The Mets came from behind to walk off the Nationals in a thrilling 5-4 victory. Sean Manaea provided desperately needed length, the bullpen held firm, and the Mets mounted a ninth inning rally that culminated in a Francisco Alvarez game-tying double and a Francisco Lindor walk-off knock to win it.

Given the disaster the Dodgers are dealing with right now, it is increasingly looking like the Mets made the right decision when it comes to Edwin Díaz.

LOS ANGLES — Edwin Díaz likely won't be available to pitch for the remainder of the weekend against the Milwaukee Brewers, after pitching on each of the last two nights, with extended outings both nights. He walked a tightrope on Friday night, loading the bases in the ninth inning, but somehow survived to earn the save. It wasn't a good outing by any means, but all parties believe Díaz is at least heading in the right direction.
Díaz since returning from the injured list has one clean outing in six tries, with seven runs allowed in 4 2/3 innings. One night after allowing three runs in a blown save to the Brewers, he walked two batters and hit another, loading the bases in the ninth inning. This time he escaped without damage, helped by a fantastic play by second baseman Tommy Edman for the second out of the frame. A grounder to shortstop Mookie Betts ended it.
"It was good for him to work his way out of it, and obviously he was a hitter away," manager Dave Roberts said. "Even with that last hitter, I wanted to see him try to fight through it and get through it. I was happy that he finished what he started.
Díaz said his posture on the mound was something he was working on, that his misses were more off the plate than in the middle of the strike zone to get punished.
"I'm leaning too much toward the right-handed hitter. Instead of straight down the plate, today was way better," Díaz said. "My fastball ride was way batter than yesterday. I'm going in a good direction, so keep getting better and keep getting better."

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Will Klein is on the injured list with right elbow soreness, but rather than opt for surgery, he is going to try to rest his arm and come back this season.
Klein struggled immensely, leading to an IL stint a week ago. Now, he has been found to have loose bodies in his elbow, though he is choosing a rest-oriented method instead of surgery.
He is going to start a throwing program soon, Klein said to the media, including Dodgers Nation.
Loose bodies — an ailment that has led to Blake Snell and Edwin Diaz going through surgery, along with new addition Tarik Skubal — require surgery to fully treat and tend to have a recovery time of 2-3 months.

The Los Angeles Dodgers signed superstar closer Edwin Díaz in the offseason, but his season has not gone to plan.
He missed over three months after having surgery to remove loose bodies in his elbow. He was not pitching well before hitting the injured list and has struggled ever since returning as well. He had a 10.50 ERA in the seven games he pitched before he was shut down, and has a 9.00 ERA since returning.
The Dodgers bullpen once again blew a lead on Monday night, but a one-run seventh inning got them back in front. Tanner Scott and Edwin Díaz were tasked with landing the plane. Scott did what he has done all year and looked great, and Dave Roberts went to Díaz in the ninth inning.
Díaz has allowed a run in every outing this month and has blown one-run leads in each of his last two outings. However, he was perfect on Monday night.

Vanderbilt football's edge rushers are one of the most experienced position groups on the 2026 roster.
But not all of that experience comes with the Commodores.
Miles Capers is the rare sixth-year who has spent his whole career at Vanderbilt. But after Khordae Sydnor's graduation, the Commodores brought in several transfers to compete for that open spot.
Boston College transfer Edwin Kolenge and Iowa transfer Brian Allen Jr. both have experience at other Power Four schools. There's also Myles Miller, from Northwest Mississippi Community College and returner Mason Carter, a potential breakout candidate. There's also LSU transfer CJ Jackson, though Jackson will miss at least some of the 2026 season due to an injury from the spring.
"The guys that have been here have really brought (the transfers) along and been open-minded to it," defensive coordinator Steve Gregory said. "Those guys are a really close-knit group."

Tennessee is loaded at a handful of spots on their roster going into the 2026, and on the defensive side of the ball, that's its linebacker room.
Behind seniors Arion Carter and Jeremiah Telander, junior Edwin Spillman, and 2025 third team All-Big Ten selection Amare Campbell, Tennessee has a number of younger players with notable upside waiting in the wings.
Unfortunately, according to VolQuest's Austin Price, the Vols just lost one of those young players for the season. Price says sophomore LB Jaedon Harmon tore his ACL in practice on Saturday and is out for the year.
Harmon came to Tennessee from Rome, Georgia, where he was a consensus four-star player and top 200 recruit by On3. He made a quick impact last season as a true freshman. He was a special teams standout and notched 19 total tackles.
Tennessee still has a ton of young talent at linebacker. Rising sophomore Jaden Perlotte showed a lot of promise last year, and incoming freshman TJ White and Brayden Rouse have notable upside.

Tennessee linebacker Jaedon Harmon is out for the season after tearing the ACL in his right knee at practice on Aug. 8, Knox News confirmed.
Harmon, a sophomore, had 19 total tackles and half a sack last season.
Harmon showed promise as a freshman. He was competing for playing time in a deep linebacking corps.
Arion Carter, an All-SEC performer, returns. But he must serve a two-game suspension issued by the NCAA. He led the SEC with 7.6 tackles per game in 2025.
Edwin Spillman and Jeremiah Telander were among the SEC's top tacklers last season, recording 81 and 80 tackles, respectively.

Coming off back-to-back World Series ******* les, the Los Angeles Dodgers spared no expense in the offseason and signed Edwin Díaz and Kyle Tucker.
Tucker has struggled this year, but is showing some signs of life. Díaz, however, has spent most of the year on the injured list and has looked awful when he is on the mound. He underwent surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow in April.
He has pitched in 12 games this year and has a 10.80 ERA. He has blown three saves, and has a 14.3% walk rate right now. On Saturday, he surrendered back-to-back triples to start the ninth inning, allowing the Arizona Diamondbacks to tie the game. His velocity has crept back up after his return, but the quality of his stuff is not the same.
The Dodgers clearly expected more out of the three-time Reliever of the Year Award winner. However, his struggles are not the biggest surprise. He has gone through stretches like this in the past, and then bounces back. In 2024, he struggled greatly. Notably, he missed the 2023 season with an injury.
The Dodgers cannot rely on him to close games right now and may need to move him out of a leverage role for a while. Tanner Scott is capable of closing games and should be the closer moving forward until Díaz can prove he deserves the ball in the ninth.

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts sees more hope than cause for concern from Edwin Diaz's second consecutive blown save.
With the Dodgers having another one-run lead, Edwin Diaz collapsed. He came in during the bottom of the ninth inning, with LA up 1-0 and needing to win a game to snap a seven-game winning streak.
He allowed two triples right off the bat, immediately giving up the lead and putting a runner on third with no outs.
The game looked over at that point, but through sheer will and some luck, Diaz got out of the jam, stranding the runner on third.

The Dodgers will turn to Yoshinobu Yamamoto on Saturday in hopes to end their seven-game losing streak, a stretch in which nothing really seems to match up properly.
Yamamoto pitched quite well last Saturday at home, allowing three runs in eight innings to the Boston Red Sox, but that was a game in which the Dodgers offense could only score twice. Much like Friday night in Arizona, Roki Sasaki allowed only two run in six innings and the Dodgers took a lead in the eighth inning, but a bad Edwin Díaz slider turned that into a loss, too.
The loss on Tuesday at Wrigley Field turned lopsided later, but that was another strong start wasted, with Tarik Skubal allowing only two runs in six frames in his Dodgers debut.
Major league teams are 803-358 (.692) when their pitcher provides a quality start this season. The Dodgers lead the majors with 61 quality start this season, 11 more than any other team, and that's not even including the six hitless, scoreless innings Eric Lauer provided in bulk relief following an opener on June 22.
The Dodgers are 44-17 (.721) when receiving a quality start, but have lost three such games in the last week on this losing streak.

Diamondbacks Win Most Playoff-like Game of Season
The Diamondbacks took the series opener in tis final series against the Los Angeles Dodgers with playoff rankings for both teams still on the line.
Kelly's Cramping Issue Resurfaces Versus Dodgers
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Merrill Kelly signaled to the dugout with two outs in the sixth inning after giving up a RBI single on Friday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, asking to be taken out of the game. The team later confirmed it was due to cramping in Kelly's right leg, making this the fourth straight season the issues have flared up.
Waldschmidt's Wild Walk-off Night
After the Diamondbacks lost starter Merrill Kelly to yet another cramping issue, they then lost the hard-earned lead over the division rival Dodgers. That brought Ryan Waldschmidt to the plate in the ninth with a runner on and Edwin Diaz looking to close out the game and earn the save for the Dodgers. Waldschmidt had other ideas and launched his second home run of his young career.

PHOENIX (AP) — The two-time defending World Series champions are in a rare funk.
The Los Angeles Dodgers lost their season-high seventh game in a row in a stunning collapse on Friday night after the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied for a 4-3 win when rookie Ryan Waldschmidt hit a two-run, walk-off homer against closer Edwin Diaz.
"A loss is a loss but to get walked off never feels good," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "We didn't play a clean game, a great game, on either side of the baseball, but we did enough to put ourselves in position to win a game.
"Unfortunately, we couldn't finish it."
It was another rough outing for Diaz, who has an 11.00 ERA over 11 outings this season. The 32-year-old is a three-time All-Star, but hasn't been able to help the Dodgers much after signing a $69 million, three-year deal during the offseason.

Meet the Mets pitcher making MLB fans mad over 'cocky' jumping strikeout celebration originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Much like famed reggae artist Marcia Griffiths, Mets reliever Jefry Yan feels like jumping.
New York has had plenty of eye-catching athletes bear its colors in recent years, from Juan Soto to Edwin Diaz. Few have displayed the plyometrics quite like Yan, a gymnastic of sorts from the mound — who happens to be armed with one of the hardest fastballs in the league.
Yan made his big-league debut in the Mets' 6-5 win over the Guardians on Aug. 5. He shined from his post atop the hill, striking out two while getting out of a bases-loaded jam in one inning of work. Suffice to say, Yan's outing — and the depth-defying stunts that accompanied it — had the baseball world talking.
With that, here's what you need to know about Yan, the latest showman to take hold of the spotlight in the Big Apple.

CHICAGO — Joe Girardi remembers when the Yankees were the evil empire of the baseball world.
Girardi, now a YES Network game ******* yst, was a catcher on championship teams when then-Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was signing the priciest free agents and trading for stars year after year. Girardi was also the Yankees manager when they last won a championship in 2009, the year CC Sabathia and Mark Teixeira were brought in to join Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Mariano Rivera and company.
Now it's the Dodgers buying and trading for everyone. They won their second consecutive World Series last October, then spent $309 million in the winter to sign outfielder Kyle Tucker and closer Edwin Diaz.
The Dodgers' roster is so deep that it began the season with five aces.
Now it's six.

The sale of the unwanted cement sculptures from Alan Carr's castle in the Scottish Borders meant more to Clare Stephens than most.
Some of her fondest memories are of visiting the creations at their original home in Branxton in Northumberland.
That is because her grandfather, James "Pim" Beveridge, helped his boss John Fairnington to make them for his disabled son Edwin.

LOS ANGELES — With just two months remaining in the regular season, the Los Angeles Dodgers are beginning to look like the team they envisioned entering the year.
Kiké Hernández is back after a lengthy absence. Edwin Díaz is set to rejoin the bullpen. Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow continue progressing toward full strength.
But the biggest question surrounding the Dodgers remains unanswered.
Despite positive updates on Shohei Ohtani's overall health, manager Dave Roberts acknowledged there is still no timetable for the two-way superstar to resume pitching, raising the possibility that the Dodgers may have to navigate the stretch run without one of the game's elite starting pitchers.
"I think we're just trying to be prudent," Roberts said of Ohtani's recovery. "Overall and total, I feel very good for the rest of the season with all three of those guys as starting pitchers."

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts relayed when Edwin Diaz will return now that his rehabilitation ***** ignment is winding down and made a definetive statement on his status for the current series against Diaz's former team, the New York Mets.
Diaz is working himself back from elbow surgery to remove loose bodies in his right elbow, something that he believes played a big role in his struggles before hitting the injured list.
He made two horrible relief appearances against the Rockies and Rangers, and in between the outings, Diaz took an odd break of more than a week.
However, it was the Rockies' performance that was the last straw before the Dodgers took Diaz in for a deep scan on his right arm and found that he needed surgery.

Edwin Díaz of the Los Angeles Dodgers has missed much of the year after elbow surgery, but he’s nearing a return to the big leagues.
Díaz made his first rehab appearance in Triple-A on Wednesday, and given that timeline, there’s a chance that he could return to the Dodgers in less than a week, as reported by Katie Woo of The Athletic.
Edwin Díaz started his back-to-back with OKC in Sacramento today. He’ll make one more rehab start after that over the weekend (likely Sat). There is a chance both Díaz and Kiké Hernández are active to kick off the next homestand (7/28) #Dodgers
— Katie Woo (katiejwoo) July 22, 2026
Díaz will complete that back-to-back on Thursday, leaving perhaps only one more outing in the minors before he’s back to MLB.

The Cincinnati Reds were losing 7-0 to the Seattle Mariners in Seattle on July 20 when Victor Robles hit a grounder up the middle off of Reds reliever Caleb Ferguson, who had surrendered a grand slam to Cal Raleigh three batters earlier.
Second-base umpire Bill Miller got in second baseman Edwin Arroyo's way as Arroyo tried to field the ball, which rolled into center field for a base hit.
Ferguson turned around and yelled at Miller, and Jomboy Media shared via Twitter/X what Ferguson appeared to say to Miller.
"(Expletive) (expletive), get out of the way," Ferguson appeared to say to Miller. "Fat (expletive)!"
Miller appeared to nod but did not reply verbally to Ferguson or eject Ferguson from the game.

The Dodgers have 16 selections in the 20 rounds of the 2026 MLB Draft, beginning with high school shortstop/third baseman Bo Lowrance at 40th overall in the first round all the way through to pick number 613 in the 20th round, the very last pick in the draft.
For signing free agents Edwin Díaz and Kyle Tucker in the offseason, the Dodgers forfeited their draft picks in the second, third, fifth, and sixth rounds. That thinned their total bonus pool — the amount of money they are permitted to spend — to just over $3.95 million.
The total bonus pool is derived from the total of the recommended slot value of every pick through the first 10 rounds. For any picks from the 11th through the 20th round, as well as for any undrafted free agents, any signing bonus amount over $150,000 will count toward the bonus pool.
The deadline to sign draft picks is Monday, July 27 at 2 p.m. PT.

Dodgers closer Edwin Díaz officially started a minor league rehab ****** ignment on Saturday night, tossing a scoreless inning for Class-A Ontario with two strikeouts and a single allowed.
Díaz needed only 11 pitches, eight of them for strikes in his first game action in 83 days. Making his way back from arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies in his right elbow, Díaz is expected back at some point shortly after the All-Star break. After his outing, Díaz told reporters in Ontario he might need three more rehab games before being ready for return.
Tyler Gough walked four but also struck out five in his three scoreless innings for Great Lakes.
The 22-year-old right-hander, who was acquired from the Mariners for left-hander Robinson Ortiz on November 16, has pitched 13 scoreless innings since joining Great Lakes. After missing nearly two months on the injured list, Gough between Ontario and Great Lakes has a 0.81 ERA in eight starts and 33 1/3 innings, with 39 strikeouts and 13 walks.
Rain washed away Oklahoma City's Saturday game against the El Paso Chihuahuas (Padres), which served as a blessing for the Comets.

José Alvarado's 2026 season had already been messy. There were positives to hope for as the season goes on, there was generally some brutal BABIP and situational luck that helped inflate his ERA. Even with that, there is only so much you can argue for someone who entered tonight's game with an ERA over six.
Then tonight's bottom of the sixth inning happened. It took him 35 pitches because he had to face seven hitters. Three of them ended with walks to first base and with two outs, Noelvi Marte caught an inside cutter right off the left field chalk that put tonight's game completely out of reach.
It seemed like a sure thing to pick up Alvarado's nine-million-dollar club option after 2025, even with his PEDs suspension that derailed a promising season. It was not going to be easy to find left handers at a similar rate, especially since they moved on from Matt Strahm later in the winter.
Through 32.0 innings, Alvarado now carries a 7.04 ERA and no matter what happens over the next month, finding a left handed reliever has become a major need at the upcoming trade deadline.
Tanner Banks made his first appearance with the Phillies since being recalled, following Alan Rangel in a one-run game in the fourth. Edwin Arroyo immediately greeted Banks with a triple past Gabriel Rincones jr (that should've been a single).

The Tennessee Vols haven't been on many folks' radars this offseason. With plenty of roster turnover and an unsettled quarterback battle, the Vols have the looks of a big question mark for the 2026 season amid what should be a wide open and entertaining SEC.
However, the Vols had quite the makeover on the defensive side of the ball going back to December of last year. Tim Banks was fired, and Jim Knowles was brought down from Penn State. Knowles brought a number of his former Nittany Lions players with him to Knoxville with him, and that included three noteworthy defenders in EDGE Chaz Coleman, LB Amare Campbell, and S Dejuan Lane.
Well, Coleman is gone, as all Tennessee fans know, but Campbell should have a strong impact in the middle this season. And it's in the middle where CBS Sports' Chris Hummer thinks the Vols have the best group in the entire country.
Hummer listed the best group nationally at each position, and the Vols' linebackers got the nod.
The Volunteers have the deepest linebacker unit in the country. For example, Edwin Spillman (81) and Jeremiah Telander (80) led Tennessee in tackles last year and are back in 2026. Yet there's a real chance neither starts due to the presence of Arion Carter — an expected draft pick who returned to school because of injury — and Penn State transfer Amare Campbell, a four-star addition out of the portal who's totaled 179 tackles, 20 TFLs and 9.5 sacks over the past two seasons.

Eric Lauer had a solid season for the Toronto Blue Jays last season, posting a 3.18 ERA in 28 games, but he was off to a poor start this year.
Lauer was very important for the Blue Jays last season as he helped cover some key pitching injuries, and also was able to serve as both a starter and reliever. He came out of the bullpen in October and had a 3.12 ERA in five games during the Blue Jays' World Series run. This season, he had a 6.69 ERA in eight games for the Blue Jays, making six starts. They designated him for ******* ignment on May 11, and the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired him for cash on May 17.
The Dodgers have been dealing with pitching injuries all season, with Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell both spending time on the injured list. Relievers Edwin Díaz, Evan Phillips and Blake Treinen are also on the injured list. It made sense for them to acquire a swingman like Lauer to eat innings, but they have turned him into a key player. He has a 2.88 ERA in six games, making five starts, for the Dodgers.

Not only is he helping the Dodgers win games, but he is also making a case to remain on the roster when some of the injured players return. Lauer seems like a far better rotation option than Roki Sasaki at this point in time. When healthy, the Dodgers may be best suited to have a rotation of Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shohei Ohtani, Snell, Glasnow, Lauer and Justin Wrobleski. If they want a five-man rotation, Lauer would make the most sense as a long-relief option.
