Khadija Shaw netted a brace while Mary Fowler was also on target as The Cityzens were victorious on opening day.
It was the visitors who almost got off to a dream start. They won a corner inside the opening 30 seconds, but Marie Levasseur saw her effort cleared off the goal-line.
Océane Hurtré then almost capitalised on a back-pass, but home keeper Ayaka Yamashita did just about enough to deal with the danger.
At the other end, Shaw met Lauren Hemp's cross, but she couldn't beat Sophie Baggaley. Hemp soon produced another cross from the left which was met by Shaw, but she was again unable to take advantage,
Manchester City captain Alex Greenwood and Aoba Fujino had further efforts on the Birmingham City goal, but Baggaley was able to produce saves on both occasions. Fowler then slipped the ball to Shaw, who looked certain to score, but Neve Herron defended well and managed to perform a block.

Manchester City have agreed a deal with Lille to sign Ayyoub Bouaddi for €95 million plus another €5m in bonuses. He joins on a five-year contract with the option of another year (h/t Fabrice Hawkins).

The Cityzens needed a holding midfielder to replace Rodri following his departure. They have now turned to the 18-year-old star to provide the ball-winning they will miss.
Bouaddi has played more as a box-to-box midfielder in Ligue 1 but caught the eye at the 2026 World Cup with Morocco operating as a holding midfielder.
His composure on the ball and ability to win it back stood out. City have decided to take the gamble and sign him. He can partner Elliot Anderson in the centre of the park.

To soccer (ahem, football) fans, Erling Haaland needs no introduction. The lumbering Norwegian striker tore through Bundesliga defenses time and time again before joining Manchester City in 2022. Though the "Cityzens" had already won the Premier League four of the previous five seasons, the addition of Haaland took them to new heights as the bleach-blonde striker poured in a record 35 goals in his first campaign. He followed that with another 31 in 2023-24, leading City to an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League ***** le.
This summer, Haaland has introduced himself to the rest of the world as he has led Norway—now the 2026 World Cup's de-facto Cinderella—to a quarterfinal clash with mighty England. Before Saturday's showdown, however, Haaland was spotted getting some much needed R&R … on the golf course.

Enzo Maresca has been hired by Manchester City as Pep Guardiola’s replacement on a three-year contract.
The Italian returns for his third spell at the club, having served as Guardiola’s ******* istant manager before becoming Chelsea’s head coach in 2024 and lifting the Europa Conference League and Club World Cup in 2025.
He would remain at the Blues until January 2026, when his relationship broke down with the club’s hierarchy to an extent that he saw fit to resign from his position on New Year’s Day.
Maresca’s move to Manchester was stalled by his former club negotiating for a compensatory package should their former boss join the Cityzens.
On joining the eight-time Premier League winners, Maresca said: “Manchester City is a club I know very well and to have the chance to manage this team is a brilliant opportunity for me.

James Trafford has accepted that he may need to leave Manchester City if he is to become England's number one goalkeeper.

The 23-year-old made only fourPremier League appearances for the Cityzens, though did feature prominently as Pep Guardiola's side won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
Trafford is currently with the England squad at this summer'sWorld Cup, where he will provide competition and cover for Jordan Pickford and Dean Henderson.
Speaking ahead of England's opener against Croatia tomorrow, Trafford admitted he needs regular football at club level if he is to challenge for a place in Thomas Tuchel's side.

Paris Saint-Germain academy product Hermann Malonga (18) is set to sign his first professional contract at Manchester City, as per a report from Le Parisien.
Last summer, it was Mahamadou Sangaré who left PSG to sign for Manchester City. The centre-forward impressed with the academy side, notably in the UEFA Youth League, and he now looks set to be joined in Greater Manchester by another ******* i Parisien.
Le Parisien understands that Malonga, a centre-back, is also set for a move to the Premier League side. Like Sangaré, he will move on a free transfer. PSG had looked to sign Malonga to a first professional deal, but their attempts to retain the centre-back have seemingly failed.
Instead, he will join the Cityzens. He will sign a five-year deal with the club, who have scouted him intently, particularly in the UEFA Youth League. Le Parisien understands that a loan move away from the Etihad is likely.

Manchester City are drawing up contingency plans in their search for a marquee midfielder, identifying Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali as a primary alternative should a deal for Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson collapse. Following Bernardo Silva’s departure from the Etihad Stadium, City’s hierarchy—led by director of football Hugo Viana—are prioritising a high-energy midfield reinforcement. England international Anderson remains the top target, but securing his signature is proving complex and costly. Nottingham Forest have already rejected City’s opening formal proposal, holding out for a potentially record-breaking fee for the 23-year-old. While City prepare to go back with a second bid, the Cityzens are wary of being priced out and have placed Tonali high on their backup shortlist. Tonali, who has been closely monitored by several elite clubs including ****** nal and Manchester United, could leave St James’ Park this summer. While Anthony Gordon’s high-profile move to Barcelona has eased some financial restrictions, Newcastle’s lack of European football means a significant midfield departure remains highly likely.
Renowned for his work rate, ball-winning ability and progression from deep, the ‘brilliant’ Tonali could slot into a midfield pivot alongside Rodri or fill a more advanced central role. However, moving for Tonali would not be without obstacles. Newcastle are reportedly holding out for a fee between £80m and £100m. For City, the path forward is clear: they will push hard to close the gap with Nottingham Forest on Anderson’s valuation, but if negotiations stall, Etihad chiefs are ready to redirect their financial power toward tempting Tonali to Manchester instead.
