Abishek Porel, the Delhi Capitals and Bengal cricketer, has been denied bail in an alleged rape case involving a medical student. A court on Friday sent him to judicial custody for 14 days.

Porel was arrested on August 11 in Hooghly after being questioned over a complaint filed by a young woman, who accused him of rape, blackmail and other offences. He was later medically examined before being produced before the Chinsurah court.

"There was a case lodged against him and a court order to arrest him. He was arrested late last night. He will be produced in court today," Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunar Bhushan Singh told PTI.
According to the complaint, the woman said Porel entered into a relationship with her after promising to marry her. She alleged that after their relationship ended, he threatened to share private photographs of her. Police registered a case under 19 sections, with most of the charges being non-bailable.

The complaint also refers to an alleged incident in Delhi on April 2, 2026. The woman claimed she was confined, not given food and deliberately kept isolated, leaving her physically weak and unable to walk properly.

She further alleged that both families had discussed marriage, but the relationship later deteriorated after she allegedly found out about Porel's involvement with other women.
The case had previously reached the Calcutta High Court. Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya directed Magra Police Station to seize electronic devices, including Porel's mobile phone, and submit an investigation report.

At the August 11 hearing, police told the court that Porel had been arrested and would be produced before the Chinsurah court. The cricketer has now been denied bail and remanded to judicial custody for 14 days while the case proceeds.

Baltimore has sued prediction market operators Kalshi and Polymarket, accusing both of running unlicensed sportsbooks in the city.
Mayor Brandon Scott and the City Council filed the complaints Thursday in Circuit Court for Baltimore City.
The city says both platforms let residents bet on game winners, point spreads, point totals, and player statistics. Those propositions match products sold by licensed sportsbooks, according to the complaints.
Both companies call them event contracts. However, Baltimore argues they function as sports bets and amount to unlawful gambling under Maryland law.
Furthermore, the lawsuit claims that the missing licenses free both firms from the tax bills, audits, and player-protection rules that licensed operators carry.

Aug 13 (Reuters) - The Los Angeles County sheriff's department agreed to speed up licensing for people who want to carry concealed ‌weapons, to settle a U.S. government lawsuit accusing it of systematically ‌and unconstitutionally denying Californians' Second Amendment rights.
A settlement of the U.S. Department of Justice's lawsuit was filed on Thursday in Los Angeles federal court, and requires a judge's approval. The sheriff did not admit wrongdoing in agreeing to settle.
While Republican President Donald Trump's administration is regularly at odds with officials in Democratic-led California, ‌its lawsuit last September ⁠focused more on bureaucracy issues than policy differences.
Los Angeles officials were accused of violating citizens' right to bear arms ⁠by typically waiting nine months to review license applications, and sometimes more than two years to interview applicants.
According to the complaint, the sheriff received 3,982 applications for new concealed carry licenses between January 2024 and March 2025 but approved ‌just two.

Miami junior running back Jordan Lyle was arrested on Thursday on charges of aggravated fleeing and eluding law enforcement, according to court records in Broward County, Florida.
The aggravated fleeing and eluding law enforcement are each felony complaints. Lyle also faces a misdemeanor complaint of reckless driving.
"We are aware of an incident involving student-athlete Jordan Lyle," a University of Miami spokesperson said in a statement on Friday, via the Miami Herald. "As due legal process runs its course, we will have no further comment at this time."
Lyle, 20, was booked into the Broward Main Jail of the Sheriff's Office on an arrest warrant from the Sunrise Police Department and was released later in the day. The charges against Lyle carry a combined $55,000 bond.
Last season as a sophomore, Lyle rushed for 108 yards and 1 touchdown on 35 carries. He was limited to six games due to a high ankle sprain suffered in the Hurricanes' season-opening 27-24 win over Notre Dame. As a freshman, Lyle compiled 400 rushing yards on 54 carries with 4 TDs.

Lord Sugar says American Express refused to increase his credit-card limit despite his estimated £1.138 billion fortune, leaving the famously outspoken businessman furious with the company's decision.
The 79-year-old Apprentice star said he spent around an hour on the phone with American Express and was transferred between four different people while trying to get his spending limit raised. He eventually reached a representative in Brighton who, according to Sugar, recognized who he was and was familiar with his financial position.
That apparently made no difference. Sugar said the representative still could not approve his request because it was rejected "due to their system," prompting him to take his frustration public on X.
The complaint quickly produced a different question from followers: why would somebody worth more than £1 billion need a higher credit-card limit in the first place? Sugar's answer was characteristically blunt, he said he does not carry bags of cash around and needs a card for the same basic reason other people do.
Sugar described the experience on X on Monday, saying what should have been a request to increase his credit limit became a lengthy telephone call with American Express. He said he was transferred between four representatives before eventually reaching an employee at the company's Brighton operation. "My request was refused due to their system," Sugar wrote, according to The Sun, which also reported that American Express had been approached for comment.

What would happen if a team just stayed on the field? I'm sure there is a rule against it.

As of the 2021 season, Rule 7.04 in the Official Baseball Rules was amended to read:
"Protesting a game shall never be permitted, regardless of whether such complaint is based on judgment decisions by the umpire or an allegation that an umpire misapplied these rules or otherwise rendered a decision in violation of these rules."
But baseball has to change a rule. If a run can be given 10 minutes after an inning has ended, a team should be allowed to appeal at the same time. It can't be a one-way street.

NEW DELHI: Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has opened up about an incident that led to his expulsion from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru in 2000.

Harbhajan, who was among the first group of trainees at the NCA, recalled how he tore up a diet chart after repeatedly complaining that the food being served did not match the prescribed diet. He said the incident was later used as the reason for his removal.
Harbhajan said the NCA had a fixed diet plan for its trainees, but the food served did not follow the chart. According to him, repeated complaints did not lead to any change.

The former India spinner said his frustration eventually boiled over and he tore the diet chart.

"Waha se mujhe nikaal diya gaya. Woh meri galti nahi thi. Main aaj bhi is baat ko khule aam kehta hoon, kyunki woh hamara haq tha. Jo hamara khaana tha, woh achha nahi tha. [They removed me from there. It was not my mistake, I say this openly even today. It was our right. The food was not good there]," the former India spinner said on cricketnextofficial.

"Wahan jo rules aur regulations the, woh yahi the ki humein bahut kuch padhaya ja raha tha, sikhaya ja raha tha. Ek chart lagaya tha, ***** ein tha ki ye diet honi chahiye, expert ki diet ke hisaab se humein woh diet milni chahiye. Lekin woh khaana mil nahi raha tha. [Back then, the rules and regulations were such that we were told and taught a lot, and a chart was put up for the diet. But we were not getting food as per that diet. Harbhajan said he believed his decision to speak up was necessary because the problems with the diet plan would not have been addressed otherwise.

"But maybe till someone does something like this, things don't change. I was fighting for the rights. If I had not stood up, even today the same diet plan would have been followed. The plan changed, I was also removed, that is a different thing, but it was not my fault. There were some people in the BCCI who did not want someone who could stand up and question them," Harbhajan added.

Most of the available pool of tariff revenue has been disbursed back to U.S. companies, but American consumers are still looking for their share of the refunds.
As of the end of July, about $100 billion in tariff refunds were sent to the U.S. Department of Treasury to be disbursed to approved importers, according to a Tuesday filing to the U.S. Court of International Trade. The total is about 60% of the $166 billion in revenues collected from import taxes under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which were struck down by the Supreme Court in February.
Some U.S. consumers, however, are getting antsy that they haven't seen any of that sum reach their own wallets. Last month, New York resident Tyasia Johns filed a class action lawsuit against discount retailer Five Below, claiming it failed to return the tariff refunds it received to customers who actually paid for the levies.
Johns alleged Five Below passed down the cost of the IEEPA tariffs to consumers through increased prices and was able to preserve its profits—seeing a 22.9% year-over-year increase in net sales to $4.76 billion in 2025—through these price increases. According to the lawsuit, Five Below has not confirmed whether it has applied for or received refunds through the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, or if it intends to pass down those refunds to consumers.
The complaint demanded injunctive relief and an award of actual damages to class members, but did not include the prospective size of the class or specific magnitude of damages.

Aug 6 (Reuters) - Stade Francais said on Thursday that it had ‌been the victim of a ‌cyberattack that affected part of its information system.
French media reported that attackers had published identity documents belonging to 18 players as proof of the breach ‌and demanded a ⁠ransom, threatening to release the remaining documents if payment ⁠was not made by August 15.
"Immediate containment, investigation and recovery measures have been implemented to secure the affected systems ‌and ensure business continuity," the French rugby club said in a statement.
The club said its online sales platforms, including ticketing and merchandise websites, ‌had not been affected and continued to operate normally.
Stade Francais declined to comment on ‌any communications from those behind the attack or on information circulated by third parties. It added that it ‌had filed a complaint with the relevant authorities.

Someone is collecting signatures that might kill a racetrack by telling people it will save it. That is not a typo. Paid canvassers in Nashville were caught on hidden camera telling residents that signing their petition would protect the Fairgrounds Speedway from being torn down by corporate developers. The petition actually does the exact opposite. It strips racing's legal protections from the city charter and tries to open the land to housing construction. Dale Earnhardt Jr. sat down with Marcus Smith, Jeff Burton, and Matt Weaver to talk about it.
"My question is, if it's true, which there's video evidence of these folks seeking these signatures, stating false information or just incorrect information, how can that not be taken to de-legitimize the 50,000, 60,000 signatures they need?" said Dale Jr. on Wednesday's episode of The Dale Jr. Download.

California is asking a federal judge to throw out Tory Lanez's $100 million federal lawsuit over his prison stabbing.
According to newly filed court documents reviewed by Complex, Attorney General Rob Bonta's office submitted a motion on Wednesday (July 29) seeking to dismiss every claim against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, arguing the agency cannot legally be sued under the federal law Lanez is relying on. Specifically, the AG is claiming that the Eleventh Amendment to the Constitution gives the state immunity from being sued in federal court.
The amendment says, "The Judicial power of the United States shall not be construed to extend to any suit in law or equity, commenced or prosecuted against one of the United States by Citizens of another State, or Citizens or Subjects of any Foreign State." The AG's office makes the argument that this prohibition applies as well to any action against a state by one of its own citizens.
The motion asks the court to dismiss Lanez's claims without giving his attorneys an opportunity to amend the complaint.

Social media has recently been flooded with clips of pro athletes lamenting that their multimillion-dollar contracts don't go as far as people think. While such complaints can be easy to dunk on, the underlying point is important. The problem is the messenger.
The recent wave may have started with resurfaced clips of JJ Redick, one from February 2024 and another from March 2024, explaining how taxes and other costs can dramatically reduce a player's take-home pay.
"I think people should listen, because they're telling the truth," Chris Bosh recently told Front Office Sports. "And it's really interesting how people don't want to listen to that, but if I told you that player X is signing a three-year, $150 million deal, you'll believe it. It's not $150 million. That's what they're trying to get people to understand."
Financial advisors who work with athletes say the public often overestimates how wealthy professional athletes actually are, especially given taxes, short careers, and, in some cases, financial mismanagement.

North Carolina isn't saying much about UNC football G.M. Michael Lombardi, who has been placed on paid administrative leave. Lombardi had something to say on Friday night, via his attorney.
"Michael hasn't been told anything about the nature of UNC's investigation and welcomes the opportunity to clear his name, which has already been sullied by baseless statements and innuendo on social media," lawyer Tom Mars said, via Pete Thamel of ESPN. "He is fully cooperating with UNC and expects the investigation will be swift, thorough, and fair. Michael would ask that people have the decency to let the process run its course before jumping to any conclusions about the nature of the investigation or whether there's any merit to whatever has been alleged."
North Carolina has said that it is investigating "allegations" regarding Lombardi. Thamel reported on Monday that the situation "stems from a human resources complaint filed by a former UNC front office employee."
It's not unusual for the subject of an investigation to know nothing in the early stages. In many cases, the employer speaks to the person against whom accusations are made as the last step, after all other relevant information is gathered. When UNC interviews Lombardi, he'll get an idea pretty quickly as to what it's about.
For now, he's still getting paid. He's just not working. Whether he returns depends on the outcome of the investigation.

According to SPORT, FC Barcelona have officially been notified of the complaint filed by Atletico Madrid over the club's pursuit of Julian Alvarez.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has opened disciplinary proceedings into the matter and given the Catalan club a deadline to submit their response.
The complaint centres on allegations that the Blaugrana held discussions with the Argentine striker while he remains under contract at Atlético until 2030.
The notification from the RFEF informs Barcelona that a formal case has been opened and grants the club several days to present its arguments.

Saltburn Cricket Club have suspended a player, humorously called "Clicky Ponting", after he was accused of cheating during a local league match by clicking his fingers to make it sound like the batter had edged the ball.

The incident, which happened during Saltburn's second XI win over Norton, went viral on social media after video footage appeared to show the fielder making the sound just before the wicketkeeper completed the catch.

The umpire gave the batter out, sparking widespread criticism online.
Responding to the controversy, Saltburn Cricket Club, an English outfit, said they were taking the allegations seriously and had suspended the player while an investigation is underway.

In a statement, the club said, "We are treating this allegation with the utmost seriousness and, as a family-centric club, we are fully cooperating with the NYS League's investigation."
The statement added, "The player at the centre of the complaint has been suspended and will not play again for the club this season or in the foreseeable future, pending the outcome of this investigation."

Screenwriter Russell T Davies has described the death of his husband to an aggressive brain tumour as his "greatest loss".
Speaking on the On the Marie Curie Couch podcast, the Doctor Who writer opened up about Andrew Smith, who died in September 2018, following eight years of treatment for glioblastoma multiforme.
The couple had been together for 20 years and married in 2012.
The Swansea-born writer, who was also behind Channel 4 shows It's a Sin and Tip Toe, said it was "hard work" looking after his late husband, but that he would have gone through it for another 50 years "without a single complaint".
Davies said he had not been with Smith at his appointment when he was first diagnosed because the couple thought it was just an "ordinary meeting" with the hospital.

NEW YORK, July 27 (Reuters) - The former JPMorgan Chase banker whose lurid ****** ual harassment lawsuit went viral added new claims and defendants on Monday, saying the largest U.S. bank's acceptance of racism and ****** ual coercion irreparably destroyed his ‌career.
Chirayu Rana said racism was ingrained in the culture of his otherwise all-white leveraged finance team, where his South Asian heritage "became ‌the punchline for a stream of degrading jokes," including calling him a "monkey" and "brown boy."
JPMorgan has said it believed Rana's allegations were meritless. Neither the bank nor its lawyers had an immediate comment.
In an 82-page complaint, Rana, who is of Nepali descent, added allegations that colleagues suggested he transact in rupees, and one texted that he should "run before we call ICEE {sic} on your family," referring to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
