When we moved to our former house in the Tradition neighborhood of Port St. Lucie, Fla., we had two Starbucks, two Dunkin's, and two local coffeehouses within a few miles of our house. A few years later, when we moved away, we still had two Starbucks, but the local, independent chains had both closed.
In their place, we added 7 Brew, Cali Coffee, Carmela (a regional chain), Vicky Bakery (a popular Cuban cafe chain), another Dunkin', and a new independent coffee place.
It's a staggering amount of competition in a fast-growing section of the city that's only a few square miles. All of those added competitors come at a time when the overall market has been growing, but seems to have hit a wall.
"The Coffee and Snack Shops industry has experienced a wave of growth, emerging as a standout performer in the food service sector. It boasts an annualized growth rate of 2.5%, shooting revenues up to $75.5 billion over the five years to 2026," according to IBISWorld's Coffee & Snack Shops in the US Industry Data and ***** ysis.
Nationally, Americans also have more places to get their daily cup.

PORT ST. LUCIE – It was the proverbial what a difference a week makes, not only for Makai White but the entire Vero Beach High football team.
White nearly was perfect in his first full week as the Vero Beach starting quarterback, and all three phases contributed in the scoring in a 56-0 whitewash of St. Lucie West Centennial High in a Class 6A-District 8 game Friday, Sept. 11 at South County Regional Park.
Coming off a 38-6 setback to nationally ranked St. Frances Academy of Baltimore, Vero Beach turned the tides on the Eagles in the district opener for both teams.
Vero Beach exploded for 35 points in the first quarter and 49 in the first half.

Caleb Crowe rolled a perfect game during the Wolves' match against Fort Pierce Central on Wednesday, Sept. 10 from St. Lucie Lanes.
The freshman, who was voted as TCPalm's Boys Athlete of the Week for the Aug. 31-Sept. 5 playing period, became the first bowler to roll a 300 since Nathan Mondo accomplished the feat for the Cobras in 2024.

On September 1st, major league rosters expand to 28-players, and tomorrow the Mets are reportedly calling up right-handed pitcher Justin Hagenman and right-handed outfielder Nick Morabito.
The plan for Hagenman is to have him start on Wednesday against Tampa Bay, giving an extra day of rest to the Mets' young trio of Christian Scott, Nolan McLean, and Zac Thornton heading into the weekend series with the Giants.
Hagenman appeared in nine games for the Mets in 2025, starting one game, and did not pitch vey well, putting up a 4.48 ERA over 23.2 innings. Hagenman fractured a rib during spring training and has been on the shelf all year. Wednesday's start will be only his fourth game of the 2026 season, getting one rehab start in St. Lucie, Binghamton, and Syracuse, giving up home runs in two of those games.
Hagenman was not promised any starts beyond Wednesday, according to Gary Cohen on the Mets' broadcast.
Morabito appeared in five games for the Mets earlier this season, before A.J. Ewing emerged as the Mets' everyday center fielder, and was hitless in 11 plate appearances. At Triple-A Syracuse, Morabito hit .254/.355/.388 with 13 home runs and 42 stolen bases.

Jarrod Kelly returned the opening kickoff 69 yards for a touchdown and the Bulldogs never looked back in a 48-0 triumph over Legacy High School on Thursday evening, Aug. 27 at South County Regional Park.
Last week, South Fork returned a punt for a score in a 45-0 whitewash of Port St. Lucie High.
"I just saw the hole and ran and took it to the house," Kelly said of his first kickoff return for a score this season.
"It's always good when you get scores on special teams," South Fork coach Eric Kresser said.

A Florida high school football player has been held on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) hold for over a week, as first reported by TCPalm, part of the USA TODAY Network.
Emmanuel Nelson, an 18-year-old senior at Port St. Lucie High School, was driving a silver Toyota SUV when he was pulled over for going 45 mph in a 20-mph school zone, according to St. Lucie County court records obtained by USA TODAY. He received a citation for unlawful speed in a school zone on Wednesday, Aug. 19.
According to the police report, which was obtained by USA TODAY on Aug. 27, in the midst of the traffic stop, the officer ran Nelson's driver's license, which revealed he wasn't a U.S. citizen and that his working permits had expired. Nelson is originally from Haiti.
Because Nelson is a documented non-U.S. citizen, the officer contacted ICE, which placed a detainer on Nelson to determine where he should be placed into deportation proceedings. He was then arrested in handcuffs and transported to the St. Lucie County jail, where he was held for a week before being transferred to ICE custody in Broward County, where he remains as of this publication.
"It's just been a weird situation for the whole team, and it's not just for me," Port St. Lucie head coach Everette Alford told TCPalm. "All of his best friends are out there on the field, and they're missing him."

A.J. Cavotta will cap a standout golf year with an autumn trip to Florida.
A teaching pro at Anders Mattson Golf in Saratoga Springs, Cavotta grabbed Northeastern New York's PGA berth into the 50th **** istant PGA Professional Championship, shooting a 3-under-par 139 over 36 holes Monday at Mohawk to win the section's **** istants Championship.
Cavotta, 24, the 2019 Times Union boys' golf Athlete of the Year from Saratoga Springs, was in a three-way tie with Nolan Crowley, who also works at Mattson's studio, and Nick Frankl of Albany. A bogey-free second round of 5-under 66 gave Cavotta a five-stroke victory over Crowley, the 2018 TU boys' golf Athlete of the Year who also played at Saratoga.
The victory punched Cavotta's ticket to Port St. Lucie, Fla., where the Wanamaker Course at the PGA Golf Club will play host to the national **** istants championship Nov. 12-15, and adds to a 2026 season in which he:
• earned $40,000 by winning the Next Golf Tour Championship, a worldwide circuit played on golf simulators (February)
• finished fourth in the Massachusetts Open, taking home $4,500 (June)

Are the Yankees headed for a reunion with Clay Holmes?
The Yankees were one of several teams scouting the Mets pitcher in his rehab start for Single-A St. Lucie on Tuesday night, according to The Athletic.
According to two executives who watched his latest rehab appearance on Tuesday night, Mets starter and trade candidate Clay Holmes "looked big-league ready."
Scouts from the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Tampa Bay Rays, Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks were among those who flocked to Dunedin, Fla., to evaluate Holmes, out since mid-May after a fibula fracture.
Pitching for Single-A St. Lucie, Holmes threw four scoreless innings and 59 pitches. His next start lines up for Aug. 2, one day before the trade deadline. It's not known whether that start will be for the Mets or someone else.

Clay Holmes pitched to a batter in the batter's box Friday afternoon, the first time he saw a hitter since Spencer Jones broke his leg with a line drive in May.
The batter in the box was Marcus Semien, who is also out with injury. He did not swing at a single pitch. But through two innings' worth of pitches with a break in between, Holmes was finally on the Citi Field mound again, a signal that he is moving nearer to returning from the injured list. What is not clear as of Friday is whether he will still be a Met when he does.
Holmes told The Athletic this week that he is open to an extension, and a person familiar with the front office's thinking told SNY the Mets are open to an extension with him, too. Neither Holmes' agent nor president of baseball operations David Stearns immediately responded to inquiries about whether the two sides have had any conversations about a deal. If they are going to complete one, they should probably do so soon.
Because even though Holmes is not yet close to pitching in games – he said Friday he will likely face actual swinging batters in his next outing, and that it might have to come in Port St. Lucie because the major league staff will be off during the All-Star Break – he is one of the Mets' more appealing trade deadline ******* ets.
With an expiring contract, a strong start to the season, and a relatively fresh arm given the injury, Holmes would be an appealing top-end starter for any contending team. He could likely bring the Mets a worthwhile return, even as a rental who might not be fully built up by the deadline itself. The Blue Jays sent a top pitching prospect to the Guardians for Shane Bieber last year, even though he was not going to be healthy until late August. Top-end starting pitching is coveted in all its forms.

C.H. Robinson has been dismissed as a defendant in a Florida case that might have been one of the first tests of broker liability in a legal arena changed by Montgomery vs. Caribe Transport II.
A court document filed Friday afternoon in the 19th Circuit Court for St. Lucie County, in the widely-publicized case involving driver Harjinder Singh and his fatal u-turn behind the wheel, removed C.H. Robinson as a defendant in the lawsuit brought by the estate of Faniola Joseph, killed in the crash along with two others that occurred after Singh's tragic turn.
Reiterates: we weren't part of this
The document doesn't say why C.H. Robinson (NASDAQ: CHRW) was dismissed as a defendant. But in a prepared statement, the giant 3PL said the same thing Tuesday as it did when the lawsuit from Joseph's estate was first filed: it had nothing to do with any of the companies involved in the crash.
"The lawsuit in Cantelar v. White Hawk Carriers incorrectly alleged that C.H. Robinson brokered the shipment involved in the accident," the company said in a prepared statement provided to FreightWaves. "That was false, which is why C.H. Robinson has been dismissed from the case." (Yaniel Cantelar represents the Joseph estate).
