own product, but today was the Futures Game, the de facto All-Star game for minor-leaguers. It was also the second day of the MLB Draft, covering sixteen rounds in a single day, and the final day of the Mariners' current Road Trip From ****** , all conveniently happening at the same time – early on a Sunday here on the west coast. Like, 9 AM early. And also streamed on Peacock. Apparently while a helicopter hovered overhead directly next to the on-field mics. So it's actually more surprising if you did watch the American League prospects defeat the National League prospects, 6-1.
If you did tune in, hopefully it wasn't too late, because Kade Anderson appeared in the game for a flash. He was the AL squad's starting pitcher, and needed just ten pitches for his first and only inning of work. The box score will tell you that Anderson threw six of his ten pitches for strikes and the box score is a liar, because HP umpire Alex Shears engaged in a bit of nominative determinism and clipped Anderson for two pitches at the bottom of the zone that should have been ruled strikes.
Anderson's outing will likely be overlooked in favor of Pirates prospect Seth Hernandez – who might have been a Mariner if the Angels had actually taken Anderson as everyone expected them to instead of whatever it was they did in the 2025 draft – as Hernandez had a clean 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts where his fastball touched 101 mph. Big stuff, very nasty (was gifted a strike call outside the zone, not that I'm counting).
But Anderson was a quiet ****** assin on the mound, a model of efficiency cutting through the top of the NL lineup. He elicited a weak contact popout from leadoff hitter Eli Willits of the Nationals on the second pitch of his at-bat on a perfectly located fastball up and in. Anderson fell behind his next hitter, the Rockies' Roldy Brito, 2-1, as he couldn't quite get the feel for his changeup, but then dropped in a slider Brito swung over for a weak contact comebacker cleanly fielded by Anderson. The Brewers' Jesús Made ruined what should have been a clean 1-2-3 inning for Anderson, swinging at a 95 mph fastball in at his knees in a 1-1 count (should have been an 0-2 count) and managing to parachute it weakly into right field, where it dropped into no-man's-land between the second baseman and right fielder. But Anderson recovered against Rockies prospect Charlie Condon, getting a first pitch flyout on a slider that was actually the hardest hit ball all day against Anderson at 97 mph. Maybe it's a factor of pitching at ****** ey-Stephens Park, but Anderson seemed to know without turning around that the ball was destined for an outfielder's glove.

The Boston Red Sox are the hottest team in baseball, and have been for the past couple weeks. They are 13-2 in their last 15 games, and have swept three of their last four series, and are looking to sweep the fourth today against the New York Mets.
However, it seems like they might be messing with a good thing by introducing a new, chaotic variable: pitcher Brayan Bello. It's been reported that today's starting pitcher, Payton Tolle, will be on a pitch count, and Bello will come in as a long reliever.

Overall, this has been a terrible season for Bello. In the MLB, Bello was 2-6 with a 6.34 ERA, 44 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.672 over 61 innings pitched. He then was demoted to the minors, where he didn't fare much better.

Viewers were left stunned by Norway manager Stale Solbakken’s decision to substitute star striker Erling Haaland in extra time of their World Cup quarter-final with England, sparking injury fears.
Haaland has been at the heart of Norway’s impressive run at their first World Cup since 1998, scoring seven goals - including two in their sublime last-16 win over Brazil - to take the Scandinavian side to the last-eight.
But with Norway needing his goalscoring heroics more than ever as they trailed 2-1 to England, Haaland was bizarrely substituted at half-time of extra time by Solbakken.
He was replaced by Crystal Palace striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, who had battled illness the week prior to be fit for the clash in Miami.
“It has to be an injury,” Alan Shearer told BBC Sport. “There is no way you take Haaland off if you are in desperate need of a goal.”
