A murder inquiry has begun after the death of a man who was bitten by a dog on a footpath in West Yorkshire.
The 55-year-old was injured in an altercation on a disused railway line off Blacker Lane in Calder Grove, Wakefield, at about 13:30 BST on Saturday. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition but died just after 19:00.
West Yorkshire Police has appealed for two people, one of whom is called Sophie, who stopped to help the injured man to come forward.
A force spokesperson said a 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and of being the owner of a dog dangerously out of control in a public place, causing injury. He remains in custody.
The dog believed to have been involved in the incident has been seized by officers.

The merger will create a publicly traded company focused on advancing Caldera's lead inflammatory bowel disease therapy, with financing expected to fund operations into 2029.
Synlogic (USOTC:SYBX) agreed to merge with privately held Caldera Therapeutics in an all-stock transaction to create a new public company.
A concurrent upsized private placement is expected to raise approximately $278 million to support development of CLD-423 through Phase 2 clinical trials.
The combined company will operate as Caldera Therapeutics and intends to list on the Nasdaq Capital Market under the ticker symbol CALD.
CLD-423 is a potential first-in-class bispecific antibody targeting TL1A and IL-23p19 for ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and other immune-mediated disorders.

The Boston Bruins hired Trent Whitfield to coach their American Hockey League team in Providence. It's a move many circled once Ryan Mougenel left for the NHL, and now it's confirmed by the team.
Whitfield was waiting in the wings for this chance to coach the P-Bruins. He was behind their bench for the past decade and coached in multiple leagues before that. Now, Whitfield is handed a tough task with the Bruins turning the page on their AHL team.
Mougenel was among the best coaches in the AHL. He built Providence into a great team over the years and had them built in his vision, as a physical and smart team that was different, yet successful. The 2025-26 team was his finest, one that finished the season with the best record in the league to earn him the AHL's Coach of the Year award.
The Bruins came up short in the Calder Cup Playoffs, losing to the Springfield Thunderbirds in a four-game series that exposed their weaknesses. That said, the season showed that Mougenel was one of the league's top coaches and deserving of an NHL promotion.

Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Gavin McKenna has yet to play an NHL game, but expectations are rising already. NHL ******* yst Carlo Colaiacovo added to the excitement with a bold prediction ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Speaking on TSN 1050 Radio's "First Up," Colaiacovo was asked what was more likely. The choices were McKenna winning the Calder Trophy or Auston Matthews finishing among the NHL's top five goal scorers.
Matthews would likely need at least 45 goals to reach that mark. Speaking about which, Colaiacovo admitted he is not convinced that will happen despite believing the captain will improve.
"Let's just reflect on what last year's goal-scoring leaderboard looked like," Colaiacovo said. "Nathan MacKinnon finished with 53 and won the Rocket. Cole Caufield had 51, Connor McDavid had 48, and then there were four players tied at 45.
"So those are the top five goal scorers. We're basically suggesting that Auston Matthews has to score 45 or more goals in the NHL next year to finish in the top five. I'm not banking on that."

An eight-year-old girl was among three members of the same family found dead in what is being treated as a double murder and suicide.
A murder investigation was launched after the three people - a 41-year-old man, a 39-year-old woman and the girl - were found at a house on the Cullybackey Road in Ballymena at 09:00 BST on Monday.
Supt William Calderwood described how emergency services were met with a "shocking scene".
The family was originally from Poland, although it is understood the child was born in Northern Ireland. The honorary consul of Poland in Northern Ireland Jerome Mullen said he had never experienced such a tragedy in his 18 years in the job.
Police have said the cause of the deaths has not been formally established and they were not seeking anyone else in relation to the deaths.

The Chicago Blackhawks will open the 2026-27 NHL season without franchise center Connor Bedard after he underwent successful surgery to repair his left shoulder.
The team confirmed the update on Wednesday, stating on X, "This morning, Connor Bedard underwent successful surgery to repair his left shoulder. We expect him to make a full recovery in an approximate timeline of four months."
Bedard suffered the injury during an offseason practice in Vancouver on July 2. The projected recovery means he will miss training camp and the opening weeks of the regular season.
The 20-year-old is coming off his best NHL campaign, leading Chicago with 75 points, including 30 goals and 45 ***** ists, in 69 games. Since being selected first overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, Bedard has produced 203 points in 219 career games and captured the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year in 2023-24.

Butler basketball is one of 12 power conference programs with a new head coach for the 2026-27 season. Former Bulldogs point guard Ronald Nored takes over a team that has finished over .500 once in the past six seasons.
As is common these days, a new coach means an almost entirely new roster. Just one returning player saw extensive court time with the Bulldogs last season. Another was lost to a season-ending injury after six games. Otherwise, it's freshmen, transfers and returning players who have seen little action.
The Athletic's C.J. Moore graded the roster reconstruction of the power conference teams with new coaches, and Butler came away with "A," along with North Carolina State, Cincinnati and Boston College.
"Ronald Nored was also very intentional in his approach, signing five freshmen and adding only transfers with multiple years left. The Bulldogs didn’t sign any big names, but they may have landed one of the more promising international prospects. Samu Adler is an 18-year-old who was the finals MVP in the top Finnish league, which includes a good number of former college stars. The league’s MVP was former Oklahoma/Oregon/Texas Tech guard De’Vion Harmon. A transfer to watch is Samis Calderon, who rarely played for Kansas as a freshman. He’s raw but has the athleticism and tools to become a really good college wing. Nored also held on to guard Jalen Jackson, who played six games before an ankle injury ended his season. With Jackson in the starting lineup, Butler was 5-1, including a neutral-court win over Virginia. He’s a veteran who could help bring along the young guys. Butler hasn’t finished above .500 in the Big East since 2019-20. If Nored can get close and provide hope for the future, that’ll be a successful first year."

Nil Calderó has terminated his contract, and Joel Montero, who played on loan at CE Manresa this season, and Arnau Coromina, who played at UE L’Escala, have also ended their **** ociation after terminating their respective contracts.

Michigan State hockey had an absolute star on their roster last year with Porter Martone leading the way for the Spartans to have another Big Ten championship season, along with a regional final run in the NCAA Tournament.
After the season, Martone signed an entry level contract with the Philadelphia Flyers, where he showed that he was one of the leagues best young players. After getting to play with the Flyers to close the season, and into the playoffs, Martone is still eligible to be a rookie in 2026-27.
With rookie eligibility, Martone is eligible for the Calder Trophy, where he is currently the betting favorite to win the rookie of the year award.

He may not have been the most heralded transfer in club history, but the minute Angeliño stepped onto the pitch in March 2024, his value was clear: he was fast, direct, and aggressive. Combined with his low center of gravity, those traits made the Spanish wing-back a nuisance to opponents and an ******* et to Roma’s attack. After surviving the De Rossi-Juric-Ranieri triumvirate, Angeliño was poised to flourish under Gian Piero Gasperino and alongside the club’s other combustible wing-back, Wesley França.
Unfortunately, that never came to pass. After missing nearly the entire 2025-2026 season due to a variety of injuries, Angeliño’s absence forced Wesley into the left wing-back role; not a catastrophic development, but hardly ideal. While we may see the Angeliño-Wesley pairing next season, the club has been intermittently linked to one of Gasperini’s former proteges, Matteo Ruggeri.
The Atletico Madrid left-back’s future is in the balance after the Colchoneros’ recent capture of Alejandro Grimaldo, who is moving from Bayer Leverkusen. According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, Atletico are likely to put Ruggeri on the transfer market, where Roma are expected to be a major suitor.

Former Scotland international and RCD Mallorca defender Alan Hutton sat down with Get Spanish Football News to discuss his time in Spain with his former team.
Can you tell me a little bit about your time at Mallorca and any memories that really stand out for you?
The whole experience was absolutely brilliant. It’s something that I’d not gone through before. In terms of going to a different country and playing. It came out the blue from an agent I knew up in Scotland. It happened really quickly. In terms of experiences, it was like night and day from England or Scotland. Its culture was very different, where we’d go train with the team and then after that we’d go down to the beach and all sit and have a laugh. It was something I’ve never experienced. There wasn’t that pressure down on your shoulder where every day people are saying things to you in the press or the media, and it wasn’t like that; it was about enjoying your football. And to have the chance to go and play at some of the stadiums, Atlético de Madrid, it was obviously the old one [The Vicente Calderón Stadium] at the time, the Mestalla, going to the Bernabéu, the Nou Camp. All these things were just incredible for me. And also the overall look at football, even though we were a smaller team, it was go and play and go and attack. You were going to Real Madrid or Barcelona, and we want to play our game. Obviously, ultimately, we were playing against top opposition. But it was what we did. And I’ve never really come across that before, to go and attack those big teams. I thought the whole experience was brilliant, and ever since then, I always go back. My brother-in-law was there two weeks ago at a Mallorca game. It made an impression on us all. It was just a brilliant time for me.
You mentioned the move came about quite quickly. How did the move first materialise, and what were your initial thoughts?
I’m going to be brutally honest with you: I didn’t know Mallorca had a team. It was an agent that I knew from Glasgow, John Viola, it was kind of out of the blue. He said, ‘I’ve got this opportunity; would it be something you fancied?’ I needed to think about it. I wasn’t playing for Aston Villa at the time, and it was coming close to the end of the [transfer] window. I looked up the team and saw that Giovani Dos Santos was there, who I played with at Spurs. I was kind of like, ‘Alright, let’s just do it. I need to go and play. Let’s just do it. It’s something totally different.’ And it happened, really quickly after that. It was just get out here, fly over, and do everything we need to do. And as soon as I got there, I just felt at home. Everybody was really good around me. The staff that was looking after me. Everything was just perfect, and I felt that this was the place to be.

Look, I know it's an ostentatious display of obscene wealth, but I think we should be circumspect about billionaires and their love of extreme sports. If they want to fill their days with caldera diving and fjord sledding, maybe we should just let them have their fin. I mean fun.
