NEW DELHI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is taking a long-term view of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's astonishing rise, with secretary Devajit Saikia revealing that the board is closely monitoring the 15-year-old and wants to ensure his early success translates into a long and distinguished international career.
Sooryavanshi's rapid emergence was among the matters discussed at Thursday's high-level BCCI review meeting in Mumbai, which was attended by Saikia, India Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir, Centre of Excellence (CoE) head VVS Laxman and other senior officials.
The teenager has already gone from being an IPL sensation to becoming India's youngest men's international debutant, and the BCCI is now determined to ensure that his development is handled carefully rather than allowing the weight of expectation to derail his progress.
"We want Vaibhav Sooryavanshi or any player of his stature to continue and serve like Sachin Tendulkar did for the country or other players who in the past became legends," Saikia said.
"So we look at Vaibhav in a very serious manner. He's monitored from every angle and every step he is taking forward in his international career. The BCCI is taking a very close look at his future."
Saikia made it clear that the BCCI's objective is not simply to maximise Sooryavanshi's immediate impact but to build a career that can last for years.
"You see, the BCCI can be proud that we are promoting a player of the age of 15 years who is already making his mark in the international scenario and we are very cautious that every right step he should take forward so that it should not be a one series or one year wonder," he said.
The comparison with Tendulkar was particularly significant. Like Sooryavanshi, Tendulkar was thrust into the international spotlight as a teenager before going on to enjoy one of the longest and most successful careers in the history of the game.
The BCCI secretary stressed that Sooryavanshi's progress would be closely tracked at every stage.
"We want Vaibhav's relevance, or any player of his stature, to continue and serve as Sachin Tendulkar did for the country or other players who in the past became legends," Saikia said.
The teenager's rapid rise has given the board plenty of reason for optimism. He was India's youngest-ever men's international debutant after earning his maiden call-up following a sensational IPL 2026 campaign with Rajasthan Royals.
Sooryavanshi scored 776 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 237.30, including a century and five fifties, while his 72 sixes set an IPL record for a single season. He subsequently won several awards, including the Orange Cap, Most Valuable Player, Emerging Player, Super Striker and Super Sixes honours.
He also made an immediate impact for India against Zimbabwe, scoring 151 runs in three matches as India completed a 3-0 sweep and claimed his maiden Player of th

OpenAI's head of data centers, Chris Malone, has left the company, adding to a string of senior executive departures at the artificial intelligence lab this year.
TechCrunch first reported his departure. Malone, who brought experience from data center roles at Meta and Google, came aboard in March 2025, and his exit arrives amid OpenAI's sweeping infrastructure expansion — one that envisions committing around $600 billion to compute through 2030, per CNBC.
OpenAI said in a statement that the company had "recently reorganized" its "infrastructure organization to support the scale and pace of our work," adding that it has "a strong, deeply experienced data center team in place, with clear leadership and the technical expertise to execute our plans." Under the new structure, Malone's reporting line shifted away from OpenAI President Greg Brockman and moved to OpenAI Vice President Sachin Katti, who ***** umed oversight of the group, according to TechCrunch. Responsibility for data center strategy is now distributed across a handful of leaders: Uday Ruddarraju heads the data center team, Brent Mayo manages the build and delivery program, and Spas Lazarov oversees data center engineering.
Malone's exit is one piece of a broader pattern of attrition at the top of the company. According to TechCrunch, Business Insider put the total count of senior departures in 2026 at 13, with a notable cluster occurring in recent weeks.
Earlier this month, Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser announced she was leaving after nine months on the job and will be replaced by Dali Rajic, who most recently served as president and chief operating officer of cybersecurity company Wiz. Her departure came just days after Brad Lightcap, who spent eight years at OpenAI, including a four-year run as chief operating officer, said he was leaving to start a new venture. Before those exits, product and business chief Fidji Simo stepped down last month to manage a chronic illness, and Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch left in April for health reasons.

AB de Villiers believes Virat Kohli took India's batting success in overseas Test cricket to another level, while crediting Sachin Tendulkar for first showing that Indian batters could thrive in conditions traditionally considered difficult for players from the subcontinent.
The former South Africa batter and Kohli's ex-Royal Challengers Bengaluru teammate was speaking after India's 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in Galle on Wednesday.
De Villiers acknowledged Tendulkar's pioneering role but argued that Kohli went a step further in establishing himself as an outstanding overseas Test batter.
"I think of someone like Sachin Tendulkar way back, who started that trend for India. Yet, he wasn't as strong as someone like Virat Kohli, who was even better. But Sachin was the first guy to show that as a subcontinent batter, you can do well in bouncy and seaming conditions. Virat took that forward and raised the bar," said de Villiers on his YouTube channel.
Tendulkar remains the highest run-scorer in Test cricket, having accumulated 15,921 runs in 200 matches before retiring in 2013. Kohli, who retired from Test cricket in May 2025, ended his career with 9,230 runs in 123 Tests, placing him 19th on the all-time list.
The statistics, however, suggest Tendulkar still holds the edge when it comes to performances away from home. Of his 15,921 Test runs, 8,705 came outside India, accounting for around 55% of his total. He is also the leading run-scorer among batters in overseas Test cricket.
Kohli scored 4,774 runs in 66 Tests outside India.
The comparison remains in Tendulkar's favour even when the focus is restricted to SENA countries: South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia. Tendulkar amassed 5,387 runs in 63 Tests in those countries at an average of 51.30, including 17 centuries and 23 fifties.
Kohli, meanwhile, scored 3,661 runs in 46 Tests in SENA conditions at an average of 42.08, with 12 centuries and 14 fifties.
De Villiers' ******* sment therefore appears to focus less on the raw numbers and more on Kohli's wider influence on Indian Test cricket. During Kohli's tenure, India established itself as a formidable side overseas, setting higher expectations for performances outside home conditions.
According to de Villiers, that influence has carried into the current generation, with batters such as KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal following the path laid by Tendulkar and Kohli.
"Because of that, there are quite a few players now like [KL] Rahul and [Devdutt] Padikkal, who have started to up that trend and follow in the footsteps of a Virat and a Sachin," he added.
De Villiers did, however, identify overseas batting as an area where Rahul needs to improve. Despite praising the Karnataka batter's technique and importance to the Indian side, he pointed out that Rahul averages only 34 away from home.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Cricket League (KCL) enters its third season on Thursday with a question that goes beyond who will lift the trophy: Who steps up to own Kerala's T20 stage in the absence of Sanju Samson?
Sanju, the league's biggest star and a key figure in Kochi Blue Tigers' ******* le-winning campaign last season, has opted out citing "personal reasons". It leaves a void, but also opens the door for a new generation to seize the spotlight. Kochi, led by Sanju's brother Saly Samson, will have to prove they can defend their crown without their biggest match-winner.
"Sanju will be missed. His experience was invaluable last season during our ******* le-winning run. But we have a core team of 10 players who performed for us, with seniors like Basil Thampi," Saly said.
The defending champions, who face Kollam Sailors on Thursday at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, however, are not looking beyond the immediate task. "There's added pressure on us because of the defending champions tag, but we're confident. We have prepared well for this tournament," he said.
The search for the next breakout star could be the defining subplot of KCL 3. Young players will have an opportunity to turn the league into a springboard to Kerala's senior side, the IPL and beyond. Saly reckoned the tournament's unpredictable nature could produce a surprise package.
"I believe that KCL has a knack for throwing up surprises. How you perform on the given day is what makes it count. Some young, relatively unknown player might come good and score a ton or pick up a five-for," he added.
The auction has added another layer of intrigue. Alleppey Ripples' ₹11.8-lakh purchase of Sibin Gireesh made him the league's most expensive player, while Krishna Devan and Sachin Baby also commanded big bids. Baby's move to Alleppey, where he will captain the side, adds another interesting storyline as the former Kerala skipper begins a new chapter.
The KCA has ******* embled a 15-member umpiring panel, including former Kerala captain and ICC elite panel umpire K N Ananthapadmanabhan and BCCI Level 2 umpire Tony Emmatty. Two BCCI-panel umpires will officiate in every game.
Adding another layer of technology is the Hawk-Eye, which will be used to ******* ist reviews and improve the accuracy of decision-making. With four umpires ******* igned to every game and Hawk-Eye enhancing the review process, KCL is aiming for greater professionalism.
As six teams converge on Greenfield, the moot question remains: Without Sanju, who becomes the new face of Kerala's T20 cricket?

When Yashasvi Jaiswal walked out to bat in Galle for the first Test against Sri Lanka, he was playing the 30th Test of his career. The milestone came with an unusual record - Jaiswal has played each of his first 30 Tests at a different venue.
The India opener has never played a Test at the same ground twice.
His journey began in Roseau in July 2023 and, after stops across the Caribbean, South Africa, India, England and Australia, he reached his 30th Test in Galle on Saturday.
Jaiswal has made a strong start to his Test career. In 30 matches, he has scored 2,567 runs in 55 innings, including seven centuries and 13 fifties. His highest score is an unbeaten 214, while his batting average stands at 48.43.
Jaiswal's unique record also puts him in the company of two former India batters.
Sanjay Manjrekar played his first 33 Tests at 33 different venues, while Sachin Tendulkar appeared at 32 different venues in his first 32 Tests.
However, the landmark Test ended on a disappointing note for Jaiswal as he was run out for 32.
Jaiswal had looked comfortable during his 37-ball stay and was helping India make a steady start in Galle. But an unfortunate mix-up with KL Rahul brought his innings to an early end.
Jaiswal lost his balance after a collision with the bowler, and confusion followed between the two batters. Both Jaiswal and Rahul ended up at the non-striker's end, leaving Jaiswal stranded and forcing him to walk back.

CHENNAI: If Javagal Srinath had been the match referee when Sourav Ganguly famously kept Steve Waugh waiting for the toss at Eden Gardens in 2001 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the former India captain might well have faced a suspension.
"I would have banned Sourav for a few games!" Srinath said at EEMAGINE event by recalling the incident, which has been regarded as an act of gamesmanship that disturbed Waugh and the Australian team during the course of the famous series that India won 2-1. Ganguly later said that he couldn't find his blazer which led to the delay, but that's highly debatable.
Srinath, however, praised Ganguly's leadership, particularly his ability to nurture youngsters such as Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag. He felt Indian cricket underwent a major transformation after the match-fixing scandal of the late 1990s, with players developing a collective resolve to restore the game's image.
"There was a bit of a resoluteness in each and every player to really put that image back and then prove the world that cricket is superior, cricket is clean," Srinath said. He added that leadership came from the top four or five players being on the same page, which helped India not only start winning consistently at home but also turn the corner overseas.
Srinath recalled that between 1991 and 1997-98, India struggled to win abroad, but things began changing from 1999 onwards.
Looking back at the 2003 World Cup final against Australia, Srinath revealed that he had wanted India to bat first after a discussion within the team. "I was one of the guys who said we should always bat first and then put them under pressure," he said. But Ganguly had a different view. And once the decision was made, Srinath said the team had to move on, but Australia were simply too strong.
He recalled recommending Zaheer to selector Chandu Borde after watching the left-arm pacer take six wickets against Air India while representing the MRF Pace Foundation. When Borde jokingly asked what would happen to Srinath if Zaheer was picked, his response was simple: "If he's good, he replaces me."
Srinath also revealed that Rahul Dravid was "not the best roommate," joking about the former India batter's habit of leaving things scattered, while describing Venkatesh Prasad as extremely "spick and span".
On Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Srinath cautioned against comparisons with Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, stressing that different eras bring different challenges.
"When you judge a player it's just not the white ball, it is the red ball cricket as well. Sooryavanshi is a wonderful talent, I think he's still too young. I hope he develops the maturity like Sachin and has that strong head on his shoulders like Virat."
Srinath also called for a better balance between bat and ball, pointing to shorter boundaries, bigger bats and less ***** ounced seams. "Something needs to be done to bring some balance into this game," he said.

Former India captain Ajinkya Rahane has picked Sachin Tendulkar as the greatest Indian cricketer of all time, shortly after bringing the curtain down on his playing career.
Rahane, who recently announced his retirement from all forms of cricket during an episode of Stick to Cricket, was asked to name India's greatest-ever cricketer. While acknowledging that the choice was far from straightforward, the former batter eventually settled on Tendulkar.
"I think it's very hard to take one name but… probably Sachin Tendulkar. I think all the eras," Rahane said.
Tendulkar enjoyed a remarkable international career that stretched across 24 years, representing India from November 15, 1989, to November 16, 2013. During that period, he featured in 664 international matches, including 200 Tests, 463 ODIs and one T20I.
The batting icon scored 15,921 runs in Tests, 18,426 in ODIs and 10 in T20Is, finishing as the highest run-scorer in the history of both Test and ODI cricket. He also remains the only player to have appeared in 200 Test matches and holds the record for the most ODI appearances.
Tendulkar was a central figure in India's triumphant 2011 ICC Men's ODI World Cup campaign, adding the coveted trophy to an already glittering career.
As captain, he led India in 25 Tests, registering four wins, nine defeats and 12 draws. In ODIs, Tendulkar captained the side in 73 matches, winning 23, losing 43, with one tie and six no-results.
Rahane made his international debut in a T20I against England at Manchester on August 31, 2011, and went on to represent India across all three formats between 2011 and 2023.
The Mumbai batter had the opportunity to share the dressing room with Tendulkar on multiple occasions. He played one Test alongside the legendary batter for India and had earlier been his teammate at Mumbai Indians during the 2009 IPL season, apart from representing Mumbai together in domestic cricket.
Across a career spanning more than 12 years, Rahane played most of his international cricket under MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. He was a key member of India's historic 2018-19 Test series-winning squad in Australia before captaining the team to another memorable series victory there in 2020-21.
Rahane also joined an exclusive list of Indian cricketers to captain the national side in all three formats. He finished his career with Test centuries in Australia, England and New Zealand, while representing six IPL franchises: Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Rising Pune Supergiants, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings.

Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar paid a heartfelt tribute to his late mentor, Ramakant Achrekar, on the occasion of Guru Purnima, expressing gratitude for the coach who laid the foundation of his legendary career. The batting great shared pictures from his visit to Achrekar's memorial at Mumbai's Shivaji Park and reflected on the invaluable lessons his coach imparted, both on and off the field.
In an emotional message posted on social media, Tendulkar wrote:
"Standing here today, I realised something. No matter how many years pass, I'll always feel like I have one more 'thank you' left to say. Thank you for believing in me, guiding me, and helping me become the person I am. Happy Guru Purnima, Achrekar Sir."
Achrekar was instrumental in nurturing Tendulkar's talent during his formative years at the famous Shivaji Park. Known for his strict discipline and emphasis on hard work, the veteran coach played a crucial role in developing Tendulkar's technique, temperament, and dedication, qualities that later defined one of the greatest careers in cricket history. Over the years, Tendulkar has repeatedly acknowledged Achrekar's influence, often crediting him for preparing him to handle the pressures of international cricket from a young age.
A memorial honouring Ramakant Achrekar was unveiled at Shivaji Park in 2024, celebrating his immense contribution to Indian cricket. Tendulkar attended the unveiling ceremony, paying tribute to the man widely regarded as one of the country's most influential cricket coaches.

Shreyas Iyer finally ended his wait for a victory as India's T20I captain after leading the side to a convincing seven-wicket win over Zimbabwe in the opening match of the three-game series in Harare on Thursday.
The result marked Shreyas' first win since taking over the captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav earlier this year. India had endured a difficult run under his leadership, beginning with a shock 2-0 series defeat to Ireland before suffering a 4-0 drubbing against England in a five-match T20I series.
Former India opener Sadagopan Ramesh said the celebrations following the Zimbabwe win were understandable given the team's recent struggles, insisting the victory would come as a major relief for the skipper.
"Many are saying India shouldn't be so excited for just a win over Zimbabwe. Yet, when you are starving for a victory for so long in T20Is, even leftover food will taste like a wedding meal. Shreyas Iyer will be relieved, considering India's fall under his captaincy. He would have reached a point where a win over anyone would have been enough for him," Ramesh said in a video uploaded on Instagram.
Ramesh also reserved praise for VVS Laxman, who is serving as India's interim head coach for the Zimbabwe tour. He credited the former India batter for consistently delivering positive results whenever he takes charge of the national side.
"VVS Laxman also deserves high praise. India perform well every time he's the head coach. Under him, India seem to always whitewash the opponents, even at a time the other teams are constantly whitewashing India otherwise. It got to the point where India just needed a win of any kind and hence their elation after beating even Zimbabwe," he added.
India's victory was further highlighted by a historic knock from teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old blazed his way to a maiden international half-century in just 18 ****** , becoming the youngest player to score a fifty in men's international cricket.
Sooryavanshi reached the milestone at the age of 15 years and 118 days, eclipsing the previous record held by Sachin Tendulkar. The batting great was 16 years and 213 days old when he registered his maiden international fifty against Pakistan in a Test at Faisalabad in 1989.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi believes his record-breaking maiden international half-century has given him the confidence he needs after a difficult start to life in international cricket.
The 15-year-old announced his arrival in style by smashing an 18-ball fifty against Zimbabwe in the opening T20I in Harare on Thursday, becoming the youngest player to score a half-century in men's international cricket.
The knock marked a dramatic turnaround for the teenage opener, who had endured a disappointing debut series against England. Sooryavanshi managed just 42 runs across his first three T20I innings, scoring 14 off 10 **** , 13 off five deliveries and 15 off 10 **** .
After helping India secure a seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe and a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, Sooryavanshi said the innings would play a key role in boosting his self-belief at the start of his international journey.
"When you are in the starting phase of your career, and you get such an innings at the start, you get confidence for the next matches. It felt like I was in my zone and I backed my own strength," Sooryavanshi said in a video posted by the BCCI.
At 15 years and 118 days, Sooryavanshi eclipsed a long-standing record held by Sachin Tendulkar. The Indian batting legend was 16 years and 213 days old when he scored his maiden international fifty against Pakistan in the Faisalabad Test in 1989.
Harare has become a particularly memorable venue for the youngster. Earlier this year, he lit up the same ground with a breathtaking 175 off 80 **** against England in the final of the 2026 Under-19 World Cup. Months later, he returned to the venue to produce another innings that underlined his immense potential.
Despite enjoying success in Harare, Sooryavanshi insisted he is not taking any venue or opportunity for granted and remains focused on making meaningful contributions wherever he plays.
"There are some grounds where you like to make runs. I am not taking it for granted. I am just trying to play wherever I can, give my best, contribute to the team and do well," he said.
The teenager also acknowledged the role played by those who have supported him throughout his rise, dedicating the milestone to his family and coaches.
"I will dedicate myself to my family, to my coaches, to everyone who supported me in my journey," he concluded.
Sooryavanshi's explosive knock laid the foundation for India's comfortable chase of Zimbabwe's 125 for seven, with the visitors sealing victory by seven wickets and taking an early advantage in the three-match T20I series.

OpenAI has raised its projected spending on computing infrastructure to around $750 billion through 2030, up from roughly $600 billion earlier this year, according to The Wall Street Journal. New deals with cloud-computing providers are driving the higher figure, as OpenAI continues its push to obtain the vast computing resources its AI models require.
On Wednesday, OpenAI said it would invest $20 billion to begin construction on a data center called Project Camellia in Effingham County, Georgia. Unlike its other facilities, where the company leases chip capacity from providers such as Oracle and Amazon Web Services, the Savannah Gateway Industrial Hub site marks OpenAI's first venture as the principal designer and builder of its own data center.
Sachin Katti, OpenAI's vice president of compute strategy, said the company has contracted with utility Georgia Power to receive 3.2 gigawatts of power between 2028 and 2032. OpenAI has already acquired the land for the project and is in the process of selecting a partner to build and operate the site, Katti said.
The company has also hired Brent Mayo, a key figure in building Elon Musk's xAI data center infrastructure, according to the Journal. After departing xAI earlier this year, Mayo had been instrumental in standing up that company's Colossus supercomputer campus in Memphis, where he managed the rapid procurement and commissioning of large-scale AI chip clusters. In the head of data-center build and delivery role, he will be responsible for keeping cloud partners on track with their construction timelines, while also contributing to the new Georgia facility. Mayo reports to Uday Ruddarraju, who was promoted this month to become OpenAI's chief technology officer of computing capacity.
The $750 billion projection represents the latest escalation in a spending trajectory that has drawn scrutiny inside the company. Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar has privately raised concerns that OpenAI may not be able to honor future computing contracts if revenue growth does not keep pace with commitments. That came after Chief Executive Sam Altman stated publicly that OpenAI intended to spend $1.4 trillion on computing capacity, a figure that unsettled observers; Friar subsequently stepped in to correct the record, telling investors the actual projected outlay through 2030 was approximately $600 billion.

NEW DELHI: India's teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi once again captured the spotlight on Thursday — not just for rewriting cricket history, but also for the heartfelt celebration that followed his record-breaking half-century.
The 15-year-old produced a breathtaking innings against Zimbabwe in the first T20I at Harare, smashing a 50 off just 18 ******* to become the youngest player ever to score a fifty in men's international cricket.
Moments after reaching the milestone, Sooryavanshi broke into his now-famous 'A' celebration, forming the letter with his fingers before acknowledging the dressing room. The emotional gesture, which first went viral during IPL 2026, has now become synonymous with the young opener.
The left-hander's explosive knock featured four boundaries and four sixes, giving India a flying start in their chase of 126 after Zimbabwe were restricted to 125/7.
WATCH:
While the celebration sparked widespread curiosity during the IPL, Sooryavanshi had initially played down its significance, insisting he simply enjoyed trying different celebrations after reaching milestones.
"I don't know. I just do something new every match. I don't really plan it. There's no meaning behind it," he had said after one of his IPL knocks.
However, the real meaning behind the gesture later emerged in a behind-the-scenes Rajasthan Royals video.
Speaking to team manager Romi Bhinder, the youngster finally revealed that the 'A' is a tribute to his mother, Aarti.
"The celebration is for my mother. Her name starts with the letter 'A'," Sooryavanshi had revealed.
Since then, the celebration has become his trademark, and Thursday's emotional tribute carried even greater significance after he etched his name into the record books.
At 15 years and 118 days, Sooryavanshi eclipsed Nepal's Kushal Malla, who previously held the record after scoring his maiden international fifty at 15 years and 340 days.
The Indian opener also surpassed some of cricket's biggest names on the all-time list. Sachin Tendulkar scored his maiden international fifty at 16 years and 213 days in a Test against Pakistan in 1989, while Shahid Afridi reached the milestone at 16 years and 214 days during an ODI against Sri Lanka in 1996.
The innings also made Sooryavanshi the youngest player ever to register a 50-plus score in men's T20Is, comfortably bettering Gibraltar's Louis Bruce, who had held the previous T20I age record.
Already one of the biggest stories of IPL 2026, Sooryavanshi has now carried that form onto the international stage.

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — The 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi hit his first international half-century for India as Zimbabwe was comfortably beaten by seven wickets in a Twenty20 on Thursday.
Sooryavanshi scored 50 off 18 ***** . He was out next ball at 68-2, top-edging an attempted cut at Richard Ngarava.
But the teenager had turned the chase of 126 into a doddle and Shreyas Iyer was in the middle at 126-3 to celebrate his first win as captain in eight T20s. Zimbabwe made 125-7 after Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav took two wickets each.
Sooryavanshi replaced Sachin Tendulkar this month as the youngest player to represent India but his output in the T20 series in England was modest: 14, 13, 15 at a strike rate of 168. He was replaced for the last match and India lost the series 4-0.
The selectors hoped Sooryavanshi would thrive in a low-key series at the same cricket ground where he blasted 175 off 80 ***** against England in February in the final of the Under-19 World Cup.

India Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill added another memorable moment to his England tour after receiving an invitation to watch the ongoing Wimbledon 2026 Championships from the iconic Royal Box.
With the invitation, Gill became only the fourth Indian cricket captain to be hosted in the prestigious enclosure, joining the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Reserved for distinguished guests from sport, entertainment, politics and public life, the Royal Box is among the most exclusive seating areas at the All England Club and is regarded as one of Wimbledon's highest honours for visiting personalities.
Gill's visit has also generated significant buzz on social media. A video showing the India captain in conversation with tennis great Roger Federer has gone viral, with fans delighted to see two sporting icons sharing a moment at the Championships.
The 26-year-old was also spotted watching the action alongside Sachin Tendulkar and his wife Anjali Tendulkar, adding another high-profile moment to his Wimbledon appearance.
Gill is currently in England with the Indian team ahead of the upcoming three-match ODI series against England. Despite a busy international schedule, he has managed to attend two of Britain's biggest sporting events during the tour.
Earlier this week, Gill experienced his first Formula 1 race after attending the British Grand Prix at Silverstone as a VIP guest.
The Indian skipper enjoyed behind-the-scenes access throughout the race weekend, visiting the paddock, interacting with members of the Formula 1 fraternity and getting a close look at areas typically reserved for teams, drivers and special invitees.
On the field, Gill has been in excellent touch during the bilateral series. He remained unbeaten on 84 in the opening match before producing a commanding 154 in the second game. In the third and final fixture, the opener moved himself down the batting order as India sealed a comfortable nine-wicket victory.
India will now take on England in the fifth and final T20I at Southampton on Saturday before shifting focus to the three-match ODI series.

NEW DELHI: Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar led tributes to Ben Stokes after the England great announced his retirement from international cricket, praising his fearless approach, match-winning temperament and inspirational leadership in an emotional social media post.
Stokes confirmed that the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge would be the final international appearance of his illustrious 15-year career, bringing the curtain down on one of the most influential careers in modern cricket.
Reacting to the announcement, Tendulkar hailed Stokes for the energy and intensity he brought to every contest while acknowledging the immense impact he had as both an all-rounder and captain.
"benstokes38, I've always admired the way you brought energy into the game. Your positivity, your fearless intent, and the way you shaped moments under pressure stood out every time you walked in," Tendulkar wrote on X.
The Indian legend went on to describe Stokes as one of England's finest all-rounders.
"As an all-rounder, you've been one of England's finest, and as a captain, your bold tactics and instinctive reading of the game added a new edge to your side."
Tendulkar concluded with a heartfelt farewell while adding a touch of humour.
"Wishing you the very best for what comes next. Though knowing you, staying away from the middle might be the hardest part. Good luck for your next innings!"
Stokes' farewell, however, ended in disappointment as Tom Latham's New Zealand completed a 160-run victory at Trent Bridge to seal the three-match series 2-1. It was the first home Test series defeat of Stokes' career as both player and captain.
Despite the result, the 35-year-old insisted he was completely at peace with his decision.
"I'm done, mate, and I'm very happy," Stokes told the BBC after the match.
The England star admitted the decision had taken months of thought and discussions with those closest to him.
"I am incredibly content with everything right now. It's a decision that you don't take lightly. It has taken a lot of time."
Stokes also acknowledged that a turbulent few weeks, including disciplinary controversy following England's victory at Lord's, "maybe" influenced the timing of his retirement, but stressed that years of physical and mental demands had ultimately taken their toll.

"Over the last 6-12 months I think everything that I've done over a long period of time has taken its toll," he said.
Having captained England through the transformative "Bazball" era and played starring roles in the country's 2019 ODI World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup triumphs, Stokes leaves the international stage as one of England's defining cricketers.

Against expectation and, perhaps, much of the public mood, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's India debut did not happen in Ireland. The 15-year-old batting sensation remained on the bench for the second T20I against Ireland after also missing out in the series opener, even though India had lost the first match by 34 runs.
His omission has surprised many fans and former players. Former England captain Michael Vaughan had said after the first T20I that he "couldn't believe" India left out the teenager.
However, instead of judging the decision, to leave Sooryavanshi out, at face value, it may be worth understanding the Gautam Gambhir-led Indian team management's thinking behind it.
Before the series, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak had made it clear that India did not want to give Sooryavanshi a game by leaving out someone who had already earned his place through performances.
"Vaibhav is very talented, there is no doubt. And the way he has batted in IPL and all the other games, there is no need to tell that he has got a lot of natural abilities. Because in IPL he has faced Jofra, a lot of quick bowlers, a lot of experienced bowlers. And it seems that nothing is bothering him. So he is obviously an extraordinary talent," Kotak had said.
He added, "I am sure that he will get his dues and his opportunities. So I don't think that just to give him an opportunity, we should drop someone who has already been scoring runs. That also won't be right. I think there is a very thin line between trying to give somebody an opportunity and you are being unfair to some other player."
Those comments suggest India are backing the players who helped win the 2026 T20 World Cup. Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan have all been among the runs, and dropping any of them simply to hand Sooryavanshi a debut could send the wrong message.
There may be another reason too. India could be allowing Sooryavanshi time to understand the dressing-room environment before asking him to walk out in national colours. It is not unusual for young players to spend a few games watching senior players prepare, train and handle pressure before getting their first opportunity.
Captain Shreyas Iyer hinted at the same approach during the toss before the first T20I. Asked if Sooryavanshi would debut, he replied: "Unfortunately, no." He then reassured everyone by adding, "He'll (Sooryavanshi) get his opportunity when the time comes."
That opportunity could now come in England, where India begin a five-match T20I series on Wednesday.
If selected, Sooryavanshi, aged 15 years and 93 days, would become the youngest player to represent India's senior men's team, breaking the record held by Sachin Tendulkar, who made his Test debut at 16 years and 205 days in 1989 before making his ODI debut 33 days later.
He would also become the youngest player to feature in a top-tier men's T20 international, surpassing Ireland's Joshua Little, who was 16 years and 309 days old on debut

Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar has backed teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to enjoy a bright international future but believes the youngster should take inspiration from Sachin Tendulkar's discipline, focus and mental strength as he prepares for the biggest stage.
Sooryavanshi, 15, is on the verge of creating history during India's ongoing T20I series against Ireland. If he makes his international debut over the next couple of weeks, the left-handed batter will become the youngest player to represent India in men's cricket, surpassing Tendulkar's long-standing record. The batting icon made his debut against Pakistan in 1989 at the age of 16, while Sooryavanshi is in line to achieve the milestone a year earlier.
There was considerable anticipation around the teenager's debut in the opening T20I in Belfast on Friday. However, head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer retained the T20 World Cup-winning opening combination of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, leaving Sooryavanshi on the bench.
The comparisons with Tendulkar have only intensified since Sooryavanshi's remarkable IPL 2026 campaign, where he amassed more than 700 runs for the Rajasthan Royals. While acknowledging the excitement surrounding the youngster, Vengsarkar urged him to follow the qualities that made Tendulkar a legend of the game.
"When I watched Sachin Tendulkar play, he looked mentally mature for his age. He did extremely well in inter-school tournaments in Mumbai, besides club cricket, where he scored consistently," Vengsarkar told PTI.
“He was mentally prepared to play a higher level of cricket, so that is how we picked him. He was so disciplined, passionate, and focused, and that is a great example for youngsters like Vaibhav to emulate,” he added.
Although Sooryavanshi is still waiting for his maiden international appearance, Vengsarkar believes it is only a matter of time before the teenager gets his opportunity and expects him to make the most of it.
"I am sure he will get the opportunity, and once he gets it, he will grab it with both hands because he is a very good player. He is just unbelievable," Vengsarkar said.
“He has tremendous potential. Some of the shots he plays are unreal. His batsmanship is completely different. He can clear the ground with his bat swing and hand-eye coordination. In T20 format, he has been amazing,” he added.
When asked whether Sooryavanshi possesses the qualities to become a successful Test cricketer, Vengsarkar chose to remain cautious, pointing out that the youngster has largely been judged on his exploits in the shortest format.
“It's very difficult to say because he is currently in the T20 format. I have not seen him play in a longer format,” he said.
“But I'm sure he will do well in that, once picked. We will have to wait and see how he plays in the longer format, which is very important,” Vengsarkar added.

A huge couple of days for Irish cricket beckon as India arrive at Stormont for two T20 internationals on Friday and Sunday [both 13:30 BST].
The world champions will face an Ireland side hit by injuries as Josh Little, Mark Adair, Paul Stirling, Curtis Campher, Barry McCarthy and Jordan Neill miss out.
Matthew Hollard and Jai Moondra have received their first Ireland call-ups and Reuben Wilson is included in the T20I squad for the first time after making his debut in the recent Test match against New Zealand.
However, it's the likelihood of an Indian debutant which is capturing the imagination, as 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi looks set to make his international bow.
Nicknamed 'Baby Boss', Sooryavanshi will break Sachin Tendulkar's record for the youngest debutant for India and will also become the youngest ever player to make a debut in an international T20 among ICC full member countries if he features at Stormont.

The Vaibhav Sooryavanshi phenomenon has crossed borders, with excitement around the 15-year-old prodigy reaching fever pitch in Ireland ahead of his possible India debut in the upcoming T20I series against Ireland.
Sooryavanshi, who captured the imagination of cricket fans with his sensational exploits in the IPL, is in line to make his senior India debut during the two-match series that begins in Belfast on June 26. According to former India and Ireland cricketer MV Narasimha Rao, the buzz surrounding the teenager has already sparked a rush for tickets, with fans from across Europe eager to witness the moment in person.
"I think they (local organisers) will have to put more seats because this stadium (Stormont ground) has only 7000 seats or something. Already, people from other parts of Europe like Paris etc want to come, hopefully, we can find a way to accommodate them," Rao told PTI from Strabane, Ireland.
The former all-rounder believes Sooryavanshi's debut, if it happens, could become a landmark occasion for Irish cricket fans.
"So, I think it will be history, a momentous day if he makes his debut in Ireland. It was unexpected, and in the last 10 days, it's really a big excitement here," he added.
Rao, who played four Tests for India before later representing Ireland in the mid-1990s, feels the conditions in Belfast could suit the young left-hander.
"He's phenomenal, great to watch and I'd watched him on the television during the IPL. He may enjoy batting as the wickets here are generally slow and Ireland doesn't have the same kind of fast bowlers, you know, with pace," he said.
However, Rao expects sterner examinations to come when India travel to England.
"But once he goes to England, it'll be a big test for him because the ball moves there and weather too changes even in the short duration of a T20. But I wish him a good series," he cautioned.
The veteran coach also drew comparisons between Sooryavanshi's batting style and legendary West Indies great Gary Sobers.
"He reminds me — from a few of the matches I watched of Gary Sobers — the high backswing and the bat, straight it comes, and he picks up the ball very quickly. He's so versatile and can play every shot in the game at this young age," he added.
Despite the growing hype, Rao urged the teenager to remain grounded.
"He has God-given talent. But my word is that — like Sachin Tendulkar — he should keep his head down and feet on the ground. It'll be a big test for him because he is a superstar now," he said.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stands on the cusp of history, with the 15-year-old set to make his senior India debut in the first T20I against Ireland in Belfast this week.
The Bihar-born opener earned his maiden call-up on the back of a record-shattering IPL 2026 campaign and a dream run for India A.
The BCCI presented Sooryavanshi with his first senior India jersey at the team hotel. The teenager admitted he could scarcely process the occasion, having dreamed of pulling on the India blue since he first picked up a bat as a child.
Should he take the field at Stormont on June 26 or 28, Sooryavanshi will become the youngest men's international cricketer to represent India, breaking a record held by Sachin Tendulkar for over three decades.

NEW DELHI: India's newest batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will not be travelling alone on his maiden **** ignment with the senior national team, with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia revealing that the board decided to allow the 15-year-old's parents to accompany him on the upcoming white-ball tour of Ireland and England to help him settle into an adult environment.
The teenage opener, who earned his first India call-up after a sensational run of form, has been named in the squad for two T20Is against Ireland and five matches against England, beginning in Belfast on June 26.
Explaining the unprecedented move, Saikia said the board had to consider the unique circumstances surrounding a player so young entering a senior dressing room.
"You see, not all national teams at the senior level have a 14 or 15-year-old in their squad. After many decades, we have someone like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi," Saikia told PTI.
"At one point in time, it was Sachin Tendulkar who made it to the national team at such a young age. When such a young kid is part of the senior team, there are obviously a lot of issues that can crop up," he added.
Saikia said the primary objective was to ensure the youngster felt comfortable in an environment dominated by adults.
"Therefore, to make him comfortable and help him get used to an adult environment, where all the other players are above 18 years of age, and the team management members are also adults, we felt it would be helpful," said the former **** am Ranji Trophy player.
"We are doing this because we believe it will ease a lot of issues as far as Vaibhav is concerned," he added.
Drawing a parallel with school excursions, Saikia underlined that Sooryavanshi remains a schoolboy despite his extraordinary rise.
"Even when a school student goes on an excursion, there is usually a senior person accompanying them. Vaibhav is still a kid. He has only just come out of school, or is perhaps in his final year of school."
"So, we thought it proper to allow his parents to travel with him. I am very happy that his parents are also taking good care of their kid, who is an **** et for Indian cricket not only now but for the next two or three decades," he added.
Sooryavanshi's rise has been nothing short of extraordinary. The explosive opener finished as the leading run-scorer in IPL 2026 with 776 runs at a staggering strike rate of 237.31 and smashed 72 sixes.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar admitted the teenager's performances made his selection unavoidable.
"He has forced us to pick him with how well he's played. We can see the kind of talent he has and we are hopeful, if he gets the opportunity to play for the country, he will show the same ability," Agarkar had said.
Should he feature in Belfast, Sooryavanshi will surpass Sachin Tendulkar and become the youngest player to represent India at the senior level.
