It's not the first time, nor will it be the last. This past Saturday, College GameDay devoted a segment to the upcoming vote on the Protect College Sports Act this week in Congress. Regardless of your political leanings, a college football pregame show devoted time at the official kickoff of the season to publicly support national legislation with no representation of the opposing view.
Is this the new normal? Is this the expectation moving forward? Without question, college football needs some sort of reform. But is this act the fix? And should it be debated on a college football pregame show to kick off a new season of Saturdays in the fall? If Saturday was an example, where was the debate? There was none.
I'm not naive enough to believe sports and politics have never mixed on sports television programming. I've always argued that if there is a direct connection between sports and a political debate, then engage. But engage properly. Except, Saturday provided a moment where the intersection was direct. However, the forum was not open to the other side.
Instead, this was lobbying. Not discussion. This was advocacy, not debate.
Yes, Nick Saban is a staunch supporter of the act proposed in Congress. In fact, he testified before a Senate committee in support of the bill and appears in a commercial supporting it. Yes, Pat McAfee is also a supporter of the act. He's said as much on his daily sports talk program.

This is an exciting time for investors. Emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and electric vehicles (EVs), offer strong investment opportunities in innovative businesses.
One such company is QuantumScape (NASDAQ: QS). It sits at the intersection of AI and EVs, since its solid-state battery technology can provide power for both. The company recently announced the creation of business units dedicated to these two areas, and a third focused on other markets, including aerospace and defense.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
After hitting a 52-week high of $19.07 in 2025, the stock fell to a low of $4.77 toward the end of July and has remained near that level. Is this a buy opportunity? Here's a closer look at QuantumScape and whether it's a worthwhile investment.
The energy density, power performance, and safety profile of QuantumScape's solid-state batteries caught the attention of Volkswagen, which has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the battery maker over the past several years. Volkswagen isn't the only interested party.

Brian Kelly knows the intersection of culture, politics, sports and LSU all too well.
He remembers receiving an invitation to one of Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry's biggest fundraisers — a "gator-tagging event" — amidst LSU's own preseason football camp.
Kelly is not at all surprised LSU's attempt to play athletes who had spent time in NFL training camps has become intertwined with all things… Louisiana.
Opinion: Lane Kiffin has LSU at war with SEC. The consequences could last years

Global liquidity may matter more than the Fed's next rate decision for crypto markets in September, according to Utkarsh Ahuja, founder and managing partner at Moon Pursuit Capital.
In a note shared with Cryptoprowl, Ahuja said crypto could enter another period of volatility or consolidation next month, but said a pullback would not necessarily mark the beginning of a broader downturn. Instead, weaker prices could help reset positioning, which could leave markets in better shape for the fourth quarter.
"Monetary policy, inflation, global money supply, credit creation and financial conditions are becoming increasingly important to the direction of risk ****** ets," Ahuja wrote. "Crypto sits particularly close to that intersection because it trades globally, around the clock, and tends to respond quickly to changes in liquidity and risk appetite," he added.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the software landscape, giving investors a reason to reconsider which companies can capture the next wave of enterprise spending. Zoom Communications (ZM) occupies an appealing intersection, pairing an established communications platform with an expanding AI strategy.
Zoom once depended heavily on video conferencing. Its enterprise business now grows faster than overall revenue, while AI products play a larger role across its broader platform. Meanwhile, the company's Anthropic investment has evolved into a strategic **** et, giving investors a solid reason to examine Zoom's multifaceted stock story.

Will this be the year that the tight end position finally lives up to its potential? For years we've hoped for a deep group of TEs riddled with talent at every draft point, only to end up with the same elite group and then a bunch of "Play and pray" options. But maybe this season will be different. Our Yahoo ****** ysts take a look at the tight end position and share their breakout candidate for 2026.
Breakouts tend to exist at the intersection of talent and situation. And for Brenton Strange, the talent piece of the equation isn't hard to see. Since joining the Jaguars in '23, Strange's routes and target share have been on an upward trajectory. The Penn State product barely saw the field his rookie season (2.2% target rate), but he evolved into one of Trevor Lawrence's go-to options as Jacksonville marched toward the playoffs.
After returning from a hip injury sustained in Week 5, Strange supplanted Brian Thomas Jr. as the "WR3" (16.6% share) and even led the team in red-zone targets (14). Plus, the added cardio has only allowed us to see more of his athletic ability, as his yards per route run (9th among all TEs in '25 – min. 10 games played) and YAC per reception picked up between Years 2 and 3.
But I'll admit Strange's situation is, well, strange! The Jaguars traded for and compensated Jakobi Meyers for bringing the passing game to life and got a breakout performance from their 6th-round WR out of the same draft class. Oh, and Thomas Jr. and Travis Hunter are still there. The "lot of mouths to feed" argument will keep Strange's draft-cost down, but let's not forget his productivity and utility within this offense. — Chris Allen
After the Rashid Shaheed trade, Johnson was the TE5 in yards per game and TE8 in receptions per game from Week 10 on. With Jordyn Tyson out until the Week 6-9 range, Johnson should start out strong, as this is the same Saints receiving corps as it was during that explosive sample. The Saints have the advantages of playing against the NFC South, playing indoors and operating in the No. 1 neutral pace offense. Johnson is also good! Watch him!

Two weeks ago, USC and Notre Dame announced that the two schools will renew their storied football rivalry beginning in 2030. However, the Trojans and Irish are not set to face off in the regular season for the next four years.
But could they meet before then in the postseason? In his 2026 college football season predictions, Brett Ciancia of Pick Six Previews has USC and Notre Dame playing each other in the first round of the College Football Playoff. The winner of that game would advance to meet Georgia in the quarterfinals.
For starters, any prediction that has the Trojans in the playoff will be music to the ears of USC fans. Beyond that, getting college football's greatest intersectional rivalry in a winner-take-all postseason game would be appointment television for all fans of the sport.
First, however, USC needs to worry about making the playoff. This will not be an easy task, as even without the Irish on the schedule, the Trojans still have to play a difficult Big Ten schedule that includes Indiana, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, and Washington.

One week out from the earthquake that shook Colombia to its core, Shakira is returning home. On Monday, the singer travels to Chocó, the area that bore the brunt of the magnitude-7.4 quake that struck on August 10 with an epicenter in San José del Palmar. It's a trip she's making not as a performer, but as a Colombian.
Shakira is on her way to Colombia to visit her country as it heals from the impact of the earthquake (@ Matthias Hangst)
According to Vanitatis, Shakira is expected to land around 2:30 p.m. local time and head to a local school, accompanied by the mayor and the governor of the region. Her arrival is scheduled for roughly 3:15 p.m., when she'll spend the day with students, families, and teachers still reeling from the disaster.
The stop is no coincidence: the school sits at the intersection of Shakira's music career and her philanthropic one. It's tied to her Barefoot Foundation, which opened its first school in Quibdó, Chocó's capital, back in 2005. In the two decades since, the foundation has built out a network of programs aimed at improving educational access for children and expanding opportunities for teenagers and young adults across Colombia, with education as the throughline of everything it does.
Few artists carry the weight that Shakira does in Colombia, and her presence in Chocó this week is being read as a gesture of solidarity from one of the country's own, delivered in person rather than from a stage or a screen.

F1 unveils new global campaign 'Five Lights' featuring actor Colin Farrell, as the sport gets back into racing mode after summer break with the Dutch GP at Circuit Zandvoort.
Having featured F1 ambassador Damon Idris in the pre-season marketing campaign to start the new era of Formula 1, they have unveiled a new global marketing campaign, 'Five Lights', featuring another Hollywood actor Collin Farrell, as the voiceover artist.
The campaign, which is a 90-second film, will run from August 16 until September 13, across social media and digital platforms of F1. It will cover six major and recognisable entertainment and cultural destinations across the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
The locations include Piccadilly Circus and The Outernet in London, Sunset Boulevard, The Moxy and the Music District in Los Angeles, Times Square at the intersection of 45th Street and Broadway in New York, and Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas Strip.
The video captures all the 22 F1 drivers. They have used the famous five lights, which illuminates before every grand prix start. While Farrell is narrating the storylines, the music track Reign by UNKLE featuring Ian Brown, plays alongside, further adding to the film.

It's not often a player can be credited with saving the careers of thousands of players who followed him or ensured that a select few of those would go on to earn hundreds of millions of dollars thanks to his courage.
Yet Tommy John, in conjunction with orthopedist Frank Jobe, did just that for generations of pitchers.
John died Saturday, Aug. 15 at the age of 83, his 288-win career almost a footnote in the grand scope of his life. He served as patient No. 1 for the surgery that would eventually bear his name is among the most significant off-field impacts a player can make.
When he agreed to let Jobe replace the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow in 1974, it was a journey into the unknown at the intersection of sports and medicine. Nowadays, the surgical scar and the established protocols for recovery, regaining strength and eventually returning to the mound are well-established and even more evolved.
Yet all that was foreign to Jobe and John. And you could fill up a wing of the Hall of Fame with those who have benefited.

Sands Capital, an investment management company, released its "Sands Capital Technology Innovators Fund" Q2 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. In the quarter, global equities rebounded sharply, with the MSCI ACWI posting its strongest quarterly gain since 2020, supported by broad market strength, easing geopolitical tensions, and continued enthusiasm for AI infrastructure. Information technology led the advance, with semiconductor and hardware companies accounting for most of the index's rise. The fund returned 26.9% (net) in the second quarter of 2026. The portfolio benefited from strong gains across memory, software infrastructure, cybersecurity, and other AI-related holdings, although its concentrated exposure to mega-cap chip designers and manufacturers weighed on relative performance as leadership broadened into CPUs, networking, and memory. Vertical software, internet, and financial holdings were modest detractors amid macro concerns and uncertainty over AI disruption. The fund remains focused on critical AI bottlenecks, including compute, memory, manufacturing, networking, and power, while retaining selected businesses that may use AI to strengthen their competitive positions. You can check the fund's top five holdings to learn more about its leading investment ideas for the year.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Sands Capital Technology Innovators Fund highlighted TTM Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTMI) as a new addition. TTM Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTMI) manufactures and sells mission systems, radio frequency (RF) components, RF microwave/microelectronic ******* emblies, and printed circuit boards (PCBs) and substrates in the United States and internationally. On August 7, 2026, TTM Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTMI) closed at $137.21 per share. One-month return of TTM Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTMI) was -0.64% and its shares gained 207.58% over the past 52 weeks. TTM Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTMI) has a market capitalization of $14.45 billion.
Sands Capital Technology Innovators Fund stated the following regarding TTM Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTMI) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"TTM Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTMI) is a leading Western manufacturer of highly complex printed circuit boards (PCBs) and integrated electronic subsystems. We believe the company is positioned at the intersection of AI data center growth and defense modernization. TTM is 75 percent sole sourced in U.S. aerospace and defense projects due to lack of domestic competitors and is already booking revenue from Golden Dome. Minnie Driver just revealed she was in a "really bad" car accident in a new video while wearing a neck brace.
On Thursday, August 6, the Good Will Hunting actress, 56, took to Instagram with a message for fans after the scary crash.
"Hi, guys. Paris update is that I'm actually back in London," Driver began the clip, while lying on her side on a bed with a neck brace and cuddling her dog. "I got into a really bad car accident a few days ago with my friend, Ben. And we somehow walked out of it. Well, we didn't walk out of it; we crawled out of it. But we did get out of it alive."
She continued, "To be very clear, it was not our fault. We were driving on a country road in the middle of France, and a car didn't stop at an intersection and was going at speed. And we just T-boned it."
Of her injuries, Driver said she has a sprained neck and is "sort of in shock and crying all the time." She added, "But I'm going to heal. And the reason I'm not dead, honestly, is the car that we were driving."

Donald Trump has created a way for Wall Street to pay to win. Trump Media & Technology Group's premium data product released its new subscription service for earlier access to Truth Social posts for $100,000 a month. According to reports, five Wall Street firms have already signed up for the service, gaining access to Truth Social posts milliseconds before the general public.
"I'll be blunt," Gian Luca Clementi, an economics professor at NYU Stern School of Business, told Fortune. "This is insider trading by definition."
Because Trump owns roughly 41% of the company's shares, he stands to directly profit from the new recurring revenue stream. At five subscribers alone, the service would generate about $500,000 in monthly revenue, or $6 million annually.
That figure is modest by the standards Trump has set since returning to the White House. His 2025 financial disclosure showed his businesses generated more than $2 billion in personal income last year—nearly quadruple his 2024 total—with the bulk flowing from ventures that sit directly at the intersection of his office and his balance sheet. He earned roughly $1.4 billion from cryptocurrency alone, including $635 million in royalties from his $TRUMP meme coin and more than $500 million from World Liberty Financial, the crypto venture run by his sons.
Notably, Trump signed legislation promoting stablecoins just months after World Liberty launched its own—a policy-to-profit pipeline structurally similar to what Truth API now does with his social media posts. He has also collected millions from Trump-branded Bibles, sneakers, and watches, and Melania Trump secured a reported $28 million deal with Jeff Bezos for a documentary. Truth API is the latest mechanism in an established playbook.

Section 280E forces U.S. cannabis operators to pay effective tax rates above 70%, an existential burden that a move to Schedule III would immediately eliminate.
MSOS rallied 99% on rescheduling hopes, but prediction markets price just 18% odds by July, and TLRY has shed 97% from its peak.
Act now: the **** yst who called NVIDIA in 2010 just named his top 10 AI stocks — and Tilray Brands didn't make the cut. Grab the names FREE today.
While cannabis investors finally have an expedited DEA administrative hearing on the calendar and a fresh Schedule III pathway in motion, Wall Street has stood at this exact intersection before. The pure-play U.S. cannabis proxy, AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF (NYSEARCA: MSOS), has vaulted 99.2% over the trailing year on rescheduling hope, yet still trades 81.0% below its September 2020 launch price. The pattern of euphoria followed by collapse has been the only consistent feature of this trade.
The catalyst this time around centers on Section 280E. That single line of the tax code denies cannabis sellers the ordinary business deductions every other operator takes for granted, taxing them on gross profit rather than net income, and pushing effective tax rates above 70% for U.S. multi-state operators. A move from Schedule I to Schedule III would remove that burden. The DEA's expedited hearing began June 29, 2026, with a conclusion targeted for mid-July and a potential final rule in the Federal Register to follow.

A few blocks away, Los Angeles police formed a skirmish line as officers cleared another gathering.

The World Cup has always been about more than football.
Every four years it becomes a meeting place for history, migration and identity, where national teams often tell stories that stretch far beyond the pitch. Some countries export ideas. Others export players. Increasingly, many do both.
Few fixtures at World Cup 2026 capture that intersection more completely than the Netherlands against Morocco.
On paper, it is one of the standout ties of the last 32.
The Netherlands arrive in Monterrey unbeaten after topping Group F with seven points and scoring 10 goals - matching their most prolific World Cup group stage. Morocco have also progressed undefeated - finishing behind Brazil only on goal difference after collecting seven points from a group containing Scotland and Haiti.

The Knicks clinched their first NBA ******* le in 53 years, and thousands of ecstatic fans flooded the intersection of 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue to make sure everyone within a five-block radius knew about it. Most of the mayhem involved buses and police cars. One clip, however, involved a silver McLaren, a Latrell Sprewell jersey, and a Frank Sinatra song.
The video, which has been circulating on social media since Saturday night, shows a man in a number 8 Sprewell Knicks jersey, patterned shorts, and bright orange trainers stepping up to a McLaren stopped in the middle of Times Square. The car‘s dihedral door is open.
The crowd is losing its mind. What they may not have immediately registered is that the man had a plastic water bottle in his left hand when he leaned in. But the bottle – or at least its contents – stayed with the McLaren. The camera then pans to the rear of the car, New Jersey plate visible, as it pulls away through the cheering crowd.
