Wisconsin democratic socialist state Rep. Francesca Hong, the Democratic primary frontrunner in the race for governor, sidestepped repeated questions from Politico reporter Jonathan Martin Tuesday at Marquette University in Milwaukee about whether she still wants to abolish police after a televised debate in which she pledged to preserve law enforcement funding amid scrutiny of her previous position.
"So, this system is not working," Hong said. "If we want to be serious, we better be putting these billions into things we know prevent crime."
Martin asked whether Hong still wanted to abolish police in the long term. Hong did not answer yes or no, instead calling for "systems of care" and redirecting criminal justice spending before a campaign aide ushered her away.
"I believe that we have to be serious about public safety, and I'm going to be a governor that is more serious than anyone else in making sure that we are building systems of care," Hong said.

MADRID, July 23 (Reuters) - Spanish former Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said on Thursday that €1.3 million ($1.5 million) of jewellery seized by ‌police as part of an investigation was a personal gift he ‌received years ago and was never intended for financial gain.
Zapatero, who was prime minister from 2004 to 2011 and remains an influential figure in the governing Socialist Party, is under investigation over alleged influence-peddling, accusations he denies. The case is one of a series of corruption scandals affecting the party and piling political pressure on Prime ‌Minister Pedro Sanchez's government.
In his ⁠first interview since being placed under investigation two months ago, Zapatero told Spanish public broadcaster TVE that the jewels found ⁠during a search of his office were "a personal courtesy gift" that had been stored for years with other family valuables.
The jewels were unrelated to his political activities and their origin and handling would be fully explained before a judge, he said. ‌He rejected suggestions they reflected any attempt at personal enrichment.
Investigating Judge Jose Luis Calama opened a separate probe into the jewellery, whose origin remains undocumented, according to investigators. An auction house provisionally valued them at about €1.3 million ($1.5 million), though Zapatero disputes that estimate.

New York City socialist mayor Zohran Mamdani was widely mocked by conservatives on social media Tuesday after announcing that one of his campaign platforms, arresting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, isn't a tool he has at his disposal.

I wonder — how many Americans will be bothered or offended by that greeting today? And how many more Independence Days will we celebrate as a country? We have made it to 250, but it's hard to imagine another hundred. It is much easier to imagine 20 or less.
A strong argument can be made that the left — via majority control of the media, academia, entertainment, science and medicine — is slowly but surely winning the messaging war. In fact, you might say they are crushing it.
Just look at the trend of stories online citing the fact that millions of Americans have little or no interest in celebrating the 250th anniversary of our nation. Or look at the rise of so-called "democratic socialist" candidates, who look upon the country created by our Founding Fathers as something that needs to be torn down and rebuilt from the inside. Don't forget about the alarming results of a recent poll showing that more than half of Americans under age 30 said believe "democracy isn't essential to the country's identity."
It is little wonder. Many of those young Americans grew up believing, after years of being taught in school, that our Founding Fathers were White supremacists and evil slave-owners from the privileged class, whose vision, courage and sacrifice must now be reexamined, rewritten and largely swept into the dustbin of history.

A deepening rift within the Democratic Party is coming into sharper focus as the establishment grows frustrated with the rising influence of the party's socialist wing.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., called out her Democratic colleagues for their "disrespectful" welcome of socialists into the "big tent" party.
"I think that there are a lot of very disrespectful comments that are coming from some parts of the Democratic Party that are dismissing the voters who elected these individuals," Jayapal told CNN.

Colorado Democratic Socialist candidate Melat Kiros recently argued how the 9/11 and 10/7 terror attacks were "inevitable" after U.S. and Israeli military actions in the Middle East.
In an interview with Colorado's Next 9News on June 22, Kiros was asked about comments she made while appearing on far-left Twitch streamer Hasan Piker's show where she labeled the Hamas terror attack against Israel as "an inevitable consequence of apartheid, of occupation, decades of occupation."
Kiros pushed back on the idea that Israel "had it coming" but insisted that, from the context of the video, it was important to understand the "conditions" that led to the terror attack.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) on Sunday said he would not want to change the Constitution's rules against non-native born Americans running for president, even as his political base continues to grow nationally.
The 34-year-old democratic socialist was born in Uganda. During a Sunday interview, ABC News's Jonathan Karl noted that Mamdani will soon meet the Constitution's age requirement to run for president. But Karl noted Mamdani would still not be eligible to run given his birthplace.

CNN's chief White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins pushed back on President Donald Trump's rhetoric about the rise of democratic socialism in the U.S., which Trump has incorrectly conflated with communism, following several victories from progressive House candidates in New York primaries.
During "The Source with Kaitlan Collins" on Friday, the CNN anchor aired remarks Trump made earlier that day at the annual Faith & Freedom Coalition Conference, where he described democratic socialists as "hardcore Godless communists" and "the most serious threat to our country since its existence."
Collins challenged the president's "border apocalyptic" comments that America could become a communist nation.

(NewsNation) — Democratic socialist candidates made major gains in elections across the country Tuesday night.
Three candidates gaining the most attention are Democratic socialists Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier, and progressive Democrat Brad Lander. All of them were backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in what was considered a major test of his political influence and the strength of the city's progressive movement overall.
"We are showing there is a new path for politics in our city and in our country," Mamdani said. "We are showing that last June, a year ago tomorrow, was not an anomaly. It was not the end. It was the beginning."
However, some in the Democratic Party believe success of the left could bring the party down.
