COLUMBIA FALLS, Montana, Sept 16 (Reuters) - More than 15 years after the U.S. Supreme Court reshaped American politics with its Citizens United campaign finance ruling, Montana voters will decide this November whether to make their state the first in the nation to bar corporations from spending money on elections through a ballot initiative.
It's a test case for a novel legal strategy that sidesteps the 2010 ruling rather than challenging it head-on -- and taps into growing, bipartisan anger ‌over the pervasiveness of so-called dark money in elections.
"Americans are losing the belief that they have any influence over our politics," said Tom Moore, a lawyer with the Center for American Progress left-leaning think tank in Washington and the legal architect of ‌the movement.
With similar, coordinated efforts underway in over 30 states, Montana could help set a critical precedent, experts say, and potentially lead to another showdown at the Supreme Court. Hawaii's legislature passed a similar law earlier this year, inspired by those behind the effort here.

While Youngstown State quarterback Beau Brungard received the Stats Perform FCS National Offensive Player of the Week honor on Monday, Indiana State quarterback Elijah Owens was listed among others for honorable mention.
Brungard, a fifth-year senior, accounted for a touchdown in all eight of the Penguins' series possessions, with him at QB, in YSU's 70-13 rout of Duquesne on Saturday. He completed 20 of 23 passes for 290 yards and six TDs, while also running for two touchdowns.
Five other players received honorable mention for the weekly award, including Owens, former Sycamore running back Plez Lawrence (now at North Carolina Central), Montana running back Eli Gillman, Stonehill quarterback Jack O'Connell, and Alcorn State quarterback Jaylon Tolbert.
Owens delivered his best performance as a Sycamore in Indiana State's 42-35 win at Eastern Illinois on Saturday night. The redshirt junior quarterback threw for 284 yards, ran for 98 yards, and scored five total touchdowns (three passing, two rushing). Overall, Owens was 21-of-33 through the air for 284 yards and three passing touchdowns, while adding 18 carries for 98 yards and two additional scores.
Meanwhile, Lawrence — who played at ISU from 2023-25 and rushed for 1,164 total yards in 270 carries — ran for 210 yards and three touchdowns in North Carolina Central's 30-22 win against North Carolina A&T on Saturday in Durham. Lawrence also had a 200-plus-yard game as a Sycamore, gaining 203 yards in 29 carries at Murray State on Sept. 30, 2023.

Renée Zellweger rarely puts her private life on display, but Ant Anstead's latest family post includes several new glimpses of the actress with his youngest son.
Anstead celebrated Hudson's 7th birthday with a collection of photographs and videos from his son's life. Several feature Zellweger, including a clip of the Oscar winner and Hudson running barefoot along the beach at sunset, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Another photograph shows all three dressed up together, with Zellweger holding Hudson while wearing an orange lei, a small red top hat and pink rhinestone sunglasses. Anstead stands beside them in another lei while Hudson wears a decorated yellow crown.
Zellweger and Anstead marked five years together in April after meeting while filming Celebrity IOU: Joyride in 2021. Zellweger has spoken only occasionally about their home life, but she gave a direct explanation last year for living in Southern California near San Diego: "Because that's where my fellow lives, and his little boy."
Anstead posted the birthday collection on September 6, the day Hudson turned 7. The montage moves through different years of his childhood, with Zellweger appearing in several of the memories rather than only one group photograph.

CRANS MONTANA, Switzerland (AP) — Thriston Lawrence of South Africa overcame a six-shot deficit Sunday with an 8-under 62 and denied Paul Casey his first victory in five years by making an 18-foot birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole to win the European Masters.
Casey stood over a putt with the chance to win four times on the 18th green at Crans-sur-Sierre, three of them in the playoff. Lawrence made good on his first chance. He became the seventh three-time winner of this event, and the first since Seve Ballesteros.
Casey (68) led by one going to the 18th and got a huge break when his approach from rough hit a rock and bounced over a stream. But he couldn't get up-and-down for par, leading to the playoff.
Casey had a 35-foot birdie putt for the win on the first playoff hole at No. 18. On the second extra hole, his 10-foot birdie narrowly missed to the right. Officials moved the pin toward the back of the green, and Casey had 8 feet for birdie and the win. That spun off the right edge.
The fourth time around, Lawrence made the winning putt to capture the European Masters for the third time in the last five years.

Rutgers football is listed as 3.5-point underdogs in next week's matchup vs Boston College, according to FanDuel, after suffering an embarrassing 37-21 loss to UMass last week. The line initially opened with the Eagles as 6.5-point favorites, but quickly moved to where it is now after Boston College suffered a 34-15 blowout loss to Cincinnati.
In their loss against the Minutemen, Rutgers' defense surrendered 197 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, and 40 rushing yards to the Minutemen's William Watson, who saw his first major amount of playing time in two years after transferring from Virginia Tech. They also surrendered 200 rushing yards and one touchdown. On the flip side, the Knights' starting quarterback, Boston College transfer Dylan Lonergan, completed 16 of his 29 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw three interceptions. Running back Antwan Raymond averaged just three yards per carry in this matchup as he ran for 42 yards on 14 attempts.
In their loss against Cincinnati, Boston College starting quarterback Mason McKenzie completed 18 of 35 passes for 223 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He finished the game with an overall quarterback rating of 108.7. The Eagles' leading rusher against the Bearcats was Evan ******* ens, who carried the ball 11 times for 47 yards and one touchdown, while their leading receiver, Johnathan Montague, caught two out of three passes for 55 yards and one touchdown.
While racking up more first downs than their opponent, Boston College turned the ball over on downs three times and added an interception and a fumble lost, giving their opponent extra possessions. The Eagles' offensive line also surrendered 4 sacks, while the entire team committed 7 total penalties.
Much like Rutgers' two meaningless scores at the end of their game against the Minutemen, the Eagles also scored a last-second touchdown to make the ending score look better than the game actually was.

Thriston Lawrence did what Paul Casey could not: covert a winning putt at the Omega European Masters.
Lawrence made a 20-foot birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole to defeat Casey and successfully defend his ******* le in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. He also joined Seve Ballesteros as the only three-time winner of the DP World Tour event. Lawrence won as well in 2022, while Ballesteros was victorious in 1977, '78 and '89.
The two men finished regulation at 18 under par, with Lawrence closing in 8-under 62 and Casey, the overnight leader by three, shooting 68.
Casey, however, had a chance to end it on the 72nd hole. Leading by one, his approach shot from the rough on the par-4 18th landed well short of the green, bounded onto a rock, bounced over a creek and settled in the rough. The fortunate break allowed Casey to chip from a difficult lie to 10 feet past the hole. His winning effort, though, lipped out.
That led to sudden death with Lawrence, who was watching things unfold on TV.

Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891. Throughout its history, the Vols have played on Sept. 3 five times and have a 2-3 record.
Tennessee last played on Sept. 3 in 2011, defeating Montana, 42-16, at Neyland Stadium.
The Vols' other win on Sept. 3 in program history was against UAB in 2005. Tennessee defeated the Blazers, 17-10, at Neyland Stadium.
Tennessee entered its season opener against UAB with a No. 3 national ranking and finished its 2005 campaign with Phillip Fulmer's first losing season as head coach (5-6, 3-5 SEC).
Tennessee played two quarterbacks against the Blazers. Rick Clausen completed 17-of-24 passing attempts for 217 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Erik Ainge completed 5-of-14 passing attempts for 57 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Sep. 2—MOSCOW, Idaho — Losing to fellow Big Sky Conference member Cal Poly, 38-34, on a final-seconds touchdown pass on 4th and 8, in the season-opening game was a rude shock for Idaho, which, based on its 5-0 all-time record against the Mustangs and Cal Poly's recent reputation as a Big Sky speed ***** p had pretty much penciled this in as a win.
The defining game for the Vandals this year was supposed to be the home clash against defending Football Championship Subdivision Montana State Oct 2. But now the Vandals are already in damage control mode, needing to make a good showing against Football Bowl Subdivision Utah on Thursday to convince themselves, more than anyone, that they are a good team, better than their 4-8 record last year and their season-opening stumble, and still harboring hopes of making the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. This is all on Idaho. Utah has nothing to prove other than it can handle an FCS team.
Here are three things to watch when the Vandals and Utes collide.
1. Have the Vandals got their defense fixed?
Against Cal Poly the defensive line was regularly pushed off the ball. Idaho could not mount much of a pass rush or hold an edge against Mustangs' quarterback Anthony Grigbsy, who threw for four touchdowns and ran for 62 yards and another score, and Cal Poly's 197 rushing yard and 319 passing yards point to Idaho's shortcomings in tackling and pass defense. Linebacker Cruz Hepburn's 12 tackles and a pass breakup were notable. However, the Vandals can't give up 516 yards of total offense again against any opponent, let alone Utah, and expect to have much of a season.

One year after renouncing what he called the gay "lifestyle," Christian recording artist and former reality TV star Davis Mallory has revealed his new straight love life.
The singer posted posted a series of photos with a woman he started dating last month to his 28.5K followers on Instagram.
"It's crazy what love can do. I love you rachelevaughanaa," Mallory wrote in a caption for one post showing the couple smooching, cuddling and other PDA selfies and snapshots. "I love you," replied Rachel Vaughan with four heart emojis.
The Georgia native, who calls Nashville home, also posted a video montage of the new couple's travels together over the weekend that he captioned, "Thankful for new memories that someday turn to old photographs."
3 weeks ago, Mallory actually broke the news of his new romance himself. He appeared on a podcast episode that he shared on his Instagram that apparently didn't get any traction. In the caption for the video, he wrote: "When physical intimacy with a man felt hollow, a spiritual journey began. A trip to Hawaii led to a chance encounter with a woman on fire for Jesus, who became a beacon of faith during a time of isolation. This meeting ignited a renewed passion for God."

EAST LANSING – To say Pat Fitzgerald has a big personality would be an understatement.
Michigan State's new football coach has some big jokes, too.
Fitzgerald twice took lighthearted jabs at lightning rod LSU coach Lane Kiffin during his debut radio show on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
The first came when offensive lineman Conner Moore joined the broadcast with Fitzgerald, host Dalton Shetler and former MSU running back Jehuu Caulcrick. Shetler listed a bunch of superlatives for Moore, a senior who played a team-high 765 snaps last season for the Spartans and was fifth in the Big Ten with an 80.4 run blocking grade after arriving from Montana State.
"Should we keep going with showering with praise?" Shelter asked Fitzgerald.

"So she brought me on one time, and I just remember going up to Miley Cyrus, and I was like, 'She's my mother, not yours. And Miley was like, 'We can share her,'" she added
Later, Rowan continued, "You cannot say that to me. And mom was like, 'Okay, yes, I'm yours,'"

Joe Montana didn't do enough to crack Dan Orlovksy's top-five quarterback list, but Matthew Stafford is on the verge of getting there.
Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams are one of the strongest Super Bowl favorites in recent years, particularly after Aaron Donald officially came out of retirement to **** emble what could be a historic defensive line with Myles Garrett. Jordyn Woods has hit back after fans asked why Jaden Smith was seemingly in her bridal party.
The newlywed explained she and Will Smith's son have been friends since they were babies.

Although Jaden was not an official member of Jordyn's all-female bridal party, he was very much part of the experience, leading some fans to express surprise at the actor's level of involvement.
"Why is Jaden with all of the girls? And at the bridal shower? And helping Karl with his shoes?" Jordyn wrote in a caption to a TikTok video montage featuring childhood snapshots of herself with Jaden, also 28, before explaining she and Jaden had been close friends for their entire lives.

Aug. 30—With the first two home matches and another pair of wins in the books for the No. 23 Warrior volleyball team, Lewis-Clark State sophomores Michaela Romine and Kendall Focht have the rest of the weekend to recover and ... watch their fathers hit the links as they volunteer at the Warrior Golf Classic today.

"Anytime our dads can play golf, they want to play golf," Focht added, breaking a smile.
The two families certainly have a lot to smile about during today's athletics department fundraiser.
Romine delivered 10 kills, including the final one to put the match away, and Focht poured in 17 ***** ists during the Warriors' victory over MSU-Northern — their second sweep in as many days over the Skylights at the P1FCU Activity Center.

Quarterbacks get all the attention these days, but the reality is that even Brady was throwing the ball to Randy Moss (and Rob Gronkowski), and Joe Montana would be the first to admit that his career benefited greatly from having Jerry Rice on the receiving end of his passes.
Receivers have never been better than they are today, and that's a big part of why we're in the golden era of quarterback play across the league. The surplus of talent in the league is so high that teams have found themselves with an embarrassment of riches at the league's most dynamic position. Here's a list of the top five wide receiver tandems heading into the season.
The Detroit Lions don't often get thought of as one of the league's premier passing attacks, but this duo has quietly helped quarterback Jared Goff become one of the most consistent passers in the league. St. Brown has been one of the most lethal options in the slot in the league, if not the most lethal option, and Williams can take the top off any defense.
Williams' route running and some of the finer, more technical aspects of his game could use some refining, but even if he never improved, and he almost certainly will, he and his running mate are plenty dangerous enough as is.
Jefferson had what could be classified as a down year under the oppression of the Vikings' 2025 quarterback room. And by oppression, we mean he finished the campaign with 84 catches for 1,048 yards and two touchdowns. Addison missed time last year due to disciplinary action, but still had a solid year, catching 42 passes for 610 yards and three scores.

What are the early indicators, for better or worse? These are a few.
1.) Can NC State's defense be more consistently disruptive on passing plays? State's defense was really, really bad on passing downs last season—its havoc rate stunk, it was bad on a per-play basis, from an EPA basis, from pretty much every basis. Whole thing was ugly.
Virginia doesn't have a skill position group that's scaring anybody, and as long as Beau Pribula is the starting quarterback—which I don't think will last long—then the ceiling there is pretty low. But if he has four seconds to make a decision every time he drops back, he's going to look like Joe Montana. The battle between UVA's offensive line and State's defense might be the only thing that really matters in this game.
2.) Is CJ Bailey ready to be the kind of quarterback who can carry a team to a big win? The pressure is on now. Everybody knows what kind of player Bailey is, and what he can be—and he's being paid to deliver. Is he ready to handle it? He's working with a brand new bunch of receivers, and he is going to have to improvise for State to have success offensively. There will be breakdowns and misunderstandings and he will need to fix a few things in the moment to keep the ball moving. It's Week 0 and maybe the biggest game of his career so far.
3.) How good are Harvey Dyson and Popo Aguirre? NC State is counting on both to be important; I think it's fair to say both are high-floor guys, but can they be good enough to make the defense substantially better? Aguirre has the most work ahead of him on that one, and if he ends up a clear difference-maker, that changes the expectations for the defense. The margins for success on this defense are extremely small—if either of these guys has an off day, if either gets hurt, it's extremely bad news.

Over the summer, the basketball world sadly lost a legendary figure. Former NBA player, coach and Hall of Famer Don Nelson passed away at the age of 86-years-old in early August. While the NBA world is still mourning the loss of the coaching visionary and five-time champion, the Warriors will pay tribute to their former coach when they suit up for the 2026-27 NBA season.
On Wednesday, the Warriors announced they would be wearing a special band on their jerseys for every game during the 2026-27 NBA season featuring the word "NELLIE". The patch will sit near Golden State's jersey sponsor on one of the shoulders.
Via warriors on X:
Nelson played 14-years in the NBA, winning five championships with the Boston Celtics before starting a legendary coaching career. The former Iowa Hawkeye went on to coach a total of 31 seasons in the NBA, including two stints with the Warriors over 11 seasons. Prior to joining the Warriors bench, Nelson coached 10 seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks.
Nelson then joined the Warriors in 1988, leading Golden State to the postseason behind Chris Mullin, Mitch Richmond and Tim Hardaway. Nelson then went on to coach the New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks. Nelson returned to the Bay Area in 2006, leading the Warriors back to the playoffs with the "We Believe" Warriors featuring Baron Davis, Jason Richardson, Monta Ellis, Stephen Jackson, Matt Barnes and Al Harrington.

The world is mourning the loss of Dolly Parton, but her death has hit goddaughter Miley Cyrus especially hard.
According to a new report from Rob Shuter's Naughty But Nice Substack published on Wednesday, August 26, the "Flowers" singer, 33, is having a tough time coming to grips with Parton's death.
"Miley needs time. This one is going to hurt for a very long time," a source told the gossip columnist, adding that while Miley "knew this day would eventually come," she still wasn't prepared for the reality of losing the Steel Magnolias star and is now "absolutely heartbroken."
"Miley is in a very dark place right now," the source continued. "This isn't Miley losing another music legend. This is Miley losing someone who helped raise her, guided her career and loved her unconditionally."
The Hannah Montana alum publicly addressed the devastating loss on Wednesday, and she admitted that some parts of her relationship with Parton were simply too personal to share with the public.

Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus shared a deep bond as godmother and goddaughter
The two singers collaborated on numerous projects, including Hannah Montana, music duets and co-hosting a New Year's Eve special
Miley recounted one of her last conversations with Parton in an emotional tribute following the "Jolene" singer's death on Aug. 25
Dolly Parton was a beloved figure to millions worldwide, but she was "like a mother" to her goddaughter Miley Cyrus.
The Queen of Country and the "Flowers" singer's relationship goes back all the way to before Miley was even born, when Parton forged a close friendship with her father, Billy Ray Cyrus. Billy and Parton were touring together in the early 1990s when Billy and his then-partner, Tish Cyrus, were expecting their first child together.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A man killed eight of his relatives, including four children, as they gathered for Sunday dinner at a home in Billings, Montana, just weeks after his parents forced him to move out, a family member told The ****** ociated Press.
Brad Ireland, whose former wife and two children were among the dead, identified the shooter as 44-year-old Alan Smith. Smith's parents, who were also killed, had asked him to move out, but he returned on Sunday and opened fire, Ireland said.
The victims represented four generations of the blended family, ranging from a great-grandmother in her 90s who used a wheelchair to a 7-year-old girl, according to Jennifer Mercer, a neighbor and family friend who set up an online fundraiser to help cover funeral costs and other expenses, and was authorized to release these details.
Police said they responded to the home on Sunday evening and heard gunshots coming from out back, just before the house was completely engulfed in flames. Investigators confirmed Tuesday there were eight victims, including four children, and that the suspect had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and later died.
The investigation has been complicated by concerns about the structural integrity of the house after the fire burned it to its foundation, said Jeff Stovall, a spokesperson for the Billings Police Department.

Constellation Brands will invest $100 million over five years to boost U.S. farmer profitability in states that produce hops, barley and other ingredients in the Modelo and Corona maker's beers.
The investment will include additional purchases from farmers in Idaho, Montana and North Dakota, plus initiatives to improve market access and economic resiliency.
The beer maker will also establish a farmer-led advisory committee that will provide insight on how the investments can best support growers in the company's agricultural supply chain.
The farm economy is facing a "generational downturn," according to the American Farm Bureau Federation, as increased production costs and sustained weather challenges strain financials.

Jed York's weekend arrest wasn't the first time San Francisco 49ers ownership has found itself on the wrong side of the law – though, ironically, those past legal missteps are largely why York finds himself in such a prominent position now.
York, 46, who pleaded no contest Monday, Aug. 24, to two misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools in Columbiana County, Ohio, after a charge of "engaging in prostitution" was reduced, was, until recently, the NFL's youngest principal owner. That track largely became available to him starting in 2000, when his uncle, Pro Football Hall of Famer Eddie DeBartolo Jr., relinquished control of the team to his sister Denise DeBartolo York (Jed York's mother) and brother-in-law John York (Jed York's father).
Prior to that, DeBartolo was widely perceived as an owner whom stars throughout the league wanted to play for given his demand for championship football – the 49ers won five Super Bowls between the 1981 and 1994 seasons, none since – but also his willingness to spare no expense while caring for the members of his roster. (The Niners would eventually be hit with nearly $1 million in fines and forfeited a fifth-round draft pick in 2001 plus a third-rounder in 2002 after the NFL found them guilty of circumventing the salary cap, which came into existence in 1994, during a 1999 investigation.)
But DeBartolo's legal issues away from football ultimately drove him from the league. He pleaded guilty to one felony charge of failing to report an alleged extortion attempt in 1998 amid his attempt to obtain a riverboat gambling license in Louisiana. Former state governor Edwin Edwards allegedly attempted to extract $400,000 from DeBartolo amid his bid for the license. The NFL fined DeBartolo $1 million and suspended him for the 1999 season due to his involvement with Edwards, who was imprisoned on racketeering charges in 2002.
As for DeBartolo, who entered the Hall of Fame in 2016 and remains close to his former players – he presented former Niners coach Bill Walsh plus team and NFL legends Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Fred Dean and Charles Haley as they went into Canton – he never returned to the team as its controlling owner following the suspension.
