After the false start and the worst start, Michael Carrick ******* ounced it a fresh start. Manchester United have their fewest wins in their opening seven league games of a campaign for 40 years – just the one – and have not tasted victory in six matches in all competitions. Their manager nevertheless emerged from consecutive away games that brought defeat to Atletico Madrid and a draw at Leeds appearing more upbeat about their prospects.
"I understand the situation doesn't look too good if you look at it from a certain way, but I got no doubts that we can go on a good run," he said. That certain way could involve referencing results or the league table; seven games in, the club who finished third last season are already nine points adrift of the top three.
Carrick believes he has detected a good feeling around his squad, whether or not it stems from Lisandro Martinez's public criticism of director of football Jason Wilcox. "I felt like [it was] a bit of a fresh start today and where we're at, and accepting it and doing something about it," he said. Perhaps not doing enough about it, given the result was exactly the same – a 1-1 draw – as in their previous two league games.
Michael Carrick thinks Man United's new-look midfield, including Youri Tielemans (pictured), can lead their rebuild (Reuters)
If there is improvement in Carrick's camp, it has come from a low bar. And, in fairness, the performances in the intimidating atmospheres of the Metropolitano and Elland Road are not among United's four worst this season – Hull, Manchester City, Brighton, Tottenham – but, again, that is scarcely a compliment.

As Florida State prepares to visit Alabama football Saturday to complete the back end of a home-and-home series, its football coach, Mike Norvell, is firmly planted on the hottest seat in the ACC. As it turns out, however, athletics director Michael Alford's seat was even hotter.
The school fired Alford Monday after just four years on the job − he got less time than the most high-profile football coaches and less than Norvell himself. Alford's predecessor, David Coburn, had a four-year run of his own. Prior to that, Stan Wilcox lasted just five years in the role. One departure was a resignation, another a retirement, and the third a firing, but collectively, they represent a lot of administrative upheaval.
MOVING ON: Florida State AD Michael Alford fired after four years
BACK FOR MORE: Does Alabama football want 'revenge' heading into Florida State week?
Alabama has been there. And it doesn't want to go back.

On Tuesday, one of the most popular golf content creators with Texas ties received massive backlash over a now-infamous commercial displaying a woman being shoved to the ground by a man after trying to pull a driver out of a golf bag. The video was yanked after igniting outrage on social media, but more consequences are on the way.
Two days later, Callaway Golf ended its relationship with Frisco-based Good Good Golf amid the ongoing fallout from the influencer brand's controversial ad. Callaway initially reposted the Good Good video on social media before pulling it from its channels. In support of efforts to prevent violence against women, Callaway announced it would donate $1 million to organizations working to prevent violence against women.
"Over the last several days, we have listened and reflected deeply on the hurt and disappointment caused by the video we reposted," read a statement from Callaway Golf on Thursday. "We heard from individuals who shared personal experiences related to violence against women, and their stories were powerful reminders that this issue touches the lives of far too many people. Unequivocally, violence against women is unacceptable and should never be trivialized, normalized, or used as entertainment."
The statement also mentions the immediate severing of their relationship with Good Good, the $1 million donation, and a refocus for their content review and approval processes going forward.

Manchester United's midfield rebuild appears to be entering its decisive phase, with TeamTalk reporting that Carlos Baleba has emerged as the leading target to complete the club's summer business in the centre of the pitch. The Brighton midfielder has been admired internally for some time and, crucially, the pursuit now looks to have moved from long-term appreciation into active negotiation.
According to the report, Jason Wilcox and Michael Carrick have both played major roles in shaping the decision. The key line is clear, United have "now stepped up their pursuit with a new £65million bid, which is the basis of ongoing talks with Brighton". More significantly, "Sources believe a deal is likely to be reached at around £70million." If that figure is finalised, Baleba would become the most expensive of United's three midfield additions.
United's interest in Baleba is not a late-market reaction. It is understood Wilcox has tracked the player over a lengthy period and was involved when United first made an approach last summer. Brighton's earlier valuation, "around £100million", was viewed as excessive, yet the admiration never disappeared. That persistence says plenty about how strongly the player is rated within the club's football structure.
The appeal goes beyond technical ability. TeamTalk states that "United carried out extensive work on Baleba both on and off the pitch and became convinced that he was an excellent fit for the Manchester United project." That kind of language is often revealing in recruitment stories. It suggests this is not simply about athleticism, ball-winning or profile fit, but about character, adaptability and resilience.
There is another telling detail in the report, "United were also impressed by his demeanour and personality away from the pitch, with the reports fed back to Wilcox and the wider recruitment team described as glowing." For a club trying to modernise its decision-making and avoid expensive mistakes, those elements matter. TeamTalk adds that this "only strengthened Wilcox's belief that Baleba had the mentality required to succeed at Old Trafford."

Sam Burns simply couldn't keep up with Scottie Scheffler in the final group on Sunday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
Scheffler stormed to victory at TPC Southwind, finishing on 17-under par after shooting a final-round 66.
The 30-year-old won the tournament by eight strokes, and finished nine clear of his good friend Burns.

AXTI surged on optical sector momentum and 165% YoY revenue growth; TE jumped 10% as new US solar tariffs protect its domestic manufacturing plans.
BW landed a 20-turbine Siemens data center deal and drew a 7.66M share Ameriprise disclosure, but still trades like a turnaround on a weak chart.
Act now: the ****** yst who called NVIDIA in 2010 just named his top 10 AI stocks — and Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises didn't make the cut. Grab the names FREE today.
Three second-derivative AI plays are in focus Friday morning. AXT (NASDAQ:AXTI) is trading higher alongside a broad rally in optics names, T1 Energy (NYSE:TE) is bouncing on the domestic solar policy trade, and Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises (NYSE:BW) is drawing attention around a fresh institutional disclosure. The connective tissue: AI capex is now pulling in materials, power gear, and energy suppliers well beyond the obvious chip names.
AXT is up about 3.1% today, around $79.83, after an Aug. 13 close of $77.45. The catalyst is a sector move. Applied Optoelectronics is up about 5%, Lumentum about 4%, and Corning about 4.5%. AXT makes compound semiconductor substrates, and its indium phosphide wafers are a key input for the high-speed optical transceivers and silicon photonics used in AI data centers. When the optical connectivity trade runs, AXT runs with it as the upstream materials supplier.

Leicester City manager Russell Martin admits he would tell Manchester United director of football Jason Wilcox "to go away" if he attempted to recruit teenage sensation Louis Page.
The 18-year-old earned EFL Apprentice of the Year honors last season and is regarded as one of the most promising young talents in the Football League - drawing interest from the Red Devils.
Page would purportedly welcome a transfer to Old Trafford if the chance presented itself, but Leicester are intent on retaining their homegrown talent. The England U20 international has already accumulated 21 senior appearances for the Foxes - including five starts last season. He featured in their Carabao Cup victory over Northampton on Saturday.

Today in Boston Celtics history, the team officially signed All-Star veteran forward Gordon Hayward from the Utah Jazz in free agency, following a dispute that went down on the Fourth of July holiday regarding his departure from the Jazz after conflicting reports clouded the picture. The Butler alum's contract, which spanned four years and was valued at $128 million with a player option for the final year, started under gruesome circumstances that required several seasons for Hayward to overcome.
A devastating injury to his ankle ended Hayward’s first season with Boston just a few minutes into the 2018-19 NBA season. The Indiana native worked diligently over the next two seasons to get back to his old self and abilities. Unfortunately, by the time he had mostly recovered his game, it was on a team that needed him in less of a starring and more of a supporting role. As a result, Hayward decided to decamp to the Charlotte Hornets in the 2020 offseason.
He averaged 13.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.6 **** ists per game with the Celtics over three seasons.
It is also the anniversary of former Celtic big man Chris Wilcox signing with the team in 2012. Wilcox, a former Maryland standout, had last played for the Detroit Pistons before signing on to reinforce Boston’s aging frontcourt in the latter days of the Banner 17 crew. He played 89 games over two seasons with the franchise. The Raleigh, North Carolina, native averaged 4.6 points and 3.3 boards in his time in green and white.
A pivotal moment in Celtics history came in 1978. Legendary team president Red Auerbach decided to turn down an offer from the New York Knicks, after the Celtics’ new owner, John Y. Brown, had made a mess of his roster by making trades without consulting Auerbach.

Manchester United have completed the £48m signing of Brazil international Andrey Santos from Chelsea and are in advanced talks to sign Aston Villa's Youri Tielemans as they try to revamp their midfield.
It has also been confirmed United's plan to sign Ederson from Atalanta for £35m has been scrapped for now after a medical highlighted an injury-related issue.
United agreed a fee with Chelsea for Santos last week, and the 22-year-old has now completed his medical and signed a deal to June 2031, with the option to extend for a further year.
"Andrey is an outstanding midfielder with excellent technical qualities and the ability to impact the game at both ends of the pitch," said director of football Jason Wilcox.
"He was a key target for us in an important position.

With the off day tomorrow, the Mariners are using today as an opportunity to get a few dinged-up players some back-to-back days of rest: Dominic Canzone (hamstring) and Luke Raley (elbow) are both out of the lineup, and Canzone, at least, won’t be available off the bench. Randy Arozarena is also getting a breather. Not getting a breather: Cole Young, who continues to be the Mariners’ iron man.
Lineups:
Cool lineup graphic, at-Angels. Former Mariner Donovan Walton deserves better (in many senses).
Roster move:
RHP Cole Wilcox is up in place of LHP Josh Simpson; read more here.

The Mariners attempted to prop up their flagging bullpen today, trading out lefty Josh Simpson for righty Cole Wilcox.
With the Mariners past the Oops! All Lefties Guardians lineup, there’s no need for an extra lefty in the ‘pen, but Simpson didn’t make a strong argument to stay, providing the bottom bread in the disaster sandwich that was the Mariners’ meltdown eighth inning in one of the most unpleasant games I’ve recapped yet this season. For Simpson, the issue remains command. Wilcox hasn’t been the picture of pinpoint command – or he has, if that picture was drawn by someone who’d consumed ten double espressos while riding a Gravitron – but the thing Wilcox does bring is an ability to work multiple innings, something that’s useful for the bullpen-impoverished Mariners, down a man due to the fluctuating piggyback strategy.
Wilcox is carrying a rough-looking ERA of over five in Triple-A, but his peripherals are good: his FIP and xERA are both about half that, and he’s striking out over a third of batters faced while keeping his walks in check. It’s the walks that were the pain point for Wilcox in his first go-round with the big-league club in April, when he flashed solid strikeout stuff but also walked almost as many hitters as he struck out. That issue has calmed down significantly in his time at the notoriously hitter-friendly PCL, where he’s also collected a pair of saves.
Wilcox was my Pile Pick this spring training but his command issues caused Alex Hoppe to leapfrog him in the pecking order. Hoppe had his own struggles, however, and was optioned down to Triple-A three days ago. With Hoppe ineligible to be recalled from Triple-A for at least another week, Wilcox has some runway for another audition to the big-league club as they continue to search for consistency in the bullpen. And as a fun bonus, Wilcox has brought along a good luck charm this time that he keeps in his locker: a bobblehead of former Georgia teammate Emerson Hancock given away at Foley Field this May – a reminder from one Bulldog to another that the path to a big-league career doesn’t always run smoothly.

Manchester United 's long-running negotiations for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes ultimately proved fruitless.
While United remained firm on their stance of not overpaying, Tottenham Hotspur agreed to meet West Ham's £85 million valuation . Fernandes has also accepted their more lucrative contract offer.
However, Jason Wilcox and company may return to east London to discuss the possibility of signing another West Ham United star.
According to Sky Sports , Crysencio Summerville is emerging as a leading left-wing target for Manchester United.
It is understood that United continue to prioritise the midfield, but Summerville is also firmly on their radar.

The Minnesota Vikings have already traded outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard this offseason to the Philadelphia Eagles , and if the club ships one more notable player elsewhere, it might just be quarterback J.J. McCarthy , according to Fansided.
That website identified every team's most tradeable player this week, and McCarthy got the nod for Minnesota .
Wynston Wilcox: McCarthy is Vikings' Main Trade Commodity
On a list of big names and prominent bench players, McCarthy drew Wilcox's attention for the Vikings, and he wrote about a trade possibility : "J.J. McCarthy is going to be the most talked about backup quarterback aside from Ty Simpson at this point."
"McCarthy's days are numbered in Minnesota. The Vikings even thinking about pursuing Anthony Richardson could very well be the end of McCarthy in the Twin Cities. It's not a matter of if McCarthy will get traded, it's when. Depending on how he plays this offseason, he'll either get dealt before Week 1 or closer to the deadline. Should McCarthy be traded ? Yes."

Atalanta star Ederson has provided a huge update on his move to Manchester United.
Earlier this month, a report covered by The Peoples Person confirmed that United had reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign Ederson for an initial €40.5m (£35m).
Heading into the summer window, United’s top priority was bolstering the midfield and they have made a real statement of intent by quickly wrapping up a deal for Ederson, whose Atalanta contract expires in 2027.
Ederson was identified by Michael Carrick and director of football Jason Wilcox to replace Casemiro, whose time at Old Trafford has come to an end after the expiry of his contract. United also have an agreement in place with Ederson over personal terms.
The deal could eventually be worth up to €45m (£38.8m).

Manchester United are accelerating their pursuit of Mateus Fernandes, despite West Ham United hiking the price for their midfield maestro, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Red Devils are prioritising a major revamp in midfield this summer, with the bulk of the budget set to be directed towards fixing Michael Carrick’s engine room. Given Casemiro‘s departure already confirmed, and Manuel Ugarte looking likely to join the Brazilian, at least two – potentially three if the 25-year-old Uruguayan is sold – new signings are expected to arrive at Old Trafford.
A £39 million deal for Atalanta dynamo Ederson has already been agreed, though a late call-up to the World Cup squad for Brazil has potentially delayed plans to finalise the move. The 26-year-old is an all-action enforcer, capable of playing in a variety of roles and systems, who received the seal of approval from Carrick in meetings with the recruitment team, headed by sporting director Jason Wilcox.
Fernandes – West Ham’s 21-year-old breakout star – is next on the agenda for United, though a host of top clubs are also hot on his trail after a superb campaign.
This includes Champions League finalists ****** nal and Paris Saint-Germain, with Real Madrid another suitor. Incoming manager Jose Mourinho is said to be impressed as the ‘Special One’ wants young and hungry players to help him turn things around at the Bernabeu.

From Yeboahs shirt to scoring at 16
James Milner was just 16 and earning £70 a week as a YTS player when he broke into the first team at Leeds, six months after taking his GCSE exams.
On 10 November 2002, his dad Peter was in the away end at Upton Park when boss Terry Venables sent the youngster on for Jason Wilcox, now director of football at Manchester United, in the final minutes of a 4-3 win against West Ham.
It was a dream come true for Milner, who had grown up supporting the club and wore shirts with the names of Tony Yeboah and Tony Dorigo on the back.
Six weeks after the West Ham game, Milner - aged 16 years and 356 days - became the youngest Premier League goalscorer at that time when he scored in a 2-1 win against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
It was not enough to get the former Leeds season ticket-holder out of his post-match duties, however.

We just covered the From Fired Researcher to $13.7 Billion King: How Leopold Aschenbrenner Broke the Hedge Fund World and Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE:BW) ranks 25th on this list.
Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE:BW) first appeared in the 13F portfolio of Situational Awareness LP in the fourth quarter of 2025. Back then, this stake comprised a little over 1.3 million shares. Filings for the first quarter of 2026 show that the fund has made no changes to this stake. The company provides energy and emissions control solutions to industrial, electrical utility, municipal, and other customers in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Leopold Aschenbrenner is bullish on the stock. Under the hood, the firm is pivoting from a legacy industrial boiler company into a high-margin, grid-infrastructure, and clean-energy powerhouse directly capturing the AI data center boom.
Bulls emphasize that the macro tailwinds for utility and industrial power generation are converting directly into rapid top-line scaling for Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE:BW), far exceeding Wall Street projections. Total revenue for Q1 2026 reached $214.4 million, jumping 44% year-over-year compared to $148.6 million in Q1 2025. The $214.4 million performance blew past the average consensus ******* yst forecast of $157.2 million by more than 36%. This beat was driven by high project volumes, including their Base Electron project, and accelerating global utility demand to feed power-hungry AI workloads. The Adjusted EBITDA for Q1 2026 surged to $16.1 million, a 296% increase from the $4 million reported in Q1 2025.
While we acknowledge the potential of BW as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk. If you're looking for an extremely undervalued AI stock that also stands to benefit significantly from Trump-era tariffs and the onshoring trend, see our free report on the best short-term AI stock.

‘The Fall of Icarus’: How the remarkable shot was captured
Standing in Arizona’s largest dry lakebed, Wilcox Playa, astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy steadied himself as freight trains thundered by, threatening to blur the shot that took months to prepare. The crowd around McCarthy watched one morning last month in tense silence as he attempted and failed during six passes of a plane overhead to get the perfect image.
High above, his friend Gabriel C. Brown was perched on the edge of his plane seat, waiting for the signal to leap. “Originally, we we’re like, if we mess up the first attempt
