Matt LaFleur spent his entire offseason promising Green Bay Packers would finally learn how to finish games. Sunday in Minneapolis put that promise to the test immediately. The Packers built a healthy second-half lead, the same type of cushion that slipped away repeatedly last season, and it vanished again. What happened next, both on the field and in the press conference that followed, left fans furious.
Green Bay looked in control for most of Sunday's opener at U.S. Bank Stadium. The Packers led 22-10 in the third quarter behind Jordan Love, who threw for 387 yards and two touchdowns. Then everything unraveled. Minnesota Vikings scored 29 unanswered points in the second half, turning a comfortable lead into a 39-22 defeat.
The turning point came in the fourth quarter. With Green Bay up 25-17 after a penalty wiped a Vikings field goal off the board, LaFleur chose to go for it on fourth-and-1 instead of taking the points. Love was stopped on a quarterback sneak, and Minnesota took over on downs. The Vikings never let go from there.

Love was sacked four times after halftime, lost a fumble and threw a tipped interception during the fourth-quarter collapse. Twelve Packers penalties for 98 yards, several on Minnesota's go-ahead drive, compounded the damage.

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) -- Richwoods had a big comeback win against Mohamet-Seymour in flag football, avenging a one-point loss from last season. The Bulldogs led the Knights 22-18 with six minutes left in the game, but Richwoods scored a pair of late touchdowns. The go ahead touchdown game with Anjaliyah Adams for the go ahead touchdown to put the Knights up 24-22 and then Acosia Morris would put the game away in the final minute with a rushing touchdown as Richwoods defeated Mahomet-Seymour 30-22.
In other flag football action Normal Community had a big 19-12 win over Joliet Catholic. Bailey Engel continued to chuck the ball all over the gridiron as she had a couple more touchdown passes.
In volleyball Limestone was at the Lincoln Invitational looking to win the tournament for the second consecutive year, but the Rockets fell in three sets to O'Fallon.
Washington competed in the Williamsville Invitational where the Panthers took down the host school in straight sets.
Peoria High hosted the First To The Finish cross country meet that saw more than 200 schools and nearly 5,000 runners competing. In the girls class 1A run Stark County's Dusti Smith finished in second place while Eureka was the team champ. On the boys side Stark County's Evan **** loch was the star as he finished in first place with a time of 14 minutes and 57 seconds.

The San Francisco 49ers defense was on the field first, and it didn't take long for Fred Warner and Nick Bosa to make an impact.
Bosa hit Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford on his first dropback. He followed that up with a tackle for loss on the ensuing drive. Warner broke up the intended pass to Puka Nacua.
After Deommodore Lenoir made a tackle, the Rams went three-and-out.
Brock Purdy used his shiny new toy on his first third down of the game. Evans beat Quentin Lake for a seven-yard reception to move the sticks. It came after an inexplicable drop.
Purdy played with fire on the first drive, after a Drake Maye impersonation. Purdy threw off his back foot, and the throw was nearly intercepted just shy of the end zone. Thankfully, Trent McDuffie landed out of bounds.

It was a tumultuous night for William Byron at the Darlington Raceway in the Cook Out Southern 500. The driver of the No. 24 was forced to exit the race prematurely in the final stage after his engine expired, resulting in a 37th-place finish.
Byron, who has failed to win in 2026, entered the NASCAR Cup Series Chase 13th in the standings. Following a tough result on Sunday night at Darlington, the Hendrick Motorsports driver finds himself at the bottom of the Chase in the 16th position.
Moments prior to Byron's motor blowing, the North Carolina native triggered a caution after spinning out due to a tire failure.
Byron was having a solid run at "The Track Too Tough to Tame" for most of the evening. The 28-year-old placed ninth in Stage 1 and eighth in Stage 2, aiming to put together a quality run to kick off the Chase. Yet, things were going well until they weren't.
Byron's tire failure happened during the final stage as his Valvoline Chevrolet went sliding through turns 3 and 4, which brought out the caution on Lap 315. On the subsequent restart, Byron suffered an engine failure, forcing him to take his HMS machine behind the wall.

Taylor Fritz was unable to explain how he let a two-set lead slip against Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo as he became one of six top-10 seeds to be eliminated from the men's draw in the first week of the US Open.
The American ninth seed was in complete control and went an early break up in the third set, only for 24th seed Cerundolo to produce a shock 3-6 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-4 win to reach the fourth round.
Less than an hour later, fifth seed Flavio Cobolli of Italy fell to a 7-6 (7-4) 3-6 0-6 3-6 defeat by Belgium's Alexander Blockx, opening up the men's draw even further.
However, German top seed Alexander Zverev did survive. The French Open champion won 6-2 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 against Chilean 25th seed Alejandro Tabilo to move into the last 16.
"I don't even know what to say," Fritz said. "I don't really want to talk to anybody, see anybody.

One week to the day after White cryptically dropped financial numbers for Dana White's Contender Series' all-time pay leader among fighters who never contended for a UFC ****** le, the UFC CEO was asked if he could confirm Holland that is indeed the man he previously referenced.
"I never said it was Kevin Holland that was the $11 million man, but Kevin Holland has done pretty well," White told reporters including MMA Junkie at a post-fight news conference at Meta APEX. "I love Kevin."
Smiling through much of his answer, White detailed his long-standing professional relationship with Holland.
"You know the whole history with me and Kevin," White said. "I didn't pick him. I said he had a big mouth and he should've focused on whatever. We were in matchmaking one day. I don't remember who fell out. It was Thiago (Santos' opponent). I said, 'Call Big Mouth and see if Big Mouth will take the fight.' I'll never forget the March 2024 fight between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jr. at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. I sat in press row next to long-time boxing journalist Michael Woods and scored the fight 8-4 in favor of Roach. It seemed everyone in the vicinity agreed, but we all knew something strange could happen, and it did. Davis escaped with a draw.
There was so much wrong about that decision. First, the scorecards shouldn't have been that close and second, Davis should have be ruled down in the ninth round when he took a knee because something was in his eye. Had that been scored a knockdown, Roach would've won — even with the questionable scorecards. I had a chance to speak with legendary referee Jack Reiss about this instance and others. According to Reiss, the Tank-Roach fight led to a major change in the way boxing matches will be officiated. Let's talk boxing.

Bundesliga newcomers Elversberg kick-started their first top-flight campaign in style, stunning 2023-24 champions Bayer Leverkusen in a dominant 3-2 home victory on Saturday.
Lukas Petkov and American striker Cole Campbell scored within 60 seconds of each other to put Elversberg 2-0 up before the 10-minute mark.
David Mokwa added another early in the second half. Leverkusen's Patrik Schick and Christian Kofane scored late, but it was not enough to prevent a famous victory for the minnows.
Elversberg has a population of just 13,000, making it the smallest town ever to have a German top-flight side.
Just 9,307 fans were able to watch the surprise win in the club's home ground, which is still under construction.

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) –The Mountain West Conference has officially made its stance on the ongoing courtroom battles across the country between high school Class of 2022 football players seeking a fifth season of eligibility and the NCAA.
On Thursday, Aug. 27, the MW followed the P4 conferences' lead in prohibiting "professional athletes" from competing in the league. The conference's statement read as follows:
"Consistent with NCAA eligibility standards, the Mountain West Board of Directors has unanimously adopted a Conference rule prohibiting professional athletes from competing in the sport of football."
"Under the rule, a student-athlete shall be ineligible to represent a Mountain West institution in football if the individual: declares for a professional sports league draft and does not timely withdraw; appears on the roster of a professional sports league; or signs a contract with a professional sports league to provide athletic services. Any student-athlete who meets one or more of these criteria shall be deemed ineligible for football competition at a Mountain West member institution."

Jayden Oosterwolde is having the second stage of his medical with Roma on Wednesday, but there are growing reports that there are concerns about the injury that the Dutchman suffered in a recent Champions League qualifier with Fenerbahce.
Roma and Fenerbahce have shaken hands over a season-long loan deal with a potential €18m obligation to buy for versatile full-back Oosterwolde. The 25-year-old arrived in the Italian capital for his medical on Tuesday.

Jonathan David is a player Juventus want to offload during the final weeks of the transfer window, and the Canadian also wants to leave, but he wants the move to happen on his own terms.
David had always wanted to remain in Turin and believed his second season would be better. However, after failing to impress during pre-season, Juventus now believe the best option would be for him to leave the club this summer.
The attacker has attracted interest from some clubs, but not as many as he would have liked and certainly not from the top clubs in Europe. That has made David reluctant to leave Juventus despite the club's desire to move him on.
However, the arrival of Randal Kolo Muani means David could struggle for regular playing time. Juventus could also sign another striker before the transfer window closes, which would make his chances of featuring regularly even more difficult.
David has now accepted that he needs to leave the club, but he wants to have control over where he goes next. His preference is not simply to move away from Turin, as he wants to ensure that his next destination meets his expectations.

It's heartbreak for the Little Leaguers out of Bridgewater, as they fall out of the Little League World Series (LLWS) after losing to Ohio 10-0.
The boys needed a win today to stay in the tournament after their walk-off 2-1 loss on Wednesday night to New Jersey.
Ohio, however, proved to be quite the challenge, enacting the mercy rule at the bottom of the fourth inning and pitching a combined no-hitter against Bridgewater.

The San Francisco 49ers couldn't quite get out of SoFi Stadium without any injuries.
Keeping players healthy is the top priority in the preseason and head coach Kyle Shanahan had a trio of injury updates immediately following his team's 41-17 romp over the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday.
Cornerback Renardo Green left the game early with a hamstring issue. Shanahan said the team doesn't know the extent of the damage just yet.
"We'll have to get some imaging on that tomorrow to see if he pulled it," Shanahan said.
The other key injury came to reserve offensive lineman Austen Pleasants who went down with a knee injury in the third quarter. Shanahan told reporters it isn't an ACL tear, but they'll find out exactly what the injury is after imaging Friday.

The runs came early and often for the Red Sox in this one as they scored in the five of the first seven frames, including three in the opening inning to set the tone. However, the most impressive baseball of the night came in the bottom of the third.
Right after Ranger Suarez served up a grand slam to erase an early 3-0 Sox lead, Boston counterpunched and posted a pair of runs on their own. Adley Rutschman got things started with this home run.

That bomb was impressive for two reasons: First, Rutschman's struggled out of the gate in his first week in a Red Sox uniform, going 0 for his last 18 before this series started. So getting him off the schneid is an encouraging sign.
But secondly, when and how a guy breaks out of a slump tells you a little something about how useful they might be in a playoff push, and this shot checked a bunch of boxes. It was a home run, it was crushed, it tied the game, it came right after Arizona scored four runs. Lots to like there!

For the first time in decades, Memphis football is not scheduled to face a power conference opponent in 2026.
Other than 2020, when a matchup against Purdue was canceled, Memphis has played a power conference opponent in every season going back to at least 1960. That won't be the case in 2026, when the Tigers will face Boise State, UNLV, Arkansas State and UT-Martin in non-conference play.
Memphis won't play a power conference opponent in 2027, either.
"If we can get P4s to play us, we'll play them," athletic director Ed Scott said on "The Gary Parrish Show" on Aug. 18. "If I was the athletic director at certain P4s, especially in the geographic area we live in, I would not play Memphis. It's not a win-win for them like it is for us."
Football scheduling is done years and sometimes decades in advance, so Scott hasn't had much control over Memphis' future schedules. The SEC's move to nine conference games also creates a hurdle for Memphis, and it's the reason Arkansas moved a planned 2026 game to 2030.

James Palmer is headed back to a prominent national NFL television role, and his peers appear completely ready to see him back in action.
Prime Video is adding Palmer as its NFL insider for "Thursday Night Football," where he will provide reporting for the pregame and postgame shows. Palmer is expected to replace Ian Rapoport in the role, and the news quickly produced a flood of congratulations from reporters and colleagues around the league.
Few endorsements can get to the point faster than Bobby Belt.
"One of the best," Beltwrote on X after news of Palmer's move surfaced Monday.
Steve Wyche, who worked alongside Palmer during his lengthy run at NFL Network, offered an even more enthusiastic response.

On Friday, Miami Dolphins rookie wide receiver Caleb Douglas had an impressive performance in the team's first preseason game of the 2026 NFL season. On Monday, the Dolphins announced that fellow third-round pass catcher, Chris Bell, would soon join his draft-mate on the practice fields in Miami Gardens.
Bell — the second receiver drafted by Miami in the third-round of this year's selection process — was activated off of the club's active/non-football injury list this morning. The activation allows the Louisville product to begin practicing with his teammates instead of merely working off to the side like he has been doing since training camp started.
Bell tore his ACL in November of last year — causing the player who was once considered a late-first round prospect to drop all the way to the 94th overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft. In four college seasons, Bell totaled 151 receptions for 2,166 yards and 12 touchdowns.
On Monday, Bell practiced in a red non-contact jersey, so it remains to be seen when he will be cleared in full, but being able to get valuable reps with his quarterback, Malik Willis, is a positive step forward for the rookie. We will continue to keep you updated on all things Miami Dolphins as the team begins preparation for their second preseason contest taking place this Saturday against the New York Giants.

South Carolina senior transfer wide receiver Jayden Gibson and sophomore wide receiver Jayden Sellers each endured season-ending, lower body injuries this week in practice.
Gibson spent the last four seasons at Oklahoma, appearing in 22 games (one start) with 15 catches for 387 yards (25.8 avg) and five touchdowns for the Sooners.
Sellers appeared in seven games (two starts) in his first season with Gamecocks in 2025. He had 22 catches for 337 yards (15.3 avg) leading all Carolina freshmen. The Florence native had four catches for a season-high 127 yards in a win against Coastal Carolina, hauling in a 75-year touchdown pass.
"I am extremely disappointed for both of these young men," USC coach Shane Beamer said. "I know how hard each of them has worked over the spring and summer in getting ready for 2026 to help our team. I have full confidence they will both overcome the adversity they're facing, and we will help them in whatever way we can throughout the rehab process moving forward."

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — Paul O'Donnell was struggling in the marathon on Sunday morning. The Irish fans got him home.
"It was incredible, to see green and the tricolors all over the course," the Irishman said. "The support kept me going. It was much appreciated. It was just a roar, 'Go Ireland, go Paul.'"
Whether waving flags or roaring for their athletes, Irish fans have made their mark at the European championships in Birmingham. Ireland's athletes have taken note, as have broadcasters and organizers.
"It feels like a home championships," O'Donnell, who finished 43rd, told The ******* ociated Press.
The official Instagram account of the games, Birmingham 2026, posted: "Beginning to think the Irish fans are the best fans in Europe!" In another post, it added: "From Dublin to Birmingham and everywhere in between, they follow their athletes across the world, and the noise they bring is unmatched."

CHESTER, Pa. — The Maryland Charm claimed the first-ever Women's Lacrosse League Championship, 16-13, against the California Palms inside Subaru Park on Saturday.
Sydni Black was ****** ing ankles en route to Championship MVP honors, scoring four goals for a game-high five points, but she certainly wasn't alone in the ****** le triumph. Cassidy Spilis and Alex Aust Holman notched key hat tricks with precise interior finishing, Livy Rosenzweig had 13 draw controls (including 10 of the first 16) with a goal and goalie tandem Caylee Waters and Jenika Cuocco both made 8 saves to anchor a defensive effort that limited the Palms to their lowest goal total all summer.
"I mean, it's history books right there," Black told ILWomen postgame when asked what it meant to win the league's first full-season ****** le. "I think it's amazing to go down in history as the first champions. A game on ESPN and an amazing crowd with fans, it's something we'll never forget and hopefully little girls watching get inspired to continue dreaming big."
Black's night was unmistakably incredible, with each of her four scores getting better than the last. Her first-half hat trick was eye-popping matched up against one of the best defenders in the world in California's Emily Nalls, but her fourth was the highlight of the game.

There was something irrational about Barcelona signing Ferran Torres from Manchester City in December 2021.
The club were drowning in debt. President Joan Laporta had revealed only months earlier that Barça owed €1.35 billion.
Lionel Messi had departed because the club could not make the numbers on a new contract work, and La Liga had imposed a spending limit on the Blaugrana that season.
Barcelona could buy Ferran, but even registering him for the La Liga campaign required further financial manoeuvring.
Yet the Catalans found €55 million, with another €10 million potentially payable in variables, and spent it on a 21-year-old forward from Manchester City.
