Switzerland's Audrey Werro clocked a meet best to win the 800m on home soil at the Lausanne Diamond League on Friday, but fell well short of the world record.
The newly-crowned European champion, the third fastest ever in the women's two-lap race, is aiming to break the 1min 53.28sec run by Jarmila Kratochvilova of then-Czechoslovakia in 1983.
It remains the oldest world record in track and field, albeit one that is highly contested having come during a period when systemic doping of athletes was prevalent. Kratochvilova, however, never failed a doping test.
Unlike the European champs, the Diamond League features wavelight technology, trackside lighting that enables runners to see at what pace they are running.
Werro also had Myrte van der Schoot as her pacemaker, but depite the Dutchwoman clocking an electric 54.64sec for the opening 400m, the 22-year-old Swiss could not maintain the pace, ultimately winning in a meet record of 1:55.33.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — South African cyclist S'annara Grove has been provisionally suspended because of a failed doping test, the International Testing Agency said Friday.
Grove's sample collected on July 28 at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow returned an "adverse ****** ytical finding" for ipamorelin, the ITA said.
Ipamorelin, prohibited in and out of competition, "is a synthetic peptide used to stimulate the body's natural production of growth hormone," the testing agency said.
The ITA said Grove, who didn't medal in her track cycling events at the Commonwealth Games, has been informed of the case and has the right to challenge the provisional suspension.
The 32-year-old Grove rides professionally for the Smurfit Westrock team and is listed as a competitor in the current Tour of Britain. The third stage of the race was Friday.

On August 6, 10x Genomics (NASDAQ:TXG) reported second-quarter revenue of $151 million, boosted by a $1.6 million settlement payment from Takara. Strip that out and revenue grew just 3% year-over-year to $149.4 million, a modest number next to the real headline of the quarter: a brand-new instrument platform called Atera, where booked orders have exceeded full-year planned shipments.
By the end of the second quarter, booked orders for Atera already exceeded the roughly 40 units 10x had planned to ship for all of 2026. Demand also showed up in Catalyst Research Services, the program that lets customers run samples on Atera in 10x's own lab before committing to buy a unit. Away from Atera, the existing consumables business kept growing, up 7% overall, with spatial consumables climbing 16% on continued strength in the Xenium platform. During the quarter, 10x acquired Proteintech Genomics, adding single-cell protein panels that management says will let Atera measure proteins alongside gene expression from the same cell.
The balance sheet backed up the story. Cash and marketable securities rose to $552 million, up $105 million from a year earlier, and gross margin expanded to 74% from 72%. Management raised full-year revenue guidance to a range of $610 million to $630 million. New research partnerships with Cleveland Clinic and Lausanne University Hospital, aimed at finding biomarkers of treatment response in oncology, point to where 10x hopes this technology eventually leads: clinical diagnostics.
The flip side of Atera's launch showed up in the instrument line. Total instrument revenue fell 47% year over year, with Chromium instruments down 46% and spatial instruments down 48%, as customers held off on buying older spatial systems while waiting for the new platform. Management expects that pause to continue, guiding for a sequential revenue step down in the third quarter before a bigger jump in the fourth. Even though booked Atera orders already exceed the year's full production plan, 10x kept its shipment target at about 40 units, weighted mostly toward the fourth quarter, a sign the company is still constrained on how fast it can build the machine.
Regionally, APAC revenue fell 19%, partly because customers in China had pulled purchases forward a year earlier ahead of anticipated tariffs. Operating expenses rose to $132.1 million from $95 million, though the comparison is skewed by a $40.7 million patent settlement gain booked in the prior year versus $3.4 million this year.

STRASBOURG, France (AP) — Real Madrid has agreed to transfer center forward Jacobo Ortega to French club Strasbourg, the Spanish team said on Monday.
Madrid didn't provide any details about the deal for the 20-year-old, who scored in the UEFA Youth League final against Club Brugge last season.
After a 1-1 draw, Madrid won the competition — effectively the Champions League for under-19 teams — in a penalty shootout in Lausanne, Switzerland on April 20.
It was the club's second ****** le in the 12-year history of the UEFA youth competition.
Strasbourg said the forward had signed a contract till 2031.

According to sources at FussballTransfers.com, Borussia Mönchengladbach are interested in Karim Sow from FC Lausanne-Sport.
The potential transfer fee for the 23-year-old from the Swiss Super League club is likely in the range of €4 to €5million.
However, the club from the Rhineland not the only club that has taken notice of the towering 1.98-meter-tall defender.
Newly promoted Premier League clubs Ipswich Town and Hull City are also interested in Sow, as well as Racing Strasbourg of Ligue 1.
The Swiss center-back is under contract with Lausanne until 2028 and was a regular starter in the club's defense since last season.

Nearly two years after the Paris Olympics bronze medal dispute between Romania's Ana Barbosu and American gymnast Jordan Chiles, the case is headed back to the CAS. After Switzerland's Federal Supreme Court ordered a fresh hearing, Romania initially faced uncertainty over funding its legal defense. Those concerns have now been resolved after Parliament approved an amendment allowing the COSR to finance the country's representation before CAS.
Following the development, Barbosu shared a message thanking those who made Romania's legal defense possible.
"Thank you very much for the support and efforts made to make it possible to represent the Romanian side before the court in Lausanne. I always remain confident that the state fights for its most trusted ambassadors, the athletes." (Translated from Romanian into English using Google Translate).
Interestingly, the post was issued in the wake of weeks of doubt regarding Romania's participation in the reopened arbitration. In January, the original Court of Arbitration for Sport decision was overturned in part, and the case sent back for a new hearing, due to the new evidence presented by USA Gymnastics determining whether it is possible that Jordan Chiles' score inquiry was submitted within the required one-minute period.
When the case was brought back to CAS in Lausanne, the Romanian Gymnastics Federation estimated that defending Bărbosu's Olympic bronze medal would cost around 250,000 Swiss francs for lawyers, expert opinions, translations, a procedural fee and other legal costs. At that time, COSR stated that it had resources on hand, but under current laws, it was not legally able to use public funds for legal representation in international sports conflicts.

Dutch sprinter Lorena Wiebes held on to a select group over a punchy climb before bolting in the final metres to take the Tour de France Femmes opening stage and first yellow jersey.
Last year's green jersey winner was favourite to win the 85.5-mile out-and-back route from Swiss city Lausanne but was put under serious pressure on a 1.5-mile 4.1% climb just before the finish line.
The 27-year-old Team SD Worx-Protime rider held on to a group of about 20 riders and sprinted away with 200 metres left to win by a bike's length from Mauritius' Kim le Court-Pienaar and Dutch 2023 champion Demi Vollering.
Last year's champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevot, of France, finished in the same group as Wiebes and general classification rival Vollering.
Wiebes' victory was her sixth at the Tour, extending her lead as the rider with the most Tour de France Femmes stage wins since the race's return to the World Tour in 2022.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Lorena Wiebes won the opening stage of the Women's Tour de France on Saturday.
The Dutch cyclist, who represents the SD Worx-Protime team, claimed the flat 137-kilometer (85-mile) ride that started and finished in the city of Lausanne and took the competitors past two lakes locked in the Swiss Alps.
Kim Le Court crossed the finish line second, ahead of Demi Vollering, who has won multiple races this year including the Giro d'Italia.
"I can't believe it," Wiebes said. "The SD Worx-Protime team worked super-hard. Demi attacked, I thought, 'I need to follow'. It was a super-long sprint."
French rider Pauline Ferrand-Prévôt, who won the race last year, finished eighth while Vuelta winner Paula Blasi was 12th.

How do you react when you're told you'll be racing the Tour de France for the first time? For Britain's Zoe Backstedt, "When you get the phone call to say that you've been selected, it's like, OK, don't scream. You can scream after you've put the phone down."
The 21-year-old beams as she recounts the moment on video call with The Independent, a couple of days before her debut at the biggest race on the calendar. An electric first half of the season, including defending her ***** le at the Baloise Ladies Tour, top-five finishes at Dwars door Vlaanderen and Tour of Flanders, and the clean sweep of British national road and time-trial crowns, means the Welshwoman is full of confidence heading to the start line in Lausanne this weekend.
She still hadn't necessarily expected the call-up and was terrified of "jinxing it". "You don't want to say anything or do anything that could potentially make you not selected. It was basically showing that I was good enough at every time trial I've done this season, just giving it 110 per cent, really proving that I'm good enough to go."
Backstedt's prowess against the clock this year, in particular, has been remarkable, with four wins from five ITTs or prologues and her only defeat a second place in the Tour de Suisse time trial, won by none other than the reigning world champion, Marlen Reusser. Backstedt is also the current under-23 world champion in the discipline and will be among the favourites to take a maiden stage win in the Tour's time trial, a 21km run from Gevrey-Chambertin to Dijon on stage four.
She is philosophical about the prospect of pressure on her shoulders, saying: "I'm still young. I've still got years to prove myself as well. For now it's like a focus on everything that you can do, to the best of your ability, really just keeping to myself and trying not to think too much outside of what I need to do on the day. A top 10, a top five, top three, even a win, all of those I think I can still be grateful for and and really be happy with.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Archery world champion Mariana Bernal of Mexico was banned for three years, the International Testing Agency said Thursday, after testing positive for an anabolic steroid three weeks after winning a team gold medal against the U.S.
The 23-year-old Bernal did not challenge the doping offense and is banned until after the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. She also was stripped of her 2025 World Cup Finals **** le.
The ITA said she had one year cut from a routine four-year ban “due to her early admission” of the doping.
Bernal tested positive for nandrolone in an out-of-competition test in September last year, the agency said.
Three weeks earlier she helped Mexico beat the U.S. in the final to win gold in the women’s team compound event at the world championships held in Gwangju, South Korea.

Zoe Backstedt is targeting a Tour de France Femmes debut after an "incredible" double ****** le-winning week at the British National Road Championships.
First the 21-year-old rider from south Wales successfully defended her elite time-trial crown with a dominant win on Thursday.
