Here are some observations from Day 13 of Lions training camp in Allen Park on Sunday.
▶ The most notable development out of Sunday's practice was Tate Ratledge's move to the first-team center position. While Ratledge wasn't at center for the full practice — Juice Scruggs also took reps at center — he took a healthy majority. When Ratledge was at center, the team deployed Ben Bartch at left guard and Christian Mahogany at right guard. When Scruggs was in at center, Mahogany and Ratledge played guard.
The practice was sloppy for the offense, in part because it started to pour halfway through. By our count, Ratledge had two botched snaps, and Scruggs had four. One or two of them might've been on quarterback Jared Goff; it was kind of hard to tell in the rain.
Part of the moving and shaking stems from the fact that, as Lions coach Dan Campbell mentioned on Saturday, they have no idea who their "best five" are with Cade Mays on the shelf. Prior to his injury, they only needed to figure out one spot (left guard) along the offensive line, with two clear favorites for the job: Mahogany and Bartch.
Now the situation is exponentially more complicated: While Seth McLaughlin played well at center in Thursday night's preseason game, he likely doesn't have the preferred size; Scruggs was dealing with a soft-tissue injury before returning to practice this week; Ratledge has never played the position before. Even if Scruggs was the clear front-runner for the gig, they'd likely want to hammer down a contingency plan before going into the season. It's clear the Lions are invested in preparing Ratledge to play center if it comes down to it.

Here are some observations from Day 12 of Lions training camp in Allen Park on Saturday.
▶ The Lions held a glorified walk-through at Saturday's practice. Today's observations will be heavily slanted toward a newsy press conference from Lions coach Dan Campbell and the deployment of several players who returned from injury.
▶ Interior offensive lineman Juice Scruggs returned to the practice field on Saturday. The team did very few 11-on-11 reps, but when they did, Scruggs manned the first-team reps. Lions coach Dan Campbell said that Scruggs is still very much a candidate to win the starting center job in Cade Mays' absence. Former undrafted free agent Seth McLaughlin manned all the first-team reps last week, with Mays and Scruggs not practicing, and more than held his own in Detroit's preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.
While we haven't seen it yet, Campbell also said he expects right guard Tate Ratledge to begin working at center, just in case they need him to play the position in a pinch. Ratledge began working at center for the first three days of last year's camp before moving to right guard; we haven't seen him take a snap at center since.
"We're going to work him a little bit," Campbell said. "I don't know how much we'll do in team (drills), but certainly we're going to be snapping him some pre-practice. And then he's been going through some of the calls, things like that. So, we're just prepared. We have to be willing to go wherever we can go with this."

The Florida State Seminoles are taking their search for talent in the 2028 recruiting cycle to the state of Texas. On Friday, four-star wide receiver Damarion Mays announced his offer from the Seminoles.
"#AGTG blessed to have received an offer from Florida State," Mays said on social media.
He is ranked as the nation's No. 111 overall recruit and the No. 16 wide receiver in 247Sports composite rankings. He's listed as the No. 12 prospect in the state of Texas as well.
Mays made his name known as a freshman at Life Oak Cliff High School in Dallas, Texas. He registered 68 receptions for 1,640 yards and 13 touchdowns while averaging an amazing 24.1 yards per catch. Plus, he added 164 kickoff return yards. As a sophomore, Mays played at North Crowley High School in Fort Worth, Texas. He had another very productive season with 54 receptions for 843 yards and 11 scores. He averaged 15.6 yards per catch.
The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder has garnered around 40 scholarship offers due to his performance in his first two years of high school, which will make FSU's pursuit of him a challenging one. Mays also has offers from the Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, Miami Hurricanes, Texas Longhorns, Texas A&M Aggies, Texas Tech Red Raiders, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oklahoma Sooners, Ole Miss Rebels, and more.

"It's weird for one of your best players on defense and leading tackler to also be one of your most improved players," safeties coach Taylor Mays said of senior safety Alex McLaughlin's offseason.
The three-time First Team All-American, who is entering his second year in his role with the Washington Huskies, did not hold back with his praise of the senior following Thursday's practice. McLaughlin, who transferred to Washington ahead of the 2025 season after two standout years at Northern Arizona, will enter his second season at Montlake after earning an All-Big Ten honorable mention last fall.
After leading the Huskies with 94 tackles, McLaughlin has taken a major leap in his abilities as a vocal leader both on and off the field for Ryan Walters' defense.
"I really like where he's at right now," Mays told the media on Thursday.
With fellow safety Makell Esteen and cornerbacks Tacario Davis and Ephesians Prysock all leaving the program after 2025, McLaughlin has stepped into a leadership role in the secondary as one of its best and most experienced players.

Through the early days of fall camp, freshman safety Gavin Day has made the most of his opportunities with the Washington Huskies.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound former four-star recruit has made his presence felt in the secondary thanks to his high-end range, athleticism, and physicality, building on a strong showing during spring practice.
Now, as position coach Taylor Mays looks to fill out his depth chart, Day has continued to make plays and shown off his value. On Thursday, the product of Faith Lutheran High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, stepped in front of a pass from quarterback Treston Kini McMillan, intended for wide receiver Justice Williams in the end zone, for his first interception of fall camp and returned the pass to midfield before he was pushed out of bounds.
"Gavin Day is improving," Mays said on Thursday. "I would say he's definitely improving from where he was in the spring to now; he's doing the things that we need him to do, that he wants to do for himself to become a player that can contribute this year. So, he's getting there. He still has a little bit of a ways to go, but he's definitely on pace for what we expect out of him going into his freshman year."
The Seattle native and three-time First Team All-American in his college career at USC, where he played a similar style to what Day showed on his high school film, was very detailed when asked what's next in the freshman's development.

Before Matthew Stafford became one of the NFL's most dangerous downfield passers with the Los Angeles Rams, his game underwent a pivotal evolution with the Detroit Lions under former offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell.
Earlier in his career with the Lions, Stafford told The Athletic's Robert Mays that Detroit's offensive schemes prioritized horizontal efficiency to protect the quarterback. But when Bevell arrived in 2019, he completely altered Stafford's mindset regarding sack avoidance.
"In the offenses before that, sack avoidance was a huge thing and being efficient and all that," Stafford explained. "And the way that we did that in that offense was get the ball out of your hand fast. Let's get it underneath, let's try to catch and run... And I think when I played in Bev's offense, sack avoidance was, 'Hey, if it's not there, check it down.' Those were the things that kept the sticks moving rather than just calling things underneath and then every once in a while giving an opportunity to throw."
Stafford's yards per passing attempt increased by almost two years between his 2018 season in Jim Bob Cooter's offense and the 2019 season with Bevell. And while Stafford only spent two seasons with Bevell before his 2021 trade to the Rams, he averaged 8.0 yards per attempt versus 7.1 in the previous 10 seasons. Stafford also averaged 9.4 intended air yards per attept under Bevell after averaging just 6.9 under Cooter.
Bevell encouraged Stafford to push the ball downfield aggressively on unexpected downs, leveraging his elite arm strength to manipulate deep zone coverages. Stafford recalled a pivotal moment during a matchup against the Raiders in Oakland that exemplified this shift.

As the month of July marches on, the first report dates for the Detroit Lions' 2026 training camp are now less than three weeks away.
With excitement building for the 2026 Lions campaign, CBS took a look at each franchise's top storyline heading into training camp.
CBS writes that the biggest training camp storyline for the Lions is the offensive line shuffle in front of quarterback Jared Goff.
This was a tight call between the offensive line and the health of safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph. Ultimately, the offensive line got the nod. All-Pro right tackle Penei Sewell is switching to the left side after Taylor Decker's departure, and first-round pick Blake Miller is taking over at right tackle. Cade Mays is the new center and should add major size and power there, though this will be his first season as a full-time starter. Guards Christian Mahogany and Tate Ratledge must step up. - Zachary Pereles, CBS
The Lions' offensive line regression was one of the primary factors that contributed to Detroit's 9-8 record and fourth-place finish in the NFC North last season.

There is no greater barbershop debate than the one deciding the greatest of all time.
Who was the greatest receiver of all time—Jerry Rice or Randy Moss? Who is the greatest basketball player of all time—Michael Jordan or LeBron James? Who is the greatest baseball player of all time—Babe Ruth or Willie Mays? Who is the greatest quarterback of all time—Tom Brady or Joe Montana?
The latter was put to the test in a recent post from an X user on Wednesday. A photograph of eight legendary quarterbacks was posted, and the post asked people to pick the worst quarterback out of the group. The players in the photo include Brady, Montana, Peyton Manning, Patrick Mahomes, Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, Aaron Rodgers and Dan Marino.
Brady is probably the safest in the photo considering he is widely regarded as the greatest quarterback of all time. It's hard to beat seven Super Bowl rings, with championships with two different franchises.
Marino is the only quarterback pictured without a Super Bowl ring, but from strictly a passing perspective, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who did it better than the former Miami Dolphin. Arguments can be made for and against every quarterback in the photo.

The July 2 tilt between Milwaukee Brewers flamethrower Jacob Misiorowski and electric Reds starter Chase Burns represented one of the great pitching matchups of the season for Milwaukee, though it has a long way to go to mirror the matchup exactly 63 years earlier.
On July 2, 1963, the Milwaukee Braves played deep into the night at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, when future Hall of Famers Warren Spahn and Juan Marichal waged a battle that won't be matched in modern baseball.
The Giants won the game in the 16th inning, 1-0, when Willie Mays belted a home run to left field against Spahn, making a winner of Marichal, who had matched Spahn over 16 innings.
The final lines: Marichal allowed eight hits with four walks and 10 strikeouts in 16 innings. Spahn, at 42 years old, allowed nine hits, one intentional walk and two strikeouts in 15⅓. Spahn threw 201 pitches, and Marichal threw 227.
The game lasted a relatively economical 4 hours and 10 minutes, finishing at 2:25 a.m. CT back in Milwaukee.

Billy Mays rose to popularity as a pitchman in the early 2000s
He was best known for selling products like OxiClean and Kaboom
Mays unexpectedly died of a heart attack on June 28, 2009, at the age of 50
It has been 17 years since Billy Mays' career as a pitchman for products like OxiClean and Kaboom was cut short when he died of a heart attack at the age of 50.
The Pittsburgh native, who died on June 28, 2009, got his start selling goods to people on the Atlantic City boardwalk. It was there that he refined his skills as a salesman, adjusting his voice and developing what would become his signature style of high-energy, loud-volume pitches.

Nate Tice & Robert Mays rank the top 12 mastermind playcallers in the NFL heading into the 2026 season. The duo kick things off with three NFC West head coaches at the top, debating the play-calling genius displayed by Sean McVay (Los Angeles Rams), Kyle Shanahan (San Francisco 49ers) and defending champ Mike Macdonald (Seattle Seahawks). Ben Johnson rounds out the top four for his masterful command of the Chicago Bears offense.
Next up, Nate and Robert give some love to a pair of defensive coordinators with VERY different approaches in Vic Fangio (Philadelphia Eagles) and Brian Flores (Minnesota Vikings), plus a few former star coordinators: Jesse Minter and Brian Schottenheimer, now head coaching the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys respectively.
The duo round things out with some offensive gurus that don't receive enough appreciation: Matt LaFleur (Green Bay Packers), Liam Coen (Jacksonville Jaguars), Shane Steichen (Indianapolis Colts) and Mike McDaniel (Los Angeles Chargers), plus plenty of honorable mentions that didn't quite make the list.
(3:15) - Top 4 playcallers: NFC genius head coaches
(37:10) - Playcallers 5-8: solid foundations vs. innovation

The Detroit Lions will be depending upon a trio of young offensive linemen in 2026.
Both guards—Tate Ratledge and Christian Mahogany—have double-figure starts under their belt now, but Ratledge and Mahogany are in their second and third NFL seasons, respectively. The Lions are expected to start first-round 2026 NFL Draft pick Blake Miller at right tackle.
That's a large amount of youth that will join the more experienced Penei Sewell and Cade Mays along the Lions offensive line.
With Detroit still unable to put on the pads and have live contact during OTAs, new Lions OC Drew Petzing was asked what his points of emphasis are with his young trench players during OTAs.
"Yeah, I think the big thing is the learning aspect of we're still processing, we're still running different schemes, we're still making sure that we're ****** ignment sound and know where we're going and how we're doing and can do it quickly, because the game happens fast.

CHICAGO (AP) — Matt Chapman joined some select San Francisco baseball company — including Willie Mays — with his massive day at the plate on Friday.
The 33-year-old third baseman hit his fourth career grand slam, a three-run homer and added a sacrifice fly to finish with a career-high eight RBIs in the Giants' 18-3 rout of the slumping Chicago Cubs. The eight RBIs tied the Giants' San Francisco-era individual game record, shared by five others. The first to do it after the team relocated from New York in 1958 was Mays in on April 30, 1961.
The other Giants to accomplish the feat were Orlando Cepeda (July 1961), Brandon Crawford (July 2019), Joc Pederson (May 2020) and Wilmer Flores (May 2025).
“I feel like I’ve been doing a good job with runners in scoring position and I’ve been having a lot of opportunities with guys on base,” said Chapman, in his 10th major league season and third with the Giants.
Chapman hit his slam in San Francisco’s six-run fourth — and in a light rain — off Edward Cabrera. It barely reached Wrigley Field’s left-center basket.
