During the recent Orioles press conference about the Kyle Bradish contract extension, principal owner David Rubenstein said of his president of baseball operations Mike Elias that "we couldn't be more pleased" regarding the job that he has done.
Taking that at face value, the question has been answered, Elias will remain the boss of the Orioles front office no matter what happens with the remainder of the season. There are plenty of examples across the sports landscape of why not to take those kinds of proclamations at face value. The "dreaded vote of confidence" is its own recognized part of the manager/GM hot seat. Almost ****** ody ever directly says, "Things need to improve or we're going to fire this guy." They just say nice things when asked and fire the person when they want to fire them.

The Orioles have less than a week to decide whether they'll be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline. Their two series before that Aug. 3 date, a three-game trip to Detroit and three at home against the Phillies, could be critically important for deciding the near-term direction of the club.
Last night, the O's looked like a team that plans to stay in the postseason race, winning the opener against the Tigers in a series with big wild card implications. Even with ace Kyle Bradish suffering a rare bad outing, the Birds used a 12-hit, three-homer offensive explosion and a superb combined effort from four relievers to secure an 8-5 victory. Check out Alex Church's recap of the high-scoring affair.
With so many teams jostling for position on the fringes of the wild card race, we're at the point where every win (and every loss) shuffles the Orioles' status in the pecking order. Their victory last night pulled them back within two games of the rained-out Guardians for the final wild card spot, and inched them a game behind the idle Twins. The O's also pulled even with the Mariners, who lost yesterday, and possibly a half game ahead of the Astros, who were trailing in Anaheim at the time of this writing.
When you see the standings laid out like that, it's more than reasonable to think that the Orioles have a good shot at earning a postseason spot. But all it takes is another losing streak and suddenly the O's could find themselves in a lousy position again. Two days from now, they could be four games out of wild card position and languishing behind three or four other teams once more. The margin for error at this point is incredibly slim, even with so many other AL teams struggling to get hot.

Throughout the Red Sox 15 game winning streak, they leaned heavily on spectacular starting pitching. Unfortunately, they didn’t get that tonight.
Eduardo Rivera was given the opening role for the third time over the course of the winning streak, and this time, the well finally ran dry. He gave up four runs before the national anthem was over and left the mound with over 40 pitches thrown while only recording two outs. He had zero fastball command, which the Orioles quickly figured out, and then sat on his slider to deliver the knockout punch.
Sadly, that’s pretty much the story of game. From there, Kyle Bradish kept the the Sox offense off balance, and there was never a real rally despite the lineup putting the ball in play most of the night.
The bigger story now is the conclusion of the winning streak and what it’s done for the season. In short, its ensured there’s going to be meaning baseball here for August and September (and hopefully October too, but they still have to earn that). It’s also going to remembered as the signature run of this team. They went from dead in the water and other teams circling the ballpark like buzzards waiting to see what they could pick from the carcass at the trade deadline, to in possession of Wild Card spot. Incredible stuff!
Many fans gave the team a standing ovation at the end of the game, and even though their performance tonight squashed what could have been an all time crazy atmosphere, the group that ensured there’s going to be many more crazy atmospheres for the rest of the summer deserved it.

BOSTON — There are few wins the Baltimore Orioles needed more than the one they secured in Game 2 of their doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.
A loss would’ve dropped them to five games back of Boston for the third wild-card spot in the American League. Instead, they jumped out to an early lead and let Kyle Bradish do the rest. Baltimore (50-53) cruised to a 5-1 win that ended the Red Sox’s historic 15-game winning streak and ensured it would leave Boston a manageable three games out of a playoff spot with the trade deadline 12 days away.
The Orioles, having lost 6-3 in Game 1 of the doubleheader, put up four runs on Red Sox opener Eduardo Rivera in the first inning. They reached base five times in the frame, including a two-run single by Dylan Beavers and an RBI double by Johnathan Rodríguez for his first hit as an Oriole, chasing Rivera from the game before he could record a third out.
It was all Bradish would need. Making his first start since signing a five-year, $90 million extension with the Orioles on Saturday, the right-hander kept the red-hot Boston lineup at bay with six innings of one-run baseball. Bradish allowed just four hits and a walk with four strikeouts, generating all nine of his whiffs with his curveball (five) and slider (four).
The Red Sox’s only run against him came in the fourth, when first baseman Willson Contreras doubled with two outs and scored on a single by designated hitter Masataka Yoshida. Bradish didn’t allow another runner to advance past first base the rest of the way.

The Baltimore Orioles ended Boston’s franchise record-tying 15-game winning streak behind Kyle Bradish’s six innings of one-run ball, defeating the Red Sox 5-1 in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Wednesday.
It was Boston’s first loss since a 10-2 setback to Washington at Fenway Park on July 1.
The Red Sox won the opener 6-3 to match the club’s 80-year-old record. Boston’s 1946 team that won 15 straight was led by Ted Williams and won the American League pennant.
This year’s Red Sox streak was the longest in the majors since St. Louis also won 15 straight in September of 2021.
Dylan Beavers had a two-run single in a four-run first inning for Baltimore, which avoided a three-game sweep and won for the 11th time in 16 games.

The Orioles jumped on Boston’s starter Eduardo Rivera early and used that early offensive explosion to propel them to victory. After Taylor Ward barely missed a leadoff double into the right field corner, Pete Alonso started the rally with a ground rule double over the low wall in right. Gunnar Henderson then worked a four-pitch walk to bring former Red Sox Tyler O’Neill to the plate. TON hit a hard grounder to third, but Caleb Durbin’s throw to second was bobbled by Anthony Seigler, leaving everyone safe and the bases loaded.
After Christian Encarnacion-Strand struck out, Dylan Beavers stepped into the box looking to make sure the early opportunity wouldn’t go to waste. Rivera’s first-pitched slider bounced well in front of home plate, skipping past catcher Carlos Narváez and allowing Alonso to score from first.
Rivera went back to slider 2-2, but the breaking ball caught too much of the plate, and Beavers flipped it into center field for a two-run single. Johnathan Rodríguez then capped off the rally, lining a ball just over the head of Jaren Durran in left and off the Green Monster. The double scored Beavers from first, gave Baltimore a 4-0 lead and chased Rivera after just 41 pitches and two outs.
The early four-run lead was more than enough for Kyle Bradish, as he continued his recent run of good form. The newly minted $90M man, in his first start since his extension, breezed through the 1st inning on nine pitches. He got Seigler to ground out to second on two pitches, got Ceddane Rafaela to fly out to right on three pitches and punctuated the inning with a punch out of Wilyer Abreu.
The Red Sox made Bradish work a little harder in the 2nd, making him throw nine pitches to get the first two outs before getting their first base runner via a Durbin walk. Duran then sent his own hard liner to left, but it was hit right at Ward to end the inning.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Right-hander Kyle Bradish will receive $23 million to cover his final two seasons of arbitration eligibility as part of his $90 million, five-year contract with the Baltimore Orioles that starts next year.
Bradish gets salaries of $10 million in 2027, $13 million in 2028, $17 million in 2029, $22 million in 2030 and $28 million in 2031 under the deal announced Saturday.
He would get a $1 million ***** ignment bonus if traded, payable by the acquiring team. He also receives a suite on road trips.
Bradish has a $3.55 million salary this year after beating the team in arbitration. The new deal covers what would have been Bradish's final two years of arbitration eligibility under the rules of the current labor contract.
The 29-year-old is 6-9 with a 3.61 ERA in 19 starts this year, his first full season back from Tommy John surgery in 2024. He finished fourth in AL Cy Young Award voting in 2023 and is 25-24 with a 3.50 ERA in five major league seasons, all with the Orioles.

The Orioles focus for much of today is on the future. They made a few draft picks, including seventh overall pick Eric Booth Jr., a high school outfielder from Mississippi. Hopefully a few of the youngsters they call on this weekend will turn into quality Orioles a few years from now.
The 2026 Orioles, however, are still hoping that they can win on the field right now. At seven games under .500, things aren’t great. But they have won two in a row, and are only three games out of the final wild card spot, which is currently occupied by the sub-.500 Seattle Mariners. The AL is so poor that a bad team (or two) is probably going to play meaningful October baseball.
In order for the Orioles to be that bad team, they need to beat up on the few teams that are currently below them in the standings. They did that in game one with the Royals on Friday. Another win tonight would make it three in a row.
The pitching matchup favors them. Kyle Bradish, when on, is a stud atop the rotation. Noah Cameron hasn’t been as good this year as he was in his debut last year. But he throws with his left hand, and sometimes that is enough to take the Orioles down.
Craig Albernaz mostly has his lineup for left-handed starters on display tonight. That means Coby Mayo and Tyler ONeill get prominent spots. But it’s the left-handed Jackson Holliday at second base rather than right-handed Blaze Alexander. Hollliday has been hot lately, and actually has better numbers again southpaws than he does righties. Alexander has been torching righties, not lefties. So, it’s a logical decision.

The Baltimore bats couldn't deliver in the clutch, and a strong Kyle Bradish start went to waste, as the O's dropped their series finale in Cincinnati 3-2.
The O's came into the bottom of the 9th trailing 3-1 after struggling to get their bats going all afternoon. The pinch-hitting Dylan Beavers worked a leadoff walk to put the winning run on base. Jackson Holliday then entered for Jeremiah Jackson, with the former No.1 overall pick correctly challenging a 3-1 pitch to also reach via walk. The red-hot Blaze Alexander then battled Reds closer Emilio Pagán, finally getting ahold of a 2-2 cutter and sending a single into left to load the bases.
With the bases loaded and one out, former All-Star Gunnar Henderson stepped to the plate. After falling behind 1-2, Gunnar just missed a fastball up and away, sending a fly out to deep left field. The sac fly allowed Beavers to score and cut the deficit to one.
That put the weight of the Orioles' chances on the newly named All-Star Adley Rutschman. The Orioles' catcher fell behind like Henderson and could only send a fly ball to center, ending the game with the tying run on second base.
The rally in the 9th was the Orioles' first good scoring opportunity since the 6th inning. With the O's trailing 2-0. After Adley Rutschman started off the frame with a fly out, Taylor Ward got the rally going with a double to the left field gap. Pete Alonso then sent a rocket of a ground ball to short, where a bobble by Elly De La Cruz allowed Ward to advance on a 6-3 groundout. That brought up Coby Mayo, the lefty masher, against Reds' left-handed starter Nick Lodolo. The southpaw left a 1-1 changeup over the plate and Mayo smashed it into left field to bring home Ward.

With the bases loaded and one out, former All-Star Gunnar Henderson stepped to the plate. After falling behind 1-2, Gunnar just missed a fastball up and away, sending a fly out to deep left field. The sac fly allowed Beavers to score and cut the deficit to one.
That put the weight of the Orioles' chances on the newly named All-Star Adley Rutschman. The Orioles' catcher fell behind like Henderson and could only send a fly ball to center, ending the game with the tying run on second base.
The rally in the 9th was the Orioles' first good scoring opportunity since the 6th inning. With the O's trailing 2-0. After Adley Rutschman started off the frame with a fly out, Taylor Ward got the rally going with a double to the left field gap. Pete Alonso then sent a rocket of a ground ball to short, where a bobble by Elly De La Cruz allowed Ward to advance on a 6-3 groundout. That brought up Coby Mayo, the lefty masher, against Reds' left-handed starter Nick Lodolo. The southpaw left a 1-1 changeup over the plate and Mayo smashed it into left field to bring home Ward.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Kyle Bradish pitched eight shutout innings, Taylor Ward hit a leadoff home run against his former team and the Baltimore Orioles extended their winning streak to three games Monday night with a 6-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.
Coby Mayo hit a three-run homer and Bradish (5-7) struck out nine as the Orioles improved to 4-3 on a nine-game trip.
Bradish allowed six hits and one walk. He has 21 strikeouts over his last two starts.
Baltimore was already without second baseman Jackson Holliday (groin) when third baseman Blaze Alexander (knee) exited in the third — leaving outfielder Leody Taveras to play third for the first time in seven seasons. Taveras finished with two hits.
Jorge Soler homered late for the Angels in his return from the injured list, but Sam Aldegheri (2-3) gave up five runs and five hits over 4 2/3 innings. Los Angeles had scored 27 runs over its previous three games.
