Former US CIA director David Petraeus was at a Ukrainian train station at the very moment a Russian drone struck a passenger train on Sunday, shortly after a diplomatic train carrying former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other foreign dignitaries had passed through.
Kyiv framed the attack as evidence of the increased threat Russia's Vladimir Putin poses to Europe, with Ukraine's rail operator saying it was "quite likely" a targeted attack.
The diplomatic train carrying Johnson, European security officials and other former leaders from Kyiv to Poland had made an early departure from Yahodyn station –– about two kilometers (1.2 miles) from the Polish border –– due to the "constant threat of Russian strikes," said Ukrainian Railways. It had already crossed into Poland by the time of the attack.
Petraeus was traveling on a separate train which was still at Yahodyn station, a Ukrainian Railways statement said. CNN has reached out to Petraeus for comment.
The rail operator said that while it was still clarifying details, it is "quite likely" that the Russian drone could have deliberately targeted the officials' train.

The High Line has hosted forests, billboards, giant pigeons and enough public art to fill a small museum. Its newest resident, however, may be the flashiest yet: a monumental golden "snake" curling through the park in the Meatpacking District.
Bulgari has unveiled auruBOROS—Urban Memory and Collective Dream, a 33-foot pneumatic sculpture created by Berlin-based art and architecture duo Plastique Fantastique. The free installation is now open above Little West 12th Street, near The Standard, High Line, and will remain on view through September 20.
The work resembles a gleaming serpent or double helix, with massive coils rising from beneath the elevated park and wrapping around its concrete supports. Visitors can walk among and through the reflective forms, which shift in appearance as sunlight, shadows and passing New Yorkers bounce off the metallic surface.
The sculpture's name combines aurum, the Latin word for gold, with ouroboros, the ancient image of a serpent eating its own tail. Its location also fits the installation's themes of memory and transformation: the High Line, after all, turned an abandoned freight railway into one of the city's most popular public **** es.
Created by Plastique Fantastique artists Marco Canevacci and Yena Young, auruBOROS is Bulgari's first public art installation in the United States. The duo is known for large-scale inflatable environments, including a giant ring that encircled a Paris footbridge during Nuit Blanche in 2023 and an immersive installation at the 2019 Venice Biennale.

DUBAI, Sept 7 (Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates is building alternative routes for its energy exports and trade to ensure they are not "held hostage" by the ongoing war between the U.S. and Iran, UAE presidential adviser Anwar Gargash said on Monday.
The conflict has had a significant impact on Gulf Arab states, including the UAE, after Tehran fired missiles at the country and attacked its oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
"Our energy exports will not be held hostage, nor will our trade and economic activity," Gargash told the Hili Forum in Abu Dhabi.
The UAE has been expanding port capacity along its eastern coast, as well as developing pipelines, railways and trade routes for alternative corridors, he said.
While acknowledging that relations with Iran could eventually recover, Gargash warned that rebuilding trust after the attacks could take decades.

In south-west Germany, close to the border of France, lies the small town of Elversberg.
It has no railway station and a population of just 13,000, but on Saturday it will enjoy a moment of history as its football team plays in the Bundesliga for the first time.
The club have enjoyed a meteoric rise, having gone from the regional leagues in Germany to the top flight in just a few years.
And their coach Vincent Wagner has not played down the enormity of the task ahead for his side.
"For the team to avoid relegation in the top flight would be like a journey to Mars," he said.

Our ******* ysts just identified a stock with the potential to be the next Nvidia. Tell us how you invest and we'll show you why it's our #1 pick. Tap here.
Strabag is not just building roads, railways and infrastructure. It's building a better profit story too. Record output, a fatter backlog and higher margins gave investors plenty of concrete reasons to chase the stock higher.
Strabag shares surged after the Vienna-listed construction group reported a strong first half and upgraded its full-year outlook.
Output volume rose 12% in the first half to €9.98 billion (about $11.6 billion), taking the company close to the €10 billion mark at the half-year stage for the first time. EBIT jumped 35% to €174.4 million, while net income rose 25% to €119 million.
The order book did even more heavy lifting. Strabag's backlog climbed 27% year on year to a record €36 billion, helped by infrastructure contracts in Germany and railway projects in Australia. The latter reflects the growing contribution from Georgiou Group, the Australian contractor Strabag acquired as part of its international expansion.

Sustainable Growth Advisers (SGA), an investment management company, released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter for its "Global Growth Strategy." The letter can be downloaded here. The SGA Global Growth Portfolio returned 7.4% gross and 7.2% net, compared with 14.9% for the MSCI ACWI and 19.8% for the MSCI ACWI Growth Index. Momentum leadership and enthusiasm around AI infrastructure drove markets, with semiconductor, memory, and hardware stocks accounting for much of the gain. Although the portfolio owned AI beneficiaries, broader holdings lagged despite fundamentals, as median revenue and EPS growth reached 12% and 14% and more than 60% of the holdings beat expectations. SGA believes valuation compression reflects sentiment rather than weaker business quality, leaving the portfolio near its widest discount to the market since inception. The firm continues to favor durable compounders and expects 16% revenue growth and 20% earnings growth over three years. Also, please check the Fund's top five holdings to see its best picks for 2026.

Ukraine launched hundreds of drones across Russia Sunday, killing at least six people in one of Kyiv's largest aerial attacks of the war.
Russia's Ministry of Defense said that it had destroyed 822 Ukrainian drones overnight. Some 600 drones were detected headed toward the Russian capital, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said, with a third destroyed over the Moscow region itself.
An 83-year-old man was killed after a Ukrainian drone hit a private home in the Moscow region, local Gov. Andrey Vorobyov said. He also confirmed that a Ukrainian attack had sparked a blaze at a warehouse belonging to Russian retail giant Wildberries in the town of Podolsk, where images shared by Russian media outlets showed columns of black smoke .
A drone attack targeted three towns in Russia's southwestern Rostov region, killing five people, local Gov. Yury Slyusar said. The attack, with more than 150 drones, damaged several homes and a railway station and sparked a forest fire.
Ukraine has stepped up its attacks on Russia this year, with long-range missiles and swarms of drones increasingly targeting military industries and energy facilities. It has also increasingly pummeled giant Wildberries depots, burning billions of dollars' worth of merchandise and bringing the war home to the Russian public nearly 4½ years into Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

BNSF Railway reported higher second-quarter, pre-tax earnings thanks to a combination of volume growth and higher revenue per load, parent company Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-B) reported on Saturday.
BNSF's pre-tax earnings rose 13.9%, to $2.06 billion, as revenue increased 14.6%, to $6.56 billion. The railway's operating expenses increased 15.6% compared to a year ago, as fuel costs surged 68%. BNSF's operating ratio was 65.4%, an 0.6-point increase.
Quarterly volume rose 6.5%, while average revenue per unit increased 7.6%, primarily from higher fuel surcharge revenue.
Consumer products volume, which includes intermodal and automotive traffic, grew 9.3%. Berkshire said the volume growth was due to "higher intermodal shipments resulting from higher West Coast imports, market share gains, and tightening truck capacity."
Agricultural and energy products traffic was up 11.5% for the quarter. "The volume increases were primarily due to higher grain exports, petroleum fuels and oilseeds and meals," Berkshire reported.

Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE:UNP)'s Big Boy 4014, the world's largest operating steam locomotive, has been touring the country this summer, and grown adults keep tearing up when they see it. CEO Jim Vena said the tour east of the Mississippi wouldn't have been possible without one thing: the railroad operating firm's pending merger with Norfolk Southern, since Union Pacific's own tracks run west of the river. In part, the nostalgia tour is a goodwill campaign for the biggest deal in the company's history.
On the business itself, Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE:UNP) reported a strong quarter. Revenue rose 12% to $6.86 billion, beating the $6.71 billion expected, and adjusted earnings came in at $3.41 a share versus $3.24 expected. The company raised its full-year guidance to high-single-digit earnings growth, up from mid-single digits. The stock rose about 2% in premarket trading. Costs rose too; operating expenses climbed 13% to $4.1 billion, mostly from a 63% jump in fuel costs linked to the Iran war.
Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE:UNP) is trying to buy Norfolk Southern in a deal now valued around $71.5 billion, down from an earlier $85 billion price tag as terms have moved with Union Pacific's stock. It would create the first coast-to-coast U.S. railroad. The day before earnings, Union Pacific settled with Canadian National Railway, a major opponent that had been pushing regulators to demand more information. CN will drop its opposition in exchange for expanded Midwest access and a stake in two jointly owned terminal railroads. Vena called it proof the firm is "ready to move forward in the regulatory process." The deal still isn't approved, though. The Surface Transportation Board (STB) paused its review in May and just this week ordered Union Pacific to make employee-impact data public. Rivals BNSF and Canadian Pacific Kansas City are still lobbying against it, and some shippers and state attorneys general remain opposed. The companies still expect to close the deal in the first half of 2027.
That raises a real question. Is this merger clearing its last real hurdles, or did the CN settlement just remove one opponent out of several?
The core business (Union Pacific's actual railroad operations) is performing well on its own, guidance beat and rose, and pricing power held up despite surging fuel costs. The CN settlement removes a credible opponent and comes with political tailwinds too: Trump has publicly backed the merger and replaced a regulator who could have opposed it. Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE:UNP) and Norfolk Southern say the deal would save shippers $3.5 billion a year and remove 2.1 million trucks from the road. Wall Street responded fast: Baird, RBC, and JPMorgan all raised price targets this week, with RBC citing the CN deal directly as strengthening the merger's case.

The Gran Fondo Isle of Man returns this weekend with a new off-road format, marking the biggest change in the event's 10-year history.
Taking place on Saturday and Sunday, the cycling festival has moved away from its traditional road route in favour of a multi-surface challenge featuring gravel tracks, green lanes, forest trails and historical railway lines.
Organisers said the redesigned course had been created to reflect the Island's landscape and the growing popularity of gravel cycling, while remaining true to the event's focus on endurance and participation.
The flagship Gran Fondo Gravel and Gran Fondo XC MTB races take place on Sunday, with riders setting off from Ramsey at 09:30 BST before finishing about 60 miles (100km) later in Port Erin.
The point-to-point route takes competitors to the island's northern tip before heading south through farmland, wetlands, moorland, forests and coastal scenery.

Jude-fever. Bellingham-mania. No one has come up with a catchy name for it yet, but it’s happening. A London train stop called Bellingham station has been renamed “Jude Bellingham”. West Midlands Railway is offering free train rides for anyone named Jude. “Hey Jude” is on the playlist after every England win with “Three Lions” and “Wonderwall”, the only player with his own ballad.
Only a couple of weeks ago, this World Cup felt like it would be Harry Kane’s tournament. It could yet be Kane’s pinnacle at the end of an extraordinary season of 72 goals and counting, a tally bettered only once, by Lionel Messi. If Messi is one of football’s deities then Kane is the greatest mortal to ever do it. Win the World Cup on Sunday and he will surely end the year on stage in Paris, wearing a shiny suit and holding a golden orb.
But increasingly this tournament looks like the World Cup of Jude Bellingham. It was his goal against Croatia that sparked England’s best 45 minutes so far, his goal against Panama that broke the deadlock, his rapid double that briefly silenced the Azteca, a feat in itself. Bellingham’s first goal in the quarter-final against Norway was a moment of elite technical skill amid a shower of incompetence, his second a display of heightened instincts that earned England a victory they scarcely deserved.
And perhaps this tournament means even more to Bellingham, a player who has been publicly questioned and privately doubted by his own manager, who has been subjected to outside scrutiny unlike his teammates. “Don’t bring Jude,” ran a headline in the Daily Mail earlier this season, suggesting England would be better off without the “divisive soloist” at the World Cup.
“It’s good to put some of the noise aside, and just show my country and my teammates how committed I am to helping us win football matches,” Bellingham said after scoring in England’s first game, the 4-2 win over Croatia in Dallas.

Artificial Intelligence has grown in popularity over the past five years, from something consumers only knew from sci-fi movies to a widely used technology. Many companies are now using AI in some form, and it has become part of everyday life for many consumers, with AI services integrated into internet search engines, phone applications, and other daily interactions. However, as AI is deployed at a faster pace, it is becoming clear that the technology cannot be used as extensively as tech companies had hoped, while companies are realising the value of human workers.
Investors have rushed to buy tech stocks on New York stock market indexes, such as the S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq, in recent years, as more companies launch AI services. Just seven companies, Amazon, Alphabet (Google), Nvidia, Meta (Facebook), Microsoft, Apple, and Tesla, have dominated this focus. An increasing number of City ******* ysts and financial economists are now warning that the AI bubble will eventually burst.
Jeremy Grantham, the founder and investment adviser at a large ******* et manager, said he planned to sell his tech shares as he expected the AI bubble to burst soon. Grantham said that AI was similar to the invention of railways or the internet in that everyone overinvests and, when they realise it is a utility, such as electricity, they understand that there is not much money to be made from the invention itself, except for the companies that build services around it.
Companies and consumers have been wowed by the capabilities of AI technologies, which appear increasingly intelligent. More and more companies are investing in integrating AI services into their operations, while consumers are using AI for basic, everyday tasks, such as internet searches. However, as AI booms, users are slowly losing confidence in certain services, as it becomes clear that there are limits to AI's "intelligence" or human-like capabilities.
In the manufacturing sector, companies have been investing in automation for decades, as engineering and tech firms develop automated equipment capable of performing simple tasks in place of humans. This has helped speed up production lines, reduce the need for humans to conduct more dangerous or monotonous tasks, and lower the price of goods. However, the advent of AI poses a far greater threat to workers in the sector.

Canadian Pacific Kansas City Limited (NYSE:CP) is one of the Best Railroad Stocks to Invest In According to Billionaires. As of Q1 2026, 12 billionaires held the stock.
On July 7, CPKC said it set new June monthly grain records in both Canada and the United States. The company moved 2.8 million metric tonnes of Canadian grain and grain products in June, beating the previous June record from 2020, and said the second quarter also set records for Canadian grain tonnage and carloads. In the United States, CPKC moved 2.5 million metric tonnes of grain in June and 7.5 million metric tonnes in the second quarter, both records for those periods. This is a directly relevant rail operating story because grain is a core bulk commodity for the network. It also shows the value of CPKC's cross-border rail footprint when agricultural volumes are strong, especially since the company's system links Canada, the United States, and Mexico under a single operator.
Canadian Pacific Kansas City Limited (NYSE:CP) operates a single-line transnational freight railway linking Canada, the United States, and Mexico, with access to major ports and key North American markets.
While we acknowledge the potential of CP as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk. Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern today submitted the first portion of information requested by the Surface Transportation Board when it conditionally accepted their revised merger application May 28.
The STB set a deadline of July 27 for the partners to submit the additional data. UP (NYSE: UNP) and NS (NYSE: NSC) earlier said that the data would come in two filings. The start of the formal evaluation and environmental review of the proposed $85 billion merger was delayed pending the new submissions. But, the STB spent months gathering data prior to the railroads' initial merger application in December 2025.
The second filing is expected to cover the enhanced competition aspects of the merger stipulated by the STB.
Tuesday's filing addresses the STB's questions regarding control of local railroads Terminal Railroad ******* ociation of St. Louis (TRRA) and Kansas City Terminal Railway (KCT), and freight car equipment cooperative TTX. TRRA is jointly owned by UP, BNSF (NYSE: BRK-B), CSX (NASDAQ: CSX), CN (NYSE: CNI), and NS, with UP having the largest share. BNSF, UP, NS and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (NYSE: CP) share ownership of KCT.
Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern reiterated in their filing that they do not control TRRA and KCT, which handle interchange traffic between Class I carriers. They offered to divest their stakes in order to preserve that neutrality.

The canal mania of the 1830s. The British railway bubble of the 1840s. The dot-com crash of 2000. Each began with a genuine technological breakthrough that attracted more capital than commercial returns could ultimately justify. Each ended in a recession.
The Bank for International Settlements — the Basel-based institution that coordinates the world's central banks and serves as the global financial system's most authoritative watchdog — sees the $1 trillion AI investment boom in the same lineage. And it's not subtle about the comparison.
"The scale and pace of the current AI investment boom, accompanied by expectations of large productivity payoffs, bear resemblance to these precedents," the BIS writes in its Annual Economic Report 2026, released Sunday. "These episodes ended with an eventual reversal in investment, inducing economy-wide recessions."
The five largest hyperscalers are on pace to spend more than $1 trillion on AI-related capital expenditure across 2025 and 2026 combined — a sum the BIS says is already outpacing their earnings and free cash flow, forcing some to issue debt to cover the gap.
The BIS's concern isn't that AI is a fraud. The technology is real, and the report acknowledges that task-level studies consistently show productivity gains of 20% to 50% in time savings. But the concern is that every major hyperscaler is making the same massive bet simultaneously, driven by the perception that only a handful of players will ultimately dominate the market. That logic, the BIS warns, is a recipe for collective overcommitment.

Central defender James Connolly has left Crewe Alexandra after turning down the League Two club's offer of a new contract.
The 24-year-old Welshman has been considering his future at the Mornflake Stadium for several weeks but has decided to move on after two seasons.
Connolly joined the Railwaymen from Bristol Rovers for the start of 2024-25 and went on to make 71 appearances and score three goals.
He was among seven players offered new deals at the end of last season, but the club said he has chosen to leave "in search of a new challenge".
Lewis Billington, Stan Dancey, Luca Moore and Fin Roberts are the others still to sort their futures out after Conor Thomas agreed a new one-year contract two weeks ago.

Bush.
The company detailed that its CEO Jim Vena was joined at the christening ceremony by Utah's House Speaker, Senate President, and senior officials from NASA, Northrop Grumman, and Wabtec. It added that No. 4547 was also accompanied on the maiden journey by No. 1616, the Lincoln commemorative engine.
The locomotive's design also commemorates America's 250th anniversary. Union Pacific said this is a theme it has been weaving across several initiatives this year, including a cross-country tour by its famed Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive.

BELGRADE, June 27 (Reuters) - Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Saturday he would resign within weeks and the country will hold early presidential and parliamentary elections, following 18 months of anti-government protests.
The announcement by Vucic, who has been in power as president or prime minister for 12 years, came amid persistent anti-corruption demonstrations led by students and triggered by the collapse of an awning at a railway station in the northern city of Novi Sad in November 2024, in which 16 people died.
Protesters, opposition and rights groups allege the railway station disaster was a sign of broader government mismanagement of construction projects and corruption.
"I will be president for only a couple more weeks, and then I will resign," Vucic told throngs of his supporters at a pro-government rally in the capital, Belgrade. Vucic's second and final mandate was due to expire in mid-2027.

Camels with "a bit of fire in them" raced in a remote Australian outback town this weekend at an annual event celebrating the desert beasts first imported in the mid-19th century.
Hundreds of spectators descended on Marree, which has a population of 65 and lies nearly 600 kilometres (370 miles) north of the South Australian capital Adelaide, for a 13-race spectacle on Saturday known as the Marree Camel Cup.
More than 10,000 camels were imported into Australia from 1840, many of them released into the wild with the development of railways and then the arrival of motor vehicles in the 1920s.
Now, estimates of the wild camel population range from 300,000 to a million animals.
Trainer Kyrraley Woodhouse, who started camel racing professionally in 2013, said most of his camels had been taken from the wild to run in the Marree event, which drew more than a dozen competitors.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine said Tuesday its forces struck a railway bridge, a power plant and other key infrastructure targets in Crimea as Kyiv's military seeks to isolate the vital Russian-held peninsula in the latest stage of the 4-year-old war.
The drone attacks added to the woes on the Black Sea peninsula, where Russian authorities have had to suspend gasoline sales to civilians as Ukraine has intensified its recent campaign to disrupt supply lines and the electrical grid at the height of the summer tourist season.
The peninsula was seized by force and illegally annexed by Moscow in 2014. Ukraine's increasing use of long-range strikes has highlighted its ability to inflict painful damage on Russia and put added pressure on the Kremlin while Moscow's advances recently have ground to a near halt, Western ****** ysts and officials say.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said last week that his forces are "isolating Crimea with drones."
"It looks like in the nearest time, Crimea will become an island. This could lead to some very unexpected consequences for Russians," Fedorov said on a blogger's YouTube channel.

Linda Nosková surprised Jessica Pegula to win the Berlin Tennis Open grass event 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 on Sunday following a severe thunderstorm and a big delay.
Lightning, high winds and torrential rain led to the Berlin venue being evacuated before the final, which eventually started five hours late.
Organizers said they were prepared for the forecast weather and took precautionary measures but that "the intensity and speed of the storm made additional actions necessary at very short notice."
The deluged ground took time to drain and infrastructure needed fixing after high winds at the Steffi Graf Stadium. A tunnel leading to a nearby railway station was also flooded.
But Czech eighth seed Nosková initially coped with the chaos better and raced to a 3-0 lead before wrapping up the first set.

Sustainable Growth Advisers (SGA), an investment management company, released its first-quarter 2026 investor letter for its "Global Growth Strategy." A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. The SGA Global Growth Portfolio returned -13.6% (Gross) and -13.8% (Net) compared to the MSCI ACWI return of -3.2% and the MSCI ACWI Growth return of -7.7%. AI disruption narratives significantly affected markets in the first two months of the quarter, leading to declines in software, information services, payments, and insurance brokers. In March, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East caused a spike in oil prices, contributing to market volatility and prompting investors to adopt a more cautious stance. The firm believes prioritizing high-quality businesses with strong balance sheets, durable cash flows, and diversified end markets provides resilience against short-term geopolitical shocks. In addition, you can check the Strategy's top 5 holdings for its best picks for 2026.
In its first-quarter 2026 investor letter, SGA Global Growth Strategy highlighted Canadian Pacific Kansas City Limited (NYSE:CP). SGA Global Growth Strategy stated the following regarding Canadian Pacific Kansas City Limited (NYSE:CP) in its Q1 2026 investor letter:
Canadian Pacific Kansas City Limited (NYSE:CP) was a contributor to performance during the quarter, as solid operational execution helped offset end‑of‑year volume softness. While certain end markets such as automotive, forest products, and intermodal remained pressured by macro factors and supply chain disruptions, strong Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR) execution drove meaningful margin strength, with management highlighting service metrics and discipline around controllable costs. Confidence improved around a 2026 inflection, supported by multiple factors including a record Canadian grain crop expected to move in the first half of 2026, easing auto chip shortages, and tariff headwinds for aluminum and paper beginning to lap in the second half of the year. The U.S. government's focus on removing non-domiciled truckers and commercial drivers license (CDL) applicants from the labor pool seems to be driving freight transportation costs higher and creating a favorable pricing environment for the company.
