Steve Nicol took umbrage with one post-match comment on the stoppage-time penalty decision in Liverpool's 2-2 draw against Newcastle on Sunday.
The Reds were awarded a spot kick deep into added time when Lewis Hall clashed into Victor Munoz inside the box, and Dominik Szoboszlai duly converted to ensure a share of the spoils at St James' Park.
Gary Neville said on co-commentary for Sky Sports that it was the right decision, insisting that the Magpies left-back fouled the Spanish winger and didn't get any of the ball, but the home side's head coach Matthias Jaissle argued that the awarding of the penalty was 'really soft'.
That comment from the 38-year-old annoyed Nicol, who retorted that there's no grey area when it comes to such penalty decisions.

Rillet co-founder and CEO Nicolas Kopp seems justifiably confident as we talk over Zoom a day after his company announced a $100 million raise at a $1 billion valuation. The U.S. has a shortage of accountants right now, which is driving growth of his AI-native accounting platform so much, he raised that cash in 48 hours without even trying.
Rillet emerged from stealth two years ago. Since then, it has raised $200 million from top investors like Iconiq, Andreessen Horowitz, and Sequoia. It's also amassed 600 customers, most of whom are looking to ditch legacy accounting systems like Oracle and NetSuite, Kopp says.
A few weeks ago, Rillet held a board meeting and shared with investors its growth since its $70 million Series B last summer. Annualized revenue rate had doubled in the last quarter alone; the startup added new clients, many of them public companies, and an alliance with EY to introduce AI tools to the auditing giant.
His customers aren't piloting Rillet either, he said — they're yanking out ERP and accounting software from competitors like Intuit, NetSuite, or Oracle.

Aug. 21—GRAND FORKS — Nicole Kopff has been coaching with the Grand Forks Red River girls cross country program for 11 years. After becoming the program's lone head coach in 2023, Kopff will guide her largest roster yet this season.
The Roughriders currently have 40 runners. It's the largest group since 2021, when the program had 42 athletes.
This year's number could grow after other fall sports cut their rosters.
"I really think we've found an identity," Kopff said. "We had two runner-up finishes at state (in 2021 and 2022), we were very, very close. ... I think that set our momentum, that we can have more girls. Girls want to work hard too, and I think the word got out.
"Because our atmosphere is so open and welcoming, we've had a lot of girls who have joined running late that have fallen in love with it and stayed. The reason we're built as big as we are is the foundation of our core values."

A Bloomberg report on August 18 revealed that BP plc (NYSE:BP) has become the latest foreign company to enter the Venezuelan oil trade, with the tanker Monte Lema loading 400,000 barrels of heavy fuel oil for the British energy giant. The oil is being supplied by the state-owned PDVSA. The strategic move places BP among a select group of companies, including trading giants Trafigura and Vitol, with direct access to Venezuelan oil.
The development comes a few days after it was announced that the London-based company would partner with two other firms to develop the second phase of the Loran gasfield, in one of the first large-scale foreign investments in the South American country since the ouster of Nicolás Maduro earlier this year. That said, while the consortium has secured the official exploration and production license, the project remains in the pre-FID phase.
The developments come after President Trump called for global oil companies to invest in Venezuela and help restore and modernize its dilapidated oil infrastructure. The South American nation is sitting on the largest proven crude oil reserves in the world, accounting for roughly 17% of the global total. However, the oil-rich country's government nationalized major heavy oil projects in 2007, forcing foreign operators into minority stakes or outright seizing their **** ets.
As a relatively early mover, BP plc (NYSE:BP) stands to gain a lot from a gradual revival of Venezuelan oil output. The company appears to be positioning itself across multiple areas of Venezuela's energy value chain – from exploration to production, to trading and international marketing. It means that the energy giant could benefit from the country in many ways as it reconnects with global energy markets.
Moreover, BP's entry into the Venezuelan oil trade could give it an opportunity to capture trading margins in addition to upstream earnings. This could be particularly beneficial for the company as it could potentially leverage its already existing refining, marketing, shipping, and trading infrastructure in the region. Although Trafigura and Vitol have an early foothold in Venezuela's oil trading business, BP's large integrated energy business gives it a significant competitive edge.

Atletico Madrid are moving with some urgency in the transfer market, and Nicolas Jackson has emerged as a serious target. According to Marca, Mateu Alemany travelled to London on Thursday in an attempt to push discussions forward for the Chelsea forward, with Atletico seeking attacking help after an injury to Alexander Sorloth and with Julian Alvarez still short of top condition.
This is the sort of deal that makes sense on several levels, even if the mechanics look awkward. Atletico want another forward, Jackson knows Spanish football, and Chelsea have a squad that still feels crowded in key attacking areas. The issue, as ever, is cost. Atletico have already stretched themselves after the Cristian Romero deal, reported as £33 million plus £7 million in variables, so any move for Jackson appears dependent on favourable terms.
That means a loan is the obvious route, with Atletico reportedly hoping Chelsea would cover part of the player's salary. In plain terms, they want quality without paying the full freight. Clubs across Europe are trying the same trick, because the market is inflated and proven attacking players are expensive.
Marca's report places Jackson among the preferred options inside the Metropolitano. There are other names under consideration, but his profile is clear. He has pace, he attacks **** e, and he already showed in Spain that he can trouble defenders at a high level. His rise at Villarreal earned him a move to Chelsea for around £37 million after Bournemouth failed to complete a transfer for him earlier in that season.

Venezuela's new petroleum minister sees her South American home not as a dilapidated former oil giant, but as an emerging energy economy ripe for U.S. and foreign investments in new oil and gas exploration, both onshore and offshore.
Paula Henao, who took over as the hydrocarbons minister in March after the forced U.S. removal of former leader Nicolás Maduro, told an overflowing Houston energy audience on Wednesday that Venezuela is much more than just its famed heavy-grade crude oil. There are more than 916 exploration opportunities awaiting foreign investment, she said, including natural gas and other untapped oil basins. She cited an estimated 192 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves, as well as the country's world-leading proven oil reserves of more than 300 billion barrels.
"It's an entire world waiting to be discovered, just waiting for us to reach these agreements so we can develop these new areas," Henao said in Spanish to the crowd at the posh Post Oak Hotel in Houston.
Henao and leaders of the Venezuelan state oil company, PDVSA, were in Houston this week for meetings and a showcase event in advance of a bigger Venezuela Energy Week in February in Caracas.
"Go to Venezuela to invest, go to Venezuela to develop businesses there," said PDVSA Vice President Jovanny Martinez, also speaking in Spanish. "We are at the right place at this historical moment. We have the energy that the world requires."

HLN are reporting that Barcelona are now joining Chelsea and Manchester United in monitoring Club Brugge striker Nicolo Tresoldi. The young German forward has already been the subject of serious interest from AS Roma, who had a bid of around €35m rejected by Club Brugge. For Barcelona, they had been hoping to bring in Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid, but the Argentinian forward will remain in Madrid for the time being. Hansi Flick is said to be keen on Tresoldi joining Barcelona, with the German head coach having already seen the striker up close when he scored against Barcelona for Club Brugge during the Champions League last season.
However, Barcelona will have to submit an offer that Club Brugge simply cannot refuse if they want to secure Tresoldi. The Belgian champions are keen to keep the striker for at least one more year, as they believe his value will only increase after a stellar first season with the club. They have also already lost a key player from last seasons ***** le winning side in Christos Tzolis and, while they would sell if the offer was astronomical, have ambitions of going deep in Europe and regaining the ***** le, with Tresoldi a key component in those ambitions. Manager Oran Kearney says he hopes Ballymena United can build on a "positive" start to the season against Glentoran on Friday.
The Sky Blues stunned Linfield 3-0 on the opening weekend of the season but lost 2-1 at Crusaders in their second outing.
Ballymena had a big turnover of players over the summer with 11 new arrivals at the Showgrounds, but Kearney is pleased with their start to the campaign.

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten first celebrated his nation's 3-1 win over Argentina at the men's Hockey World Cup on home soil on Tuesday and then kissed opposition player and his partner Nicolas Keenan.

The 59-year-old actress looked incredible as she slipped into a tiny blue bikini while relaxing in a hot tub aboard a luxury yacht, taking in the spectacular ocean views around her.
Nicole appeared completely at ease as she rested her arms along the edge of the hot tub and gazed out towards the horizon, with her blonde hair swept into an effortless bun.
The Big Little Lies star shared the photographs on Instagram on Wednesday, telling her 11 million followers that the vacation had been the "trip of a lifetime".

Following the Washington-led removal of Venezuela's previous president, Nicolás Maduro, from office on 3 January this year, U.S. firms are pushing hard to keep increasing oil production from the hydrocarbons giant, in line with President Donald Trump's grand plans for the country within his new world order. The foundation for such output increases is extremely solid, as Venezuela still holds the world's largest proven crude reserves -- roughly 303 billion barrels, or about 17% of the global total. Most of this is extra-heavy crude oil from the Orinoco Belt that requires more technical expertise to handle than lighter grades but is cheaper to lift and often more profitable to process, with the challenge lying in transporting, upgrading, and refining it, not extracting it. Moreover, of its 14 supergiant oil fields, 11 retain more than half of their original reserves. Once up and running to something approaching full capacity, the country is to play a key role in the 'Americas' geographical sphere -- one of three such regions, as delineated recently in the U.S.'s '2025 National Security Strategy' -- so where are we now in this development arc following comments in the past week or so from U.S. oil and gas giant, Chevron?
According to chief financial officer Eimear Bonner, during a recent earnings call, the U.S. supermajor has increased its oil production in Venezuela from 40,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 250,000 bpd over the past few years. And, based solely on its three current joint ventures in the country, output has risen over just the past six months by 12% year on year to 280,000 bpd. This followed the mid-April announcement of an **** et-swap agreement with Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA), under which Chevron received an additional 13.21% interest in the Petroindependencia joint venture, increasing its total stake to 49%. The U.S. firm's other two joint ventures include Petropiar (in which a Chevron subsidiary holds a 30% interest and has the rights to develop the adjacent Ayacucho 8 area in the Orinoco Oil Belt), and Petroindependiente (in which it has a 25.2% non-operated interest in the west of the country). Looking ahead, Bonner added that Chevron expects its production across Venezuela to rise by 50% between now and the end of 2028, which would bring the total up to 420,000 bpd. Across the country as a whole, July saw average crude oil production by Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA and its foreign partners increase by 20,000 bpd to 1.21 million bpd, according to Ministry of Hydrocarbons data. Nearly all of this is now exported, compared to an average of 847,000 bpd in 2025. That said, back in the early 2000s, Venezuela's crude production was running at over 3 million barrels per day.

Now, the two have the LGBTQ+ community cheering for them once again after Keenan walked over to get a kiss from Jetten at the FIH Hockey World Cup.
The sweet moment, caught on camera and posted on Instagram by the Royal Dutch Hockey **** ociation, shows Keenan walking over to the stands where Jetten is cheering him on while wearing his fiancé's jersey. The two men reach over the divider to hug, and Jetten plants a kiss on Keenan's cheek.

The kiss between the couple happened after Keenan and his teammates won a match against **** an 3-0. The tournament kicked off on August 15 and will run until August 30.
