A little nervy, somewhat disjointed at times and by no means a complete ninety-minute performance from Sunderland, but given the events of the past week, encompassing the fallout from the Ipswich loss and a lack of breakthroughs in the transfer market, this was the kind of victory that we were never going to turn our noses up at.
For everyone connected with the club, a marathon season awaits.
Points on the board and a genuine sense of momentum are vital, and after Wilson Isidor swept home his first goal of the campaign having failed to take an even more gilt-edged opportunity minutes earlier after being teed up by Granit Xhaka, he showed why the club were willing to extend his contract and why Régis Le Bris was determined to keep him on Wearside, to the point of being unusually forthright when asked about it two weeks prior.
A pressure game? High stakes? Maybe not, but don't underestimate the importance of the win, not least because the naysayers would've been queuing up to throw verbal barbs had we not delivered when it mattered.
The victory itself and the fact that we're now off and running for 2026/2027 felt far more satisfying than the display on which it was founded, as Sunderland weren't brilliant on Sunday — far from it, in fact.

Daizen signed for the Tractor boys in a £10 million deal last month, after a hugely successful four and a half year stint in the Hoops that saw him score 79 goals in 212 appearances, winning 10 major honours along the way.
Unsurprisingly the **** anese international was named in Gary O'Neil's starting line up, and despite a packed Portman Road roaring their team on in their Premier League return, it would have felt a million miles away from Daizen's last league appearance in a Celtic shirt, which saw him score a vital goal in a memorable last day **** le win over Hearts in front of 60,000 supporters.

While others spend their summers firefighting, Sunderland are quietly and calmly building. Stable ownership, a united dressing room and a coaching staff fully invested in the project have turned the club into one players want to join and more importantly, want to remain.
In years gone by, the reality was very much the opposite; Sunderland were always the club that paid over the odds for bang average players that didn't want to live in the North East but wanted to chase the bright lights of London, or live in the mansions of Cheshire.

England international? Tick. Premier League winner? Tick. At least 35 years old? Erm, tick that too. Chelsea's transfer policy has taken a surprising turn this summer, ripped up and rewritten, and it's led the club to the doors of Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck.
Chelsea are working on deals to add both to Xabi Alonso's squad in time for the start of the new season. They have also missed out on other experienced targets such as John Stones, 32, who is set for a move to Inter Milan, and Granit Xhaka, 33, who Sunderland are determined to keep as captain.
It is a stunning departure from one of the most aggressive youth-focused transfer strategies in Premier League history, which has brought waves of potential to Stamford Bridge replete with lavish decade-long contracts. BlueCo have been dogmatic, signing only one player over 25 – defender Tosin Adarabioyo – since the summer of 2023. Last season, Chelsea signed 10 players ranging in age from 18 (Estevao, Kendry Paez) to 23 (Joao Pedro).

On the back of promising performances in pre-season friendlies against York City and Liverpool, Régis Le Bris is going to have a midfield selection dilemma ahead of the new season.
Granit Xhaka, Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki all showed their class at the World Cup, with Sadiki and Diarra standing out — Diarra bagging a couple of goals for Senegal and Sadiki shining in DR Congo's defeat to England in the round of sixteen.
Whilst these lads are currently on holiday and enjoying a well-deserved break after successful World Cup campaigns, there's an opportunity afoot for other lads to work their way into Le Bris' thinking going into the opening game against Ipswich Town.
Chris Rigg and Enzo Le Fée have been deployed in central positions during our two pre-season fixtures and have been standout performers. Rigg has clearly been on a fitness programme over the summer and has come back a couple of pounds stronger, whereas Le Fée has picked up where he left off at the back end of last season, scoring a fantastic solo strike against Liverpool on Saturday night.
The few games that we played last season without Xhaka in the starting eleven showed just how much we struggle without him, and although he's a certainty to be the first name on the team sheet most weeks, he's coming into the twilight of his career and will not be able to play up to potentially fifty games if we have a successful season.

Argentina defeated Switzerland 3-1 in the World Cup, meaning they will face England in the semi-final and for the first time in Lionel Messi’s career.
As always Messi was instrumental in the victory, although VAR also played a prominent role once again. Still, it was Julian Alvarez who was the match winner with a wonder strike in the second-half of extra time.
Switzerland started the better of the two sides. However, the 69,000-strong crowd (ignoring visible empty seats), were almost exclusively supporting the South Americans, and they were soon lifted by Argentina’s captain. Messi worked his magic to create an opportunity for a team-mate, resulting in a corner. Moments later Alexis Mac Allister rose highest to head from the corner, which was, of course, delivered by Messi.

Peter: I think a great signing for free would be John Stones, his experience could be similar to our signing of Silva. I know Stones could be a bit injury **** e but I think it's a risk worth taking, and he would help our inexperienced centre backs on and off the field.
Benjamin: Secure Vozinha now!! What are we waiting for? He has mature shoulders, can clearly play out from the back and is confident in his decision making, something Sanchez can only dream of! And he's a marketing dream!
Mohammed: I would try my best to get John Stones. Xhaka is **** e to a red card and should perhaps be avoided.

I've seen rumblings of frustration on social media recently regarding Sunderland's lack of incomings so far in this transfer window, but is it justified?
To put it bluntly, no, in my opinion. The lads are due back in for pre – season training on Wednesday, with seven weeks and a full pre – season schedule between now and the start of the Premier League season. Last season aside, Sunderland under Kyril Louis-Dreyfus have not been fast starters in the transfer window, preferring to wait for the right opportunities and possibly even surveying the early business done by other clubs.
Sunderland aren't in danger of being left behind, and we needn't panic because we haven't signed any players by the early days of July. Any potential free agent signings have only been out of contract for a matter of days, players are still on holiday, and most vitally, a lot of players are still in action at the World Cup, with many focusing on their national sides before entertaining any thoughts of transfers.
If Sunderland are still yet to sign someone by the eve of the new season, by all means be discontented, but that won't happen. We will make signings, we will miss out on players, others will leave, and most importantly, Florent Ghisolfi will have Sunderland in a position to compete in every competition by the time the transfer window closes. The ownership and recruitment team have done enough to earn that trust, I'm sure we can all agree.
Despite being quick out the blocks last year, this summer is very much about quality over quantity. We do need to bolster the squad, but I very much doubt our incomings will be in double figures. In my opinion, we need another 6 / 7 at most, with 2 – 4 improving the starting line – up, and the rest providing quality back-up and rotation for European competition. The foundations built last year are strong, and as we've seen with Granit Xhaka, Sunderland won't be rolling over to interest in their stars.

I cannot believe how many people believe the rubbish that Fabrizio Romano comes out with. Do people not know that he's more of an influencer than a journalist? He makes a story up and lets others run with it as though it were true. That is how he makes his money — and he's pretty good at what he does.
He's the Italian version of Alan Nixon, and I don't believe one word that comes out of his mouth. Would these idiots believe him if he said the Earth was flat? Or that the Moon was made of green cheese?
Our club is now run professionally, and players will only leave on Sunderland's terms. Shame on the idiots slagging off Granit Xhaka over a false story put out by someone who makes a living out of causing trouble.

That was Mrs L's verdict after listening to my final deliberation about the Xhaka saga. Whilst it appears to be over, disappointingly it had triggered dark and negative thinking. I don't like it.
Mrs L is probably right then. I need to be more "stoic".
But what does that mean, and what do I need to change to survive the pre-season, never mind next season and Europe? I wasn't entirely sure what "stoic" really meant beyond "get a grip". So, to be better prepared, I did what any self-respecting obsessive would do. I looked it up.
Good timing as well, as England at the World Cup is stressing me out, never mind the situation at Sunderland.

I was personally really sad to see Dennis Cirkin leave this summer. Not only because he’d been with us on our journey to European football, but because whenever he seemed to be looking like he could go to the next level, an injury would find its way to him.
After the 24-year-old finally hung up his wrist brace on Wearside, and with the seemingly imminent departure of Arthur Masuaku, it leaves Reinildo Mandava as the Lads’ only true left-back. That is, barring a Lazarus-esque development from Leo Hjelde or Aji Alese.
Similarly to Xhaka, who I looked at in my prior piece, the Mozambican is the wrong side of 30 and will need rotating to be at his best next season. On the surface, this looks to be the one area of squad planning that has seemingly been neglected since last year’s promotion.
Melker Ellborg seems to be the heir apparent to Roefs. The January additions of Angulo and Ta Bi strengthened our depth on the wings. Should Ghisolfi decide to stop playing hard to get with Geertruida, then we have plenty of options at right-back. I’ve been really impressed with how the recruitment team have been proactive in fleshing out our squad so far.
I’m going to try to do my part for Florent here and discuss some potential options at left-back that could learn from, and cover for, Mandava next year. We’re going to look at this from a numerical point of view, but also try to identify some potential market opportunities if they’re out there.

Chelsea are yet to give up on signing Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Per the transfer expert, the Blues still believe they have a chance despite news breaking that a transfer to Stamford Bridge has fallen through.
Chelsea had sent an £8 million bid, which was immediately rejected, and the West Londoners were reportedly told he would not move.
The FIFA Club World Cup champions need a midfielder of Xhaka's ilk in their engine room to partner Moises Caicedo. His working relationship with Xabi Alonso is also a plus.
Chelsea desperately need a controller and experienced leader to bolster that centre, and Xhaka fits the bill.

In my opinion, he needs to make a statement after the World Cup to try and mend some bridges but a couple of good performances and the majority will forget all about it.
It also goes to show the influence that people like Fabrizio Romano have. If talks with Xhaka have managed to convince him to stay, he was never as desperate for the move as Fab made out.
Just another example of why this type of thing needs to be stopped.

There’s been a lot of vitriol directed at Granit Xhaka over the last few days on Twitter/X. As yet, there has been no official statement from the player, and I’m becoming concerned that the transfer rumours started by various accounts on the platform to unsettle things are working as intended.
I think we have to be careful about deciding at this stage that Xhaka has been duplicitous. The worse the reaction to him personally, the more likely he is to take offence if he hasn’t even done anything. That could prove more damaging to his relationship with the club and supporters than anything else.

Granit Xhaka has provided this club with a platform from which to lift off next season. There is surely no doubt that, without him last season, we would not be planning for the Europa League. This, in itself, gives him enough credit in the bank to deserve, at the very least, the benefit of the doubt. I could be wrong – maybe he’s engineered the whole thing himself. Time will tell.

I think we have to be careful about deciding at this stage that Xhaka has been duplicitous. Sunderland have rejected an £8m offer from Chelsea to sign midfielder Granit Xhaka.
Chelsea have made an approach to sign the 33-year-old, with Xabi Alonso keen to reunite with his former Bayer Leverkusen player in West London.
Xhaka excelled under Alonso’s management in Germany, where he was part of the Leverkusen team that won the Bundesliga ******* le for the first time, unbeaten, in 2023/24. He was named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season in each of his two campaigns working with Alonso.
Xhaka joined Sunderland from Leverkusen last summer for a fee of around £17m and captained the newly-promoted Black Cats to Europa League qualification. The Switzerland international was named Sunderland’s Player of the Season.
