While concern continues to rise about the cost of groceries, another major issue is quietly cropping up in your neighborhood: local grocery stores closing.
During its June 2025 earnings call, Kroger announced that it would shutter 60 locations over the next 18 months, citing underperformance. The closures also affect other brands under the company umbrella, including Fred Meyer, Fry's Food and Drug, Harris Teeter, Foods Co, Food 4 Less, King Soopers, Mariano's, Pick 'n Save, and QFC.
Many consumers struggling with higher food costs have turned to discount grocery stores for relief, but those are also winking out of sight in some areas. Aldi is another chain closing stores in 2026, with locations shuttering in Minnesota, Illinois, Texas, and Wisconsin. While the chain has plans to expand up to 3,200 locations by 2028, it needs to cut underperforming stores to reach that goal.
Grocery Outlet also falls into the discount category -- and it's also closing stores. The chain announced in March 2026 that it would shutter 36 locations. CEO Jason Potter said that the chain stretched itself too thin with a rapid expansion plan. 24 locations included in the closure are on the east coast, translating into less discount grocery options for many consumers in need of them.
Now, another grocery has announced new closures, some affecting locations that have been open for decades.

ASAP Rocky's appearance on The Jason Lee Show doesn't even come out until later this week, but the Harlem rapper's sitdown with the Hollywood Unlocked founder and Rihanna grocery store buddy is already making headlines.
Most recently, a clip from the interview (which airs in full on Wednesday, Aug. 5) has been making the rounds in which Rocky goes in-depth about his relationship with Rihanna. Pretty Flacko says that the "Umbrella" singer has always been there for him when times got hard, whether they were a couple or not.
"She really is a strong Black woman, and she held me down when I was at my lowest," Rocky says in the excerpt.
He goes on to remember multiple times that Rih was in his corner.

OXFORD — Ole Miss football might use the new college football eligibility rules in case of an emergency, but it won't be common practice.
A Colorado judge granted a fifth year of eligibility to college athletes in the 2022 high school class July 31 who didn't redshirt or turn pro . Because Ole Miss' Class of 2022 players who qualified have signed NFL deals, there's not an easy option for coach Pete Golding and the Rebels to plug-and-play.
The transfer portal further complicates things. It's not open, but players who qualify could try to sue separately and get a ruling that allows them to transfer. That happened to former Ole Miss basketball guard AJ Storr.
Golding said he's had preliminary discussions about bringing in now-eligible players, but he doesn't want to displace a player on his roster that was finalized when the ruling came out.
"I think the timing of this isn't perfect to create a lot of opportunities for certain people when you've already had a roster limit," Golding said Aug. 6 after the first fall practice. "There's no new additions, an umbrella, like they did in COVID."

Accidents can happen anywhere and at any time. Someone could slip on ice on your front walkway and break several bones. Or perhaps your tires lose traction on a rainy day, causing you to rear-end the vehicle in front of you, totaling the car, and injuring the other driver. Your home or auto insurance can help cover the costs of accidents like these if you're found liable. However, if the damages exceed your policy's liability limits, you could be responsible for paying the remaining costs out of pocket.
"That's where an umbrella policy would come into place," said Kim Bowser, vice president of national product and experience development at Grange Insurance. "Your auto or home insurance would typically cover the loss first. Umbrella kicks in as an extra layer on top of that coverage protection."
Umbrella insurance is a safety net protecting you from financial disaster. It pays to know what an umbrella policy is, how it works, and what it covers.

Lazio are on the cusp of terminating their collaboration with their main shirt sponsor, Polymarket, who failed to lift their ban.
Last April, the two parties announced an agreement until June 2028 that saw the American company's brand immediately displayed on the front of the Biancocelesti's jersey. However, this partnership has been plagued by an unexpected development, with the Italian authorities recently blacklisting Polymarket and shutting down its website for providing unsanctioned betting services.
The New York-based company lodged an appeal at Italy's administrative court (TAR), arguing that its activity as a prediction market doesn't fall under the betting umbrella, and making a clear distinction between the two.
According to Il Corriere dello Sport (via Calcio e Finanza), the TAR has rejected Polymarket's urgent appeal, explaining that the case requires a thorough examination. Therefore, the final ruling on the matter could arrive in the coming months.
In the meantime, the collaboration between Lazio and Polymarket appears to be dead in the water. The Roman newspaper understands that the parties have already agreed to terminate the contract, which will be formalised and officially announced in the coming hours.

The Green Bay Packers will open the 2026 training camp under sunny skies at 9 a.m. July 29 with the iconic bike rides from Lambeau Field to Ray Nitschke Field.
It is a tradition for Packers players and some coaches to ride kids' bikes from the stadium to the practice field. Kids can line up with their bikes near the Oneida Nation gate on the east side of the stadium and should arrive early. The Packers and American Family Insurance also will provide five Dream Bikes, basically bicycles with sidecars. Kids chosen for the Dream Bike experience will receive a bike helmet autographed by the player who rides with them.
The National Weather Service Green Bay forecast is for sunshine with a high of 84. Umbrellas are not allowed in the stands, so fans are advised to have hats, sunscreen and water.
Training camp practices are free and parking is available in the Lambeau Field parking lot. It's a three-minute walk from the parking lot to the practice field.
Twelve of this year's 13 free public practices will be at Ray Nitschke Field, on the east side of the Don Hutson Center. All public training camp practices start at 10:30 a.m., but the time is subject to change and weather conditions. The 13th practice, Family Night, is at Lambeau Field and requires tickets.

Ryan Garcia has entered the ranks of WWE, and contributing to one of the more weird editions of Raw in quite some time.
During a segment involving Joe Henry and Danhuasen dancing and pumping up the crowd, Garcia was in the ring with a guitar playing along. Eventually, Garcia turned in Hendry, blasting him with a guitar, while The Judgment Day's Dominick Mysterio and JD McDonagh delivered a beatdown on Hendry, Danhausen, and the Mini-Hausens.
Watch the ending of the segment in the video below.
Garcia enters another branch of the TKO umbrella after signing a deal to face Conor Benn in a September 12 matchup co-promoted by Zuffa Boxing. Garcia puts his WBC welterweight championship on the line in the grudge match.
The Raw segment helped set the table for this weekend's SummerSlam event, which includes a matchup between Mysterio and fan-favorite Danhausen. The match takes place on Sunday, part of the cap off card of the two-night event in Minneapolis.

Because not even the off-day can come without some ****** mer Mariners news, Adam Jude of the Seattle Times reports that the Mariners are parting ways with ****** istant hitting coach Bobby Magallenes.
Magallanes joined the staff prior to the 2025 season along with hitting coach Kevin Seitzer, both of whom had been unceremoniously fired by Atlanta after the 2024 season when the Braves finished the season 89-73. That mark was good for second place in the AL East, but broke the Braves' streak of six consecutive division ****** les, even though Atlanta still qualified for the playoffs, where they were swept by the Padres in the Wild Card series. It was a surprising move at the time, and looked on with consternation by many Atlanta fans as Seitzer and Magallanes went on to help the 2025 Mariners get deeper into the playoffs than any other Mariners team in history, making it all the way to the ALCS.
But baseball is often a sport of what-have-you-done-for-me-lately, and the Mariners, floundering after a 3-3 homestand against two of the worst teams in the NL, opted to make a move to try to spark some offense. While bold staffing changes is a common mid-season move among teams that are dramatically failing to live up to expectations, it's curious that Seitzer and Magallanes – long regarded as a package deal and sharing a similar hitting philosophy – weren't both let go. The ineptitude of the Mariners offense, last or near the bottom of the list in most offensive categories, is obvious, but like the 2024 Braves, Seattle's lineup has been wracked by injuries that have affected, at least temporarily, basically every member of the Opening Day roster except second baseman Cole Young [knocks on wood, pours salt circle, extends giant protective umbrella over Cole]. Furthermore, the bilingual Magallanes was a popular figure in the clubhouse, known for his "heck yeah, shoot yeah!" exclamation after wins or offensive outbursts; the deeply religious Magallanes was also a faith leader on the staff, something that resonated with hitters and pitchers alike.
While Seitzer preached an overall hitting mindset and approach, Magallanes's role on staff was to be responsible for more of the nuts-and-bolts mechanical adjustments, something Director of Hitting Edgar Martinez (who remains on staff) also focuses on, so the team might be looking for a new voice to fill that particular role and hopefully create some better on-field results.
To do that, they've promoted Ed Paparella, the Mariners' minor-league hitting coordinator, to a major-league role. The Mariners actually signed Paparella back in 2021 as a free agent out of South Alabama, and while he never played professionally, he quickly ascended the ranks of the minor leagues. At 31, Paparella is more than two decades younger than the 56-year-old Magallanes, and three decades younger than Martinez or Seitzer, perhaps providing more of a peer-adjacent perspective for the Mariners and creating some age diversity on the hi

Grizzlies point guard D’Angelo Russell is not believed to be a long-term piece in Memphis, with both sides expected to work together toward a resolution that would allow the 30-year-old to find a new home at some point this offseason — whether via a buyout agreement or a trade — sources tell Yahoo Sports.
Russell, who appeared in just 25 games last season in Dallas, arrived in Memphis earlier this month as part of an expansive six-team deal involving Milwaukee, Washington, Dallas, the LA Clippers and Detroit. The trade also sent center Isaiah Stewart, guard AJ Johnson, three future second-round picks, a conditional first-round pick and a second-round swap to the Grizzlies.
The veteran guard was ****** umed to be part of a ball-handling group in Dallas last season designed to ****** ist in the development of then-rookie Cooper Flagg, but started just three games — seemingly falling out of favor with former head coach Jason Kidd amid options like Ryan Nembhard and Brandon Williams. Russell, who was later traded to the Wizards at the February trade deadline and opted into the final year of his contract ($6 million) in June, would be potentially joining his fourth team in a span of two years.
Russell’s timeline — an experienced player with over 30 playoff games — simply doesn’t align with a rebuilding Grizzlies franchise seeking young, developmental talent centered around a core of Cedric Coward, Zach Edey and recent No. 3 pick Cameron Boozer. Coward and Boozer impressed in Vegas during summer league, with Coward averaging 19 points, 7 ****** ists and 4 rebounds and Boozer finishing the campaign earning first-team honors — and with the Grizzlies reaching the championship game. Memphis is also dealing with a roster crunch after an eventful summer, with 21 players currently on the roster (including Javon Small and Jahmai Mashack who are on two-way contracts).
The next question for Russell at this stage of the offseason will be finding a situation outside of Memphis where his skill set fits with an already established ecosystem. At a glance, his career stats paint the picture of a more-than-capable floor general — 17 points, 3.3 rebounds and 5.6 ****** ists on .427/.363/.793 splits — but his recent inconsistency requires a larger lens. When Russell has dominated the ball, he’s been shown to be a quality creator who threads the needle well between usage, playmaking and scoring prowess. The challenge for him, at least over the course of his recent stops with the Lakers, Nets and Mavericks has been dealing with efficiency under the umbrella of shot distribution and overall pecking order — along with remaining effective on the defensive end.

Netflix expanded its NFL footprint from two games to five for the upcoming season, and it appears that the streamer is looking to keep a consistent look throughout its schedule, which spans from Week 1 to Week 18.
Elle Duncan, the face of Netflix’s fledgling sports division, told Sports Media Watch that the streamer plans to use the same studio crew for all five of its NFL games this season. “We want every single one of our events to, yes, have a through-line and some consistency, and you’ll get that with the desk and the talent,” Duncan reportedly said on a yet-released episode of the Sports Media Watch Podcast.
In its two years of streaming a Christmas Day NFL doubleheader, Netflix has put together a ragtag bunch of ***** ysts and commentators spanning different networks and platforms, though other NFL broadcast partners have become increasingly reluctant to release talent to the streamer. ESPN and Fox reportedly did not allow their talent to appear on Netflix during the streamer’s doubleheader last year. Instead, on-air talent was primarily sourced from NFL Network and CBS. Now, with NFL Network operating under the ESPN umbrella, Netflix could face even greater challenges staffing its telecasts this season.
Last year, Netflix used two separate studio crews — one at each game — for its Christmas Day doubleheader. This season, it will stick to just one.
Netflix’s five-game slate will begin Week 1 in Melbourne, Australia for an International Series game between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers. Then, the streamer will air the first-ever Thanksgiving Eve game on Nov. 25. After that, Netflix will transition to its usual Christmas Day doubleheader, then close out the season with a to-be-determined Week 18 game.

After 44 years, longtime sports radio programmer Len Weiner is retiring. The journeyman programmer, who began his sports radio career as an original member of WFAN in 1986 after spending several years in news beforehand, has decided it’s time for his next chapter in life. For the last 12 years, Weiner has called Miami home, where he programmed both 790 The Ticket and 104.3 WQAM. At one point, he programmed both stations under the Entercom/Audacy umbrella.
For the last eight years, Weiner has guided WQAM from a heritage brand featuring legacy talent on the AM band to a 100,000-watt flamethrower on FM. Now in his mid-60s, he felt the time was right to step away.
“I’ve done this a long time, and have been lucky to have been a part of some good things. I just felt at this point in time, there’s other things that I want to do. It’s time,” said Weiner reflecting on the weight of the decision.
When navigating the path to ultimately deciding to step away, it wasn’t an overnight decision. Over the past couple of years, Weiner watched friends begin that path and make the same decision he has now made. As the days and months went on, thoughts of retirement slowly entered his mind, with every conversation leading him closer to finalizing how he envisioned retirement would come.
“I’ve been thinking about this for maybe a year and a half. Probably longer to be honest,” notes Weiner. “I got a lot of advice from friends and family. I like to plan, and I was trying to think about what I’m going to do. I’ve been planning what retirement could look like for about that amount of time.”

Tom Holland's rain-soaked Lip Sync Battle performance is back in the spotlight after a new report claimed the viral 2017 routine helped win over Zendaya long before they became one of Hollywood's most watched couples.
The performance aired during the promotional run for Spider-Man: Homecoming, when Holland and Zendaya were still publicly framed as co-stars. Holland opened with "Singin' in the Rain," then switched into Rihanna's "Umbrella" in fishnets, black shorts, a corset-style top and a wig while rain effects poured over the stage.
A new report claims the performance left Zendaya "smitten" and helped change how she saw him. The clip has stayed alive online for years partly because Zendaya's reaction from the side of the stage became almost as famous as Holland's choreography.
The renewed interest comes after Holland recently confirmed that he and Zendaya are married, turning an old viral TV moment into a fresh piece of their public relationship timeline.
Holland's Lip Sync Battle routine worked because he did not treat it like a throwaway celebrity bit. He committed to the costume change, choreography and stage rain, turning the Rihanna number into a full performance rather than a quick joke.

Ten professional sports unions—led by their umbrella organization, the AFL-CIO—have come out with major criticisms of the Protect College Sports Act, according to a statement shared with Front Office Sports Thursday.
The statement came in the middle of a Senate Commerce Committee markup to consider amendments to a fresh version of the bill. The Commerce Committee voted 19-9 to send it to the full Senate floor Thursday morning.
The bill, introduced by Sens. Ted Cruz (R., Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D., Wash) and co-sponsored by Sens. Eric Schmitt (R., Mo.) and Chris ****** s (D., Del.) would codify NIL and revenue-sharing rights, as well as health and safety standards and Olympic sports protections. But it would also establish limits on player compensation, transfers, and eligibility, give the NCAA and conferences antitrust protections to enforce these rules, and overrule any conflicting state laws.
College athlete advocacy groups have come out against the bill, saying it would implement restrictions on players that would normally be negotiated through collective bargaining.
And until this week, professional sports unions had refrained from taking a stance.

ICE detains in Miami sister of head of GAESA, the military firm that runs Cuba’s...

The Trump administration detained in Miami on Thursday the sister of the top Cuban official who heads the multi-billion-dollar military conglomerate that runs most of Cuba’s economy, Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced on Thursday.
ICE said in a press statement that Adys Lastres Morera was taken into custody after the State Department revoked her green card, saying she represented a threat to national security.
Lastres Morera is the sister of Gen. Ania Guillermina Lastres Morera, who runs the umbrella group known as GAESA that is part of the Cuban military. A 2025 Miami Herald investigation found that the Cuban military has an estimated $18 billion dollars in GAESA’s accounts as the country’s economic collapses and its population lives through a humanitarian crisis.
“Allowing Lastres Morera to remain in the country would send a signal that Cuban regime-affiliated networks could continue to access the U.S.’s financial, educational and social institutions — but that is not the case,” John Condon, acting executive ******* ociate director of Homeland Security Investigations, said in a statement.
In a separate statement, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Lastres Morera’s detention.
