JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri's top election official has rejected a citizens' petition seeking a statewide referendum on new congressional districts backed by President Donald Trump.
Supporters of the referendum had submitted hundreds of thousands of petition signatures in a bid to force a November election on a new U.S. House map approved by the Republican-led state Legislature. But Republican Secretary of State Denny Hoskins ****** erted Tuesday that the petition is void because congressional redistricting plans cannot be subject to voter referendums.
The number of petition signatures submitted doesn't matter, Hoskins said, because "challenging a congressional map is unconstitutional under Missouri law."
A group backing the referendum effort said it will contest Hoskins' decision in court.
"Secretary of State Hoskins is making a last desperate attempt to silence the people's voice in Missouri," Richard von Glahn, executive director of People Not Politicians Missouri, said in a statement, while ****** erting there are more than enough signatures to qualify the referendum for the ballot.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., one of Congress' most outspoken progressives and a member of the "Squad," won the 12th Congressional District's Democratic primary Tuesday evening, teeing up her re-election for a fifth term.
Tlaib's primary victory against Michigan state lawmaker Shanelle Jackson and Inkster Mayor Byron Nolen continues a string of victories for progressives as the Democratic Party's far-left wing enjoys ***** ounced primary election success that has strengthened the hand of its coalition. It has also widened the range of positions held by their candidates.
When Tlaib and fellow Squad members joined the House of Representatives in 2019, their campaigns stood out for their far-left views. Tlaib and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., in particular, stood out because of their membership in the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
Eight years later, the DSA has backed Tlaib again.

By now, you've heard the same advice a thousand times: "Stop purchasing packs. Buy singles!" But what if your nearest "local" card shop is hours away or you're searching for a chase card for sale located across the country? That's where eBay comes in.
From cards to Funko Pops, eBay has been a vital lifeline for collectors for decades. As the worldwide brand continues to adapt to meet the needs of its users, Mantel met with Luci Yang, eBay's GM of U.S. Collectibles, at The National to learn more about how the marketplace's latest changes. Here's what she had to say about her career, the importance of community, and how eBay is putting powerful data into the hands of collectors.
Luci Yang, eBay's GM of U.S. Collectibles
You've got undergrad degrees from Harvard, and both an MBA and a JD from Yale. How did you end up working for eBay?
Everyone's path is a little windier than people expect, and mine was too. I spent a long time earlier in my career in business and management consulting. I joined eBay about five years ago, right as the company was leaning hard into its focus-category strategy—you've probably heard our CEO talk about that.
At the time, I joined the automotive parts and accessories team, since that was one of the focus categories then. Over the last five years, I've worked in parts and accessories, electronics, and heavy equipment, another focus area for eBay. This past January, I moved into collectibles. So I come from more of a corporate background, but I'm excited to tap into the childhood passion of collecting. Right now my role is head of U.S. collectibles, with trading cards a big piece of it, along with comics, toys, coins and more.

Luis Figo has implored Gianni Infantino to resign as pressure mounts on the much-criticised Fifa president following his foiled attempts to sell stakes in the World Cup.
Infantino was forced to abandon his plans – namely to sell stakes in the World Cup and other Fifa tournaments to private investors – after public uproar last week, with Uefa confirming a boycott of Fifa events if the plan was voted through.
On Tuesday, Jordan FA president Prince Ali bin Hussein accused Infantino of "blackmail" and, under immense pressure, the Fifa boss has called a meeting with senior leaders of world football's governing body on Wednesday.
Real Madrid and Portugal legend Figo, who stood to be Fifa president in 2015 before withdrawing prior to the election won by Sepp Blatter (who made way for Infantino a year later), has now branded the various actions of Infantino as the "lowest, most deceitful and cravenly self-interested behaviour I have ever witnessed" in a stinging column for the Daily Mail.
Figo, who works as an adviser for Uefa, said: "I could write 10,000 words on the problems at Fifa. But the solution needs only three: Infantino must go.

Shedeur Sanders is fighting for the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback position in training camp.
The Browns selected Sanders with the 144th pick in last year's NFL Draft after many expected him to be selected in the first round.
After starting the season as the third-string QB behind Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel, Sanders started the final seven games.
However, head coach Todd Monken has not named his starting quarterback for the 2026 season during training camp.

A Ballon d'Or speaks out!
A former supporter of Gianni Infantino during the 2015 FIFA presidential election, Luis Figo published a message on his social media this Wednesday in which he openly criticizes the FIFA president and calls for his resignation!
The 2000 Portuguese Ballon d'Or winner harshly criticizes Infantino. Following the abandonment of his controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project, a company intended to open part of FIFA's commercial activities, including the World Cup, to private investors, the Swiss executive remains in turmoil.
Translated message from Luis Figo:
"Today, I join others in our football world in calling for Gianni Infantino to resign from his position as FIFA president.

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza City (AP) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that Israel will not withdraw from its current lines in Gaza until Hamas has completely disarmed and pushed back on a recent deal announced by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Netanyahu's remarks cast more doubt on the deal to disarm Hamas, which was seen as a potential breakthrough for ending the war. It also marked a rare public display of friction with the Trump administration.
The agreement called for Hamas to begin disarming and for Israel to halt its strikes and begin withdrawing from the roughly 60% of Gaza it currently controls. It was based on an October ceasefire agreement that ended major military operations and brought about the release of the remaining hostages held in Gaza but has stalled on other fronts.
Netanyahu, who faces a tough battle for reelection in October, reiterated his stance that disarmament should come first. He said Israeli forces would continue to "do whatever is necessary to protect themselves, our territory, and our citizens."
The Trump administration "sent us a draft. We did not agree. It is not our draft. We sent our comments. … This is our position," Netanyahu said in a video posted on social media.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Absentee voting in Wisconsin discriminates against disabled voters, a judge ruled Tuesday, siding with groups that are seeking to force election officials to allow for electronic casting of ballots.
But Dane County Circuit Judge Everett Mitchell stopped short of ordering electronic voting, setting up a trial on that issue later. It almost certainly will not be resolved before the November election.
Disability Rights Wisconsin, the League of Women Voters and four disabled voters brought the lawsuit in 2024. They argued that the lack of an electronic absentee voting option violated their right to independence and privacy and the protections of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Mitchell issued a temporary injunction in 2024, saying that disabled voters should have the option to vote electronically. But an appeals court reversed that ruling, sending it back to the lower court, saying it was wrong to issue a temporary injunction that would have changed and "significantly disrupted the status quo."
The Republican-controlled Legislature is fighting the lawsuit.

President Donald Trump is trying to shape how he's remembered through his transformations of Washington's monuments, official buildings and grassy parks — and the honors boards at his golf clubs.
But as a frenetic summer rolls on, his legacy instead risks being dominated by a US strategic stalemate in Iran, the unaddressed economic anxieties of millions of Americans, and Republican Party schisms caused by his personal obsessions.
This unusual political bifurcation means Trump is juggling some of the gravest issues confronted by a modern president, like the war, and some of most trivial, including a dispute over Washington's Reflecting Pool. It helps explain polling by CNN and other outlets three months before midterm elections that reveal low approval ratings and dissatisfaction on issues voters care about most.
By any conventional measure, this is a presidency in trouble. The traditional response would be to behave in a more focused way. But Trump is different from most presidents. He doubles down; he picks fights designed to please his political base; and he engineers sudden changes of course.
Throughout a turbulent weekend, Trump oscillated between profound and preposterous issues that all seem to merit equal time in his mind.

Manchester City have confirmed their starting lineup ahead fo today's friendly against the K-League All-Stars at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in South Korea. Enzo Maresca lost on penalties to Inter Milan in their first friendly of their preseason tour of Asia. The match finished 1-1 and City showed a lot at the Kai Tak Stadium, especially in the second half. They will be looking to build on that performance today in Seoul.
Unfortunately, Ryan McAidoo has been ruled out of today's match due to a shoulder injury. Enzo Maresca informed the media yesterday that McAidoo's injury isn't serious or a cause for concern. Matheus Nunes, Ruben Dias, and Omar Marmoush are all available for today's match against the K-League All-Stars. The trio missed Manchester City's first preseason friendly when they linked up with Enzo Maresca's squad after their World Cup commitments.
Enzo Maresca has selected a strong starting eleven for today's friendly against the K-League All-Stars. The Manchester City starting lineup is almost as strong as Enzo Maresca can select from the players he had available. There were two changes made to the starting eleven from the Inter Milan match with Ruben Dias and Rayan Ait-Nouri replacing Stephen Mfuni and Savinho.

Jadeveon Clowney says he's back in Houston for one reason: To win a championship with his original team.
Clowney said after officially signing his contract with the Texans that he had better financial offers from other teams, but he wants to win a ***** le with the team that selected him with the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.
"Trying to chase that Super Bowl with the Texans," Clowney said. "It wasn't about money because I could have went other places for a little bit more money than this. But I'm like, it's Year 13, I started here, go back here, try to win, and see how the rest of my career goes."
Clowney said he's a very different person now at age 33 than he was when he arrived as a 21-year-old rookie, and he hopes to impart some wisdom on the younger players.
"I was a big kid when I first got here," Clowney said. "I grew up different than a lot of these guys. When I was born my dad was in jail, single-parent home, I grew up a lot different. I got here, never seen Houston, I enjoyed my time, it was fun, I came up with a great group of guys. Coming back now, I'm a veteran, a lot older, a lot smarter than I was before."

The Washington Commanders took the practice field on Tuesday morning with a new face. Well, he wasn't new to everyone. Cornerback Fabian Moreau signed with the Commanders on Tuesday morning after cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon's surprise retirement.
Moreau is a former Washington draft pick, having been selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons in the burgundy and gold, departing after the 2020 season. Since his time with Washington, Moreau has played for the Falcons, Texans, Giants, Broncos, Vikings, 49ers and Vikings again in 2025. It was during his time with the Vikings that he met new Commanders defensive coordinator Daronte Jones — then Minnesota's secondary coach.
The 32-year-old Moreau was on the practice field Tuesday and met with reporters after practice.
"Just help the team win, man, I wanna win, win for the city," Moreau said about returning to Washington. "It's a blessing to be back, and I just want to enjoy it all."
During Moreau's first stint with Washington, he wore No. 31. That number is currently shared by running back Kaytron Allen and cornerback Rasul Douglas. This time around, Moreau will wear No. 30.

For years, the electric vehicles (EVs) conversation has revolved around Tesla (TSLA). While Tesla captured headlines with rapid sales growth, industry-leading battery technology, and an ever-expanding lineup of EVs, legacy automakers like General Motors Company (GM) and Ford Motor Company (F) were seen trying hard to catch up. Today, as Tesla prioritizes its bold AI ambitions, its core automotive business is under pressure. Meanwhile, General Motors and Ford have quietly accelerated their own EV strategies. Both companies have invested billions in new platforms, expanded their EV portfolios, and are emerging as serious competitors in the U.S. EV market.
But only one of these legacy players is poised to win the EV race.
Get exclusive insights with the FREE Barchart Brief newsletter. Subscribe now for quick, incisive midday market ******* ysis you won't find anywhere else.
With a market cap of $77.9 billion, General Motors is one of the world's largest automakers, with a portfolio spanning Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, and Buick. For years, GM was criticized for moving too cautiously in the EV business while Tesla stormed ahead. But management repeatedly argued that the company would scale its EV business only if it improved its long-term profitability. Its recent Q2 earnings show that the strategy is beginning to pay off.
Its EV portfolio now includes the Chevrolet Equinox EV, Blazer EV, Cadillac LYRIQ, and the GMC Hummer EV, giving the company a presence across both mass-market and luxury segments. The initial phases of the EV boom rewarded companies that launched vehicles fast into the market. But this phase of EVs is more about which company is actually making money by selling them. And that is precisely what GM is trying to do. Instead of quickly ramping up production, GM has spent the past year restructuring its EV operations to better match actual consumer demand.

For most of the last two decades, the anxiety in power planning was about demand: would consumption grow fast enough to justify new capacity, and how would an aging fleet keep pace? That question has inverted. Demand is no longer the uncertain variable—it is the one thing forecasters are confident about. The uncertainty now sits on the supply side: whether the workforce, the equipment, and the political and economic conditions needed to build and run generation can keep up with a demand curve that is accelerating for the first time in a generation. The International Energy Agency (IEA) put a number on the demand side in its Electricity 2026 report, projecting that global electricity demand will grow by an average of 3.6% per year through 2030, roughly 50% faster than the average over the previous decade, driven by industrial electrification, electric vehicles, air conditioning, and data centers. For the first time in three decades outside of a crisis period, electricity demand has begun to grow faster than the global economy itself. The demand is coming. The open question is deliverability. That framing—supply-side constraints as the binding risk—runs through recent research from Verdantix, a UK-based **** yst firm whose Industrial Dislocation Index scores nine major economies on how far their operating conditions have diverged from their own 30-year norms. For power generation specifically, Verdantix identifies four factors that carry disproportionate weight: politics, geo-economic friction, energy prices, and production inputs.
The clearest signal in the Verdantix data for a power audience is the energy sub-index, which scores each country on how far its energy position has moved from its own historical baseline. The spread is wide. The U.S. sits at the resilient end, with the lowest energy-dislocation score in the study at 1.83, a reflection of its position as a net exporter of natural gas, crude, and coal, with electricity and fuel costs below the global average. At the other end is the UK, at 7.33, the highest in the study—a measure of how sharply its energy position has diverged from what UK industry was historically built around. Germany (5.67) and France (5.50) sit high as well; **** an (4.50), India (3.50), China (3.17), Saudi Arabia (3.00), and Canada (2.67) fall in between. What that gap looks like on the ground varies by market, and Verdantix's country profiles fill it in. The UK's high score traces to underinvestment in nuclear, the grid-modernization costs of shifting to decentralized renewables, and windfall taxes on oil and gas—a combination severe enough that Verdantix notes chemical producers citing UK energy costs as a reason to pull back operations. France is Europe's largest net electricity exporter thanks to its nuclear fleet, but that same concentration is a vulnerability: recent questions about the quality of French reactor maintenance, Verdantix observes, show how quickly a strength can turn into a present-day problem. ****

It's easy, when thinking of the derby di Milano, to close your eyes and relive its history by turning the pages of memories written on the San Siro pitch a ritual shaped over 118 years of encounters that have forged one of the most famous and captivating rivalries in football history.Memories that have defined eras and spanned generations of supporters, stories passed down through the colours of each club, moments made immortal by those who witnessed them. The derby has always been all of this: the occasion when the city comes to a standstill, when the electricity in the air is unmistakable, the day when the rivalry between Inter and AC Milan reaches its peak, as the two sides battle it out on the San Siro turf for ninety unforgettable minutes.Yet the story of the derby extends far beyond the walls of the Meazza. The rivalry between Inter and AC Milan has long since outgrown the boundaries of Milan, becoming international and global. The Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri have conquered the world, and over the years the Derby della Madonnina has gained new chapters written far from San Siro. Fittingly, the very first Derby was not even played in Milano: the earliest documented meeting between the two clubs took place in Chiasso on 19 October 1908, with AC Milan running out 2-1 winners thanks to goals from Lana and Payer, while Forlano scored for Inter. That thread linking Milano to the rest of the world will gain another chapter on Wednesday 5 August, when Inter and AC Milan meet in a friendly at Optus Stadium in Perth, Australia. The fixture continues a tradition that began more than a century ago and provides the perfect opportunity to revisit every Derby played outside Italy, from competitive fixtures to friendlies, tracing the journey of Milano's greatest rivalry far beyond its home city.
Goals: 12' Mazzola (I), 13' Rognoni (M), 26' Mazzola (I), 27' Rig. Rivera (M), 40' Combin (M), 44' Combin (M), 45' Jair (I), 46' Anquilletti (M), 51' Rognoni (M), 84' Bedin.
The first Derby played abroad after the inaugural meeting in Chiasso saw the Nerazzurri and Rossoneri cross the Atlantic, with New York's Yankee Stadium hosting a friendly between AC Milan and Inter on 29 June 1969. Both sides had just enjoyed a decade at the summit of European football, with AC Milan having equalled Inter's tally of two European Cups only a month earlier. The match proved to be a spectacular affair, treating the large Italian-American crowd to a goal-filled contest. AC Milan led 4-3 at half-time, having twice come from behind after Sandro Mazzola's brace before taking the lead through Pierre Combin's two goals. The Rossoneri pulled further clear after the break with strikes from Angelo Anquilletti and Rognoni, before Gianfranco Bedin's late effort completed the scoring in a thrilling 6-4 encounter.
Goals: 4' and 75' Milito (I)

The Packers kick off the 2026 preseason looking to erase the memory of an alarming late-season collapse. After starting 9-3-1 last year, Green Bay dropped five consecutive games to miss out on the postseason, including frustrating fourth-quarter blown leads against the division rival Bears.
Quarterback Jordan Love leads an explosive young core after the departures of Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks. Head coach Matt LaFleur will have to lean on running back Josh Jacobs, receiver Christian Watson and 2025 first-rounder Matthew Golden.
The Packers went defense-heavy in the 2026 NFL draft, selecting cornerback Brandon Cisse, defensive tackle Chris McClellan, and edge rusher Dani Dennis-Sutton in Rounds 2 through 4.
The hope for Green Bay is that edge rusher Micah Parsons can return earlier in the season, too, after his late-season ACL tear a year ago.

Mohamed Salah's next move appears to be taking shape quickly, with BBC Sport reporting that Trabzonspor have begun negotiations to sign the former Liverpool forward. The Egypt international left Anfield at the end of last season and is now in discussions over a free transfer to the Turkish club.
Trabzonspor have moved publicly and decisively, confirming that Salah is due in Istanbul on Wednesday. In their statement, the club said: "The player is planned to reach Trabzon in the evening of the same day." They added: "The time and other details regarding the welcome program in Trabzon will be shared with the public through our club's official communication channels during the day."
For a player of Salah's stature, the speed and clarity of the update is striking. Clubs often keep negotiations private until the final stages, so Trabzonspor's communication suggests confidence that this deal is advancing well. Salah, now 34, remains one of the most decorated forwards of the modern era and would represent a statement signing for any side in the Turkish Super Lig.

Reports ahead of the tour claimed that the senior selection committee had informed the veteran opener he was not part of India's plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup, with the selectors keen to invest in younger opening options, including Yashasvi Jaiswal.

The speculation gathered further pace after Rohit managed a slow-paced 26 off 47 ******* in the second ODI at Cardiff. Questions over his future intensified, with reports suggesting the series decider at Lord's on July 19 could be his final ODI appearance for India.

However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed those claims before the match, stating that no decision had been taken to make the Lord's fixture Rohit's farewell game. While the clarification ended immediate speculation, it did not confirm whether Rohit remained part of India's long-term plans leading up to the 2027 World Cup.

The veteran opener responded in style, smashing 138 from just 110 deliveries during India's chase of 388 at Lord's. His innings, featuring 17 fours and five sixes, made him the first Indian batter to score an ODI century at the iconic venue, although India eventually fell 27 runs short and lost the series 2-1.

Following the match, captain Shubman Gill said Rohit had not informed the team about any retirement plans, while Rohit himself insisted his only focus was on scoring runs for India.

Sharing his views on the situation, Kaif said Rohit's recent actions suggest he has no intention of stepping away voluntarily.

"Yes, one thing has become clear," Kaif said during a discussion. "Rohit Sharma is effectively saying, 'If I am not playing well, you take the call yourselves. Drop me.'

"The fact that he has not stepped away or announced his retirement, the enthusiasm he is showing, the way he is approaching his batting and the hundred he scored at Lord's — all of this shows that he is now focused entirely on playing. Whatever the selectors want to do after that is up to them. Perhaps earlier there was an attempt to convince him about certain things internally. The problem at the moment is that it is difficult to understand who stands where. There is a lot of confusion," Kaif said on his YouTube channel.

Kaif also questioned the lack of clarity from the team management regarding Rohit's long-term future. While coaches have repeatedly backed the opener to play with freedom, the former India batter believes the management should clearly state whether Rohit remains part of its World Cup plans.

"At times, members of the coaching staff come out and say, 'We have given Rohit Sharma complete freedom to play his natural game.' But ******* ody has yet made a clear statement saying, 'Ro

George Lombard Jr.'s MLB debut was electric as the Yankees top prospect smashed a home run for his first hit and helped the team to a 2-0 win over the Cardinals on Tuesday night.
But what was more eye-opening was Lombard's defense.
That aspect of the shortstop's game was always considered major league ready, and Lombard showcased it, making every play hit to him and making some difficult plays seem routine.
"A great first night for him. The home run was great, the defense was tremendous," manager Aaron Boone said of Lombard's debut. "That play in the hole that he and Jazz turned was a pretty special turn. You see how fluid he is, how physical he is. Certainly a night to remember for him and his family, too."
The play Boone is referring to happened in the second inning. In a scoreless tie and the Cardinals looking to stack hits together, Blaze Jordan laced a grounder into the hole between short and third base. Lombard ranged to his left, scooped the ball up and fired to Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second in one fell swoop. Chisholm would complete the inning-ending double play.
