LONDON, Sept 10 (Reuters) - The first visitors to the British Museum's blockbuster Bayeux Tapestry exhibition spoke of their excitement at seeing with their own eyes the 1,000-year-old embroidery many remember from school lessons.
The sell-out display, which opened to the public on Thursday, has sparked a Bayeux craze across Britain, with newspapers producing special guides, online discussions about securing tickets, and the pub opposite the museum temporarily changing its name to "The Beer Tapestry".
The masterpiece will be shown at the museum in central London for the next 10 months, having left France for the first time since the 11th century. It depicts the Norman invasion of England in 1066, the most famous date in the nation's history.
"It's just magical, isn't it?" said Pauline Gairey, 53, a finance professional who had travelled from Wales, and recalled studying the tapestry at school.

Wynonna Judd's daughter, Grace Pauline Kelley, is reportedly pregnant in prison.
Last month, a judge denied Kelley's motion for a temporary release to give birth to her second child, according to court documents obtained by Us Weekly on Wednesday, August 26.
The documents stated that Kelley's legal team requested the release on July 2 and said she's expecting a baby "on or about August 16."
While Kelley must remain in custody, the documents reportedly stated that the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office would take her to the hospital for a scheduled cesarean section.
It is unclear whether or not the 30-year-old has already given birth.

Earlier this month, the Indiana Fever were riding high as one of the hottest teams in the league, winning five consecutive games. On Saturday, however, the Fever suffered their second consecutive loss after some late-game mistakes from Caitlin Clark.
While the losses obviously weren't what the Fever were hoping for, Clark was already looking at Sunday's game against the Chicago Sky as an opportunity to bounce back almost as soon as Saturday's game ended.
Late in Saturday's matchup against the Liberty, Clark had possession of the ball with just under 50 seconds remaining and the Fever trailing 103-100.
Rather than attempt a three-pointer to potentially even the score or look for a high-percentage shot, Clark drove to the basket and attempted to draw a foul. However, Clark didn't get the call, and the Liberty got the rebound.
Instead of quickly getting back on defense and working to keep the game within one possession, Clark took her time getting back to her feet while visibly showing her frustration with the referees. Once she finally returned to the defensive end, she immediately committed an unnecessary foul on Liberty guard Pauline Astier, prompting visible frustration from teammate Kelsey Mitchell.

Earlier this month, Caitlin Clark drew criticism from fans and media after she missed two free throws that would have essentially clinched the game for her team in a game the Indiana Fever ultimately lost in overtime. Now, Clark is facing criticism for her late-game performance yet again.
During Saturday night's game against the New York Liberty, Clark had the ball in her hands with a chance to tie the game in the final minute of regulation, but she made some puzzling choices that ultimately resulted in a loss for the Fever.
Late in Saturday's game against the Liberty, Clark had the ball with just under 50 seconds remaining on the clock with the Fever trailing by a score of 103-100. Instead of going for a three-point shot to potentially tie the game or working the ball for a high-percentage shot, Clark drove toward the basket and flailed to try to draw a foul, but it wasn't given.
Instead of getting back on defense quickly and trying to keep it a one-score game, Clark was slow to get up as she expressed her frustration with the referees. When she did eventually get back on defense, she immediately fouled Liberty guard Pauline Astier unnecessarily, eliciting visible frustration from teammate Kelsey Mitchell, who led the team with 25 points and extended her WNBA record of 22 consecutive games with at least 20 points.
Things got even worse for Clark on the next offensive possession. Clark went to the free-throw line with 24 seconds left with a chance to cut it to a one-possession game. However, just like the previous crunch time situation, Clark missed both free throws to essentially seal the loss.

Where to watch Tour de France Femmes 2026: Full schedule, stages, times, TV channels, live streams for women's race originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The top women's cyclists in the world will race for the yellow jersey as the Tour de France Femmes returns for a fifth edition.
The 2026 race consists of nine stages that will take the riders from Lausanne, Switzerland to the ultimate finish line in Nice. This will be the longest Tour de France Femmes yet, covering 1,175 kilometers (730 miles) and featuring a finish atop the iconic Mont Ventoux.
The reigning champion is Pauline Ferrand-Prevot of France, who was known primarily as a mountain biker before she took a pair of stage wins last year en route to the yellow jersey, but it's fair to say she won't enter as a favorite to repeat.
The Dutch riders, long dominant in the sport, have been strong once again in 2026. Demi Vollering won the Giro d'Italia in June, giving her a victory in all three major week-long stage races after previous triumphs in the Tour de France (2023) and La Vuelta Femenina (2024, 2025). Her veteran countrywoman Anna van der Breggen is also worth watching after podium finishes earlier this year at the Vuelta (third) and Giro (second).

Princess Leonor turned heads as she debuted one of her most striking looks to date for the Spanish royal family's annual summer reception at Marivent Palace.
The 20-year-old heir to the Spanish throne joined her parents, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, alongside her younger sister Infanta Sofía and grandmother Queen Sofía, for the traditional gathering, which welcomes representatives from institutions and organisations across the Balearic Islands.
While Queen Letizia kept things effortlessly elegant in an ivory striped Sybilla dress and King Felipe opted for a relaxed blue linen shirt with dark trousers, it was Leonor and Sofía who brought the colour to the royal family's annual appearance.

Leonor looked radiant in a fiery two-piece ensemble by Spanish sustainable fashion label Thinking Mu. The sleeveless Dora top and coordinating Pauline pleated maxi skirt featured painterly shades of crimson, burnt orange and golden yellow, punctuated with unexpected flashes of blue that evoked a dramatic Mediterranean sunset.

Dutch sprinter Lorena Wiebes held on to a select group over a punchy climb before bolting in the final metres to take the Tour de France Femmes opening stage and first yellow jersey.
Last year's green jersey winner was favourite to win the 85.5-mile out-and-back route from Swiss city Lausanne but was put under serious pressure on a 1.5-mile 4.1% climb just before the finish line.
The 27-year-old Team SD Worx-Protime rider held on to a group of about 20 riders and sprinted away with 200 metres left to win by a bike's length from Mauritius' Kim le Court-Pienaar and Dutch 2023 champion Demi Vollering.
Last year's champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevot, of France, finished in the same group as Wiebes and general classification rival Vollering.
Wiebes' victory was her sixth at the Tour, extending her lead as the rider with the most Tour de France Femmes stage wins since the race's return to the World Tour in 2022.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Lorena Wiebes won the opening stage of the Women's Tour de France on Saturday.
The Dutch cyclist, who represents the SD Worx-Protime team, claimed the flat 137-kilometer (85-mile) ride that started and finished in the city of Lausanne and took the competitors past two lakes locked in the Swiss Alps.
Kim Le Court crossed the finish line second, ahead of Demi Vollering, who has won multiple races this year including the Giro d'Italia.
"I can't believe it," Wiebes said. "The SD Worx-Protime team worked super-hard. Demi attacked, I thought, 'I need to follow'. It was a super-long sprint."
French rider Pauline Ferrand-Prévôt, who won the race last year, finished eighth while Vuelta winner Paula Blasi was 12th.

The Tour de France Femmes begins on Saturday with possibly the most difficult route yet for women's cycling's flagship race.
This year the peloton will tackle the infamous Mont Ventoux on a gruelling stage seven, the queen stage of the nine-day race, but the battle for the general classification could go right down to the wire with four summits of the Col d'Eze, outside Nice, crammed into less than 100km in an explosive final stage.
Dutchwoman and 2023 champion Demi Vollering is arguably the favourite to regain her crown but will face fierce competition from reigning champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevot, who has had a mixed season but with everything building towards her **** le defence, and 2024 winner Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney, who has finished on the podium in every edition.
Elsewhere Britain's Zoe Backstedt is one of the favourites to take a maiden stage win on stage four's individual time trial, as the 21-year-old makes her Tour de France debut.
Here's everything you need to know to watch the race.

The Tour de France Femmes begins in Lausanne, Switzerland on Saturday - but it's the race's first ascent of the iconic Mont Ventoux that is really exciting fans.
Riders will cover 1,175km across nine stages - the most since the event returned to the World Tour calendar as a stage race in 2022.
That includes the stage-seven slog up one of the most iconic climbs in the sport's history - to the telecommunications and meteorological tower on the top of Provence's Mont Ventoux.
Ventoux has been an iconic mountain stage for the men's Tour for generations, won by legendary figures such as Eddy Merckx, Marco Pantani and Chris Froome.
Alongside in-form rivals such as the Netherlands' Demi Vollering of FDJ-Suez United, last year's winner Pauline Ferrand-Prevot of Visma Lease a Bike will be hoping to steal a march.

NEW YORK (AP) — Sabrina Ionescu scored 26 points, Breanna Stewart added 25 and the New York Liberty beat the Las Vegas Aces 93-85 to win the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup on Tuesday night.
Las Vegas was missing four-time MVP A’ja Wilson, who tweaked her right ankle on Sunday in a win over Chicago. The Aces gave the Liberty all they could handle thanks to the stellar play of Jackie Young, who scored 25 of her 31 points in the second half.
The Aces led 71-69 early in the fourth quarter before New York went on a 15-2 run to take back control. Pauline Astier got the run started with a 3-pointer with 7:08 left and the Liberty were off and running.
Ionescu’s 3-pointer capped the burst and made it 84-73 with 3:39 left. Las Vegas wasn’t done, getting within 86-82 on Young’s 3 with 2:26 left. She had a chance to get the Aces within three with 37 seconds remaining, but missed a contested layup. Ionescu then hit a 3-pointer on the other end to seal the victory.
It’s the second time the Liberty won the in-season tournament, also beating Las Vegas in 2023. New York is the first team to win that championship twice since it first started being played in 2021.

What a show Lionel Messi has put on yet again. Another record for the history books. La Pulga took the World Cup scoring record from Miroslav Klose and once again showed the world why he is considered the greatest footballer of all time.
In this debate, many fans can probably only really judge players from their own and perhaps the previous generation. How good a Pelé, a Johan Cruyff, a Franz Beckenbauer or a Diego Maradona actually were cannot necessarily be determined from a few highlight clips alone. So in the interest of fairness, you would need eyewitnesses.
That is where superfan Pauline Kana comes in. At a proud 100 years old, she is probably one of the oldest Messi fans and once even saw a young Pelé play.
The American runs highly successful social media channels together with her grandson Ross Smith. The two originally became famous in 2013 with short comedy videos on Vine, which later grew into their major channels on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. On TikTok alone, the so-called "Gangster Granny" has more than 25 million followers.
She may not be a football expert, but she has developed a great passion for the game and has followed Messi to stadiums around the world for years. She is a regular at Inter Miami matches. Last year, she even made a media-friendly marriage proposal to Messi at the Club World Cup. That at least put a smile on Messi's face and earned a "thumbs up" from the superstar. In the GOAT debate, however, Pauline may by now be a little biased.

We have a lot to talk about this week. McDonald’s World Cup cups, the actual World Cup… and more.
Since prediction markets are hot right now, I am going down a list of cool stuff and giving percent chances things will happen. Let’s dive in!!
1. Chance Pauline Astier is a Sophie Cunningham-style phenomenon by the end of this WNBA season (74%)
ATTENTION EVERYONE: We have a new official Favorite WNBA Player here at Mail Day, and her name is Pauline Astier. And, of course, as it was with Cam Schlittler and everyone else we fall in card-love with here… she has no official rookie card.
There’s a Slam Deck card from 2023 – the set that became famous for having Victor Wembanyama’s non-SI For Kids “rookie” card. And there are a couple Panini Instants that can lay claim to being her “rookie” – but nothing in any sets yet. This isn’t the fault of Panini, just to be clear! Astier is an undrafted rookie who signed with the Liberty in May. That’s a tough turnaround.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Breanna Stewart scored 28 points, including a key putback with 24.8 seconds left, Han Xu had 14 points in her first career WNBA start, and the New York Liberty beat the Connecticut Sun 89-80 on Monday night.
Xu started in place of Jonquel Jones, who was a late scratch because of an illness. Jones, who spent six years with the Sun before coming to New York in 2023, had her No. 35 jersey retired by Connecticut before the game.
Connecticut got within 85-80 with 45.9 seconds remaining — the closest the Sun had been in the fourth quarter. Then, Pauline Astier drove into the lane at the other end for a layup attempt that didn’t hit the rim, but Stewart got the offensive rebound and putback.
Betnijah Laney-Hamilton scored 11 points off the bench for New York (8-4), which has won five straight games.
Olivia Nelson-Ododa and Aaliyah Edwards each scored 15 points — both season highs — for Connecticut (2-11), which has lost three straight games. Saniya Rivers scored 12, and Diamond Miller had 10.

New York Liberty rookie guard Pauline Astier piloted the offense down the stretch, and Breanna Stewart fueled a second-half comeback that amounted in an 83-75 win over the Indiana Fever on Saturday at Barclays Center in Commissioner’s Cup play.
The Fever led for most of the first half and by as many as nine points in the opening two quarters, and that's despite Clark struggling early. She was 0 of 5 from the floor in the first quarter and didn't make her first field goal until more than three minutes into the second frame.
Although Liberty guard Marine Johannes drilled a pair of 3-pointers in the game's infancy, New York quickly went cold from downtown. In fact, head coach Chris DeMarco's team, which came in third in the WNBA with a 36.8% clip from 3, missed 16 of its 18 long-range attempts, clocking out with its fewest-made 3s in a game since 2022.
Indiana received a sizable boost from forward Monique Billings. She went scoreless in the Fever's previous two outings. This time around, though, she piled up a season-high 15 points and eight rebounds. Billings helped the Fever create separation late in the first quarter after the score was knotted 15-15. Five quick points from the veteran did the trick.
Indiana entered the second quarter with a four-point advantage. The Fever remained in control as Clark started to find her footing as a scorer. She knocked down her patented step-back 3 midway through the frame.
