(NewsNation) — A year after pleading guilty to the murders of four University of Idaho students, Bryan Kohberger is challenging his conviction.
According to a handwritten post-conviction petition, the criminology student claims he was "convinced to falsely confess" to the crimes. He claims he was swayed into the plea deal that landed him life in prison through "coercion, disinformation, false promises, and the withholding of exculpatory discovery."
While Kohberger claims he had ineffective counsel who "misrepresented" what life in prison would be like, NewsNation contributor Ashleigh Banfield told Hena Doba on Monday she believes Kohberger's just bored.
"Life in prison is really awful," she said. "And when you're his age, you're facing about 70 years of this last one year that he's had. He didn't like his last year. He's been in solitary. It's boring. He's tired of it."
Clue points to one sender of Nancy Guthrie notes, profiler says

Marriage isn't on the agenda for Ant Anstead and Renée Zellweger, at least not right now.
The Born Mechanic host, 47, shared an update on his five-year romance with the Oscar winner, 57, during an interview with The Telegraph. According to an article People published Tuesday, July 28, Anstead told The Telegraph that the couple isn't feeling any urgency to tie the knot. "I still believe in marriage, but right now we're really happy," he said, "We don't need the pressure of a label."
CraSH/imageSPACE / MEGA
The two have kept their romance largely out of the spotlight since they met in 2021 on the set of Anstead's discovery+ show, Celebrity IOU: Joyride. "Renée is a hands-on car girl. She used a grinder to cut metal, she was welding, she was on the spanners," Anstead said, per the report, noting she "never normally does [projects] outside film."
One of the first things that impressed Anstead about the Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy star was her confidence behind the wheel. "A lot of people in America don't drive stick [manual cars] but, on the first day of filming, we needed to relocate a car for a scene," he said, according to the article. "Ren jumps in, goes, 'I'll do it!', slams it into first, and off she goes. I'm like, 'Wow. This lady really knows her cars.'"

We've all heard the saying: If you wouldn't want it splashed across the front page of tomorrow's newspaper (or The Daily Upside newsletter), it's probably best not to say it at all.
The same rule applies when it comes to sharing sensitive estate planning information with general-purpose AI chatbots. It may seem like a harmless exercise to run one's trust-funding strategy or family business succession plans past the likes of Claude or ChatGPT, but doing so can actually subject that information to future discovery if the plan is challenged in court, according to a team of specialist attorneys at ArentFox Schiff. So advisors and their clients should utilize extreme caution when utilizing public generative AI tools as part of the estate planning process, especially in situations where a lot of wealth is at stake or a future estate dispute seems likely.
"It's fraught with risk when we recklessly invite AI into the attorney-advisor-client relationship," said Sarah Kerr Severson, a partner on ArentFox Schiff's private wealth and tax planning team. "There's no attorney-client privilege there. Courts have already confirmed that."

July 23 (Reuters) - Paramount Skydance must pause its $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery through August 17, a federal judge ruled on Thursday.
The move gives Paramount Skydance more time to argue against a potential months-long pause while the case plays out. The company has said such a prolonged delay would plunge the deal into uncertainty and could cost it more than $1 billion.
A California-led coalition of states have sued to block the deal, saying it would harm competition in film and television, hurting theaters and cable companies. The Writers Guild of America has filed a separate lawsuit alleging the deal would decrease demand for screenwriting work.
U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín in Oakland, California, previously paused the deal through August 3, when she would have held a hearing on whether to postpone the deal's closing for longer.

Major League Soccer (MLS) is set to investigate the circumstances surrounding Casemiro's high-profile move to Inter Miami.
Miami officially unveiled the former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder on Wednesday after he signed a two-year deal. The contract also includes an option to extend his stay until 2029.
However, the excitement around the signing has been overshadowed by an MLS investigation into an alleged tampering issue involving the acquisition of the Brazilian midfielder.
Under MLS rules, clubs can place players on a discovery list, giving them the first opportunity to negotiate with those players and preventing rival teams from pursuing them without first reaching an agreement.
LA Galaxy reportedly held Casemiro's discovery rights before Miami secured them in a deal believed to be worth around £750,000.

Earlier this year, the streaming and entertainment industry witnessed one of its most high-stakes megadeals ever, stunning industry observers. Not only is it historic in its size, but it is also predicted to disrupt Hollywood and the media business as we know it.
After years of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) struggling under the weight of billions of dollars in debt, compounded by declining cable viewership and fierce competition from streaming platforms, the company has been considering major strategic changes, including selling its entertainment **** ets to one of its rivals.
Several major players saw the potential in acquiring the media giant, and in December, Netflix announced it would acquire WBD's studios and streaming for $82.7 billion.
But in a surprise eleventh-hour move in late February, the David Ellison-run Paramount became the winner of this bidding war, offering $111 billion to acquire all of WBD's **** ets, including its studios, HBO, streaming platforms, games, and TV networks such as CNN and HGTV. Paramount was recently acquired by Ellison with significant support from his father, Larry Ellison — the Oracle chairman, world's sixth-richest person, and major Trump donor.
Paramount's offer was approved by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) in June. However, a federal judge just paused the deal after a lawsuit was filed on July 13 by a coalition of 12 state attorneys general.

(NewsNation) — Astronomers may have discovered the first moon outside of our solar system, and it may force them to reconsider the idea of what a "moon" is.
A new study published in Nature describes the discovery of a possible exomoon, but things get a little weird. Researchers noted the object could be an exomoon or it could be something else entirely that doesn't fall neatly into the category of moon or planet.
While Earth's singular moon is the most familiar, there are 891 moons orbiting planets and dwarf planets in our solar system, with more than 200 of those belonging to Saturn alone.

What a time for tech investors. Quantum computing looks like a remarkable follow-up to artificial intelligence (AI). Researchers at McKinsey estimate that quantum computing could create up to $2.7 trillion in economic value for companies worldwide by 2040. Quantum computers could unlock new possibilities across applications, ranging from drug discovery to cybersecurity and AI.
D-Wave Quantum (NYSE: QBTS) is a promising quantum computing company. Its quantum annealing systems are already commercially available, and the acquisition of Quantum Circuits earlier this year gives it a pathway to gate-model systems. As a result, the company can pursue a broad range of commercial opportunities.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
But is D-Wave Quantum stock actually a millionaire-maker? Investors may want to temper their expectations.
Many millionaire-maker stocks start out really small. That's because it's usually much easier for a stock's market cap to grow from $500 million to $5 billion than it is to go from $50 billion to $500 billion. It's just difficult to grow large numbers for all but the most exceptional businesses. D-Wave Quantum's current market cap of $6.2 billion doesn't seem huge at first glance. That's until you look at the actual business, which is still in its infancy.

Major League Soccer says it is investigating allegations of tampering by Inter Miami after the club signed Brazil midfielder Casemiro.
On Wednesday, Miami announced they had signed the 34-year-old - who left Manchester United at the end of last season - on a deal that runs to the end of the 2027 MLS campaign, with an option to extend until June 2029.

"The league is gathering all relevant information and will refrain from further comment until the review is complete," it added.
"While Inter Miami CF and the LA Galaxy have reached a settlement for the discovery priority [first rights] to sign Casemiro, the terms will be released upon conclusion of the tampering investigation."

Former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro has completed his transfer to Inter Miami – but the deal is now being investigated by Major League Soccer (MLS) amid claims of tampering.
The 34-year-old Brazil international, who was a free agent following the conclusion of his contract at Old Trafford last season, joins the Major League Soccer club on a deal that runs until the end of the 2027 MLS Sprint Season.
The agreement includes an option to extend his stay until June 2029, pending visa approval.
Casemiro's discovery rights were held by LA Galaxy, and by league rule that would have prevented Inter Miami from negotiating with him.
The teams reached a settlement that allowed Inter Miami to get the long-awaited signing done, but the league is still probing the tampering allegation.

Inter Miami tampering investigation, explained: Why signing of former United star Casemiro raised red flags originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
On the heels of the 2026 World Cup, club soccer seasons are getting back into full swing. Brazilian and former Manchester United midfielder Casemiro's move to Inter Miami is being investigated by the MLS for tampering.
The American soccer league has a system in place, called discovery rights, in which a player joining the MLS from another league can only negotiate with a club that has the player's rights. If a club signs a player without those discovery rights, it is required to make a payment and officially acquire their rights.
While Casemiro was signed as a free transfer, Miami will likely have to pay an additional fee for signing the Brazilian because the LA Galaxy had his discovery rights.
Here's the rundown on why Inter Miami's latest signing is being investigated by the MLS.

MIAMI (AP) — Inter Miami announced the signing of Brazil midfielder and five-time Champions League winner Casemiro on Wednesday, and Major League Soccer is now investigating whether the reigning league champion engaged in tampering to get that deal done.
The 34-year-old Casemiro — who appeared in all five of Brazil's matches at this year's World Cup, scoring one goal — is under contract with Inter Miami through the end of next year's sprint season, with an extension option through June 2029.

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge on Monday ordered Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery to halt their $81 billion merger for at least two weeks, allowing states that are challenging the deal more time to see their case through in court.
Twelve states, led by California, sued to block Paramount's pending buyout of Warner last week — alleging that such a combination would "extinguish competition" in Hollywood and lead to fewer choices for consumers, particularly moviegoers and cable customers across the U.S.
The states' top prosecutors called on Warner and Paramount to not close the transaction until after a court had time to fully evaluate their claims. And when the companies refused, they filed for a temporary restraining order — which is what District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín granted on Monday. That opens the door to a potential preliminary injunction that the states are also seeking to effectively block the deal.
"This is a critical first win in our case to ensure this megamerger never sees the light of day," California Attorney General Rob Bonta said in a statement Monday. "History tells the tale of what happens when a few people have great power over markets that are central to Americans' lives: fewer opportunities for more people, worse products and services for all people."
A Warner-Paramount tie-up would bring together two of the five last legacy studios in Hollywood — as well as a host of TV networks, ****** les filling streaming libraries and news operations. Warner's HBO Max, fan favorites like "Harry Potter" and even CNN would come under the same roof of Paramount-owned CBS, movies like "Top Gun" and the Paramount+ streaming service.

A cat rescue has been left "speechless" after a cat in their care gave birth to a kitten with two noses and two mouths.
PurrfectlyFeral in Llangedwyn, Powys, shared the discovery after the kitten was born with a rare congenital disorder called diprosopus, also known as craniofacial duplication.
Known as Janus cats, the condition is named after the mythological Roman god who is traditionally depicted with two faces and is extremely rare in cats.
Rescue founder Shelley Jones said most Janus kittens are either stillborn or survive only for a short time after birth, so the "little miracle", who has been named Gemini, is being monitored "around the clock".

It came in at just $1.525 billion, 33% below last year's $2.267 billion and last quarter's adjusted FCF of $2.294 billion (i.e., after deducting a one-time $2.8 billion bid termination fee).
There were plenty of reasons for the market to be negative on NFLX, which closed at a new 6-month low of $68.95 on Friday, July 17. That's down from its 3-month peak of $107.79 on April 16 and even lower than a recent June 25 trough price ($70.90).

Wall Street's patience with Netflix (NFLX) appears to be wearing thin.
Netflix shares plunged into the red at the opening bell on Friday as Wall Street digested a lackluster second quarter earnings report. The streaming giant's third-quarter revenue outlook missed expectations, and management offered little to reassure investors about slowing growth and engagement trends.
Analysts said the earnings report did little to ease concerns over Netflix's growth.
"At the moment, it's in no man's land," Bank of America Global Securities senior media ******* yst Jessica Reif Ehrlich told Yahoo Finance, of the company. "There's just not enough here to move the stock in any direction. There was nothing for the bulls, but there was certainly something for the bears."
One possible catalyst for the stock is an acquisition, Ehrlich told Yahoo Finance. Netflix walked away from a bidding war with Paramount Skydance (PSKY) over Warner Bros. Discovery in February. Investors could perceive a new deal that brings fresh IP through the door as a strong move for the streamer.

Harris Oakmark recently released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter for the "Oakmark Global Fund". A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. It is a non-diversified fund that focuses on long-term capital appreciation by investing in common stocks of U.S. and non-U.S. companies. In the second quarter, the fund (Investor Class) delivered a return of 7.89%, lagging the benchmark, the MSCI World Index's 13.76% return. Energy and industrials were the top performance contributors at the sector level, while health care and consumer discretionary detracted from performance. AI remains a key market theme. The firm focuses on evaluating companies based on their competitive advantages, long-term cash flow potential, and valuation, not predictions. In addition, you can check the Fund's top five holdings to determine its best picks for 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Oakmark Global Fund highlighted AstraZeneca PLC (NYSE:AZN) as a newly added position. AstraZeneca PLC (NYSE:AZN) is a leading multinational biopharmaceutical company focusing on the development and discovery of prescription medicines. On July 15, 2026, AstraZeneca PLC (NYSE:AZN) closed at $168.37 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $261.12 billion. AstraZeneca PLC (NYSE:AZN) posted a one-month return of -3.75%, while its shares gained 18.55% over the past 52 weeks.
Oakmark Global Fund stated the following regarding AstraZeneca PLC (NYSE:AZN) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
"AstraZeneca PLC (NYSE:AZN) is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. It researches, develops and commercializes prescription medicines designed to treat lung and breast cancers, cardiorenal diseases, respiratory problems and other rare diseases. We believe AstraZeneca's robust on-market portfolio and sector-leading late-stage pipeline provide an attractive growth profile. Moreover, we believe the company can build on its long track record of a productive research and development program, thanks to its innovative culture and exceptional management team. In our view, CEO Pascal Soriot is one of the industry's best executives, and he has cultivated a deep bench of talent, a robust decision-making framework and a differentiated R&D culture that should drive strong growth for years to come, in our view. Recent concerns over United States regulations have overshadowed AstraZeneca's merits and weighed on the broader pharmaceutical industry. This opened a window for us to purchase shares of this company at a price well below our estimate of its intrinsic value."

The NBA's investigation into Kawhi Leonard's deal with Aspiration keeps dragging on, but a new discovery shows the bizarre extent of the situation.
As the Clippers, Raptors, and Leonard await a decision from the NBA over the matter to continue their offseason business, more details of the alleged 'no-show' sponsorship deal are emerging.
A new detail is that Aspiration's marketing team went out of their way to find a way to integrate Leonard into a marketing campaign for their tree-growing initiatives.
The Athletic has revealed that Aspiration's employees presumed Leonard would feature in a marketing campaign after signing on to a $20 million endorsement deal. As a result, they came up with a campaign that made Leonard seem like Groot from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.
"The efforts went so far as to create images, reviewed by The Athletic, of Leonard as an offshoot of Marvel's Groot – Aspiration's purpose was a promise to plant trees to offset carbon footprints."

As more companies tap into the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate drug discovery and uncover novel solutions, Recursion stands out for the massive amount of data it can generate, as well as for its partnerships.
Each week, it uses robotics and computer vision to capture millions of cell experiments, potentially helping to speed up drug development. It currently has seven drugs in various clinical stages in its pipeline, and its candidate REC-4881, designed to treat a rare genetic condition that can lead to cancer, is one of the drugs that's furthest along in trials. REC-4881 has shown positive proof-of-concept data, with additional phase 1b/2 data expected in the first half of 2027.

Recursion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:RXRX) is one of the Best Penny Stocks to Invest In According to Billionaires. Recursion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:RXRX) is a biotechnology company that is building an AI-native discovery platform to industrialize drug discovery. Although still in the clinical stage, the company generates much of its revenue from key partnerships and collaborations with companies such as Takeda Pharmaceutical Co, Roche, Genentech, and more.
The stock gained roughly 19% over the past month. The gains were driven by Cathie Wood's ARK Investment buying 260,000 shares of Recursion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:RXRX) on June 24.
In addition, the company also highlighted clinical progress in its fiscal Q1 2026 earnings, released on May 6. The company noted that REC-1245, which is an RBM39-targeting cancer drug, showed good early safety and predictable dosing in its first 16 patients. Moreover, the REC-4881, which is aimed at the genetic disease FAP, also posted strong Phase 2 results and prompted FDA talks towards approval; updates for this candidate are expected in late 2026.
Financially, the company reported $6.5 million in revenue for the quarter, which was down from $14.7 million a year ago, due to a phase of the Roche partnership that was completed last year, so there's less revenue to recognize now. Notably, Recursion was able to reduce its net loss to $117.5 million. This is roughly half of last year's $202.5 million.
The Street remains bullish on the stock, with ****** ysts expecting more than 76% upside from the current level.

Nobody likes to pay full price for anything if they can avoid it and Vertiv (VRT) just might offer a compelling discount. No, I don't think the green flag is being dropped by the fundamentals. And while the Barchart Technical Opinion indicator coincidentally rates VRT stock as a 48% Buy, I'm more focused on how market psychology may impact the mechanical gyrations of price discovery.

Artisan Partners, an investment management firm, issued its first-quarter 2026 investor letter for the "Artisan Mid Cap Value Fund". A copy of this letter is available for download here. In Q1 2026, the portfolio underperformed the benchmark Russell Midcap Value Index as the market favored momentum-driven stocks over quality factors. Some holdings faced company-specific setbacks and negative sentiment. The Fund's Investor Class: ARTQX returned -4.93%, Advisor Class: APDQX declined by -4.90%, and Institutional Class: APHQX fell by -4.97%, all trailing the Index's 3.68% gain. The equity market in the quarter was mixed, with mid- and small-cap indices showing resilience despite lagging large-cap growth stocks. Volatility increased, initially fueled by interest in AI and private credit, but escalated after the outbreak of war in Iran, leading to rising oil prices. Sector performance varied, with energy leading the gains. The Fund continues to seek companies capable of value growth during market dislocations at attractive entry points. Also, review the Fund's top five holdings to see its best picks for 2026.
In its first-quarter 2026 investor letter, Artisan Mid Cap Value Fund highlighted Pinterest, Inc. (NYSE:PINS). Pinterest, Inc. (NYSE:PINS) is a social media and visual discovery platform that enables users to find ideas, such as recipes, home, and style inspiration. On July 7, 2026, Pinterest, Inc. (NYSE:PINS) closed at $22.42 per share. One-month return of Pinterest, Inc. (NYSE:PINS) was 2.99%, and its shares lost 37.53% over the past 52 weeks. Pinterest, Inc. (NYSE:PINS) has a market capitalization of $12.56 billion.
Artisan Mid Cap Value Fund stated the following regarding Pinterest, Inc. (NYSE:PINS) in its Q1 2026 investor letter:
"Among the biggest decliners were ICON, Humana, Gartner and Pinterest, Inc. (NYSE:PINS), each of which dropped by 30% or more during the quarter. Pinterest's recent results have been impacted by macroeconomic headwinds, particularly tariffs, which have weighed on advertising spending by large retail customers. Compared with larger social media peers, Pinterest is less diversified and more exposed to consumer-driven categories, making it more sensitive to these pressures. While we continue to view digital advertising as a structurally attractive market with growth likely to exceed that of the broader economy, we chose to exit the position in favor of more compelling opportunities. Nearly four years into the current management team's tenure, progress on key priorities, including user growth, engagement, monetization and profitability, has been slower than expected."
