WASHINGTON, Aug 25 (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Reserve will need to raise interest rates soon unless coming data ‌show a continued decline in inflation that remains too high and which has ‌become a "pervasive" concern for businesses and households, Boston Fed President Susan Collins said on Tuesday.
Collins said in comments posted to the Boston Fed website that the current Fed policy rate, under her base case outlook, will continue to push down prices and help with a "gradual disinflation" aided also by the recent rise in longer-term bond yields and other factors.
But "should evidence of sustained inflation progress not materialize, ‌I believe it will be ⁠appropriate to tighten policy soon to ensure we deliver price stability in a reasonable time frame. ... Concerns about high prices are pervasive in my ⁠conversations with stakeholders across New England," Collins wrote.

Washington has expanded a campaign targeting Mexican officials accused of ties to organized crime. The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected an appeal by Meta and TikTok seeking to overturn a lower court ‌ruling requiring them to face more than 3,000 lawsuits filed in federal court, saying the companies had appealed too early.
The companies had argued that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 — which generally shields online companies from claims over content posted by their users — also bars lawsuits claiming they failed to warn the public about the addictive nature of their platforms.

The chipmaker held firm when Huawei demanded relief from the escalating costs, according to two people familiar with the matter.
The standoff came to a head on CXMT's factory floor in June. A group of engineers from a chipmaking-equipment vendor with deep strategic ties to Huawei had been working in the cleanrooms at CXMT's core research and development zone in Hefei, Anhui province. Without warning, CXMT ordered ‌the engineers, who had been helping with equipment maintenance, to pack their tools and leave the factory floor immediately, the two sources said.
Executives at the Huawei-connected equipment vendor, SiCarrier, concluded the confrontation was the result of the power struggle between CXMT and Huawei, the people told Reuters. The companies still do business but the engineers haven't been allowed ‌back into the R&D zone, the two people said.
CXMT, Huawei and SiCarrier didn't respond to questions about the incident.

BOSTON, July 21 (Reuters) - A federal judge on Tuesday temporarily blocked President Donald Trump's administration from stripping tens of thousands of asylum seekers and immigrants who have ‌Temporary Protected Status of their ability to work in the United States.
U.S. District Judge Nathaniel Gorton in Boston sided with ‌a coalition of immigrant rights groups and labor unions that sued to block U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services from moving forward with a series of policies designed to implement new immigration-related restrictions enacted by Congress last year.
Gorton's order will be in place until he decides whether to issue a longer-term pause of the Trump administration's policy. The judge said he would rule on that by August 5. USCIS did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Newly retired, average dual-income couples planning to retire in six years should expect to receive $16,900 less in annual Social Security benefits if Congress continues to do nothing to shore up the funds used to pay beneficiaries, according to the nonpartisan, nonprofit Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget think tank.
The trust fund that supplements incoming payroll taxes to pay monthly Social Security benefits is expected to run dry by the end of 2032, according to the program's trustees. When that happens, the law requires benefits to be reduced by an estimated 22% to ensure the program's costs do not exceed its revenues.
That's when today's 61-year-olds will reach their normal retirement age and when today's youngest retirees will turn 68.
"Social Security's insolvency is no longer a crisis for future lawmakers to deal with," CRFB's report said. "Senators elected this year will be in office when Social Security's retirement fund is exhausted."

PARIS, July 15 (Reuters) - Countries applying a global minimum tax on multinational companies saw corporate tax ‌revenues rise without a corresponding loss of jobs or investment, the Organisation ‌for Economic Co-operation and Development said on Wednesday.
The global minimum tax was designed to curb a decades-long race to the bottom in corporate taxation by allowing countries to levy top-up taxes when profits are taxed below 15% elsewhere, reducing the benefits of booking profits in low-tax jurisdictions.
More than 60 countries and territories have implemented the rules, while many others are preparing to do ‌so.
The Paris-based OECD estimated that ⁠the tax increased government revenue by €79 billion to €109 billion ($90 billion to $124 billion) in its first year, equivalent to 2.4% to 3.4% of global ⁠corporate income tax receipts.

Asked if the potential for disappointment extended to Trump, who picked Warsh to take over as head of the Fed and has said he expects borrowing costs to fall, Warsh said, "we have been an independent central bank for a long time. We are going to be an independent central bank at this moment and you will see no changes on that."

However, the Middle East conflict has upended oil market dynamics, giving Asian refiners a distinctive advantage.
The Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC) is now transitioning the Official Selling Prices (OSPs) for its three offshore crude grades--Upper Zakum, Das, and Umm Lulu--from a differential against Murban futures to a differential against the Dubai benchmark. This change will apply to prompt cargoes loading two months ahead, while the flagship Murban crude remains tied to Murban futures.
ADNOC's decision to price its offshore crude grades against the Dubai benchmark instead of Murban corrects a structural economic distortion that has penalized buyers for years. Murban is a premium, light-sweet crude grade, whereas the offshore grades—Upper Zakum, Das, and Umm Lulu—are medium-sour barrels, yielding completely different product slates.
During the height of the U.S.-Iran conflict, extreme market backwardation and sudden premium demand for light ends caused front-month Murban futures on the IFAD exchange to surge. Because Upper Zakum and Das were priced as a differential pegged directly to Murban, these medium-sour barrels became artificially and prohibitively expensive for Asian refiners, completely detached from their actual physical market fundamentals. By shifting the offshore grades to a Dubai-linked formula—the undisputed global baseline for medium-sour crude—ADNOC is realigning these crudes with their true physical peers, such as Oman and Qatar's Al-Shaheen.

June 23 (Reuters) - Google's YouTube has settled a lawsuit brought by a minor who claimed the platform damaged his mental health, his lawyers ‌said Tuesday, ahead of a second California trial over social media's role in the youth mental health crisis.
The terms of the settlement ‌of the state court lawsuit were confidential, the lawyers said on Tuesday. The suit named four defendants — YouTube, Meta's Instagram, Snap Inc's Snapchat and ByteDance's TikTok — and the remaining three companies are still set to face trial in July.
Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda said in a statement that the lawsuit had been amicably resolved. "Our focus remains on building age-appropriate products and parental controls that deliver on that promise," Castaneda said.

The U.S. military believed the four Iranian drones were targeting ‌regional maritime traffic, a U.S. official told Reuters. U.S. Central Command said on X that the U.S. then struck Iran's surveillance sites in Goruk and Qeshm Island, both in the Strait ‌of Hormuz.
Iran's foreign ministry said that the U.S. action broke an April 8 ceasefire and that such repeated violations showed Washington had no intention of reducing tensions. It warned that the United States would bear responsibility for the consequences of its "illegal actions."

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has issued a pardon to Stephen Buyer, a former Republican congressman from Indiana who served nearly two years in prison for making illegal stock trades based on inside information after he left office.
Buyer was sentenced to 22 months in prison in 2023 for trades made while working as a consultant and lobbyist. He was ordered to forfeit more than $350,000, representing the amount of the illegal gains, and pay a $10,000 fine. He was released in 2025.
In granting "a full, complete, and unconditional pardon," Trump cited Buyer's career as a judge advocate general in the Army and in the House that was "distinguished and highly productive." The pardon was dated Thursday and released by the White House late Friday.
Buyer said the pardon "corrects a politically motivated prosecution" and that it was "horrific to be imprisoned for a crime that I did not commit." He maintains that he is innocent.
Trump used his Truth Social media platform on May 31 to share a pair of letters requesting a presidential pardon for Buyer, a lawyer and Gulf War veteran who left office in 2011. He was a House prosecutor at Democratic President Bill Clinton's 1998 impeachment trial and in 2016 he served on Trump's transition team focusing on veterans' issues.
