The Colorado Rockies have a chance to end their first series of this road trip on a high note. A victory against the St. Louis Cardinals this afternoon would put them one step closer to the 50-win mark in addition to cementing a series win—just their second since the All-Star break.
Right-handed veteran Michael Lorenzen will start for the Rockies today. The 34-year-old is looking to find his footing after falling into a skid. Despite a string of solid appearances in June and July, Lorenzen has a 13.50 ERA and 6.84 FIP over his last three starts. In those three starts he has given up six or more earned runs twice and made it through four innings just once.
Lorenzen's last time out against the Tampa Bay Rays lasted just three innings. He gave up seven earned runs on seven hits—one of which was a home run—and three walks while failing to notch a single strikeout. It was just the second occasion this season that Lorenzen didn't record any strikeouts, and the first time since mid-April.
26-year-old righty Michael McGreevy will toe the rubber for the redbirds in his 23rd start of the season. Now in his third big league year, McGreevy is enjoying the best results of his career. Through 22 starts he has an ERA of 3.59 with 81 strikeouts across 120.1 innings and he leads the Cardinals pitching staff with 2.3 wins above replacement per Baseball Reference.
McGreevy went 4.1 innings against the New York Yankees his last time out, giving up two earned runs on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts. His low-90s four-seam fastball anchors a pitch ****** nal of seven different pitches and he gets whiffs from his changeup, curveball, and sweeper. He also throws a sinker, a traditional slider, and a cutter.

After a wild afternoon of transactions at the MLB trade deadline, there was a baseball game to play in New York and the Cardinals showed up like they had something to prove as they knocked Cam Schlittler, a Cy Young candidate, out of the game after just a few innings and Alec Burleson was a big reason why. The problem is that baseball games still last 9 innings which means the Cardinals bullpen will almost always become a factor for better or worse. Fortunately, the St. Louis bats would save the day.
When is the last time that we've been able to share that the St. Louis Cardinals scored in the first four innings of a game? That happened Monday night and was concurrent with Michael McGreevy having a very positive bounce-back outing (for 4 innings). The result was a Cardinals romp in the Big Apple, but it didn't look like it would go the St. Louis way for awhile.
It started in the top of the 1st inning when JJ Wetherholt drew a leadoff walk. Two batters later, he was able to leisurely cross the plate after Alec Burleson jumped on a Cam Schlittler 97 mph four-seam fastball and deposited it into the short right-field porch in Yankee Stadium giving the Cardinals an immediate 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals started the top of the 2nd inning the way they started the top of the 1st with a walk by Nathan Church. José Fermín then found a 96 mph four-seam fastball to his liking and hammered it for a RBI double scoring Church and upping the Cardinals lead to 3-0.
The top of the 3rd inning was profitable for St. Louis, as well. Iván Herrera drew a leadoff walk and then stole second. Three batters later, Nathan Church singled to left scoring Herrera giving the Cardinals an unexpected 4-0 lead. Schlittler would only last 3 innings before he was removed from the game by Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Seiya Suzuki, Ian Happ and Nico ***** ner drove in two runs apiece and the Chicago Cubs jumped out to a seven-run lead after two innings on the way to a 10-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night.
Happ punctuated an 11-pitch at-bat with a two-run double to get the Cubs' scoring started. Pete Crow-Armstrong's sacrifice fly scored Michael Conforto and Suzuki added a double. Michael Busch and ***** ner added RBI singles to make it 7-0, chasing Cardinals starter Michael McGreevy.
McGreevy (4-9) lasted 1 2/3 innings and gave up eight hits and seven earned runs. He walked two and struck out two as the Cardinals lost their third straight game.
Alec Burleson walked and Lars Nootbaar and Masyn Winn singled as the Cardinals loaded the bases in the fourth. Burelson scored on a sacrifice fly by Nathan Church. Winn hit a ground-rule double that plated the Cardinals' second run of the game in the ninth.
Pedro Ramírez had an infield single that scored ***** ner in the fifth. Suzuki added an RBI single in the eighth, and Carson Kelly drove in a run with a single in the ninth as the Cubs banged out a total of 17 hits.

Trying to describe what happened when the St. Louis Cardinals played a baseball game against the Chicago Cubs Tuesday night is like trying to explain what it looked like when you see a dumpster on fire. It wasn't pretty, but it happened so let's begin.
The Chicago Cubs made St. Louis Cardinals starter Michael McGreevy look like a batting practice pitcher. It started out promising enough (for the first out, anyway) when Pete Crow-Armstrong struck out gloriously. From there, it was downhill at blazing speed. I'll keep this as brief as possible. Suzuki singled. Two batters later, Bregman hit a ground rule double then Ian Happ hit a double which made it 2-0 Cubs before most of the Busch Stadium crowd had even taken their seat.
The top of the 2nd inning was worse. So much worse. Conforto singled. Kelly walked. Two batters later, PCA hit a sacrifice fly then Suzuki doubled, Busch singled, Bregman singled, Happ walked, then Nico ******* ner singled to right. By the time the carnage was over, it was 7-0 Cubs. Even the all-you-can-eat Busch Stadium food deal isn't enough to redeem this type of experience. Michael McGreevy didn't even finish the 2nd inning. That was Gordon Graceffo's job and, to his credit, he kept the Cubs from piling on any more runs until he was replaced by Justin Bruihl in the top of the 5th inning.
The Cardinals would manage to scrounge around for a run in the bottom of the 4th inning when they loaded the bases with an Alec Burleson walk, a Nootbaar infield single, a Masyn Winn single and a Nathan Church sacrifice fly with the bases loaded slightly reducing the humiliation making it 7-1 Cubs.
The Cubs were determined to squash whatever faint hopes the Cardinals might have managed with that menial 1-run bottom of the 4th by grabbing another run in the top of the 5th inning when Nico ******* ner walked then stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch by Justin Bruihl and then scored on an infield single from Ramirez restoring the 7-run lead making it 8-1 Chicago. The Cubs added another run in the top of the 8th to make it 9-1 and another in the top of the 9th to make it 10-1, but who really cares? Oh, the Cardinals did add a run in the bottom of the 9th inning when Masyn Winn doubled in Lars Nootbaar who had walked to make the final score 10-2, but we still don't care.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Alec Burleson and José Fermín homered, Michael McGreevy worked 6 1/3 strong innings and the St. Louis Cardinals snapped a seven-game losing streak against Milwaukee with a 5-1 win over the Brewers on Wednesday night.
NL Central-leading Milwaukee had its four-game winning streak halted.
McGreevy (4-7) struck out six and allowed five hits and one run on his 26th birthday. The 26-year-old right-hander in his third big league campaign made his career-high 18th start of the season.
After the Cardinals' Masyn Winn hit a leadoff double in the first, Jordan Walker followed with an RBI double and Burleson drove in Walker with the third double of the inning.
Walker, who was selected to the All-Star Game for the first time in his career on Saturday, was 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped their first game since Saturday tonight, as the Cardinals put together a string of extra-base hits and the Brewers had no response in a 5-1 loss.
The Brewers threatened against Michael McGreevy right away in the first, as Christian Yelich singled, Jake Bauers walked, and Garrett Mitchell hit an infield single to load the bases with two outs for Luis Lara in his second career game. Lara grounded out to third, though, as McGreevy escaped with no runs on the board.
St. Louis then greeted Kyle Harrison rudely, as Masyn Winn, Jordan Walker, and Alec Burleson all doubled to put the Cards up 2-0 after one. Winn's double was an odd misplay by the defense-first right fielder Lara, who took a ball off the face as he battled the sun.
Cooper Pratt started the second with a single but was caught stealing, and Joey Ortiz and Greg Jones both struck out to allow McGreevy to get through a much cleaner second inning.

The Cardinals coming off a doubleheader sweep at the hands of these same Milwaukee Brewers, and an overall 4-game losing streak faced yet another left-hander tonight in Kyle Harrison. He was not particularly sharp, giving up booming doubles to Jordan and Burleson that resulted in RBI along with a solo HR to Jose Fermin.
On the other side of the ledger, birthday boy (26) Michael McGreevy was very sharp. Arguably among one of the best games he has pitched as a big leaguer. Alec Burleson helped that along with a late 2-run HR to extend the lead to 5-0. The Brewers break thru against Gastelum for a single rally, but the Cards win 5-1.

Interesting to take such a sub-optimal defense alignment to try and squeeze out a little offense with a pitch-to-contact pitcher.

This week's two-start pitcher list lacks a headliner, but it deserves credit for being a deep group with 5-7 viable options, depending on a manager's league format and tolerance for risk. The one-start list is spectacular this week, as there are nearly 10 members who can be started with enthusiasm. On the hitting side, the Brewers and Cardinals are about to embark on a rare eight-game week, which makes their players easy streaming targets.
J.T. Ginn, Athletics, 43% (@ DET, @ CWS): Thanks to a heavy groundball lean, Ginn has been one of baseball's most consistent starters over the past two months (2.48 ERA, 1.21 WHIP). Fantasy managers shouldn't confuse the right-hander's consistency with dominance, as over that stretch he has logged a mediocre 59:27 K:BB ratio. Still, consistent success is good enough to make Ginn a strong option during a two-start week with two road outings. As is the case with many of his teammates, Ginn has been much more successful when working away from his hitter-friendly home park (2.31 ERA).
Ian Seymour, Rays, 33% (vs. NYY, vs. SEA): Since moving into a role as a starter/bulk reliever who follows an opener, Seymour has produced a 2.52 ERA and 0.76 WHIP. The southpaw has also logged an impressive 27:4 K:BB ratio over those five outings, while enjoying the benefits of good fortune (.158 BABIP). **** uming that he handles the Judge-less Yankees in his initial start, Seymour could have a dominant week that will include a start against a Mariners lineup that sits last in OPS vs. lefties.
Joey Cantillo, Guardians, 47% (@ MIN, @ MIA): Cantillo got his season back on track by lowering his walk rate in June before issuing five free passes on July 1. The southpaw collects just enough whiffs (8.8 K/9 rate) to be an effective starter when his control skills are respectable, and this week he will face two offenses that are in the middle of the pack in terms of walk rate. Fantasy managers should view Cantillo as a boom-or-bust option who can be deployed by managers who are not overly concerned with their WHIP.
Michael McGreevy, Cardinals, 31% (vs. MIL, vs. ATL): The combination of strong control skills (2.1 BB/9 rate) and good luck (.252 BABIP) has helped McGreevy to be a ratios **** et (3.12 ERA, 1.11 WHIP) despite poor swing-and-miss abilities (5.7 K/9 rate). The right-hander has been terrific at home this season (1.96 ERA), which helps him to earn a lineup spot despite having a start against a Brewers offense that ranks sixth in OPS vs. righties.

Hello, July. ****** o, elusive win #50 . ****** o and safe travels to Mexico, English World Cup fan contingent. Braves Country, there was a lot to like about tonight’s 5-1 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals.
But first, the wink heard ‘round the world.
The offense would eventually come alive late after being pretty dormant (again), but for seven whole innings, the Braves’ lead was courtesy of Ozzie Albies. Ozzie is more than worthy of being this year’s starting second baseman for the NL at the All-Star game. Our petit sparkplug deserves the world.
Ozzie was doing it all himself versus starter Michael McGreevy, starting with an RBI double in the first to drive in Drake Baldwin. We don’t talk about what else happened there because Ozzie then made up for it with a go-ahead solo homer in the third inning to make it 2-1 Braves.
And thus the score would stay for the majority of the game.

Coming into the 2026 season, not much was expected from the St. Louis Cardinals. ***** ody would have been surprised if they lost 90 games this year, as they were fully diving into their rebuild.
However, they have come out as one of the biggest surprises this year. The youth movement is looking more like seasoned vets with their level of production this year.
Jordan Walker is leading the way on offense, hitting .288/.342/.511 with a career-high 18 home runs and 58 runs batted in, but he's not the only one. JJ Whetherholt is doing well, and so are Ivan Herrera and Alec Burleson. Pitching-wise, the stable of arms has done enough to keep this team above .500, with Andre Pallante leading the team in wins, Michael McGreevy leading the team in ERA, and Matthew Liberatore leading the team in strikeouts.

The St. Louis Cardinals begin a challenging road trip starting Tuesday night in Atlanta as they’ll do battle against the NL East division-leading Braves. Timing may be on the side of St. Louis, though, as there are some numbers that might work in their favor.
If you look at their records on paper, you would think that the St. Louis Cardinals would have their work cut out for them as the Atlanta Braves lead the National League East with a record of 49-32. That might still be the case, but the Cardinals are catching the Braves at the best possible time for two reasons. First, the Braves have lost 7 of their last 10 games. Second, St. Louis will miss Atlanta’s best starting pitcher this season, Chris Sale. Here are the projected starters for the series this week. Note that the Braves have not yet announced a starter for Thursday as of now.

The second installment of the I-70 series continues this weekend with the St. Louis Cardinals visiting the Kansas City Royals.
St. Louis took two of three from Kansas City a month ago at Busch Stadium, and the teams are back together at Kauffman for three more games as the Cardinals try to chip away at the Brewers' NL Central lead and the Royals look to climb out of the AL Central basement.
Friday's middle game of the series features perhaps the most appealing pitching matchup, with Seth Lugo (3.86 ERA) on the mound for the Royals and Michael McGreevy (2.99 ERA) getting the ball for the Cards.
Lugo is back following a brief stint on the concussion injured list after taking a line drive to the head in his most recent start June 10. The veteran has generally been solid this season but the Royals will surely keep a close eye on him in his return.

A mental lapse may cost a PGA Tour winner a spot in the U.S. Open.
On a wild day of U.S. Open final qualifying, the wildest moment occurred in Ontario to conclude an eight-for-three playoff. Down to three players vying for one spot, Max McGreevy made birdie to punch his ticket to Shinnecock, but Matt Wallace and Adam Svensson still needed to settle who would be first alternate from the site.

Svensson ended that quickly, however, when, not realizing the full situation, he picked up his ball marker instead of putting for par. With Wallace already in with par, that gave Wallace the top alternate spot—and likely means the Englishman will wind up at Shinnecock.
"This is a big deal, it's a really big deal," Golf Channel's Brandon de Jonge said. "There's a good opportunity that Matt Wallace is going to play. Often we see the first alternate get in, it's a big mistake made there by Adam Svensson and, unfortunately, at the end of a long day, you can make these type of mental errors."

With a couple of exceptions, Michael McGreevy gave the St. Louis Cardinals a good start Sunday. Fortunately, the St. Louis Cardinals woke up in time to complete the sweep of the Cincinnati Reds Sunday.
My fear is that the narrative of this game would be all of the runners the Cardinals stranded on base Sunday. Through the first several innings, St. Louis had left 11 runners on base including a bases-loaded opportunity in the bottom of the 1st inning. That combined with Michael McGreevy leaving two pitches right in the middle of the zone in the top of the 3rd inning resulting in home runs from McLain and Stephenson giving Cincinnati a 2-0 lead.
The St. Louis bats would greet the Cincinnati Reds bullpen in the bottom of the 5th inning as Alec Burleson slapped a double down the left field line followed by Jordan Walker smoking a 93 mph four-seam fastball to the left-center field wall scoring Burleson and cutting the Reds lead in half at 2-1.
Bryan Torres would eliminate that lead altogether giving the Cardinals their first lead of the game when he crushed a 92 mph four-seam fastball into the right field stands making it 3-2 Cardinals.
Michael McGreevy's outing was a successful one. He gave St. Louis 6 solid innings allowing just 5 hits, 2 earned runs with 5 strikeouts and no walks.
