Democratic state parties announced Monday that they are launching an operation for the midterm elections they're calling the "New Battlefield Project," intended to recruit 10,000 volunteers to guard polling places in case armed federal officers show up.
Activists are planning mass protests if the Trump administration tries to interfere with voting or ballot counting. And legal scholars are distributing white papers advising judges what they should do if the government tries to seize ballots.
The unprecedented efforts are in response to President Donald Trump's equally unprecedented moves to interfere in this year's midterm elections, which include attempts to impose proof-of-citizenship requirements to register to vote and directing the Postal Service to play a central role in deciding which voters should get a mail ballot.
The anxious contingency planning as voting gets underway has become a marker for how fraught democracy has become in the country that once stood as an example to the world.
"We have never prepared for an election sabotage event like we have now," said Ezra Levin of the left-leaning group Indivisible.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has agreed to a significant portion of a stringent ethics proposal that is part of broader cryptocurrency legislation headed for a key vote this week, according to three of the bill's main Republican authors.
The sweeping bill initially had just a provision included that would bar all federally elected officials and their spouses, as well as federal judges, from issuing digital ***** ets.
A core group of Democrats, as well as Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., said that didn't go far enough to address conflict-of-interest issues they had with Trump's crypto wealth. Their votes would be needed to advance the bill in a key vote this Tuesday.
Tillis and Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., along with several other Democrats, had demanded language that would allow state attorneys general to step in and enforce the law in addition to the Justice Department.
In announcing Trump's agreement, Republican Sens. Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, Tim Scott of South Carolina and John Boozman of Arkansas said it includes a "meaningful role" for state attorneys general to play in enforcing the crypto measure should it become law.

Andres Cortes remained unbeaten with a solid but somewhat strange victory over Mark Magsayo, who may have set a new record for amount of times a fighter was knocked down but officially wasn't, and a late rally from Magsayo wasn't nearly enough.
Two knockdown calls by referee Celestino Ruiz were reversed, and Magsayo was down without being ruled down twice after that, which was probably the most memorable thing about the fight.
The former featherweight ****** leholder Magsayo (29-3, 19 KO) did show some signs of life late in the fight, but it couldn't overcome the earlier lead built by Cortes, who improves to 26-0 (13 KO).

Tommy McMillen doesn't always make it look pretty but he sure knows how to put on a show as he won a back-and-forth war against Marwan Rahiki at Noche UFC on Saturday.
The featherweights battled it out over three rounds with Rahiki nearly scoring a finish in the second round and then McMillen storming back to win the third round and the fight. It was a wild affair but when the final horn sounded, McMillen had done enough for the victory with the judges scoring the fight 29-28, 29-28 and 29-27 in his favor.
"Let's go Arizona!" McMillen shouted to his home audience. "He had a pretty good second round, busted me up a little bit but I knew I could out dog him.
"Tomorrow morning, I'm going hopt on a [plane] to Vegas and I'll be there on Dec. 12 waiting on my next victim and my next $100K bonus."
An early takedown opened the fight for McMillen but Rahiki was quick to break free and get back to the feet. The featherweights were just standing and banging with both landing some solid strikes along the way. A late pair of right hands from McMillen definitely caught Rahiki off guard as they continued blasting away at each other.

Reigning ONE Atomweight Muay Thai World Champion Nadaka Yoshinari made a statement in his kickboxing debut, defeating Har Ling Om via unanimous decision in the main event of ONE SAMURAI 3, which aired live from Yokohama Buntai in **** an on Saturday, September 12.
Both men entered the bout stepping into unfamiliar territory. Nadaka, widely considered **** an's greatest Muay Thai practitioner, was making his first foray into professional kickboxing. Har Ling Om, a Lethwei and Muay Thai veteran from Myanmar, arrived in enemy territory believing his heavier hands could shock the **** anese star in front of his own fans.
In round one, the man who hasn't lost in seven years adapted to the new rule set well, using his straight left to snap his opponent's head back while teasing teeps into Har Ling Om's midsection. A big right hand from the 28-year-old Myanmar slugger showed Nadaka his opposite number had genuine power, but it did little to change the outcome.
The Eiwa Sports Gym representative picked up two warnings for excessive clinching in round two. However, he quickly returned to the game plan, doubling up on left kicks and continuing to pepper his foe with the same piston-like straight left he used in the first three minutes. Har Ling Om played to the crowd, but he did little to sway the judges.

DETROIT — His college career unfrozen by a judge, Orlando Lovejoy is headed to the frozen tundra.
Lovejoy, who starred for Detroit Mercy men's basketball the last two seasons, has committed to fellow Horizon League program Green Bay for his fifth and final season of eligibility.
Lovejoy was among hundreds of college athletes from the high-school class of 2022 who were granted a fifth season of eligibility through temporary restraining orders from judges across the country. The NCAA recently announced a five-year eligibility window, starting with the high-school class of 2023.
Lovejoy, 23, was one of the top point guards in the Horizon League the last two seasons, and in 2025-26, he was first-team all-league as he led the **** ans to within a whisker of the league tournament championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Lovejoy, a Detroit native, started all 31 games for Detroit Mercy in 2025-26, and was top 10 in the league in scoring (15.8 points), **** ists (3.7) and steals (1.6). He made free throws at an 89.2% clip.
Lovejoy spent his first two college seasons at Eastern Michigan, before transferring to Detroit Mercy after the school hired Mark Montgomery as head coach. He contemplated transferring after his first season at Detroit Mercy to capitalize on NIL opportunities, but he ultimately returned to the **** ans and led them to the Horizon League championship game, in which they led much of the game before falling to Wright State, 66-63.

A federal court on Sept. 9 dismissed a lawsuit between former Memphis football receiver Cortez Braham and the NCAA, ending a legal saga that stretched on for more than a year.
Braham initially sued the NCAA in 2025 to get an additional year of eligibility. He was granted a preliminary injunction before transferring to Memphis, where he was the Tigers' leading receiver in 2025. After the season ended, Braham's lawyers filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit.
The NCAA fought it, saying in legal filings that it wanted to enforce the "rule of restitution" against Memphis for playing a player they said should have been ineligible. Lawyers for both sides argued their cases in a Las Vegas courtroom in March.
A ruling finally came on Sept. 9, when the panel of judges ruled that the case was moot and dismissed it.
"Famously, in sports, "it ain't over 'til it's over." But, in this case, it's over," Judge Gabriel P. Sanchez wrote. "The game clock has run out on the 2025 college football season. With these appeals, the NCAA attempts one last Hail Mary pass: asking us to reverse the preliminary injunctions granted to these college football players that allowed them to play in the now complete 2025 season. Because these injunctions have already expired and these players' collegiate careers are over, no effective relief can be granted to the NCAA. We therefore dismiss these appeals as moot."

A federal appeals court ruled that a Texas woman can't sue two Santa Fe police officers who pinned her face down on a fire ant hill while she was handcuffed, causing her to receive hundreds of painful bites to her face.
In an August 6 opinion, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit reversed a lower court decision allowing Taylor Rogers' lawsuit against the City of Santa Fe and the two officers to move forward. Instead, the panel held that the officers were shielded from her claims under the doctrine of qualified immunity.
In a press conference last Friday, Rogers' attorney, Randy Kallinen, criticized the ruling.
"The United States 5th Circuit Court of Appeals is out of touch with the Constitution and the public, granting police immunity in the most egregious of cases," Kallinen said. "The people need to elect officials who will nominate and affirm judges loyal to the Constitution."
Kallinen told The Daily News that he has requested an en banc hearing for the full 15-member 5th Circuit to review the case, and he'll petition the Supreme Court for review if that fails.

ISTANBUL (AP) — Mattéo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood have been charged by UEFA over alleged provocations of Lyon fans at a Champions League qualifying playoff, their club Fenerbahce said Thursday.
Both players have played for Lyon's French rival Marseille and were seen making offensive gestures last week. Fenerbahce won 2-1 in the second leg at Lyon to advance to the Champions League main phase for the first time in 18 years.
Guendouzi raised his middle finger to Lyon fans during the warmup and after the game and shouted "Allez l'OM" ("Go Marseille"), also grabbing his crotch, in wild post-match scenes. He said Lyon fans insulted his family before and during the game.
It was unclear if UEFA's disciplinary judges will sanction the players before Fenerbahce opens the Champions League main phase next Thursday, hosting Roma. Fenerbahce's second game is at Aston Villa on Oct. 14.
Fenerbahce did not specify the charges against Guendouzi and Greenwood though it said it will "protect the rights and interests" of them and the club.

Of course, the latest rounds of craziness have been self-inflicted by the NCAA. While there was good intention behind the NCAA's new 5-for-5 rule, the NCAA's not including the class of 2022 in that rule has created a major mess across the college sports landscape, as the fight for eligibility isn't being taken to the NCAA itself, but to courts across the country.
This has created ongoing chaos over which players are eligible based on decisions of random judges around the United States, who almost certainly didn't envision themselves being cast as central characters in college sports storylines and playing a role in which teams will be contenders for the College Football Playoffs or the Final Four.
But nonetheless, here we are.

UFC middleweight Anthony Hernandez criticized referee Herb Dean for not taking a point away from Gregory Rodrigues at UFC Sacramento.

Cris Cyborg appears set to continue her fighting career after a hard-fought points win against Ketlen Vieira at PFL Tampa in Florida.
The Brazilian was expected to call time on her decorated 21-year career in MMA that includes a near eight-year unbeaten streak, but PFL featherweight world champion Cyborg did not secure the dominant win she would have wanted against Vieira.
The fight went the five rounds as Cyborg struggled to control her heavier opponent - whose big weight miss meant she couldn't win the PFL ***** le - and Vieira set a constant pace, briefly wobbling Cyborg with heavy hooks in the closing moments of the second round.
All three judges saw it in Cyborg's favour, however, and the 41-year-old suggested she intended to continue with her career after her 30th win.

Teofimo Lopez officially joined the exclusive club of three-division boxing world champions on Saturday night in Las Vegas, though his WBA ******* le win over Rolando "Rolly" Romero didn't come without its share of critics and controversy.
Lopez (23-2, 13 KOs) appeared to soundly outbox a sleepy Romero (17-3, 13 KOs) inside the T-Mobile Arena to capture the WBA welterweight ******* le in a fight that never really got out of first gear. The tepid nature of the bout perhaps shouldn't have come as a surprise, considering the well-documented friendship the two fighters have shared for more than a decade, yet it was a baffling 114-114 scorecard from judge Glenn Feldman that drew just as much — if not more — condemnation as Lopez and Romero's performances Saturday.
In a fight that many observers viewed as a rout, which saw Lopez out-punch Romero 124-73 in total punches and 62-49 in power punches, Feldman improbably scored the bout a draw — meaning if judges Max DeLuca (115-113 Lopez) and Tim Cheatham (116-112 Lopez) had agreed, Romero would've controversially left Las Vegas with the WBA world ******* le still wrapped around his waist.
Fortunately, yet another boxing judging crisis was averted this time. But Lopez's win still invited a healthy mix of aspersions and praise from his fellow fighters, ranging from former opponent George Kambosos Jr. panning the bout as a "glorified sparring session," to recent foe Shakur Stevenson giving both Lopez and Romero their due credit.

Cris Cyborg defended her PFL featherweight ******* le against Ketlen Vieira—who was ineligible to win the ******* le due to missing weight by seven pounds—in the main event of PFL Tampa, which went down Saturday night in Florida, and appears to be far from done in combat sports.
Early on, Cyborg attacked Vieira with jabs to the body, but had a hard time finding the distance to even secure a takedown against her heavier opponent. Cyborg hurt Vieira with a calf kick in Round 2, but the Nova União fighter fired back to rock her late in the round.
Cyborg entered Round 3 focused on takedowns, scoring points with heavy ground-and-pound while Vieira tried to close guard and threaten with armbars. Vieira's success on the feet made Cyborg once again clinch and go for takedowns, but Vieira countered a takedown with a judo throw to leave Cyborg bloodied with ground-and-pound of her own.
The final stanza began and Cyborg scored a takedown early, but Vieira quickly got back to her feet and then took the champion down. Cyborg only managed to get back up with 90 seconds left on the clock, and from that point on they traded blows until the final horn sounded.
Cyborg and Vieira combined for 308 strikes over five rounds of action at Benchmark International Arena, and all three judges scored it for Cyborg (49-46, 48-47, 49-46). The longtime veteran now enters free agency with a 30-2 record and a 10-fight win streak, and is now undefeated for nearly eight years.

NEW YORK (AP) — A civil rights agency accused of halting a ***** ual harassment case filed on behalf of female prison guards is now blaming an administrative judge for doing so in error.
A labor union and two female prison guards sued the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which enforces employment anti-discrimination laws, for indefinitely suspending proceedings in their case as part of a wider effort to halt all federal-sector class claims pending before the agency's administrative judges.
The lawsuit cited an administrative judge's order dated Dec. 10, 2025, stating that the ***** ual harassment case had been paused and that the "notification applies to all class cases in the federal sector."
But in a court document filed Thursday evening, EEOC Chief Operating Officer Sharon Rose said the judge in the case issued the notification "in error" and that it was an "isolated incident." Rose also told the court that the EEOC has transferred the case to another administrative judge, who on Monday issued an order scheduling further proceedings.
The court document also included a letter sent by Justice Department attorney James Harlow to the plaintiffs on Monday, offering the same explanation and asking them to drop their motion for a preliminary injunction.

Aug 14 (Reuters) - A federal judge on Friday cleared the way for U.S. President Donald Trump's administration to strip nearly 1,100 Somalis ‌of legal protections against deportation that have allowed them to live and ‌work in the United States.
U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs in Boston allowed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to terminate the Temporary Protected Status designation for Somalia after the U.S. Supreme Court in June allowed the administration to end similar protections for thousands of people from Haiti and Syria.
The Supreme Court's ruling, powered by its 6-3 ‌conservative majority, curtailed the ability ⁠of judges to review DHS efforts under Trump to end TPS designations for 13 countries that provided humanitarian immigration protection ⁠to eligible migrants from those nations.
Lawyers for the plaintiffs and DHS did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Two other judges last week allowed the administration to similarly end TPS for South Sudan and Myanmar. Only the end of TPS for ‌Ethiopia remains blocked by a judge.

Mackenzie Dern successfully defended her strawweight **** le with a largely one-sided but somewhat lackluster outing against Gillian Robertson in the UFC 330 co-main event.
Takedowns and submission attempts ruled the day for Dern as she came close to finishing Robertson a couple of times during the fight but she mostly just maintained control and showed she was the superior grappler. Robertson really didn't produce any offense until the final round and even then she just managed to stay in control on the ground without really damaging Dern.
When it was over the judges scored the fight 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47 with Dern getting the unanimous decision victory.
"I'm super happy," Dern said about her win. "My first **** le win I got taken down a lot of times so I've been working on my wrestling. I'm still the champion. I definitely wanted to submit her, that was the goal. I try to get submissions in all my fights. I wish I could do some more damage to set up the submissions."
A striking exchange led to Robertson shooting for a takedown but Dern countered effectively before the strawweights separated again. Dern was very effective with her combinations including a stiff leg kick that kept chipping away at Robertson's base.

Mark Pope and the Kentucky basketball team have an open roster spot on the team that they weren't sure they would fill this offseason. Then, multiple judges made rulings that potentially allowed a group of class of 2022 players to gain an extra year of eligibility, making it much more likely to fill that last spot.
Kentucky is said to have their eyes on multiple players involved in the rulings. The most attractive option, though, might be former Missouri star Mark Mitchell.
Mitchell averaged 18 points and 5 rebounds per game last year for Missouri, and made 38% of his three-point attempts. His name wasn't called at the NBA draft, however, and he signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Denver Nuggets.
As judges sided with players in multiple injunctions around the country, Mitchell, along with several other athletes, also brought his case to court, looking for an added year of play. His case was to heard on Friday in Louisville.
The players, as well as Pope and his staff, were hoping to get a favorable ruling that would not only give them another season, but also allow them to transfer to the school of their choice. The bad news is that no ruling was given on Friday. The good news is that Judge Brian Edwards only pushed a ruling back until next week.

President Donald Trump's goal of ending gender-affirming care is not improper and cannot be the basis for quashing a subpoena issued by the Justice Department against a provider of medical treatment for transgender youth, a divided federal appeals court ruled Friday.
The Justice Department announced last year that it had issued more than 20 subpoenas to doctors and clinics that provide gender-affirming care as part of an effort to investigate healthcare fraud. Federal judges have quashed many of the subpoenas as illegitimate efforts to intimidate providers into ending care.
In a 2-1 decision, a panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the efficacy and long-term risks of the treatments are "uncertain," and the president has the power to align the Justice Department's enforcement priorities with his broader policy goals.
"Every President has law enforcement priorities, just as every President has signature policies (often, the former are components of the latter)," Judge Carlos Bea wrote.
Bea, a nominee of Republican President George W. Bush, was joined in the opinion by Daniel Bress, a Trump nominee. They reversed a ruling that quashed the subpoena against telemedicine provider QueerDoc, sending the case back to the district court to consider other arguments.

After three hard-fought rounds, Akimoto (13-1, 8-1 Rizin) emergedvictorious, while Erbst (35-10-1, 1 NC; 10-5, 1 NC Rizin) may haveseen his path back to the ****** le derailed.

Koike was active with kicks in the first round and landed dozens toAkimoto's legs and midsection during the first two minutes alone.Akimoto stayed calm as Koike chased him with punches. A counterleft hook rocked Koike and backed him into a corner, but herecovered quickly and took Akimoto's back. Akimoto remained on hisfeet and wobbled Koike again with punches during the final 30seconds.

Koike pressed forward with punches in the second round, but Akimotobegan to time his strikes and snapped Koike's head back with jabsand crosses.
