When Anthony Volpe reports to the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, manager Shelley Duncan anticipates the shortstop to see some action at second base and possibly third base.
"There's a good chance of that," Duncan said. "We'll see when he gets here. Us as an organization, we'll have a plan in place for him. Anthony will be a part of that plan. We'll move forward accordingly for what's best for him and what's best for the organization."
Volpe, Jasson Domínguez, and Max Schuemann were all sent down by the Yankees on Monday following the fallout of the Trade Deadline and the promotion of top prospect George Lombard Jr. Schuemann arrived and played for the RailRiders on Wednesday night. Duncan expected Volpe and Dominguez to join the team by Friday; they had 72 hours to report.

The UIL State Executive Committee suspended Gainesville (TX) head football coach Neil Searcy for the 2026 season Thursday, Aug. 6, for a "willful decision" to violate offseason practice rules. The team has been docked four preseason practice days, from Aug. 7 to Aug. 11, and will be unable to participate in its Aug. 13 scrimmage against Frisco Legacy Christian.
Searcy, who has spent four years at the helm of the Texas program, held six one-hour workouts in May, during which athletes wore helmets and shoulder pads. He self-reported to the District Executive Committee after the Gainesville superintendent found out about the practices.
Per UIL rules, Class 4A programs are not allowed to conduct spring workouts with contact equipment.
Searcy, who was also placed on probation for three years, will retain his position as the district's athletic director. During Thursday's hearing, he apologized for a "lack of judgement."

The 2026 MLB trade deadline certainly didn't disappoint. Starting on Saturday night when Tarik Skubal joined the Dodgers, there was an avalanche of deals that spanned the final 48 hours. From a fantasy baseball perspective, the value of many players shifted over the past two days, which means that managers who react quickly can make substantial roster improvements.
Here are the details that every manager should know.
Tarik Skubal, SP, Dodgers: Although the value of Skubal couldn't go much higher, the needle is pointed up slightly by virtue of his membership on baseball's deepest roster. The Dodgers have outscored the Tigers by 67 runs this season, and the added offensive support could help Skubal secure an extra win or two down the stretch.
Freddy Peralta, SP, Rays: Fantasy managers who stubbornly held onto Peralta through four unproductive months (4.99 ERA, 1.48 WHIP) got the news they wished for when the right-hander was traded to one of the top organizations in terms of handling hurlers. The Rays' front office is well-aware that the right-hander's skills have declined — especially a strikeout rate that is 6.1% lower than last year — and surely has a plan to get him back on track. The guess here is that Peralta will be serviceable — and possibly better than that — over the final two months.

It's a payback series for the Milwaukee Brewers.
After trading for pitchers Dustin May, Jojo Romero and Antonio Senzatela near the deadline Aug. 3, the Brewers begin a four-game set at American Family Field against the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight.
The Brewers will look to avenge a three-game sweep that took place in Pittsburgh in the final series before the All-Star break. The Brewers have lost five of six games played with the Pirates this season and been outscored by a total of 18 runs. The Pirates did not face Jacob Misiorowski last month and they will miss the Brewers' ace again in this series.

The Daniel Boone Little League 12U All-Stars will represent Missouri in the Little League Baseball Midwest Region Tournament after winning the state championship with a 6-0 victory over Webb City in Columbia.
The Columbia-based team completed a 3-0 run through the state tournament, according to a community announcement. Daniel Boone allowed only one run across three games and outscored opponents 30-1 on its way to the ***** le.
The state championship sends Daniel Boone to Whitestown, Indiana, for the Midwest Region Tournament, scheduled for Aug. 7-14. The regional winner advances to the Little League Baseball World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
It marks the first time a Daniel Boone baseball team has reached the regional tournament since 2021. The appearance comes after the Daniel Boone Softball All-Stars also advanced to a regional tournament earlier this summer. Daniel Boone's most recent trip to the Little League Baseball World Series came in 2006.
"These kids earned every bit of this — three games, one run allowed and a state championship," said Jeremy Bexten, manager of the DBLL 12U All-Stars. LAS VEGAS – Down a couple of bigs, the Portland Fire had an opportunity to test the Aces' size and depth at the Michelob ULTRA Arena Tuesday night.
However, despite missing NaLyssa Smith and Cheyenne Parker-Tyus, the defending WNBA champions did not let that faze them.
Coming off the All-Star break — wounded by a 100-99 road defeat to Washington on July 22 — the Aces showed no signs of rust, particularly on offense, brushing aside the Fire, 98-83, on their first visit to Sin City.
The win clinched a season sweep of Portland for Las Vegas (19-8). It was the Aces' fourth victory in their last six games. Head coach Becky Hammon's group never trailed and led by as many as 18 points.
"Pretty good," Hammon said when asked to grade her team's return to action. "Except for that third quarter (Fire outscored the Aces 27-26), we gave up too much there, [but] pretty good. Good job; everybody is just trying to get into a flow. It's hard to replicate game flow in one day of practice, but it was a good game to kind of get back into our groove a little bit."

After a dominant run through the East Zone Tournament, the Hagerstown PONY-13 All-Stars will fly to California to play in the PONY-13 World Series in Carlsbad starting Friday, July 31.
"I don't think it will set in completely until they get out to California and see the Dominican Republic, ****** an, France, Mexico," said manager Jeff Mills. "When they start seeing these guys they get to play against, it's going to kind of hit them. But I don't think these boys will get nervous."
Hagerstown outscored its opponents by a combined 39-8 in the East Zone. Hagerstown broke a 4-4 tie with a pair of runs in the sixth inning of a 7-4 win over Athletix in the opener, then blew open its other two games with 10-run innings while defeating the Ohio Prospects 16-1 and Athletix 16-3 in the ****** le game.
"They played great the whole weekend," Mills said. "They're very mature for their age. They never got down at any point in the tournament, just stayed strong. The pitchers threw great. ****** ody had a really rough outing. Defensively, there were only two or three errors. They're solid the whole way around.

LOVES PARK, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Through two games, Team USA is making life in WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup group play look easy. The USA had outscored its opponents 46-7.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The Savannah Steel lost, 86-74, to the Charlotte Crown, which extended the worst losing streak in franchise history, on Thursday at Enmarket Arena.
Savannah played well in the first half, leading 44-37 at the break. However, in the second half, Charlotte outscored Savannah, 49-30.
Zee Spearman, who played 26 minutes coming off the bench, led the team in scoring with 27 points.
The Steel did not shoot well from behind the 3-point line. They only made two of their 12 attempts.
Savannah has not won a game since they defeated the Greensboro Groove at home, 79-58, on June 27.

FORT DODGE − In the new era of double elimination at the Iowa high school state softball tournament, No. 1 seed Adel-De Soto-Minburn still left no doubt, going undefeated at the tournament on its way to a state ***** le.
The Tigers ended a dominant, wire-to-wire run to their first-ever state ***** le with a 6-0 win over Raccoon River Conference foe Carlisle on Thursday, July 23. Starring in the effort were pitcher Lauren Hagedorn and catcher Kinzie Maxwell. Hagedorn gave up just four hits and conceded no runs in the circle, while Maxwell was 3-for-3 at the plate with a single, double, a home run, two RBIs and a walk.
From the first round to the state ***** le game, the Tigers went 4-0, outscoring their opponents 29-6 over the week in Fort Dodge. ADM had not lost since June 16, ending the campaign on a 24-game win streak. The AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays (59-42) will look to complete a four-game sweep of the struggling Toronto Blue Jays (46-56) this afternoon. It's that time of year again for the talented girls from Toms River to show their skills on the national stage.
The Toms River Little League softball team repeated as state champions on Sunday with an emphatic 9-3 victory over Waterford. It was an impressive undefeated run through the state tournament, as those three runs were the only ones allowed as Toms River outscored opponents 20-3 across three wins.
With the state ******* le in hand, Toms River will represent New Jersey in the Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament in Bristol, Connecticut that will be broadcast on ESPN starting Saturday.
In addition to New Jersey, the region also includes Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, Washington and Maryland.
The double-elimination tournament will finish with the ESPN broadcast of the final Thursday, July 23. The other games will be on on ESPN+ and ESPN2.

Golden State handled the Thunder with ease, outscoring them in every quarter and cruising to a 104-79 win. Nebraska had six future Huskers compete this weekend at the U.S. Marine Corps Junior National Championships — the largest wrestling tournament on the planet in Fargo, N.D. — and they returned with an individual ****** le and two more podium finishes.
Five members of Nebraska's giant 2026 signing class competed this weekend in addition to Nebraska's lone 2027 commit Mac Crosson out of Iowa.
The incoming depth at the middle weights was on full display with all three All-Americans projected from 149 through 165 pounds in college.
One of the standouts of the whole tournament, Davis Parrow started strong and finished when he needed it to win a Junior Fargo National Championship. Parrow went 7-0 over the weekend with five wins coming via technical superiority — he outscored his opponents 67-12 along the way.
Parrow started his tournament with a pair of wins via tech on Day 1 — 10-0 and 11-0. He spent a total of just 2 minutes, 17 seconds on the mat on Friday.

Center Rienk Mast posted 16 points and 11 rebounds and swingman Taevion Kinsey added 16 points to lead the Pacers to a 99-93 win over the Cavaliers at the Pavilion in Las Vegas on Friday in the first NBA Summer League game of the season for both teams.
Forward Jalen Slawson added 15 points, six rebounds, five ***** ists and five blocks for the Pacers. Guard Taelon Peter scored 13 points and forward Keion Brooks Jr. added 11. Guard Meleek Thomas and forward Nae'Qwan Tomlin led the Cavaliers with 20 points each. Guard Malakhi Branham added 15 points.
The Pacers and Cavs both had a brutal first quarter with evident jitters as both struggled to make shots and take care of the basketball. Cleveland led 14-11 after the first quarter as the Pacers got a few buckets from center Rienk Mast but little else.
But the the Pacers combined for 64 points in the middle two quarters, outscoring Cleveland 32-15 in the third to take a sizable lead heading into the fourth. A big part of what sparked the revival was the play of point guards Braden Smith and Yuki Kawamura, and the fact that the Pacers didn't have a problem putting both on the floor at the same time. That obviously made them small in the backcourt as Smith is just 5 foot 10 and Kawamura is 5-7, but they're both so good at passing the ball and getting it ahead that they made the pace of the game work for them.
Smith finished with just five points on 1 of 8 shooting including 1 of 5 from 3 but he had eight rebounds, four ***** ists and three steals. Kawamura had eight points on 3 of 5 shooting and four ***** ists, but their impacts went beyond just the counting stats as they raised the level for everyone else on the floor. As ***** istant coach Johnny Carpenter said about Kawamura before leaving for his job in Milwaukee, Kawamura and Smith both force everyone around them to move more when they're on the floor and them being around got everyone else organized and also running hard up and down the floor looking for opportunities. Kawamura was plus-4 in his time on the floor though Smith was minus-5.

Janelle Salaün scored 26 points as the Golden State Valkyries beat Toronto Tempo 83-75 for their sixth straight win, a franchise record and first victory over Toronto.
Golden State led 44-31 with 8:55 left in the third quarter, but Toronto responded with a 15-2 run to take the lead. Julie Allemand's jumper put Toronto ahead, and Maria Conde's 3-pointer boosted their lead. Toronto was ahead 59-57 entering the fourth, and Golden State finished on a 26-16 run to win.
Valkyries coach Natalie Nakase said adversity has become a theme for her team lately.
"Playing through adversity has been the key. The last two games, specifically, we didn't start out really well," Nakase said. "The second unit came to life again, so credit to them for staying ready. That to me is the biggest takeaway right now. We need everybody."
