Major League Baseball's trade deadline always focuses on the loudest teams and the loudest names. Tampa Bay missed on Tarik Skubal and pivoted to Freddy Peralta instead. A month later, that consolation prize is beginning to look suspiciously like exactly what the Rays needed.

Peralta wasn't good in New York.
He carried a 4.99 ERA and 1.48 WHIP across 113 2/3 innings before the Mets dealt him to Tampa Bay on August 2 for three prospects – Aidan Smith, Gary Gill Hill and Émilien Pitre. All three ranked among Tampa Bay's Top 30 prospects.

For many companies, timing their biggest product launches right before earnings is no accident. Two days ahead of its fiscal third report, Broadcom Inc. (AVGO) used a conference in Las Vegas, an event most investors ignore, to unveil a sweeping AI governance platform.
The timing matters less than what the announcement reveals about a bet Broadcom has already made with its balance sheet.
That conference was VMware Explore 2026 in Las Vegas. Broadcom has run the VMware business since its $69 billion acquisition closed in 2023, and it has mostly used the platform to sell software bundles to existing enterprise customers. This week, the pitch changed.
Broadcom introduced VMware Private AI Cloud, a platform meant to let companies run AI inference and autonomous software agents inside their own data centers instead of renting capacity from a public cloud provider, according to a Broadcom press release.
That distinction is important. Most of the AI infrastructure story so far has centered on hyperscalers building bigger data centers and chip suppliers financing that buildout.

Revenue growth of approximately 1,970% in H1 2026 was driven by the rapid expansion of the customer base to over 1,640 enterprise clients.
The company is pivoting from a conventional direct sales model to a partner-led distribution strategy leveraging Microsoft, Google, TCS, and Tech Mahindra to access global enterprise markets.
Management attributes the successful scaling to their 'Agentic' commerce suite, which provides the data, intelligence, and payment rails required for AI agents to execute transactions.
The selection of Rezolve's distributed database technology by Google Cloud validates the company's strategy to license its underlying infrastructure independently of its commerce applications.

The last 52 weeks have been characterized by significant volatility for CrowdStrike (CRWD) stock. CRWD stock touched lows of $85.68 in February 2026, with disruption risk from AI-native start-ups even as artificial intelligence boosted the outlook for the cybersecurity industry.
It, however, didn't take time for the narrative to change with the company's Falcon platform positioning itself as a one-stop shop for an array of security solutions (including cybersecurity for the cloud and artificial intelligence).

The Tennessee ****** ans revoked Jared Stillman's credential. Depending on who you ask, this is either a franchise standing up to a loudmouth who dared them to do it, or an organization delivering a blueprint to other franchises on how to silence local critics.
Teams that travel this path usually end up with more negative coverage. You can't deliver a 6 and 28 record over two seasons, change your front office and coaching staff, and then complain about unfavorable attention. Winning changes the local conversation.
I went through this in St. Louis with the Rams and in the Bay Area with the Raiders. Kevin Demoff, Amy Trask and Marc Badain were all fantastic. All knew their results shaped the local coverage. Win games and people are happy. Lose games and fire people, and criticisms follow. It's that simple.
Stillman is a longtime Nashville radio host. He broadcasts now on YouTube, and recently went viral after a testy exchange with quarterback Cam Ward. On his show the next day, he said the ****** ans wouldn't be foolish enough to pull his credential over it. He felt the backlash would be brutal and make them look like the softest organization in the NFL.
A day later, they did it anyway.

A laptop arrived late. What was on it made things worse. And now Apple is asking a federal court to move faster, arguing that evidence in its lawsuit against OpenAI is being actively destroyed.
Apple filed a new brief on Aug. 31, escalating its legal battle against the ChatGPT maker. The filing accuses OpenAI of withholding key evidence and alleges that a former Apple engineer sent instructions to an OpenAI colleague to destroy documents. The colleague confirmed she would comply, Bloomberg reported.
The brief was filed Monday, Aug. 31, in support of Apple's motion for expedited pretrial fact-finding in its trade secrets lawsuit against OpenAI.
Apple's lawyers said OpenAI only recently provided a critical piece of evidence: an Apple-issued MacBook that former engineer Chang Liu had been using since leaving the company.
Initial forensic ***** ysis of the laptop found that Liu and colleagues at OpenAI "were well aware" of his continued unauthorized access to Apple's third-party cloud storage providers. The filing alleges Liu also "sent instructions for destroying evidence to an OpenAI colleague who confirmed she would comply."

Nvidia (NVDA) recently got another massive vote of confidence from one of the world's biggest cloud companies. Last week, Amazon Web Services, the cloud computing unit of Amazon (AMZN), announced it will deploy two million additional Nvidia GPUs across its global network over the next two years.
The move builds on a partnership that already spans 16 years. For investors watching NVDA stock, it signals that demand for AI chips continues to climb, driven by higher capital expenditures.

Roddy Gayle Jr. has been granted a temporary restraining order by a New York judge in his lawsuit against the NCAA in which he's seeking a fifth year of eligibility.
The decision makes Gayle, a 6-foot-5 guard who spent the past two seasons at Michigan, eligible to practice with the Wolverines ahead of his preliminary injunction hearing, which is set for Sept. 17 at 2 p.m.
The TRO was issued by Judge Frank A. Sedita III on Wednesday, Sept. 2, two days after Gayle filed the lawsuit against the NCAA in Niagara County Supreme Court seeking a preliminary injunction that would make him eligible for the 2026-27 season.
Gayle is among a number of high school class of 2022 athletes who are suing the NCAA for an additional year of eligibility, on the basis they are barred from the ***** ociation's new age-based eligibility model.
According to the suit filed on Aug. 31, Michigan has offered Gayle a roster spot for this season, though it's "an opportunity conditioned solely on his NCAA eligibility," and he's been practicing with the team "while that eligibility remains clouded," including during the Wolverines' recent foreign exhibition tour to Lithuania and Croatia.

Hotchkis & Wiley, an investment management company, released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter for the "Large Cap Fundamental Value Fund." A copy can be downloaded here. Equity markets posted strong returns, with the Russell 1000 Value Index rising by 13.9%, although many individual stocks lagged. Notably, semiconductor stocks and AI-related sectors saw exceptional gains. The rally appeared speculative, marked by a stark difference in performance between high-beta and low-volatility stocks, along with momentum stocks outperforming the market significantly. Despite heightened enthusiasm for AI investments, concerns arise over inflated valuations reminiscent of the dot-com era. While there is substantial capital investment in AI, future earnings growth must justify these expenditures. The fund maintains a cautious approach towards perceived beneficiaries of AI, suggesting that select high-quality businesses with reasonable valuations may be better positioned. Historical trends suggest that speculative markets often revert to valuations based on fundamental economic realities, and the chosen investments are believed to be well-prepared for such a shift. The fund underperformed the index in the quarter and returned 5.69% vs. 13.87% for the Russell 1000 Value Index, largely due to a lack of exposure to high-performing sectors like semiconductors, while stock selection in healthcare provided a positive contribution. Also, check the fund's top five holdings to see its best picks in 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Hotchkis & Wiley Large Cap Fundamental Value Fund highlighted F5, Inc. (NASDAQ:FFIV) as one of its leading individual contributors. F5, Inc. (NASDAQ:FFIV) offers multi-cloud application security and delivery solutions. On August 31, 2026, F5, Inc. (NASDAQ:FFIV) closed at $407.13 per share. Over the past month, F5, Inc. (NASDAQ:FFIV) declined 3.41%, while its shares are up 29.82% over the past year. F5, Inc. (NASDAQ:FFIV) has a market capitalization of $23.05 billion, and its stock has traded within a 52-week range of $223.76 to $435.00.
Hotchkis & Wiley Large Cap Fundamental Value Fund stated the following regarding F5, Inc. (NASDAQ:FFIV) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"F5, Inc. (NASDAQ:FFIV) sells application networking and security software as well as data center appliances. The company's stock rose after it posted good quarterly results and raised both its revenue and EPS guidance. The company is misunderstood and gets incorrectly classified as a legacy IT hardware vendor, resulting in an attractive valuation for a company with better-than-average fundamental risk ratings.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Hotchkis & Wiley Large Cap Fundamental Value Fund highlighted Workday, Inc. (NASDAQ:WDAY). Workday, Inc. On August 31, 2026, Workday, Inc. (NASDAQ:WDAY) closed at $197.45 per share. Over the past month, Workday, Inc. (NASDAQ:WDAY) returned 15.87%, but its shares are down 13.29% over the past year. Workday, Inc. (NASDAQ:WDAY) has a market capitalization of $47.59 billion.
Hotchkis & Wiley Large Cap Fundamental Value Fund stated the following regarding Workday, Inc. (NASDAQ:WDAY) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
Workday, Inc. (NASDAQ:WDAY) is a leader in cloud software for back-office business functions, spanning human capital management (HCM), financial management, and adjacent ERP (enterprise resource planning) products, with 60% of the Fortune 500 as HCM customers. Shares declined over the period, pressured by investor concerns that AI could disrupt application software vendors. The most recent quarter, however, did not show evidence of this. The Summers Value Fund stated the following regarding Consensus Cloud Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ:CCSI) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
Consensus Cloud Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ:CCSI) - $695 million market cap. Consensus Cloud Solutions is a leading provider of cloud-based fax services to the healthcare sector under its well-recognized eFax brand. Faxing remains an important means of communication in the healthcare ecosystem with billions of pages sent each year. Faxing, while a legacy technology, allows industry participants to communicate in a HIPAA-compliant manner. Baron Capital, an investment management company, released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter for its "Baron Fifth Avenue Growth Fund". The letter can be downloaded here. The fund achieved a strong quarter, gaining 24.6% (Institutional Shares), outperforming the Russell 1000 Growth Index (16.7%) and the S&P 500 (15.2%). Year to date, it's up 11.7%, surpassing its benchmarks. The first half of 2026 mirrored the previous year, with a 10.4% drawdown in Q1 due to geopolitical tensions, similar to last year's tariff-related decline. However, the fund rebounded with a 24.6% gain in Q2 after a cease-fire and declining oil prices. Stock selection drove the outperformance, contributing 940bps, while sector allocation detracted 152bps. In a volatile market, the firm remains focused on identifying high-quality, competitively advantaged companies and is optimistic about long-term prospects, investing when prices align with intrinsic values. Also, check the fund's top five holdings to see its best picks in 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Baron Fifth Avenue Growth Fund highlighted Shopify Inc. (NASDAQ:SHOP). Shopify Inc. (NASDAQ:SHOP), a Canada-based e-commerce technology company that provides a cloud-based platform for individuals and companies to create and manage their operations, detracted from performance in the quarter. On August 31, 2026, Shopify Inc. (NASDAQ:SHOP) closed at $147.37 per share. Over the past month, Shopify Inc. (NASDAQ:SHOP) returned 19.52%, but its shares are up 5.99% over the past year. Shopify Inc. (NASDAQ:SHOP) has a market capitalization of $189.59 billion, and its stock has traded within a 52-week range of $94.00 to $182.19.
Baron Fifth Avenue Growth Fund stated the following regarding Shopify Inc. (NASDAQ:SHOP) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"Shopify Inc. (NASDAQ:SHOP), a leading global commerce platform serving merchants across online and offline channels, detracted from performance in the second quarter with the stock down 3.7%. The decline was driven by multiple compression (its P/E was down 8.5%11) rather than any deterioration in the underlying business or fundamental outlook. Shopify continued to post healthy growth in gross merchandise volume and revenue, which were up 30% and 32% year-on-year, respectively. Instead, the pressure reflected investor concerns about the company's long-term positioning in a future state of e-commerce that may rely more heavily on AI-driven applications than traditional websites. We view those concerns as misplaced and see Shopify as an AI winner. Two decades of proprietary data across millions of merchants provide Shopify with a strong foundation for AI tools that improve merchant outcomes. Recent product releases also embed the platform more deeply within the emerging agentic commerce ecosystem while creating new monetization opportunities. We continue to believe that Shopify is the category-defining platform for modern commerce, benefiting from durable secular growth

Riverwater Partners, an investment management company, released its 'Small Cap Strategy' Q2 2026 investor letter. The letter can be downloaded here. The Small Cap Strategy underperformed the Russell 2000 in the second quarter as the benchmark experienced one of its strongest risk-on rallies in recent memory, although the strategy remained ahead year-to-date. The quarter was defined by accelerating AI investment, energy market disruptions, and renewed investor appetite for higher-beta stocks, creating headwinds for the firm's quality-focused approach and healthcare positioning. Despite this, stock selection contributed positively in energy, materials, and financials, while healthcare and consumer discretionary detracted due to the fund's disciplined avoidance of speculative businesses. Looking ahead, the firm remains cautiously optimistic, focusing on opportunities created by market dislocations, including AI infrastructure enablers, select consumer companies, healthcare innovators, and energy businesses trading below intrinsic value. The strategy continues to emphasize high-quality companies with strong management teams and attractive valuations, positioning the portfolio for a potential rotation away from speculative market leadership. In addition, please check the Strategy's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.

ESPN'S Jeff Passan made a humorous reference on social media Sept. 2, quoting a Milwaukee Brewers post that showed Christian Yelich's go-ahead home run in his team's 9-4 win over the Cubs one night earlier.
"Can I ask, by the way, how people in Chicago felt about their home game turning into a road game?" Passan wrote. "That can't happen."
Indeed, Brewers fans were pretty loud as Yelich circled the bases in the top of the sixth, though Passan's sentiment has some added history.

Passan caught a little bit of local flak for those same words directed at Brewers fans at the end of June, part of an interview with "Wilde & Tausch" on ESPN Milwaukee.

Hotchkis & Wiley, an investment management company, released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter for the "Global Value Fund." The letter can be downloaded here. In Q2 2026, the MSCI World Index rose by +13.8% and the MSCI World Value Index by +9.2%, despite challenges like rising inflation and the Iran conflict. The US now comprises about 71% of the MSCI World Index, with notable gains in semiconductor and AI-related stocks, some exceeding 100%. The market showed speculative behavior, especially with high-beta and momentum stocks outperforming significantly. While enthusiasm for AI drove investor leverage, many stocks are trading at elevated multiples reminiscent of the dot-com era. Concerns about sustainability arise as earnings growth is heavily tied to AI data centers. Preference is shifting to high-quality businesses in sectors like enterprise software and healthcare, which are perceived as more stable. Defensive sectors have been underinvested, offering potential opportunities. The fund achieved a return of 9.97% in the quarter, surpassing the MSCI World Value Index, with healthcare as a key contributor. Also, check the fund's top five holdings to see its best picks in 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Hotchkis & Wiley Global Value Fund noted that Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) detracted from performance due to its underweight position in the stock. Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL), the parent company of Google, offers various platforms and services, including online search and advertising, cloud solutions, and artificial intelligence. On September 1, 2026, Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) closed at $335.02 per share. Over the past month, Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) declined 7.56%, but its shares are up 45.24% over the past year. Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) has a market capitalization of $4.09 trillion.
Hotchkis & Wiley Global Value Fund stated the following regarding Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is a holding company whose primary subsidiary is Google, whose Search business makes it one of the largest advertising companies in the world. Alphabet's other businesses are its enterprise cloud platform and venture-stage companies collectively reported as "Other Bets." We believe Alphabet's valuation remain good given its improving growth prospects. Although the stock rose during the quarter, it detracted from relative performance because we were underweight compared to the benchmark. Our investment thesis remains intact."

Tiger Global Management made a dramatic-looking second-quarter rotation within AI. Its August 14 filing showed the fund cutting Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) by 45.4%, from 10.63 million shares to 5.81 million, while opening a position in Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD). The trade shifts some exposure from a giant platform funding AI infrastructure to a chip supplier seeking share within it. Yet Alphabet remained a large holding, so this is better understood as rebalancing than abandonment.
A financial ****** yst presenting a chart of insurance solutions to a boardroom.
Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) still has a formidable bull case. Google Cloud grew 82%, and the company can distribute AI across search, advertising, productivity software, and enterprise services. Its models, custom chips, data, and global user base create several paths to returns. The bear case is the cost and uncertainty of defending those businesses. Capital spending is surging while AI answers may alter search economics and regulators challenge the platform's advantages.
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) provides a more focused route to the same demand. Its second-quarter revenue rose 50%, with data-center revenue up 107%, as Instinct accelerators and EPYC processors gained momentum. If hyperscalers insist on multiple suppliers, AMD can grow faster than total AI spending. It also faces the harder competitive task: Nvidia's software ecosystem remains dominant, and customers developing internal chips can limit the merchant opportunity.
The filing changes the composition of Tiger's reported positions, but it does not disclose why the fund made either move. Alphabet owns demand and distribution but must prove huge investments strengthen its core economics. AMD sells into that investment wave but must win deployments against powerful alternatives. One can benefit from lower chip prices while the other needs sufficient pricing and share. Holding both, even at different weights, captures the expansion while acknowledging that value may migrate across the stack. The next confirmation should come from cloud margins and accelerator deployment growth rather than portfolio symbolism.

Billionaire Philippe Laffont made two of Coatue Management's most revealing second-quarter moves at opposite ends of the AI supply chain. The fund increased its Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MU) position by 1,794% to 3.14 million shares and expanded its Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) stake 49% to 11.83 million shares. Micron sells the high-bandwidth memory AI systems consume; Amazon turns those systems into cloud services. The paired positions give Coatue exposure to both the component bottleneck and the infrastructure owner, although the filing does not disclose Laffont's rationale.
Source: Micron Technology
Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MU) has direct exposure to scarcity. Its record fiscal third-quarter results reflected surging HBM demand, and every new accelerator requires large amounts of advanced memory. Tight supply and higher-value products can lift margins dramatically. The danger is that memory remains cyclical, although the traditional boom-and-bust framework may be getting outdated. See why here.
Micron plans more than $25 billion of capital spending, and competitors responding to shortages could eventually weaken pricing just as new factories become expensive to operate.
Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) provides a more diversified route. AWS revenue grew 36.7% in the second quarter, and Amazon can monetize computing, storage, networking, models, and its own chips. That breadth reduces dependence on any single hardware cycle. It also requires roughly $220 billion of capital spending, however, creating a high return threshold. If customers optimize workloads or AI revenue develops more slowly than capacity, depreciation can outrun utilization.

Microsoft's next major AI constraint may be measured in turbines rather than processors. On June 22, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) entered a 20-year power purchase agreement with Energy Forge One LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX), for a planned West Texas data-center project. The Kilby development targets 2.67 gigawatts of generation, with initial power expected in 2028. Its scale suggests that securing dependable electricity is becoming as strategic to hyperscalers as securing accelerators.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) gets a dedicated path to capacity in a grid-constrained market. Natural gas can provide round-the-clock generation that complements intermittent renewables and supports the reliability AI clusters require. A two-decade contract can also give developers confidence to finance construction. The bull case is simple: Microsoft protects its cloud growth by solving power locally instead of waiting years for transmission expansion.
Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) gains a new outlet for its gas and an opportunity to move downstream into integrated power. If Kilby works, Chevron can replicate a model that converts energy resources and project expertise into long-duration data-center cash flows. Yet the project has not reached a final investment decision. Construction, permitting, fuel costs, emissions rules, and customer requirements can all change the economics before power begins flowing.
Those uncertainties create bear cases for both companies. Microsoft is committing to an energy pathway as AI hardware and efficiency evolve rapidly, and a long contract can become less attractive if power markets change. Chevron and its partners must commit capital years before the **** et is operational while managing construction, fuel-cost and carbon-policy risks. Gas solves the reliability problem, but it may intensify political and regulatory scrutiny around AI's environmental footprint. The critical milestones are final investment approval, permitting, construction costs, and data showing that the first power date remains achievable. Until those arrive, the agreement secures intent rather than operating supply.

Initial forensic ****** ysis of the laptop found that Liu and colleagues at OpenAI "were well aware" of his continued unauthorized access to Apple's third-party cloud storage providers. The filing alleges Liu also "sent instructions for destroying evidence to an OpenAI colleague who confirmed she would comply."

Snowflake is due to report earnings Wednesday afternoon, with the cloud database software provider's stock seen swinging up to 10.5% in either direction by the end of the week.
Wall Street **** ysts expect another solid quarter of growth from Snowflake.
Snowflake is set to report its latest quarterly results after the closing bell on Wednesday, with the cloud database software provider's stock seen potentially rising to a fresh five-year high following the results.
Based on current options pricing, Snowflake (SNOW) shares are expected to swing up to 10.5% in either direction by the end of the week. A move of that size from Monday's close could lift the stock to $361, which would be its highest point since late 2021, or drag it below $297, giving back some of its recent gains.
Snowflake shares have added about half of their value since the start of the year as investors have bought into the company's AI vision. Back in May, shares rallied more than 35% in a single session following stronger-than-expected results, a raised outlook, and $6 billion deal with Amazon (AMZN).
