James "Bear" Ordonez completed his first 10 passes in his debut, throwing five touchdowns in the first half as Frenship led 34-10. He finished 17 of 22 for 281 yards and no interceptions.
"He and I had a lot of conversations about the old frying pan," Tigers coach Jay Northcutt said, alluding to his metaphor of an inexperienced QB's struggles. "I know it'll come at some point. A lot of times it is the first game, but he seemed to have dodged it. Just a good performance by him and his teammates as well."

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Well-traveled quarterback Tommy Castellanos plans to play this season for No. 12 Texas Tech, the Big 12 favorite that is set for returner Will Hammond to be its starter after transfer Brendan Sorsby was declared ineligible this summer because of gambling.
Castellanos told ESPN on Wednesday he had committed to the Red Raiders. On the quarterback's verified X account, in which the bio included the phrase professional athlete, there was a photo posted later in the day with him in a Texas Tech uniform.
The decision came after Castellanos last Friday was among 10 athletes granted a temporary restraining order by a Kentucky judge to get a fifth season of college football. The NCAA announced a rule change in June allowing players who began college in 2023 or later to have five years to play five years of sports in college.
Castellanos, a freshman at UCF in 2022, went undrafted by the NFL four months ago before a tryout as a receiver with the Miami Dolphins during their rookie minicamp.
He had declared for the NFL draft last December after dropping his appeal for another year of college eligibility. The NCAA had denied his waiver request to play another season at Florida State

One of the fun things about basketball in the Triangle is that there are three teams that all woof at each other. The common element is that Duke and NC State historically hate UNC, while Carolina hates Duke and likes to condescend to State fans as if they're the infamous little brother.

Like most players this past spring who ******* umed their eligibility was up, Williams had made other plans. He entered the NBA Draft but was not selected. When the recent court decision came down that gave all members of the class of 2022 a fifth year, Williams took advantage and returned to Lubbock, which makes sense.
Why would he have stayed with the Wolfpack? The team he was recruited to is scattered to the winds. The coach who brought him to Raleigh is gone. There isn't anything holding him there.

exas Tech and Colorado may be headed for another Big 12 fight, but the softest moment this week came off the field. Deion Sanders Jr. publicly thanked Joey McGuire for a gesture that stretched back years, long before the Texas Tech coach signed his $51.9 million extension.
"From Cedar Hill to Texas Tech – it's a beautiful thing!" Deion Sanders Jr. posted on X, tagging Joey McGuire. "I asked Coach for help expanding; he told me I could come record at Texas Tech during spring workouts and etc… I never got around to it, but thank you for always looking out for me since I was 14."
Joey McGuire wasn't simply another coach offering a favor to Deion Sanders' oldest son. He has known the Sanders family for well over a decade. Before he arrived in Lubbock, the 54-year-old coach built Cedar Hill High School into one of Texas's powerhouse football programs during a remarkable 14-year run that produced three state championships.
During that stretch, Joey McGuire coached Deion Sanders Jr. as a freshman in 2009 before he transferred schools. The football partnership lasted only one season, but the relationship never disappeared. Today, Bucky is best known as the driving force behind Well Off Media, the behind-the-scenes platform that has become almost inseparable from the Sanders family brand.
It started as a YouTube channel where Deion Sanders Jr. filmed everyday life around his family. Now it's much bigger than that. Well Off Media has grown into a major name in college football content. A new era has arrived in Lubbock, as the home of Texas Tech football officially has a new name.
On Friday, Texas Tech Athletics announced a new naming rights agreement for its football stadium, which will now be known as Galaxy Stadium as part of a long-term partnership with Galaxy.
Although financial terms were not disclosed in the official announcement, Sports Business Journal reported the deal is worth around $75 million. The ****** ociated Press reported that the partnership "will also include NIL opportunities for Texas Tech student-athletes."
The change marks the first time in the venue's 78-year history that it will not carry the Jones name. The stadium was known as Clifford B. & Audrey Jones Stadium from its opening in 1947 until 2000, when it became Jones SBC Stadium before being renamed Jones AT&T Stadium in 2006. The stadium was named in honor of former Texas Tech president Clifford B. Jones and his wife, Audrey, whose joint donation helped fund its construction.

College football talking season got going last week at The Star in Frisco, Texas, as Big 12 Media Days transpired.
One of the higher rated draft prospects in attendance was AJ Holmes, DT, Texas Tech. The Big 12's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, Holmes played alongside three position group mates last season in Lubbock who were selected during the early rounds of this past April's draft.
Edge rusher David Bailey was the second overall pick by the New York Jets. Nose tackle Lee Hunter was a second-round pick, 49th overall, to the Carolina Panthers.
And then finally, defensive end Romello Height was the 70th overall pick, getting selected in the third-round by the San Francisco 49ers.
Holmes is up next, in 2027, as his current projection is early-to-mid second round.

Harrisburg (Pa.) Bishop McDevitt tight end prospect Zayden Smith tells Rivals he has committed to Texas Tech.
The 6-foot-5, 205-pound Smith is currently in Lubbock for his official visit and chose to play for head coach Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders over Penn State among others.
“When I came down here for the unofficial visit I liked the area and how well the coaches invited me in and how friendly they are and hospitality and everything I felt it was the right place for me,” Smith said.
“Coach McGuire, I think he’s a really cool guy. Really friendly. I think he’s a good coach, leading them to a Big 12 championship last year.”
Over the last two seasons Smith turned 56 receptions into 810 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also has 67 tackles and four interceptions.

Brendan Sorsby has dropped his lawsuit against the NCAA, making the quarterback ineligible again and ending his college career because of gambling.
The expected motion for dismissal of the suit was filed Thursday by the 99th District Court in Lubbock County. That was three days after Texas Tech said he wouldn’t play this fall, and exactly a month after Sorsby filed his lawsuit that set off a legal saga that rattled college sports.
That Texas court issued a temporary injunction June 8 that made the transfer quarterback eligible to play even after admitting that he placed bets on his own team while at Indiana as a freshman four years ago. Those were among thousands of impermissible bets he made while in college.
Sorsby had to be ineligible for NCAA play to be able to apply for the NFL’s supplemental draft. The submission deadline for that rarely used draft is Monday, and the 22-year-old quarterback tentatively plans to work out for NFL teams on July 10.
The injunction last week by Judge Ken Curry had prevented the NCAA from enforcing its ruling that the quarterback was ineligible to play what would have been his final college season. Sorsby transferred to reigning Big 12 champion Texas Tech in January after the past two seasons at Cincinnati.

No football program in the country has been under the spotlight more this offseason than Texas Tech. The Red Raiders have a little bit of closure with the Brendan Sorsby saga and are moving on to build the best roster they can for the future.
The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reports that the school has received a 2027 commitment from Hunter Haug, a four-star safety who is playing his high school football for Smithson Valley in-state.
It's be interesting to see how the Red Raiders and head coach Joey McGuire use Haug once he gets to campus after his high school career ends. He posted 57 tackles and two forced fumbles as a defensive back, but has also been a weapon on offense.
Haug recorded 1,156 yards and 16 touchdowns on offense for Smithson Valley in 2025.

Sorsby plans to hold his pro day July 10 at a Dallas-area high school, a person familiar with the situation told The ****** ociated Press on Wednesday. That person spoke on condition of anonymity because the process for conducting the supplemental draft wasn't complete.
The deadline for applying for the draft is Monday, but there were still procedural issues related to a Texas district court's temporary injunction that had cleared the way for him to play for Texas Tech this fall.
Sorsby, who is from the Dallas area, would have to be ineligible from NCAA play to be able to apply for the NFL's supplemental draft. That rarely used draft would be completed at least a week before the start of the first training camp in late July.
The temporary injunction issued June 8 by a Lubbock County court prevented the NCAA from blocking the quarterback's eligibility for what would have been his final college season. That would have to be dropped to make him ineligible again.

The Texas Tech quarterback was recently granted an injunction that allowed him to play in 2026 after a two-game suspension, but the NFL Network reported Monday night that Sorsby would petition the NFL to turn pro.
Sorsby had been declared ineligible by the NCAA after placing thousands of sports bets while playing college football and placed bets on Indiana while he was a redshirt freshman member of the Hoosiers’ football team. He recently completed an inpatient treatment program for a gambling addiction and his addiction had been cited as the mental health basis for Sorsby to maintain his eligibility when he filed for the injunction.
When that injunction was granted by a Lubbock County (Texas) judge, there was a mass revolt across college sports. That included in the Big 12, where the pushback turned political. After Texas attorney general Ken Paxton said that he’d be prepared to fight for Texas Tech if it was sanctioned by the conference, the Big 12 filed a complaint against the school and Paxton on Monday afternoon.
Hours later, Sorsby was exploring his supplemental draft options.

The Brendan Sorsby drama has been one of the main tunes floating around college football’s airwaves in recent weeks. Despite past gambling violations that were cited against Sorsby by the NCAA, which ruled Sorsby ineligible to play in 2026 with Texas Tech, a Lubbock judge recently granted Texas Tech’s signal-caller a temporary injunction against the ruling.
What comes next, according to Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian?
Per his sense of humor noted in Sports Illustrated, Sarkisian said, “[Given] the way these injunctions are going, Pat Mahomes might be playing quarterback for Texas Tech again before [Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire is] done.”

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT THE LONGHORNS

Colorado's athletic director, Fernando Lovo, condemned the ruling that would allow Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby to play this season in a statement issued Monday night.
Lovo, who was hired by Colorado last winter, called the injunction a "clear affront to the competitive principles" of college sports and said the school would be working with the Big 12 Conference and its fellow Big 12 peers on the issue. The Buffs are set to host the Red Raiders on Oct. 3 at Folsom Field for Colorado's homecoming game.
Lovo did not mention the game's future in his statement. A report by Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger states that Big 12 athletic directors were considering not playing Texas Tech in any sport.
"The injunction issued today regarding Brendan Sorsby is doubling as his admitted actions are a clear violation of long-held standards of integrity in college athletics," Lovo said in his statement.
Sorsby admitted to gambling on his own team during his time at Indiana, but was made eligible by a ruling by Lubbock County Judge Ken Curry, who granted the quarterback an injunction against the NCAA. Sorsby played at Cincinnati last year and was one of Texas Tech's most significant additions in the transfer portal this offseason.

The ever-changing landscape of college athletics continues to get altered by legal rulings, and the latest one has a chance to directly impact Arizona teams’ upcoming schedules.
A judge in Texas ruled Monday that Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby can play this season despite being caught betting on college football, including on his own team when he was a freshman at Indiana. Sorsby, who transferred from Cincinnati in the winter, had been banned by the NCAA for his sports betting but Judge Ken Curry of Texas’ 99th District Court issued a temporary injunction.
Curry, a Texas Tech graduate whose courtroom is in Lubbock, ruled that Sorsby would “suffer a probable, imminent and irreparable injury” if not allowed to play for the Red Raiders, who reportedly are paying him $5 million for the 2026 season.
The NCAA has filed an “accelerated appeal,” according to The Athletic, with the Court of Appeals for the Seventh District of Texas. All four judges on that panel graduated from Texas Tech.
In the immediate fallout after the judge’s ruling, some schools—Georgia and Nebraska—have publicly announced they won’t schedule Tech for future games. But that might just be the start of a boycott.

In a statement, the NCAA said it strongly disagrees with the court’s ruling and “is deeply concerned about the damaging, far-reaching and broadly destabilizing ramifications of this outcome — which undermines and corrupts the integrity of sports.”
