Even bullish S&P 500 investors are waiting for a market correction. But it's already here for nearly two-thirds of stocks.
Roughly 300 stocks in the S&P 500 — including Trade Desk (TTD), Costar (CSGP) and Fiserv (FISV) — are down 10% or more from their 52-week highs, says data from S&P Global Market Intelligence and MarketSurge. That puts them in a correction — or worse.
Such widespread pain in the S&P 500 signals that a dreaded sell-off is already happening in slow motion. Many investors are unnerved that the S&P 500 is trading at its highest valuation since the dot-com bubble burst in 2021, based on the Shiller/CAPE PE. The measure stands at 42, close to its December 1999 peak of 44, says Nicholas Colas of DataTrek Research. Roughly a third of S&P 500 stocks are down 20% or more from their highs — putting them in bear market territory.
"Bubbles burst when real world outcomes fall short of expectations, not just in terms of corporate fundamentals but monetary and fiscal policy as well," Colas said.
Much of the concern centers on AI plays. And, to be sure, shares of AI king Nvidia (NVDA) are down more than 10% from their 52-week highs. But even more pain is being felt in other areas of tech.

Belgian comedian Noel Godin, who made a name throwing custard pies at celebrities from French film legend Jean-Luc Godard to tech ******* an Bill Gates, has died at the age of 80, his partner told AFP Monday.
Nicknamed "the Glooper" for his cries of "Gloop! Gloop!" after each strike, Godin spent more than three decades lobbing pies at rich and famous targets he felt needed bringing down a notch.
He died on Sunday morning, his partner Sylvie Broodthaers told AFP.
Describing himself as an "anarcho-confectioner," Godin began his campaign with a pie in the face of author Marguerite Duras in 1969.
His high-profile targets went on to include the future French president Nicolas Sarkozy in 1997 -- although in that case he had an accomplice lob the actual pie for fear of being recognised.

A Bloomberg report on August 18 revealed that BP plc (NYSE:BP) has become the latest foreign company to enter the Venezuelan oil trade, with the tanker Monte Lema loading 400,000 barrels of heavy fuel oil for the British energy giant. Venezuela's new petroleum minister sees her South American home not as a dilapidated former oil giant, but as an emerging energy economy ripe for U.S. and foreign investments in new oil and gas exploration, both onshore and offshore.
Paula Henao, who took over as the hydrocarbons minister in March after the forced U.S. removal of former leader Nicolás Maduro, told an overflowing Houston energy audience on Wednesday that Venezuela is much more than just its famed heavy-grade crude oil. There are more than 916 exploration opportunities awaiting foreign investment, she said, including natural gas and other untapped oil basins. She cited an estimated 192 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves, as well as the country's world-leading proven oil reserves of more than 300 billion barrels.
"It's an entire world waiting to be discovered, just waiting for us to reach these agreements so we can develop these new areas," Henao said in Spanish to the crowd at the posh Post Oak Hotel in Houston.
Henao and leaders of the Venezuelan state oil company, PDVSA, were in Houston this week for meetings and a showcase event in advance of a bigger Venezuela Energy Week in February in Caracas.
"Go to Venezuela to invest, go to Venezuela to develop businesses there," said PDVSA Vice President Jovanny Martinez, also speaking in Spanish. "We are at the right place at this historical moment. We have the energy that the world requires."

Following the Washington-led removal of Venezuela's previous president, Nicolás Maduro, from office on 3 January this year, U.S. firms are pushing hard to keep increasing oil production from the hydrocarbons giant, in line with President Donald Trump's grand plans for the country within his new world order. The foundation for such output increases is extremely solid, as Venezuela still holds the world's largest proven crude reserves -- roughly 303 billion barrels, or about 17% of the global total. Most of this is extra-heavy crude oil from the Orinoco Belt that requires more technical expertise to handle than lighter grades but is cheaper to lift and often more profitable to process, with the challenge lying in transporting, upgrading, and refining it, not extracting it. Moreover, of its 14 supergiant oil fields, 11 retain more than half of their original reserves. Once up and running to something approaching full capacity, the country is to play a key role in the 'Americas' geographical sphere -- one of three such regions, as delineated recently in the U.S.'s '2025 National Security Strategy' -- so where are we now in this development arc following comments in the past week or so from U.S. oil and gas giant, Chevron?
According to chief financial officer Eimear Bonner, during a recent earnings call, the U.S. supermajor has increased its oil production in Venezuela from 40,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 250,000 bpd over the past few years. And, based solely on its three current joint ventures in the country, output has risen over just the past six months by 12% year on year to 280,000 bpd. This followed the mid-April announcement of an **** et-swap agreement with Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA), under which Chevron received an additional 13.21% interest in the Petroindependencia joint venture, increasing its total stake to 49%. The U.S. firm's other two joint ventures include Petropiar (in which a Chevron subsidiary holds a 30% interest and has the rights to develop the adjacent Ayacucho 8 area in the Orinoco Oil Belt), and Petroindependiente (in which it has a 25.2% non-operated interest in the west of the country). Looking ahead, Bonner added that Chevron expects its production across Venezuela to rise by 50% between now and the end of 2028, which would bring the total up to 420,000 bpd. Across the country as a whole, July saw average crude oil production by Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA and its foreign partners increase by 20,000 bpd to 1.21 million bpd, according to Ministry of Hydrocarbons data. Petar Musa reclaimed the Golden Boot presented by Audi lead in spectacular fashion.
His 14th goal of the season, a perfectly placed strike from the top of the box, lifted FC Dallas to a 2-1 win over Texas rivals Austin FC. The goal moved Musa one ahead of New York City FC's Nicolas Fernández Mercau in the Golden Boot race.
Musa's goal also secured Dallas a crucial Copa Tejas rivalry win, pushing them into fifth place in the Western Conference.
As usual, their All-Star striker is serving as the talisman.

The hosts claimed an early lead but Inigo Perez took a point on his debut as coach of the Yellow Submarine after Pape Gueye and Nicolas Pepe pulled the visitors level against the hosts from Cantabria.

On Saturday, Rocco Reitz was rewarded for his hard work in pre-season. In the 58th minute of the Telekom-Cup, our summer signing was brought on for Nicolas Seiwald and played his first half an hour in an RBL jersey.
Rocco's debut was a highlight of the match which ultimately ended in a 3-1 defeat for the Red Bulls. "I was really happy to be back on the pitch and doing what I love," said the 24-year-old after the final whistle in an interview with MagentaTV.
The midfielder who joined Leipzig from Borussia Mönchengladbach had a delayed start to his first pre-season at RBL due to an illness. In the past few weeks, he's been gradually making up ground. His cameo against Bayern was his first real test. "The half an hour was quite a challenge, it went back and forth a lot," explained Rocco, before adding, "It's always good to go toe-to-toe with the best in the business."
Our number 20 has seen a lot of progress with a week to go before the start of the season, but also recognised that there is room for improvement. "We did a lot of things better compared to the previous friendlies. We were calm in possession and our gegenpressing was a bit better. There are still a couple of areas where we can improve, like our decision making among other things. But we're on the right track."
This Saturday, the first competitive fixture of the new season is on the agenda for Leipzig. At 18:00 CEST, RBL will travel to take on Regionalliga outfit Eintracht Trier in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. His year could hardly have gone much better so far. "Only" the World Cup ******* le would probably have been the cherry on top of his career cream cake. After all, after Facundo Medina finished as World Cup runner-up with Argentina at the tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico, he has now moved to the Bundesliga, joining Bayer Leverkusen for 20 million euros.
As a child, the now 27-year-old surely could never have dreamed that he would one day cost that much money. Medina grew up in Villa Fiorito, a poverty-stricken neighborhood in the greater Buenos Aires area. "I was born just eight blocks from Diego's (Maradona, editor's note) former house. His presence is everywhere there. Fiorito is a neighborhood that literally breathes football," the Argentine said during the World Cup. Like his idol, he grew up playing on dirt pitches.
To help his family and earn money, he collected cardboard. In an interview with ESPN, he looked back on that time: "I had other jobs. You had to survive in the neighborhood. I had to get a cart and work, like everyone else. I went out collecting cardboard with my uncles and the whole family." He said it was family work from Monday to Friday. Looking back, he said that he and his family always had something to eat, but they still had to work hard for it: "We would leave around four or five in the afternoon and come back around nine or ten at night."
That he has to work hard for his success was also clear at the start of his professional career. When River Plate released him in 2018, he moved to CA Talleres and made his breakthrough there. Via RC Lens, the defender eventually made the jump to Europe and fully developed into a key player at Olympique Marseille. This summer, he was finally rewarded with a place at the World Cup.

Under Washington's crippling oil embargo against Cuba, an exception that allows U.S. firms to export fuel to private Cuban businesses has kickstarted a chaotic black market and pried the lid off an energy sector tightly controlled by the state ever since Dwight Eisenhower was in the White House.
Oil shipments from Cuba's traditional suppliers Venezuela and Mexico ended abruptly after the U.S. ousted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in January. U.S. Coast Guard cutters patrol the waters off Cuba, while sanctions and threats have dissuaded tankers from even setting sail.
The embargo has hobbled essential state-run services like the healthcare system, public transport and schools. Tosin Adarabioyo has labelled his Chelsea colleague Mykhailo Mudryk a "freak," and the center-back confessed he isn't remotely shocked his teammate has preserved his physical conditioning throughout the past 20 months.
Mudryk returned to action for the Blues on Wednesday for the first time since November 2024, coming off the bench during the closing stages of the 1-0 loss to Juventus at Hong Kong's Kai Tak Stadium. The FA announced last week that Mudryk's anti-doping disciplinary case had been resolved.
Manager Xabi Alonso informed Mudryk before kickoff that he intended to deploy him for the final 10-15 minutes. Leandro Pineda, Maxwell Romero Jr. and Sam Petersen each hit their first Triple-A home run, while Jackson Kent allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings as the Rochester Red Wings rolled to an 8-1 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Wednesday night at PNC Field.
Kent allowed three hits and struck out five to improve to 8-3 on the season.
