The 2026 midterm elections was a decisive victory for Democrats, who won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. With Republicans retaining the White House, the election results bring a period of divided government starting in January.
Wall Street's initial reaction has been enthusiastic. As of this writing (Nov. 4), the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI) surged more than 1,500 points during morning trading, while the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) also rallied.

Beneath the broader market's gains, investors are undoubtedly repositioning their portfolios. Artificial intelligence (AI) hyperscalers like Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms are surging, while many semiconductor stocks and data center operators are plunging.
The contrasting performance reflects uncertainty about how the election could affect AI and adjacent industries. For investors wondering whether to change their portfolios following the election, Warren Buffett's advice about mixing politics and investing is particularly relevant.

Although the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) has been the hottest trend in decades on Wall Street, it's not the only catalyst lifting the broader market. Investor euphoria for high-profile stock splits has also played an important role.
A stock split allows a public company to alter its share price and outstanding share count by the same factor without affecting its market cap or underlying operating performance. Within a span of just eight days, two historic AI stock splits were announced by Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) and Sandisk (NASDAQ:SNDK), which are set to undertake their first-ever forward splits, respectively.

Until recently, Mark Zuckerberg's Meta was the only member of the "Magnificent Seven" that hadn't split its stock. That changed with the company's Oct. 21 quarterly report, which unveiled the creation of a new class of stock.

For the first time in 60 years, Warren Buffett watched someone else lead Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE: BRKA)(NYSE: BRKB) annual meeting. That doesn't mean Buffett was absent from that May 2 event, though. He was there on the sidelines and had time to field questions in an unofficial capacity.
In a CNBC interview that day, Buffett was asked whether stocks felt expensive. His answer was that he had never seen people more in the mood to gamble and that "prices for an awful lot of things will look very silly."

Warren Buffett is and always has been a long-term investor. But if things are about to get "silly," should investors adjust their portfolios?
More than 1,000 new exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have launched in 2026 so far. A lot of them involve leverage, ultra-short-term options, and ridiculously high yields. In other words, they're the kinds of products that don't resemble anything that Warren Buffett would consider.

I've been writing about Social Security for well over a decade. And I've found that there's a lot of misinformation about the program and how it works.
Some people, for example, think all Americans are entitled to Social Security once they reach a certain age and that everyone receives the same monthly benefit. In reality, Social Security benefits are earned by paying taxes on wages. And the amount of Social Security you get in retirement depends on your earnings history and your filing age.

Another big Social Security myth I hear all too often is that it's more than feasible to retire on those monthly benefits alone. I'm here to tell you that if you go that route, you might sorely regret it.

Tuesday's midterm vote is behind us, and chip stocks came into it bruised. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SMH) ended Election Day at $518.52. That was around 22% under the fund's highest close ever, set on June 22, but it still left the fund up about 44% in 2026.
What have chip stocks usually done over the 12 months after a midterm vote?

I went back to the PHLX Semiconductor Index, a widely watched chip benchmark with daily data going back far enough to cover the past eight midterms. For each one, I compared the index's close on Election Day to its close on the same date a year later, on price alone.
The record's impressive. But I think where chip stocks start this time is a reason to lower expectations.

Stocks soared Wednesday as investors reacted to a clean sweep by Democrats in the midterm election.
Stocks were initially down when results started to roll in Tuesday night, in part due to fears of a data center crackdown, but futures turned green later in the evening, and all three major indexes soared on Wednesday.

It wasn't immediately clear why stocks jumped on the results, though it appeared to be a combination of several factors. Investors were glad to see pushback on the Trump administration validated, including on inflation and the war in Iran. Investors tend to like a divided government, and with Democrats gaining solid control of both houses of Congress, they clearly have that. Finally, President Trump was surprisingly conciliatory, saying he would "absolutely accept the results of the election," and was willing to work with Democrats, which could pave the way to a productive Congressional term.
Among the winning sectors today was housing, which has languished over the last two years due to high mortgage rates and weak housing turnover. The State Street SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF (NYSEMKT:XHB) closed up 5.4%, reaching its highest point in more than two months, while Home Depot (NYSE:HD) and Lowe's (NYSE:LOW), the two leading home improvement retailers, were up as well. Home Depot finished up 6.5%, and Lowe's jumped 7.5%.

Over the last few years, the stock market has become concentrated among a relatively small cohort of technology companies. These companies have an unusually strong influence over the direction of the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC), making investor sentiment toward artificial intelligence (AI) particularly important to the broader market's performance.
As of Nov. 3, a little more than one-third of the S&P 500 is composed of the "Magnificent Seven" stocks -- Nvidia, Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Tesla. This concentration is important heading into Friday, Nov. 6, when two potentially market-moving events are scheduled.

The October jobs report is scheduled to publish before the opening bell, while billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk will take the stage at a major investment conference later that afternoon. Here's why I'm predicting Nov. 6 could become a consequential trading day on Wall Street.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) will release the October employment report at 8:30 a.m. ET on Nov. 6. This report provides investors with several important economic indicators, including nonfarm payroll growth, the unemployment rate, and changes in average hourly earnings. These figures can offer clues about the health of the American economy and the Federal Reserve's next moves on interest rates.

The AI building boom just ran into politics, or at least the stocks behind the buildup did. On Wednesday, the day after Democrats won control of the House and Senate, investors dumped the companies that build data centers and supply their power and cooling equipment. By midmorning, Modine (NYSE:MOD) was down about 24%, Sterling Infrastructure (NASDAQ:STRL) about 19% and Comfort Systems USA (NYSE:FIX) about 16%. Even the industry's giants weren't spared: Vertiv (NYSE:VRT) and GE Vernova (NYSE:GEV) were each down roughly 11% to 12%. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 climbed about 2%.
So, what spooked investors? And is this the kind of drop worth buying?

A Democratic House was largely expected, so much of that was largely priced in, but one of the bigger shocks came from Texas, where Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Gov. That's a big deal, because Texas holds about 27% of the data center capacity planned in the U.S., according to Wells Fargo.

The "Magnificent Seven" was popularized in 2023 by Bank of America ****** yst Michael Hartnett as a term for seven rapidly appreciating tech-focused growth companies. Throughout the day, Americans from across our great nation have headed to the polls or mailed in their ballots to make their voices heard. According to popular prediction market Kalshi, as of 8:50 p.m. ET, the odds have skyrocketed to better than 99% that Democrats will retake control of the House of Representatives. Regardless of what happens in the Senate, President Trump would be working with a divided Congress come January 2027.
Based on what history tells us, a split Congress can significantly alter annualized return expectations for the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI), S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC), and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC).

If prediction markets prove accurate and Democrats do retake one or both houses of Congress, President Donald Trump's second nonconsecutive term will mirror his first. He'll have had two years of full Republican congressional control in the first half of each term, and a divided Congress in the second half of both.

Yesterday, tens of millions of Americans made their voices heard by casting or mailing in their ballots. These votes have charted a new course for America, with Democrats taking firm control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, according to the **** ociated Press. President Trump has enjoyed a unified Republican government in the first two years of both of his nonconsecutive terms. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) (signed December 2017) permanently lowered the peak marginal corporate income tax rate to 21%, fueling S&P 500 share buybacks, while the Big, Beautiful Bill (signed July 2025) made the personal income tax bracket reductions from the TCJA permanent.

Two years ago, it seemed like ******* ody wanted to touch Intel (NASDAQ: INTC). The company that basically invented the modern chip industry had turned into its own cautionary tale, posting an $18.8 billion net loss for 2024 while it fell behind Nvidia in artificial intelligence (AI) and behind Taiwan's foundries in manufacturing.

Then something strange happened. The U.S. government bought a stake in Intel. So did Nvidia. So did SoftBank. Companies and governments don't usually hand over billions to a business they think is finished, and that's the real reason I think the next 14 months matter more for this stock than almost any stretch in Intel's recent history.
Turnarounds aren't real until a real, working product ships, and Intel is finally shipping. In July, the company said its newest Arizona fab had entered high-volume manufacturing on a subset of its Core Ultra Series 3 chips, known as Panther Lake, the first processor built on Intel 18A, which Intel calls the most advanced semiconductor process ever developed and manufactured in the United States. Its second-quarter 2026 release adds that the next node behind it, 18A-P, had already entered risk production, meaning Intel isn't just trying to catch up on one generation, it's trying to stay on pace for the one after. On the data center side, that same release says Intel also launched Xeon 6+, its first server chip built on 18A.
Money talks, and in 2025 three very different yet massive buyers said the same thing with their wallets. The U.S. government invested $8.9 billion in Intel common stock, structured largely out of unpaid CHIPS Act and Secure Enclave funding, in exchange for roughly 275 million shares and warrants for up to 241 million more. Nvidia added $5 billion, and SoftBank put in another $2 billion, both also in Intel common stock. None of this money really guarantees Panther Lake sells well, or that Intel's foundry business ever turns a real profit. But I think it's an odd thing to do if you think a company is circling the drain, and you don't have any faith in it.

With shares up by almost 700% over the last five years, Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) has been one of the biggest winners on the software side of the generative artificial intelligence (AI) megatrend. It has rapidly incorporated the new technology into its business model, leading to skyrocketing revenue and earnings.
That said, Palantir's stock rally has slowed over the last 12 months, leaving investors wondering whether it can return to the explosive growth it enjoyed in previous years. Let's dig into the pros and cons of the stock to decide what it might be worth by the end of 2027.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Right now, AI-hungry investors are mostly limited to the infrastructure side of the opportunity. This is where hardware companies like Nvidia and Micron build the chips that data center providers use to run and train large language models (LLMs). However, many leading consumer-facing AI software leaders are still privately held, putting them out of reach.
Palantir convincingly bucks the trend. Its business involves sifting through vast amounts of its clients' internal data to help them identify actionable insights like business trends, opportunities, and fraud. Generative AI proved highly synergistic with these tools, enabling operators to access insights via natural language prompts rather than advanced interfaces. Demand has been explosive.

Sandisk (NASDAQ:SNDK) gave investors two pieces of news on Thursday, Oct. 29. The flash memory company's fiscal first-quarter revenue grew 23% over the previous quarter to $11.0 billion. And the board approved an eight-for-one stock split, with split-adjusted trading expected to start Friday, Nov. 20.
Does a split announcement tell investors anything about where a stock heads next? I checked what happened over the year after eight big-name split announcements, measured from every stock's close on announcement day.

President Donald Trump has been in the White House for nearly six years, spanning two nonconsecutive terms. Over that time, the iconic Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI), benchmark S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC), and growth-dependent Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) have delivered well-above-average annual returns, compared to most other presidents since the late 1890s.
One of the key catalysts powering Wall Street's bull market, the artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure build-out, was well underway before Trump's second term began. But make no mistake about it: Wall Street and investors have also benefited immensely from the president's Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (signed into law in December 2017), which lowered the peak marginal corporate income tax rate to 21% (the lowest rate since 1939), fueling record S&P 500 share buybacks.

Generating $1,000 a month in dividends is a simple process but it usually requires a substantial capital outlay. The Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (NYSEMKT: SCHD) is perhaps the best dividend ETF for accomplishing this. Not only does it offer a much-above-average yield, but it's also backed by a portfolio of durable, high-quality companies.
That's exactly what you want in your portfolio, so let's run through the path for how to get there.

The Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF tracks the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index. It starts with a universe of U.S. equities that have paid dividends for at least 10 consecutive years. From there, it examines the stock's dividend growth rate, yield, and several fundamental metrics, including return on equity (ROE) and cash flow-to-debt ratio. The 100 stocks with the best combination of these factors make the cut for the portfolio.
It's the combination of dividend yield and dividend quality that makes this fund so effective. The screens act as cross-checks on each other, so investors can get the best of both worlds. Choosing stocks based solely on yield can leave investors vulnerable to yield traps or potential dividend cuts. The quality screen here helps steer clear of that and gives people a sustainable high yield along with the quality portfolio.

Bear markets are a normal part of investing in the stock market. **** ody knows when the next one will arrive, but it will eventually arrive with 100% certainty. The time to prepare is before you face the fear that comes with big market downturns. That's why you should consider owning companies like Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ), Medtronic (NYSE: MDT), Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO), and Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG).
But there are two pieces to the story here. First, they all operate in economically resilient industries. Second, they all have incredible dividend track records. Here's a quick look at each one.

To be fair, you may not be happy about paying for healthcare, since it can be expensive. But you will still pay for it because, in the most extreme cases, it can be the difference between life and death. In less extreme cases, the difference is between a better and worse quality of life, and you'll still probably pay up. The risk of not paying simply isn't worth it.
Johnson & Johnson is a good choice if you are worried about a bear market and are looking for a safe-haven investment. It is a major player in both the pharmaceutical and medical device sectors, providing diversification. It is a Dividend King, having rewarded shareholders with more than 50 consecutive annual dividend increases. And while its yield isn't exactly huge at 2%, it is roughly twice what you'd collect from an S&P 500 index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) fund. J&J isn't exactly an exciting company, but it is a reliable one.

Despite the S&P 500's (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) 13.3% gain thus far in 2026, there's still plenty bubbling beneath the surface that could trigger a sharp and sudden market crash. Stubborn inflation, the U.S. national debt sitting above $40 trillion, and fears of an artificial intelligence bubble are just a few concerns.
As one of the most successful investors of all time, Warren Buffett has some sage advice. It's found in the 1996 Berkshire Hathaway shareholder letter, which offered one of the top strategies for handling a market crash. The good news is that it can be followed before a crash even starts.

It's easy to feel panicked when the market starts tumbling, and making any kind of move, even if it's a knee-jerk reaction, can initially feel better than making no move at all. While that small voice whispering to "sell" may never go away during the initial waves of a market crash, it can be countered by being prepared in advance.
Buffett shared exactly how to counter it. In Berkshire's 1996 shareholder letter, he said, "If you aren't willing to own a stock for ten years, don't even think about owning it for ten minutes."

Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) is offering a dividend yield of roughly 6% today. That is well above the roughly 1% yield on offer from the S&P 500 index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) and the 1.4% average yield of pharmaceutical stocks. There are good reasons for the negative view of Pfizer, but investors may be ignoring the company's over 100-year history of success. Here's why you may want to consider buying this out-of-favor dividend stock while others are fearful.
Pfizer's stock rocketed higher during the coronavirus pandemic, as investors myopically focused on the company's COVID vaccine. When COVID turned out to be a less serious long-term threat than originally believed, Wall Street dumped Pfizer. At this point, the stock is down more than 50% from its 2021 high. That is a big part of the story behind the high yield.

However, there's another piece that is more fundamental to the pharmaceutical industry. Like all drug makers, Pfizer's drugs receive time-limited patent protections. When patents expire, generic versions of the medications can be produced. That generally leads to a dramatic decline in revenue from Pfizer's drugs. Right now, Pfizer is facing down some notable patent expirations. This is a completely normal dynamic in the pharmaceutical sector.
Patent expirations are why drug companies are always on the lookout for new drugs. The problem is that patent expirations follow a set schedule, but drug development does not. Pfizer's drug pipeline isn't producing major new drugs right now, and it looks like it may have to work through a period in which new drugs won't fully offset revenue lost to patent expirations. This isn't uncommon, either, but investors are likely focusing on the short term rather than the long term when it comes to Pfizer.

This has been a history-packed year for Wall Street. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI), S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC), and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) have all catapulted to several new highs, and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh was sworn in as only the 17th head of the Fed on May 22.
But the most game-changing event of them all might be Warsh and the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) kicking off only the fourth interest rate-hiking cycle of the 21st century on Sept. 16. Fed Chair Warsh and 11 other FOMC colleagues voted unanimously (12-0) to raise the federal funds target rate by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4.00%.

The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) has spent most of 2026 at or near record highs. While that's been good news for anyone invested in the index, a problem is developing beneath the surface.

Obviously, the S&P 500 is historically top-heavy right now. Tech stocks account for roughly 38% of the index, while the top 10 holdings also account for approximately 38%.

You've probably heard the cliché "it takes money to make money." And there's some truth to the premise. In the business world, you'll usually need at least a little seed capital to start.
If you're an investor with average income, however, you might be surprised how easily you could become a millionaire. And not from brilliantly lucky stock-picking, either; attempting to outperform the overall market can undermine your performance, in fact. The key, rather, is making disciplined contributions to the cause -- no matter how seemingly modest -- even when you don't want to make them. That's often when sticking with your plan helps the most.
Continue »
And $500 per month would do the trick, given enough time. Here's how, and why.
There's no denying that in the economic environment of 2026, coming up with an extra $500 per month can feel like a pretty tall order. For most households willing to buckle down on discretionary spending, though, it's possible. And if you're willing to invest that money in an S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) index fund that matches the broad market's average annual gain of 10%, in 30 years you'd be sitting on a little over $1.1 million (or slightly less if you're not contributing this cash to a tax-sheltering retirement account).

American Express (NYSE: AXP) has been a staple of Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE: BRKA) (NYSE: BRKB) portfolio for decades -- with Warren Buffett essentially completing purchases of the stock by 1995. Buffett's hand-picked successor -- Greg Abel -- expects American Express to remain a long-term compounder and a core Berkshire holding because it's a business Berkshire understands well and trusts its management team.
American Express also features a growing dividend. It doesn't raise it every year, but even during the 2008 financial crisis, when many banks and financial services companies were slashing their payouts, American Express held its quarterly dividend steady at $0.18 per share.

American Express has substantially increased its dividend since then. The next payment of $0.95 per share is payable on Nov. 10 to shareholders on record as of Oct. 9.
Here's how many shares of American Express you'd need to generate $1,000 in yearly dividends, and the three levers American Express pulls to reward long-term shareholders.
