Even though he gave up a home run, lefthander Lucas Gordon put together a decent enough start for Birmingham to win the game, but the bullpen couldn't hold up its end of the bargain. Gordon surrendered three runs on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts, but Pierce George gave up a game-tying double followed by a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth that immediately sent their chances of winning off a cliff.
The Barons outhit Montgomery, 10-6, with 60% of those mashed for extra bases: four doubles and two home runs. B-ham went 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left five on base, and the Biscuits were nearly identical on that front except they left four on instead. Anthony DePino (one) and Colby Shelton (two) accounted for three of the four two-baggers and posted two hits apiece. The long ******* , however, were both solo shots, one by Jorge Corona and the other by Adam Fogel.

The tennis tour is heading into one of its busiest stretches of the season, with the North American hardcourt swing just around the corner. The sport's biggest stars are already ramping up their preparations for the season's final Grand Slam, the US Open. Home favorites Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe have arrived in Washington, D.C. for the ATP 500 event (July 27-August 2).

Shelton has arrived in the US capital after a rather forgettable Wimbledon campaign, where he was sent packing in the first round by qualifier Otto Virtanen. The American has produced mixed results, winning just one match at the ATP Masters 1000 level this season and just five matches across the three completed Grand Slam events.
He has, however, won three ******* les, one on each surface, including two at the 500 level (Dallas and Munich). Former Anniston standout Roq Montgomery has found a fresh start.
After failing to see the field during his third year at Alabama, the 6-foot-3, 330-pound offensive lineman entered the transfer portal this offseason and landed at Western Kentucky, where he'll suit up for head coach Tyson Helton this fall.
Helton offered his first impressions of Montgomery on Tuesday during Conference USA Media Day in Arlington, Texas.
"He's a big man. He's a strong man," Helton said. "I say big men lead the way, and he's the definition of that."
Helton noted he was familiar with Montgomery dating back to his high school days at Anniston. As a senior, Montgomery was named the Alabama Sports Writers ****** ociation's 2022 Class 4A Lineman of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to an 11-1 record.

Even though only some 50 men born in the state of Utah have reached the majors, there is enough talent to field a mythical dream team comprised of those who were either born in Utah or went to high school there; college MLB products are another story.
So, with a nod to the MLB All-Star game in Philadelphia next week, here is one writer’s Utah dream team, with birthplace/Utah high school and years played in the majors:
Catcher: John Buck (Taylorsville High, 2004-14) — Born in Wyoming, Buck was drafted in the seventh round out of high school by the Houston Astros in 1998. He worked his way through the minors and made his MLB debut June 25, 2004, for the Kansas City Royals after being traded there the day before.
Buck also played for the Toronto Blue Jays, Miami Marlins, New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels. He was an All-Star in 2010 — his only season with the Blue Jays. Buck had 134 career homers with an average of .234.

Two of the keys for Cleveland's near and long-term future are how both of their first-round picks perform in their rookie seasons. Both Spencer Fano and KC Concepcion are under a lot of pressure to show that they have what it takes to be long-term pieces in this league.
It is going to be a challenge for both of them, as the Browns offense is very young throughout and will also have a major question mark at the quarterback position. With all of the aside, the Browns have had a very rough go at it with their first-round picks in the last 20 years.
We are examining the careers of the last 10 to see which ones were worth the selection and which ones were a bust. Spoiler alert, it's heavily weighted to the latter.
Cleveland went with the defensive line to start the 2015 draft and took one of the biggest busts of that first round. Shelton had potential but never grew into it. It is always a risk going DL in the first round because if the result isn't a home run, it is likely a failure.
DL and OL were within just a few picks away from each other with the intent of bolstering their lines of scrimmage, it didn't work. Erving spent only two seasons in Cleveland before being traded to Kansas City in 2017.

The Minnesota Twins have placed All-Star outfielder Byron Buxton on the 10-day IL with a right hip strain. He suffered the injury back in May, but re-aggravated it on July 5 against the New York Yankees while attempting to play through the discomfort. The injury will hold Buxton out through the All-Star Game, forcing him to miss any competition on All-Star weekend.
Twins general manager Jeremy Zoll is confident that Buxton will make a full recovery and will be fully healthy for the back half of the MLB season. Zoll spoke about the injury after placing Buxton on the IL.
"Originally, we gave it a few days and we were hoping that that had cleared it up," said Zoll. "When the symptoms came back in the game, it's not as bad as it was, but it's still back...
As [manager Derek Shelton and head athletic trainer Nick Paparesta] worked through it with Byron, just thinking about the idea of kind of getting caught in this repeated cycle, the best thing at this point is probably just to give it clear down time to let it fully resolve itself so that he's not in this in-between state and can feel fully confident hopefully for a full second half post-All-Star."

Matthews grimaced after throwing a 95 mph fastball out of the strike zone to Ben Rice. Trainer Nick Paparesta and manager Derek Shelton went to the mound, and Matthews gave a thumbs-up before throwing one warmup pitch.
Matthews threw three more pitches out of the strike zone to Rice for his third walk of the fifth, was lifted from the game and replaced by Travis Adams.
Matthews took a 6-1 lead into the fifth and allowed four runs and three hits in 4 2/3 innings. He allowed a two-run homer to Max Schuemann earlier in the fifth and a solo homer to Jasson Domínguez in the fourth.
The right-hander entered the game 4-5 with a 4.15 ERA in nine starts this season.

June 30 (UPI) -- Otto Virtanen outlasted Ben Shelton in a four-hour, two-minute thriller, upsetting the top-ranked American on Tuesday in his Wimbledon 2026 opener.
The No. 140 player in the ATP Tour singles rankings converted 3 of 8 break point chances, while his highly-favored No. 5 foe failed to convert 11 of 12 break opportunities. With his win, the Finnish underdog advanced to Wimbledon's second round for the second time in three years. He has yet to advance to the third round of a Grand Slam.
"I had a great month before this," Virtanen said on the ESPN broadcast. "I played a lot of grass matches. I always enjoy playing here. Last year, I unfortunately missed due to injury. Two years ago I had a great time here.
"It feels so good to be back."

Trinity Rodman is officially on break. When the professional soccer player and Olympic gold medalist joins our Zoom call in June, she's just wrapped up a "not-so-friendly" match against international rival Brazil in preparation for the 2027 Women's World Cup. ICYMI, Rodman and the rest of the USWNT fended off their opponents in a highly physical game on June 9: Brazil received eight red cards and four coaches were escorted off the pitch as team USA fought their way to a 1-0 win — the first on Brazilian home soil since 1997.
"That game last night was crazy, no?" Rodman cackled in a Instagram Story after the match, poking fun at how aggressive the battle was between both players and fans. "Watching all the media and stuff and how Brazil is just so mad. We just played your game, like imagine," Rodman went on to say. Still, Rodman says their team is her favorite to watch play in the World Cup.
"We just played Brazil last night and it was crazy, but I am excited to watch Brazil play [this year]. I've always loved players on their team and just the way that they, their presence on the field," Rodman says in a chat with Popsugar to discuss her latest partnership with State Farm. "I think playing against them sucks, but I think they embody soccer and their fandom is also crazy."

Former South Carolina second baseman Karley Shelton has committed to Tennessee softball out of the transfer portal, she announced June 15.
Shelton started all 60 games for the Gamecocks and was one of their top performers. Shelton will have one year of eligibility left after playing the last three seasons at South Carolina, and she'll reunite with her former Gamecocks teammate Sage Mardjetko, who transferred to Tennessee after the 2024 season.
"See you soon Rocky Top! #govols " Shelton wrote in an Instagram post.
Shelton started all 60 games for the Gamecocks and was one of their top performers. Fritz was the biggest test, ranked No. 9 and the biggest threat to Shelton's national No. 1 ranking.
In addition to being Shelton's third championship win of the season, it's his third win on as many surfaces, claiming victory in Munich on clay and in Dallas on the hard court.
Shelton's win gives him 250 points in the live rankings, which keeps him at No. 5 internationally. Alex de Minaur threatened to pass him by with a finals appearance in the Hertogenbosch 250, but he lost, giving Shelton a 50-point advantage.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Ryan Kreidler’s RBI double off the center-field wall in the eighth inning scored Luke Keaschall and completed the Minnesota Twins’ comeback in a 5-4 win against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.
Kreidler had a pinch-hit single and scored the tying run in the seventh for Minnesota, which took two of three games in the series. Victor Caratini hit a two-run homer for the Twins in the fourth.
Andrew Morris (2-2) pitched a scoreless inning of relief, striking out three of the four batters he faced. Yoendrys Gómez earned his sixth save of the season and fifth with the Twins.

Florida infielder Kolt Myers became the first position player to enter the transfer portal on Thursday, according to Andrew Riedell of College Baseball Central.
Myers came to Florida fresh off a state **** le with St. John's Country Day in 2024. He slashed .305/.455/.475 as a high school senior with flashes of extra-base power — two homers, one triple and six doubles. Perfect Game ranked Myers No. 149 overall in the class of 24 and No. 39 among shortstops in the country.
With Colby Shelton and Cade Kurland blocking both middle infield spots during Myers' freshman year, he took a redshirt and did not play. He played in 26 games, primarily at third base with some time at shortstop and second base, this past season, but Myers only slashed .185/.250/.247. With a strikeout rate approaching 40% and a wRC+ of 28 — where 100 is the league average — Myers was not ready to play regularly against SEC arms.

With Colby Shelton and Cade Kurland blocking both middle infield spots during Myers' freshman year, he took a redshirt and did not play. He played in 26 games, primarily at third base with some time at shortstop and second base, this past season, but Myers only slashed .185/.250/.247. With a strikeout rate approaching 40% and a wRC+ of 28 — where 100 is the league average — Myers was not ready to play regularly against SEC arms.
Myers is the fifth Florida Gator to enter the transfer portal, following a quarter of arms. McCall Biemiller, Matthew Jenkins and Cooper Moss announced on Monday, the first day the portal opened, and Christian Rodriguez followed on Thursday.
