The energy sector in 2026 is experiencing a split-margin scenario that few investors are pricing cleanly. Even though the broader market views the sector as mature and low-growth, refining margins remain significantly higher than their typical mid-cycle range.
Chemicals, on the other hand, are only now recovering from some of their lowest margins in years, with the Chemical Manufacturing Industry posting an EBITDA margin of 16.86% in the year leading up to Q2 2026.
Meanwhile, renewable diesel, which has long been a burden on integrated energy earnings, is moving from below break-even to mid-cycle profitability, thanks to a regulatory reset rather than increased demand. This comes as S&P Global reported that the applicable biomass-based diesel volume requirement has been substantially raised from 5.42 billion gallons in 2025 to 9.07 billion gallons in 2026.
Only a handful of companies sit at the center of all three cycles simultaneously. That's why Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) is worth a deeper study. It isn't a pure refiner, a pure chemicals operation, or a pure renewables gamble, but rather a company whose near-term earnings potential depends on three distinct margin recoveries occurring nearly in sync.
The refining rebound is already quantifiable as PSX's realized refining margin increased by 48% to $10.11 per barrel in Q1 2026, from $6.81 the previous year, while crude capacity utilization increased to 95% from 80%. This lifted the refining business from a $937 million adjusted loss in Q1 2025 to a $208 million adjusted profit, bringing overall adjusted EPS to $0.49, above the Wall Street forecast of a $0.40 per share loss.

The IPL 2027 trade window has thrown another curveball around Hardik Pandya's future, with Delhi Capitals now stepping into the picture after earlier reports suggested his proposed switch to Chennai Super Kings had stalled.
According to reports from Times of India, Delhi Capitals are now the front runners in the race to snap up the Mumbai Indians captain.
DC are reportedly willing to let go of both captain Axar Patel and opening batter Prithvi Shaw as part of a package to bring the current Mumbai Indians skipper into their fold.
What catches people off guard in this whole story is the timing. Delhi Capitals had barely finished celebrating the return of Rishabh Pant from Lucknow Super Giants once IPL 2026 ended, and now they're already chasing another marquee name.
The franchise reportedly views Hardik as someone capable of strengthening their batting and bowling units simultaneously, while also bringing genuine leadership experience to the dressing room.

Circle—the company behind USDC (the digital dollar used by millions worldwide for payments, savings, and international transfers)—just bought the blockchain patent library IBM spent more than a decade building. The deal, announced July 27, hands Circle over 1,000 blockchain patents issued by IBM worldwide.
Patents are legal rights that give the holder exclusive control over a specific invention. If you hold a patent on a method for processing transactions on a blockchain—the shared digital ledger where crypto activity is permanently recorded and can't be altered—you get to decide who else uses it and on what terms. IBM had been building that kind of leverage since its mid-2010s enterprise blockchain push.
By December 2025, patent ******* ytics firm PatSnap credited IBM with 790 U.S. blockchain patents—more than any other American company, with Bank of America a distant second at roughly 200. Circle, which received its first-ever patent in December 2023 (covering parallel blockchain data processing—a technique for verifying multiple groups of transactions simultaneously), went from essentially zero to the top of the U.S. rankings overnight.
"The portfolio comprises over 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents worldwide, spanning foundational blockchain technology, banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations," Circle said in its official announcement.
Circle plans to put them to work across its entire stack. "The expanded IP position directly supports Circle's foundation for building the internet financial system, including USDC, Circle Payments Network, Arc, and a growing suite of onchain products and agentic financial tools," the company added. Arc is Circle's own payment-focused blockchain built for institutional finance. The agentic tools are AI-powered software programs that can execute financial transactions autonomously—no human required for each step.

Many people end up working until their 60s or beyond because they have no choice. But you may find that retiring at 55 is more ideal for you because it gives you a fairly lengthy career while also allowing you to exit the labor force at a time when your health might still be great.
If your goal is to retire at 55, you'll need to start working toward it at a young age. Here are three things to do early in your career if you want to be able to stop working at 55.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Developing good savings habits early on could lead to a large nest egg by your mid-50s. If you want to retire at 55, begin funding an IRA or 401(k) as soon as you have your first steady paycheck.
It's OK if you can only swing modest contributions early on in your career, especially if you're simultaneously trying to build an emergency fund and pay off student loans. The key is to start saving for retirement from as young an age as possible so your money has time to grow.

Call it a B-spec, call it a heavily revised AMR26, call it whatever you want – what Aston Martin rolled out at the Hungaroring for the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix is, by any reasonable engineering standard, a new Formula 1 car. Sixteen separate components were declared upgraded, mechanics broke FIA curfew to get both cars fitted in time, and the team reportedly flew spare parts to Budapest just to guarantee Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll could each run the full package. That is not a development update. That is a rebuild.
The backstory is by now well-documented and not particularly flattering. Adrian Newey didn't get serious work underway on the AMR26 until mid-March 2025, and the wind tunnel didn't see a model until mid-April – three months behind rivals who were already deep into the new regulatory cycle. The car that arrived at pre-season testing in Barcelona was overweight, paddock insiders estimated by somewhere between 10 and 15 kilograms, maybe more, and the Honda power unit was generating vibrations severe enough to rattle onboard cameras loose and leave Alonso and Stroll visibly fighting the steering wheel.
At the Australian opener, Alonso qualified 2.462 seconds off the pace. Both cars retired when the vibrations damaged the battery systems. It went largely sideways from there – one point across the opening ten rounds, tenth of eleven teams in the constructors' standings, behind only the expansion Cadillac outfit.
The nose is the clearest sign of how deep the changes go. Where the original AMR26 carried a wide, blunt front structure, the Hungary version features a noticeably thinner, more tapered profile – the kind of slender nose Newey has favoured since his early Red Bull years. That change alone cascades through the entire front end: new uprights, revised aerodynamic ducting, changed actuator mounting, and a completely reworked front wing with reshaped endplates. Per Newey, the forward section of the chassis was lightened to the point that it required a full re-homologation and fresh crash testing – which, depending on your definition, crosses the threshold from upgrade to new car.
Newey himself occupies both sides of that argument simultaneously. "The main structural elements remain the same – the chassis and gearbox architecture don't fundamentally change – but we've taken weight out of both, which required re-homologating and crash testing the forward chassis," he said. So: same architecture, new crash test. Make of that what you will.

A youth softball coach was charged with simple ****** ault after a fight broke out in the handshake line following a game Wednesday night in Morris County.
The coach, 54, of Florham Park, was charged with two counts of fourth degree simple ****** ault for his role in the fight, according to the Morris County Prosecutor's Office.

Vanguard data shows typical millennial retirement balances are still modest, but time and steady saving could put $1 million within reach.
Under our estimates, a 30-year-old millennial could reach $1 million by age 65 at a 10% total contribution rate.
A 40-year-old millennial may need a total contribution rate closer to 15% to reach $1 million by 65.
For many millennials, millionaire retirement status can feel simultaneously necessary and out of reach. Living costs are high, housing remains expensive, and student debt has weighed on many savers during their prime wealth-building years.
But Vanguard's latest retirement data suggests the picture is not all bleak. Median balances are still modest, but for millennials with decades left to invest, steady contributions and compounding could make a seven-figure retirement balance possible.

PHILADELPHIA — In a near-silent, near-empty room, Zack Wheeler sauntered over to a tablet connected to the clubhouse speakers and tapped on Young Thug's landmark album "So Much Fun."
Sporting a dark gray tee emblazoned with the logo of a British animated children's show called "Number Blocks," the Philadelphia Phillies' pitcher scooped up an undersized basketball with his oversized hands and leisurely took aim at the locker room's 7-foot hoop.
It looked like a stay-at-home dad biding his time until the kids got home from school, not one of the best pitchers on Earth preparing for his next start. Nothing about Wheeler's demeanor suggested that, in a few hours, he would attempt to stymie the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers in front of 40,000.
But that's Wheeler: cool, calm, collected, in total control and fully aware of it. He is a throwback, a bulldog, unafraid to speak his mind and eager to take the ball. And now, at age 36, after a half-decade as one of the game's best pitchers, Wheeler is enjoying the best season of his career.
That Wheeler is shining is simultaneously against all odds and entirely predictable. This outwardly gruff rail of a man has been the sport's most valuable pitcher in the post-pandemic era. He is one of just four hurlers who have thrown at least 1,000 innings over that span, making his 2.83 ERA all the more impressive. And Wheeler has been even better in October, sporting a 2.18 ERA across 70 1/3 postseason innings. Since joining the Phillies in 2021, he has been the textbook definition of an ace.

Mexico's heavy-duty truck manufacturing sector showed renewed momentum in June, with production and exports rising year over year after more than a year of sluggish performance.
Manufacturers in Mexico ***** embled 15,262 heavy-duty trucks and buses during June, a 7.6% increase from the same month in 2025, according to from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) and the National ***** ociation of Bus, Truck and Tractor-Trailer Producers (Anpact).
Exports of Mexican-made trucks climbed 3.2% year over year to 12,730 units. Nearly all of Mexico's heavy-duty vehicle exports continue to be destined for the United States, making U.S. freight demand the industry's primary growth driver.
"June closed with clear signs of recovery," Anpact President Rogelio Arzate said during a news conference on June 9.
The June performance also marked the first time since August 2024 that Mexico's heavy-duty vehicle industry recorded year-over-year growth simultaneously in wholesale sales, production, exports and retail sales, according to Anpact.

Most corporate social responsibility teams — 66% — are experiencing increased demand to measure the impact of their work in 2026 compared to last year, according to a survey from the ****** ociation of Corporate Citizenship Professionals.
The report, which is the seventh iteration published by ACCP, also found that around 63% of CSR professionals surveyed faced increased demand to make the business case for corporate social responsibility in front of companies' internal stakeholders.
A record number of respondents, 64%, said they experienced burnout, up from 39% in 2025. ACCP said this spike coincided with other complexities impacting companies simultaneously, including legal compliance demands; increased adoption of artificial intelligence; restructuring of diversity, equity and inclusion objectives; and ESG reporting requirements.
Teams in charge of executing companies' social responsibility strategy and objectives have also undergone several changes in the past year. The report found that nearly two-thirds of CSR departments experienced restructuring of some kind, with 27% undergoing a change in leadership. ACCP said these shifts could make it difficult to sustain long-term strategies.

In the first big soccer broadcasting move coming off the North American World Cup, Versant has reportedly acquired rights to air Bundesliga games in the U.S.
The top German soccer league, home to European powers Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund and several USMNT stars, will receive $100 million across five years on the new deal, according to The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand. Games will be split between USA Network and Fandango, the online platform most known for publishing movie information and selling movie theater tickets.
For the past six years, Bundesliga matches have aired primarily on ESPN+ in the U.S., with a limited number set aside for ESPN linear networks. That deal earned the German league $30 million per year, according to reports from when the deal was signed.
Despite the slight downtick in revenue in moving from ESPN platforms to Versant’s, Bundesliga figures to reach a greater audience with Versant, with USA Network airing at least 30 matches and the rest airing free on Fandango, according to The Athletic and Sports Business Journal.
“The key headline for us is that we are expanding our accessibility in the U.S. while simultaneously delivering strong financial results,” Robin Austermann, an executive at Bundesliga Americas, told SBJ.

Linda Cohn spent 34 years watching the face of ESPN evolve. She has a more informed perspective on the question than most.
Appearing on Yahoo Sports Daily following her retirement from the Worldwide Leader, Cohn was asked whether Pat McAfee had supplanted Stephen A. Smith as the face of the network.
“It’s apples and oranges,” she said. “They’re totally different people, totally different shows, totally different lanes they’re in.”
The question, in her view, presupposes a hierarchy that doesn’t exist. According to Cohn, both men occupy the same rarified ******* e at ESPN simultaneously, just through entirely different avenues.
Her historical reference point for McAfee wasn’t Smith. It was Dan Patrick. Patrick built The Dan Patrick Show into a fully independent production with a loyal core crew around him, syndicated nationally and eventually acquired by NBC, without surrendering creative ownership to anyone. McAfee replicated that blueprint on a grander scale, cultivating a massive audience outside ESPN before licensing the show to the network under an arrangement that left him with complete creative control.

Some billionaires have spent the past year warning that New York City's political climate could scare away companies, capital, and high earners. But two fast-growing brands are moving in despite the noise.
Anthropic is leasing an entire 16-story office building at 330 Hudson Street in Manhattan, dramatically expanding Anthropic's New York footprint from a much smaller office (just around the corner, at 155 Sixth Avenue), and announcing the company is planning to double its workforce in the city. The Claude-maker, which had less than 500 employees in the city at the beginning of this year, expects to occupy all 16 floors of the building—enough **** e for 1,700 desks—and expects to have more than 1,000 employees by the end of the year. The company is currently hiring for roles in New York across research, engineering, policy, sales, and operations.
"New York is one of the main hubs for how AI is being put to work, and Anthropic is in the middle of it as a technology partner to the financial institutions, media companies, and cultural organizations that help define the city," Anthropic chief commercial officer Paul Smith told the New York Post in a statement. "Doubling our team here and deepening our long-term commitment to the city will allow us to sit closer to that work, and to the people driving it forward."
Simultaneously, Airbnb is making a major real estate bet on New York of its own. The company purchased 281 Park Avenue South, a six-story building in Gramercy, for $81.5 million, according to The Wall Street Journal. The building is expected to serve as a hub for Airbnb's New York-area workforce, which numbers more than 600 employees.
"New York City has been part of our story since the earliest days of Airbnb," CEO Brian Chesky said in a statement to AM New York. "This building reflects our long-term commitment to the city and will be home to one of our largest employee hubs outside of San Francisco. We're excited to keep investing in the city and the people who make it extraordinary."

A Birmingham City youth product, Donovan initially joined Brentford B on loan in January 2025, having spent the first half of that season in Sky Bet League One with Burton Albion.
After impressing in the following months, he signed for the Bees permanently that summer and was simultaneously promoted to the first-team set-up.

It wasn’t just your eyes.
Sometimes, what we feel doesn’t necessarily correspond with reality. Football is an incredibly complicated sport, and 22 players are moving simultaneously on the field at the same time, so the difference between what we observe and what’s actually happening results-wise in any given play/game/season can sometimes be stark.
This is not one of those times.
If you think the Buffalo Bills defense was lousy in late-down situations in 2025, you’re not wrong. Every third-down given up and every fourth down given away led to a collective groan on social media, in the stands, and on couches across the world amongst Bills Mafia. But it wasn’t just a vibes-related phenomenon unsupported by actual data evidence; the Bills really were bad on late downs in 2025 and it’s one of the main things new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard should be focused on as the team prepares for 2026.
Buffalo was 25th (worst) in EPA per play against their defense in late-down (defined as third and fourth downs) situations in 2025 per SumerSports. Their 0.10 mark in the metric was third-worst among playoff teams (only the Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers were worse) and it came alongside a staggering 0.64 EPA per rush against (second worst in the league next to the New York Giants at 0.75). Third and short? No problem for teams running the ball against the Bills? Fourth and inches? Basically a gimme. Whether it was 11 personnel (0.60 EPA per rush on late downs) or 12 personnel (0.77), the Bills were generally ineffective on stopping opposing offenses on third and fourth downs, in large part to their ineffectiveness against the run.

If you feel a breeze, don’t doubt yourself, it’s MLB Draft week once again. Since 2021, the MLB Draft has taken place over the All-Star Break, in an effort to combine the enhance the prestige of the event and turn the week into a baseball bonanza. It’s a move that has been lamented by scouts and front office folks, who note that the experience creates a cartoonishly packed weekend of work, however the fan experience may be more pleasantly what MLB is hoping for. This year, there are some small tweaks to make note of, and here at Lookout Landing we’ll have draft coverage rolling out all week in the leadup to Saturday and Sunday.
The majority of MLB’s All-Star Week this year will be broadcast by NBC, as well as simultaneously livestreamed by their Peacock service/app. However, the first broadcast event is the Historically Black College/University Swingman Classic Game on Friday, July 10th at 4 PM PT/7 PM ET on MLB Network and MLB.com.
The 2026 MLB Draft will occur Saturday, July 11th and Sunday, July 12th, in Philadelphia, PA as part of the All-Star Week festivities. Coverage will begin on NBC and Peacock at 10 AM PT/1 PM ET on Saturday, with rounds 1-3 being completed on day one. On Sunday, NBC/Peacock will pick things back up at 10 AM PT/1 PM ET again for rounds 4-20. Both days will also have live coverage on MLB Network and MLB.com
The Saturday outset is a tweak from years past, perhaps a slight genuflection to the requests of the clubs, moving the draft’s outset to a day slightly less packed with festivities. The MLB Futures Game will occur on Sunday, starting at 9 AM PT/12 PM ET, also to be broadcast on NBC. While it is a seven inning game, it may overlap with draft coverage, which seems likely to be pushed to MLB Network and MLB.com but is not entirely clear based on MLB’s website.
The Seattle Mariners have the 24th pick in the draft, second-to-last in the “1st round” ahead of only the Milwaukee Brewers due to their reaching of the ALCS a season ago. The Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, and New York Yankees all had their first picks dropped 10 spots as a “fine” of sorts for exceeding the second payroll tax threshold (also known as the “Competitive Balance Tax”).

Stephen A. Smith is pushing back after Emmanuel Acho called his comments about the Los Angeles Lakers’ roster “racist.”
Smith went viral on Wednesday for his reaction to the Lakers’ new core of Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves, and Walker Kessler, arguing the team couldn’t compete for a championship with an all-white group of star players and calling the lineup “White Dude Central.” The comments drew criticism from several corners of sports media, including from those like Acho, who on his show, Speakeasy, called Smith’s take “racist,” accusing the First Take host of feeding into the same sorts of stereotypes that held back Black quarterbacks in the NFL for much of the league’s history, which he said Smith would be the “first person” to call out.
“You don’t have the luxury of crying out ‘racism’ and then simultaneously spewing a racist remark. We just don’t have that luxury,” Acho said. “Contrary to Stephen A.’s belief that somebody gotta say it, ******* ody had to say it.”
So while Smith is on a scheduled break from ESPN and SiriusXM, he got back in the saddle and issued a response on his YouTube channel on Thursday.
In the video, Smith addressed Acho directly, telling the former FS1 host that he calls ******* and strikes in all situations where race and sports intersect, and defending his judgment on what is appropriate to say in those situations.
