The decision was this for Brady Sheffield: remain as Old Lyme's boys basketball coach and continue building it into a small-school powerhouse or start the path to hopefully one day becoming a full-time college basketball head coach.
Sheffield made the decision to choose the latter. Difficult not only because he was leaving where he once played, but also in the sense of the relationships he built and who was coming back for the Wildcats. Sheffield took a job as an ****** istant men's basketball coach at Division III Mitchell College earlier this month.
"It was definitely not an easy decision. "I was really excited with what we had coming back," Sheffield said. "We had a great off-season to that point and they were playing well in the summer league."
Sheffield, 24, went 63-14 through three seasons, including the program's first CIAC championship in 2024, winning Division V. Old Lyme was a Division V finalist again in 2025 and also won back-to-back Shoreline Conference championships the last two seasons. You would be hard-pressed to find someone who did a better job in that three-year span.
Eddie Fiske, the two-time Shoreline Conference Player of the Year, transferred to The Frederick Gunn School. But a number of players are returning in the Wildcats' bid for a third-straight league championship. Plus, Sheffield rests easy knowing who his replacement is.

The following Dolly Parton interviewed originally appeared in the July 1997 issue of Out magazine.
Dolly Parton is ready for dinner. All five-foot-one of her bodacious curves and Dynel blondness is perched on Frederick's of Hollywood-style mules as she moves through the lobby of the posh Pierre hotel overlooking New York's Central Park. Hers is a Southern manner both gracious and "oh my gracious."
Patsy Cline in Jessica Rabbit's body, she offers a friendly ***** o to anyone who cranes his neck to glimpse her-which is everyone. As she descends the stairs and settles into a corner banquette in the hotel cafe, the waiters stand in awe, each wearing a grin that says, It's so nice to have you back where you belong. One thing is certain: She is looking swell, this Dolly. A triumph of style over fashion in "an Azzedine shirt and a K Mart skirt," she is a star and then some. An icon, I call her. "An icon or an eyesore?" Parton shoots back.
This is definitely going to be fun.
"I can't even begin to imagine dressing up in a nice business suit and coming down to dinner," she says, after ordering seared foie gras and mashed potatoes. "I would much rather have the shock value of walking down the steps with my ***** hanging out but knowing that I've still got the same brain and the same talent. What kind of fun would I have doing it if I had to be ordinary?"

Adorned in rhinestones and elevating her 5-foot stature with sky-high heels and voluminous blonde wigs, Dolly Parton often joked, "it costs a lot of money to look this cheap!"
Parton's looks on stage and off reflected both her Tennessee roots and her embodiment of over-the-top feminine glamour, an aesthetic articulated in her album **** le and self-anointed nickname "Backwoods Barbie." She was rarely seen without long acrylic nails, a full face of makeup, and heapings of glitter.
The prolific musician, actor and philanthropist, who died on Tuesday at 80 years old, always had a tongue-in-cheek response to criticisms about her larger-than-life sense of style. She quipped about her hair being a fire hazard, would play her hit '9 to 5' with nothing but her fire red acrylic nails as the instrument, and she unabashedly loved flashy clothes: shoulder pads, plunging necklines, a cinched waist, lace were all sartorial non-negotiables for the singer. But she paired it with a keen sense of self-awareness that only made her devout fanbase love her more.

"When I moved to Nashville in 1964, I already had some ideas about what I wanted to look like onstage — and off," she wrote in her book "Behind the Seams" in 2023. "Country stars had to have big hair and some sparkles, and you had to have a Cadillac. I had the big hair but not yet the Cadillac — or enough sparkles." She related to the clothes worn by famous fixtures on stage of the Grand Ole Opry, like Jean Shepard and didn't shy away from the unconventional things that influenced her, telling People she even took inspiration from the famously risqué Frederick's of Hollywood catalogs she flipped through when she was young.

Ivanka Trump flaunts her surfing skills during a family trip to Costa Rica. President Donald Trump's daughter donned a black wetsuit and white full-sleeved top over it, with her hair tied in neat braids. Her husband, Jared Kushner, and the couple's children, Arabella Rose, Joseph Frederick, and Theodore James, didn't appear to be present.
Ivanka Trump gave a glimpse into her summer holidays by putting her surfing skills to the test in Costa Rica. The 44-year-old shared a lengthy carousel showcasing some wholesome, candid moments from her recent summer break. The photos accompanied the caption: "Summer Snaps."
Although Trump did not share photos of herself surfing in a white wetsuit, Page Six published the photos. The 44-year-old showed off her athletic prowess on a green surfboard, with an instructor reportedly guiding her through the process.
Trump did not wear any makeup, and her skin looked flushed due to the intense water activity. However, she was seen with a dainty bracelet or her hair tie on her wrist and a surf leash on the right ankle. At one point, Trump slipped and fell in the ocean but got back on her feet to surf again. In a few other snaps, she flaunted a candid smile, indicating that she seemingly enjoyed surfing by herself.
The US President's daughter might have enjoyed her surfing outing, but the internet wasn't particularly impressed by it. One fan commented, "I think you mean—'took surfing lessons.'" A second fan quipped, "If you show her dad these pics he might stay awake in meetings!" A third fan joked, "Those pictures look like a poor photoshop job." A fourth fan wrote, "That's not surfing, it's yachting with fins."

POPLAR GROVE, Ill (WTVO/WQRF) — North Boone football is coming into year two of the Brett Fredrick era. Everyone on the team is continuing to build on what they learned last year.
"I was very proud of that group last year, being our first year together and coming together as the season went along." Said head coach Brett Frederick. "This group is determined to take the next step, to continue to carry on and to take the things they learned from a year ago and from those that were around us that maybe aren't here anymore."
The Vikings lost a handful of players from last season, including quarterback Grady Condon, wide receiver Brad Dahl, and lineman Phillip Davis. North Boone also lost offensive coordinator Chris Weber, as he is now the head coach at Stillman Valley. Leaving a hole that Coach Fredrick and his ****** istants are gladly able to fill.
"Fortunately, the system that we have been using for quite some time." Said Coach Frederick. "I am pretty well versed in it, so I can slide over to the offensive coordinator responsibilities without having to change terminology and scheme entirely."
With a smaller group leaving from North Boone, it means a lot of returning experience for the Vikings, along with a lot of the younger talent stepping into new roles.

With recurring rain showers in Pennsylvania this summer, fishing conditions varied at different lakes, but fish were biting for those who knew how to adapt.
Mark Melega, 57, of Rices Landing and Lee Corazzi, 66, of Fredericktown, have fished in tournaments for years and have found ways to get the fish to bite.
"We had a good year," Melega said.
The cousins fish in a variety of tournaments with their teammate Bucky Mounts of Washington. They fish from Erie to West Virgina and many lakes and rivers in between.
Corazzi said the fishing continues to improve, especially on the Monongahela River.

Stocks that have climbed in the early weeks of training camp shouldn't be overlooked. The belittling of excelling in Oxnard because Kaiir Elam and others like him did well before regular-season flopping isn't fair.
There are plenty of times players look great and go on to have great seasons, building on camp momentum. Antwaun Woods was battling with Travis Frederick in training camp, and even though Frederick retired from the NFL, Woods took that confidence and ended up as a starter for Dallas. It's a story as old as time.
The Dallas Cowboys are looking for consistency in play; a drumbeat. Show up, make plays, outperform others on special teams or in their position groups, and try to be impactful to the coaches. On offense, the Cowboys have three clear needs to fill: tight end, offensive tackle, and explosive rushing option, and these options are rising their stocks early on in camp.
Trigg has made some nice receptions in camp, but that's what was expected based on his highlight reels from Baylor. What's truly raising his stock is his better-than-expected run blocking, along with the thinning out of competition, namely Princeton Fant's ACL injury. Luke Schoonmaker is still clearly TE3 due to special teams ability, but if Trigg continues to look like a better option on offense, the team could find a way to keep him on the roster.
The Guyton worry has shifted in Year 3 from "can he play?" to will he play. When Guyton is on the field, he performs well enough to be a solid starting left tackle. Guyton unfortunately can't be trusted to be on the field daily.

Nats first round pick Chris Hacopian will be making his minor league debut tomorrow. Interestingly, it will not be in Fredericksburg. Instead, the local kid will be skipping over Low-A and will join the Wilmington Blue Rocks. The old regime would always send draft picks to Low-A first, even if it were only for a few games, but that has changed.
After being drafted 11th overall last month, it will be exciting to see Hacopian get started. That Wilmington team was already loaded, and now they are getting another top prospect. The likes of Eli Willits, Ronny Cruz and Miguel Sime Jr. are some of the players currently in Wilmington. Now, Paul Toboni's first draft pick will join them.
This ***** ignment is interesting for a couple reasons. First is that it is another change from the new regime. Even when Dylan Crews was drafted second overall, he played 14 games in Fredericksburg. After that, he skipped High-A and went to Harrisburg. Playing for the Fred Nats was like a rite of passage for Nationals prospects.
Wilmington is known as a bad place to hit, and the old regime was hyper-aware of that. The new regime has been more willing to send guys to Wilmington and let them stay there. It is a pitchers park, but if you can hit, you can thrive there. We saw that with the likes of Ethan Petry, Devin Fitz-Gerald and now Eli Willits.
Hacopian will be the next big bat in Wilmington. Toboni and the front office must have felt that the infielders bat was just too advanced for Low-A. There is certainly evidence for that, as Hacopian was seen as one of the best college hitters in the class. He has walked more than he has struck out wherever he has played. Now, he will take on Wilmington.

Wayne Taylor Racing ended a winning streak of more than two years in IMSA Grand Touring Prototype, winnin the Motul SportsCar Endurance Grand Prix at Road America with the No. 10 Cadillac of Filipe Albuquerque and Ricky Taylor
In a chaotic race (expanded to six hours) Sunday on the Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, road course, Albuquerque and Taylor delivered the team's first win in the top category of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship since Detroit in June 2024. It's WTR's first victory since returning to Cadillac last year.
"Very, very special," Albuquerque said. "This is more than just a win. Super happy with everyone."
Albuquerque took the lead from Jack Aitken in the No. 31 Cadillac with just under 90 minutes remaining and held on through multiple restarts as the race ended under yellow. The No. 5 JDC-Miller MotorSports Porsche 963 of Laurin Heinrich, Kaylen Frederick and Tijmen van der Helm finished second, and WTR 's No. 40 Cadillac of Jordan Taylor and Louis Deletraz finished third.
"Amazing day, it was a full team effort," Ricky Taylor said. "So proud of how the team has stuck with it and kept working towards this sort of result, and just very thankful to Cadillac for sticking with us through all of it. They've always had our back, and they've emphasized how it's one team and that support goes a long way to keeping our confidence because our confidence has been challenged a lot with the lack of results. So, finally getting a win and not just a lucky one. It was a strong performance all day, so we feel like this is something we can build on."

Kathryn Kai-ling Frederick, the Rams' chief marketing officer, said the uniforms have been in the works for two years and were "heavily requested" by fans.
SoFi Stadium will be the site of Super Bowl LXI, and the Rams made several blockbuster offseason moves to increase their chances of playing in it.

Free agency is in full effect here for the NHL, and teams made some major splashes to improve their rosters. After winning two Stanley Cups in Florida, Sergei Bobrovsky heads up north to Toronto. Vincent Trocheck gets traded to Utah for a haul, John Carlson signs with Tampa Bay, and Darnell Nurse gets shipped to San Jose.
RELATED: Maple Leafs sign Stanley Cup winning goalie
The Toronto Maple Leafs are seen as a major winner in free agency. Signing a proven goalie in Sergei Bobrovsky solidifies their goaltending problem. Bobrovsky had a down year last season, posting a .877 SV%, but in the previous two years, he had 30-plus win seasons. They can free up more cap ******* e with moves to add to their roster, too. Solid day one for Toronto.
The San Jose Sharks, who easily crushed the first-round draft, have now committed $17.5 million to two players on their defensive core. Jacob Trouba, who wasn’t great last season, was traded for Darnell Nurse, and they took on his entire salary. Yes, the Sharks have money to play with, but they are committing the money to the wrong players.
Trading away Darnell Nurse to San Jose was a massive win for the Oilers. Signing Ryan Shea is a huge boost to their team, along with trading for a young goaltender in Devon Levi. Frederick Anderson, who had a strong playoff performance this season, adding a Stanley Cup to his resume, joins the team to help Edmonton’s goaltender problem.

Laurin Heinrich rallied JDC-Miller MotorSports to a third-place finish at the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen after dropping a lap down. However, a victory by rival Jack Aitken meant the German lost ground in the GTP championship.
The #5 Porsche 963 started fifth at Watkins Glen International, but was hit with severe adversity with three and a half hours remaining when co-driver Kaylen Frederick suffered a cut left-rear tire following contact with a GTD car, leaving the tire carcass at Turn 9. Frederick managed to limp back to the pit lane, but the subsequent issue dropped the team to a lap down. Despite the setback, the plethora of cautions in the chaotic race allowed the combination of Frederick, Hienrich, and third co-driver Tijman van der Helm claw back on the lead lap.
Heinrich took over for the final two stints and pushed back into contention for the win. While a slow stop with roughly 55 minutes left provided another brief setback, he cut a 13s deficit to the race leader down to 6.5s, carving back up to the rear wing of runner-up Nick Yelloly before caution on the final lap cemented a result on the final step of the podium.
“Yeah, frantic to say the least,” said Heinrich, 24. “It was a roller coaster, the race, on a roller coaster track. Had a good start. Yesterday was the first time qualifying, so that means a very first time starting in GTP in a prototype in general.
“So that was a new experience for me, which was great to do. I knew it was a long race, so just trying to get settled, came in in third. Then we hit some trouble, we were a lap down, had to take emergency service to refit a tire. And looked like it's going to be difficult, but what I really liked was today the team didn't give up."

Texas A&M's No. 1-ranked recruiting class took another step towards securing the top spot after landing five-star linebacker Kaden Henderson, ranked as the No. 1 LB and No. 2-ranked prospect in Florida, and could result in the Aggies landing several priority prospects, including five-star Florida-based wide receiver Eric McFarland, who will announce his commitment on June 28.
After dominating the Georgia recruiting landscape in the 2026 signing class, Florida continues to be the bedrock for elite talent at nearly every position, and third-year coach Mike Elko isn't slowing down after landing four top 100-ranked Florida prospects, including five-star OT Mark Matthews, five-star edge Zyron Forstall, Henderson, and four-star defensive lineman Frederick Ards III.
Covering all of his bases, Mike Elko and his newly formed staff, especially **** istant head coach/running backs coach Trooper Taylor and offensive line coach Adam Cushing, have landed nearly every priority prospect on their board, and before landing Mark Matthews, the Aggies secured key commitments from five-star IOL Kennedy Brown and four-star tackles DeMarrion Johnson and Kaeden Kent.
Along the defensive line, Zyron Forstall and four-star edge Kaden McCarty, paired with defensive tackles Myels Smith and Elijah Patmon, make up a future rotation with high NFL upside, while the future secondary is all but set after blue-chip safeties Kamarui Dorsey and JayQuan Snell shut down their recruitments.
After Kaden Henderon's massive commitment announcement, Texas A&M now leads the country once again with a whopping 10 top 100-ranked commits in the 2027 cycle, per Rivals.

Texas A&M's 2027 recruiting class is reaching historical levels, and while comparing the cycle to the, yes, historic 2022 signing class that didn't pan out under former head coach Jimbo Fisher, it isn't a fair comparison by any means, now knowing that third-year coach Mike Elko is a proven developer after seeing a record ten players selected in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Luring talent at every position, Elko's background as a safety coach led to securing commitments from five-star Kamarui Dorsey and four-star JayQuan Snell, who have both shut down their recruitments and intend to sign with the Aggies in early December. In the trenches, the program's No. 1-ranked play, five-star OT Mark Matthews, is back in College Station for his OV, and leads a future OL group featuring five-star IOL Kennedy Brown and four-star tackles DeMarrion Johnson and Kaeden Kent.
One of the program's early 2027 commits, four-star quarterback Jayce Johnson, is now looking like a steal out of Georgia, while four-star wide receiver Jaden Upshaw is on the cusp of earning his fifth star by the fall based on his level of play and elite versatility with the ability to play all the receiver positions at a high level.
Texas A&M's defensive line additions might just be the most impressive of the 19 commitments in the cycle, as four-star DL Myels Smith shut down his recruitment on Sunday, followed by Elko and new D-line coach Elijah Robinson earning a key commitment from four-star edge Frederick Ards III, who possesses the size to move inside once he makes his way to College Station.
Nationally, 14 of the program's 19 2027 commitments are considered blue-chip prospects, which is tied for second most with Oklahoma, Miami, and Notre Dame, while the Florida Gators' 15 blue-chip commits lead the way. However, I expect the Aggies to take the lead in the coming days/weeks after another successful weekend hosting a long list of blue-chip priority prospects.
