How hard do you have to ram a fish to make it explode? Ask an orca.
Barreling into large, heavy fish with enough force to blast them into instant chum is a previously unknown collaborative feeding strategy among orcas, scientifically called Orcinus orca, also known as killer whales.
But in 2024 and 2025, divers captured underwater video of two such events in the Mexican Pacific Ocean and in the Gulf of California. The footage suggests that the brutal body slamming may be in service of a meal — or perhaps a form of play for the orcas, researchers reported Thursday in the journal Frontiers in Ethology.
"I filmed the first event several years ago and couldn't believe what I was witnessing," said lead study author Kathryn Ayres, a research scientist for the marine conservation nonprofit Beneath the Waves and the first to capture orcas' high-speed ramming on video.
Ayres studies sharks but observing orcas that preyed on sharks in the Gulf of California sparked her interest in killer whale behavior. She filmed the encounter on July 29, 2024, while diving as an ocean safari tour guide with the group Latitude Encounters, near the coast of San José del Cabo in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur.

Soccernews is reporting that NEC Nijmegen are in negotiations with Cape Verde international Jamiro Monteiro. The 32-year-old left PEC Zwolle a few weeks ago after his contract expired and has been playing for the Sharks in their debut World Cup campaign. Monteiro and NEC are said to be close to an agreement to bring the midfielder to the club for the upcoming Eredivisie season.
Monteiro played in all four of Cape Verde’s World Cup games as the side made it out of the group stages and almost shocked Argentina in the Round of 32. Monteiro began his career in the Netherlands with Cambuur and Heracles before departing. He then went on to play for Metz in Ligue 1, Philadelphia Union and San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS before returning to Europe to play for Gaziantep. In 2024 the Cape Verde midfielder joined PEC Zwolle and over the past two seasons he has played 52 games for the club, scoring five goals and providing five ***** ists.
Monteiro can play as a central midfielder, out wide or behind the striker.

A surge in shark sightings and a swimmer's shark bite have beachgoers on the East Coast on high alert.
A small sand tiger shark is likely what bit a man who sustained non-life-threatening lacerations to his foot while swimming at Jones Beach State Park Field 6 on Long Island over the Fourth of July weekend, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation determined.
The beach was temporarily closed while state officials searched for more sharks, but they reopened it to restricted swimming after an hour.

Scrum-half Raffi Quirke has been called into the England squad for their Nations Championship match against Argentina next Saturday.
Quirke, who has signed for Newcastle Red Bulls after moving from Sale Sharks, is a replacement for the injured Alex Mitchell, who was forced off with a hamstring injury in Saturday's 73-8 win over Fiji in Liverpool
The 24-year-old also replaced Mitchell in this year's Six Nations squad when Mitchell was again ruled out through injury.
Quirke has two international caps, becoming England's youngest scrum-half in more than 90 years when he made his debut in 2021.
He also lined out for an England XV against a France XV in a Nations Championship warm-up in France last month.

Cal State Bakersfield announced another head coach hiring on Tuesday, but this was done simply by removing the interim tag off Ray Alvarado as women’s basketball coach.
Alvarado was hired as the CSUB **** ociate head coach in summer 2025 and was suddenly named interim head coach when the university put former head coach Ari Wideman on administrative leave in March. Alvarado coached the Roadrunners’ last two Big West Conference games of the 2025-26 season. Wideman officially resigned in April and Alvarado was handling the coaching duties, recruiting and summer basketball camp stuff until Tuesday’s announcement was made by CSUB Acting Director of Athletics Sarah Tuohy.
The move seemed natural given Alvarado being a Central Valley native, vast area coaching experience and his program-building skills. Following a national search, Alvarado is now the official head coach.
“Ray brings exactly what we were looking for at the helm of our women's basketball program," Tuohy said in a statement to announce Alvarado’s new status. "His extensive coaching career, including his experience at the junior college level, has given him a deep understanding of how to develop players and win — and his record speaks for itself. What excites me just as much is his connection to the Central Valley. That connection is core to what it means to be a Roadrunner, and Ray is going to recruit this backyard with a passion and credibility that will be transformative for our program.”
Before arriving in Bakersfield, Alvarado was the head coach at Hawaii Pacific University, leading the Sharks’ women’s basketball program after a very successful 13-year run as head coach for Visalia’s College of the Sequoias (COS). At COS, Alvarado guided the Giants to a CCCAA State Championship Final Four appearance in 2022 and multiple Elite Eight berths while earning five Central Valley Conference Coach of the Year honors.

An Olympian has said she is "incredibly disappointed" by the closure of a swimming club that shaped her sporting career.
Jazz Carlin, who won two silver medals at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, was born in Swindon, where she trained with Tigersharks.
"I really wouldn't be where I am today without Tigersharks," Carlin told Radio Wiltshire. "It gave me discipline and taught me resilience from a really early age."
The club, which was founded in 1975, will close on 31 August due to a "financial deficit". Directors cited rising pool costs and declining swimming numbers, and said all options to save the club had been exhausted.

However after an epic last-32 contest in Miami where Cape Verde pushed Argentina to the brink, the reigning world champions ****** ed a 3-2 win to move on, and the rank outsiders' journey was over.
"We lost the match, but we feel like we achieved a victory because we held our own against the world champions," fan Adilson Soaresz told AFP. "Cape Verde was magnificent".

They stop interior passes well and then counter strongly," Scaloni said. "It’s a good team. We’ve seen them, not just because we play them now but we scouted them as a possible opponent.
"They got through, and it doesn’t surprise us, sincerely. It's a good team. It’s not coincidence they’re here. You have to respect them, and that’s what we’ll do."
The message seems to be getting through, even though midfielder Rodrigo De Paul admitted he was expecting a South American showdown against neighbor Uruguay with a vibrant crowd in Miami.

Cape Verde's stunning progress to the World Cup knockout stages is "no accident" said Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni as he warned his side about the threat posed by the Blue Sharks in their last 32 tie.
Led by the brilliance of Lionel Messi's six goals in three games, the defending champions cruised through the group stage and appear to have a kind draw towards the semi-finals.
Australia or Egypt await in the last 16 if Argentina end the Cape Verde dream in Miami on Friday, while Switzerland or Colombia are likely quarter-final opponents for La Albiceleste.
However, Scaloni is not looking beyond Cape Verde, who drew all three of their group games, including against Spain, to progress ahead of Uruguay in Group H.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are seen as a major winner in free agency. Signing a proven goalie in Sergei Bobrovsky solidifies their goaltending problem. Bobrovsky had a down year last season, posting a .877 SV%, but in the previous two years, he had 30-plus win seasons. They can free up more cap ******* e with moves to add to their roster, too. Solid day one for Toronto.
The San Jose Sharks, who easily crushed the first-round draft, have now committed $17.5 million to two players on their defensive core. Jacob Trouba, who wasn’t great last season, was traded for Darnell Nurse, and they took on his entire salary. Yes, the Sharks have money to play with, but they are committing the money to the wrong players.
Trading away Darnell Nurse to San Jose was a massive win for the Oilers. Signing Ryan Shea is a huge boost to their team, along with trading for a young goaltender in Devon Levi. Frederick Anderson, who had a strong playoff performance this season, adding a Stanley Cup to his resume, joins the team to help Edmonton’s goaltender problem.

The first day of the NHL's free agency period started slowly, but certainly picked up speed as the afternoon went on.
Now that we're past July 1, NHL clubs can sign unrestricted free agents to contracts and the offseason can finally, truly begin. We saw a ton of movement on Wednesday, mostly in the form of major trades from teams like the San Jose Sharks and New York Rangers. There were also, thankfully, free agent signings to talk about as well, though not as many as you'd hope even with the thin market this summer.
Day 1 of NHL free agency often contains the most impactful moves, as now that the afternoon is winding down, teams will take their time to sort out their contracts as the summer chugs along. With the (likely) biggest deals of the day behind us, let's take a look at the major winners and losers of Day 1 of the NHL's 2026 free agency period.
The Canadiens continue to make incredibly smart moves. Re-signing Ivan Demidov to an eight-year, $73 million deal is tidy work. It's a high number now, but it's an incredibly team-friendly deal considering the kind of player he projects out to be. The Canadiens are certainly going to be a force for years to come and it'll be because of these savvy deals made with their young players.
For now, it seems as if Zach Werenski is staying a Blue Jacket. The defenseman could be moved via a trade this summer, but after all the smoke these last few days it felt like the writing was on the wall for Columbus. With reports suggesting that Werenski is "comfortable" returning to the Blue Jackets after talks with the front office, it certainly seems as if things have cooled off here to possibly Columbus' benefit.

The reports indicated Nurse, in his trade request, had picked out three East Coast teams as the only places he'd waive his no-trade clause for.
Now, though, that doesn't appear to be the case.
Apparently, he'd go play for the San Jose Sharks, too.

Ulster will face Cheetahs, Perpignan, Dragons, Bayonnais and Zebre in pool one of the 2026-27 European Challenge Cup.
Richie Murphy's side lost this year's final against Montpellier and are back in the second-tier European competition after finishing ninth in the United Rugby Championship table.
They have been drawn against French opposition again in Top 14 sides Bayonnais and Perpignan, who finished 12th and 13th in the division.
The province will also come up against South African side Cheetahs, who they beat in the group stage last year, as well as familiar URC opposition in Italian side Zebre and Welsh team Dragons.
In the Champions Cup, this year's beaten finalists Leinster will be up against French sides Clermont Auvergne and Pau as well as English teams Leicester Tigers and Sale Sharks and fellow URC outfit Glasgow Warriors in Pool One.

Ryan Lin is rooming with someone he knows pretty well during San Jose Sharks’ Development Camp.
Lin and fellow Sharks prospect Colton Roberts played together for the Vancouver Giants for a season, and the defensemen also work out together during the summers in British Columbia.
“We’re good friends, so it’s nice,” the 5-foot-11 right-handeder said. “I didn’t see him during the season because he’s in Colorado, so it’s nice to see him again.”
Now the older Roberts is showing Lin – who the San Jose Sharks drafted at No. 21 – around his first development camp. Roberts was a 2024 fifth-round selection.
Lin has already impressed San Jose Barracuda head coach John McCarthy.

Ivar Stenberg looked very comfortable in his first day at development camp.
“You can tell that he’s played against men before, sees the ice well, processes well,” San Jose Barracuda head coach John McCarthy said.
McCarthy thinks that the 2026 San Jose Sharks’ No. 2 pick will adjust well from the SHL’s bigger ice to the NHL’s smaller ice.
“Things happen faster, obviously, on the smaller ice, right? The pressure’s on top of you quicker, so everything has to be dialed up. But we played a small area game today, 2-on-2, and he did fine, I don’t foresee any issues,” McCarthy said. “I thought the [small area] game, he separated himself pretty well.”
The future San Jose Sharks star spoke on all the kids chanting his name on Tuesday, his camp goals, and the social media “controversy” about this true height.

The president of Cape Verde, José Maria Neves, predicts his country will defeat defending champions Argentina in the last 32 of the Fifa World Cup as the upstarts continue to "write their destiny".
"I think Cape Verde can beat Argentina 1-0," he said in an exclusive interview with the BBC.
"We are playing to win... when expectations are low regarding a team, and if that team has the urge to win, it is possible. A small nation like Cape Verde should make an effort to always do that - to permanently surprise people," he said.
His comments come ahead of Friday's clash between the Blue Sharks and Argentina's national side, known as La Albiceleste, in Miami at 22:00 GMT.
This the first ever World Cup for Cape Verde - a group of 10 islands in the Atlantic Ocean - who have now made history a second time by becoming the smallest nation to reach the knockout stage.

It sounds like all the Zach Werenski trade talk to the San Jose Sharks might be moot.
Elliotte Friedman doesn’t think that Werenski wants to come to San Jose, at least not yet.
“Wherever Werenski’s going to go now is most likely somewhere he thinks he can win,” Friedman opined on the 32 Thoughts Podcast. “I just don’t think you can win [a Stanley Cup] there now.
The San Jose Sharks, led by 20-year-old superstar Macklin Celebrini, are undoubtedly on the rise. But they’ve also missed the playoffs for seven-straight seasons and running.
So, the reigning Norris Trophy winner, 28, would have a point. It’s also very much worth noting that the American superstar has a No-Movement Clause this upcoming season, so he’s not going anywhere that he doesn’t want, at least not in 2026-27.

Manie Libbok will start in place of the injured Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu at fly-half for South Africa against England after the Springboks named their team more than five days before Saturday's kick-off.
Libbok sees off competition from Handre Pollard, who started the Boks' Rugby World Cup final wins in 2019 and 2023, to take the 10 shirt in a formidable side.
Libbok's inclusion is one of four changes to the South Africa side that beat Ireland 24-13 in November in their most recent full-strength run-out.
Grant Williams comes in at scrum-half, while Kurt-Lee Arendse, another dangerous runner, is back on the wing.

Days before free agency opens on July 1, the Vegas Golden Knights have made an important decision regarding the future of their goaltending.
On Sunday night, Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon announced that the team had agreed to a three-year contract extension with goaltender Carl Lindbom.
The deal will keep Lindbom in Vegas until 2029 and carry a $900,000 annual cap hit.
The 23-year-old Swedish netminder has continued to impress as a seventh-round selection of the Golden Knights in 2021, and this past season was the most important in his development yet. On Oct. 26, 2025, Lindbom made his NHL debut against the Tampa Bay Lightning. It would be the first of eight starts at the NHL level for Lindbom that season, and he would get his first win in the NHL against the San Jose Sharks on Nov. 29, 2025.
Back with Vegas’ AHL affiliate Henderson Silver Knights, Lindbom put up top-five numbers in the league with a 2.16 goals against average, a .926 save percentage and 24 victories.

The captain of Cape Verde, which made history by qualifying for the knockout rounds in its first-ever World Cup, is under investigation for rape in New Zealand, according to Brazil's Globo.
Ryan Mendes, who played all three games for the Blue Sharks, is accused of ***** ually ***** aulting a woman who worked for the team as a translator during the FIFA Series, played in New Zealand in March. A decision on whether Mendes will be charged will not be made until the investigation, including forensic ***** ysis, is complete.
In a statement, FIFA said it takes "any allegation of misconduct" seriously and was in contact with New Zealand authorities.
"Please understand we cannot comment further at this stage," the statement said.
The Cape Verde team did not respond to a request for comment from USA TODAY.

Jake Gustafson is coming home.
The San Jose Sharks drafted the Jr. Shark, the son of the SAP Center vice president Jon Gustafson, with the No. 174 pick.
“It’s a dream come true to play for my hometown’s team,” he said. “I grew up cheering for them, rooting for them. It’s just a dream come true.”
The 6-foot-4 center played for the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL this past season, putting up 13 goals and 25 points in 68 games played.
Following in his father’s footsteps, in the 2027-28 season he will play for Colorado College in the NCAA.

The San Jose Sharks drafted Brady Knowling at No. 127 overall in the fourth round of the NHL Draft on Saturday.
The 6-foot-5 left-handed goaltender wants to be known for his skating ability, not just his size.
“I want my name to be a part of a sentence where it’s like, ‘Wow, his skating is really good for his size,'” Knowling said. “Because a lot of these bigger goalies are stereotypically not as good as skaters as everyone else, and it’s like, yeah, I’m 6-foot-5 but I want to be able to be an unbelievable skater.”

Knowling spent his last two seasons with the USNTDP, where he played 52 games across this year. He’ll head to the Saginaw Spirit for a year, before joining Boston University.

The 2026 NHL Entry Draft wrapped up on Saturday in Buffalo as the league officially welcomed its next generation of stars. The two-day event kicked off with a prime-time first round on Friday night at KeyBank Center — making Buffalo the first city to host the draft in its new decentralized format — before concluding with Rounds 2 through 7 on Saturday afternoon.

Leading the class was exceptional-status forward Gavin McKenna, who was selected No. 1 overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs, followed by Anton Stenberg to the San Jose Sharks at No. 2 and Caleb Malhotra to the Vancouver Canucks at No. 3.
On Saturday afternoon, Rounds 2 through 7 of the draft came and went in Buffalo, with 192 players selected through the afternoon. Whether international players, ones in the American leagues, or amateurs prepping for the collegiate level, teams picked up valuable pieces to add to their prospect pools.
One of the most fascinating storylines of the weekend came from the Pittsburgh Penguins, who kept an incredible family dream alive by drafting twin brothers Liam and Markus Ruck. GM Kyle Dubas selected Liam, a goal-scoring winger, at No. 22 overall on Friday, before calling his twin brother and elite playmaker, Markus, at No. 39 on Saturday. The dynamic duo finished top-two in WHL scoring with Medicine Hat last season and will now head to the pros together.
But the draft wasn’t just about picks. There were some major trades.

The Boston Bruins traded the No. 23 overall pick and a 2028 first-round pick (top-10 protected) to acquire winger JJ Peterka from the Utah Mammoth. Around the NHL, the New York Rangers acquired Pavel Dorofeyev, the St. Louis Blues traded for Mason McTavish, and the Carolina Hurricanes picked up the rights to John Carlson.

This year we have a top-64 and a whole lot of honorable mentions that I am excited to show you all.
I have two reference points next to each prospect: EliteProspects Ranking (EP) and the EP consolidated ranking from multiple sources (Cons.) The consensus ranking is from June 19th, so some may be off by a few **** es as they update that frequently. Each player’s top line shows where they are ranked, with the gap to my own rank in parentheses. A plus means I’m higher on the player than that source; a minus means I’m lower.
Some players carry a Perfect Fit flag. These are the players I’m more confident have a place in an NHL lineup, even if that ceiling isn’t necessarily very high. They carry certain NHL qualities in their pace, processing, or compete that I think they fit different NHL archetypes at the next level despite size or other limitations.
