Two Visalia youth baseball teams made history over the weekend.
On Saturday, July 18, the Visalia Blues 11U baseball team defeated Tulare in a 4-3 nailbiter before taking down Elk Grove in the Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament finale.
On the same day, the Blues 12U squad defeated Hilo Black of Hawaii to claim their respective regional championship.
And now, both the Visalia Blues 11U and 12U baseball teams will be heading to the 2026 Cal Ripken World Series.

Renewable energy developer Avantus said its Aratina 1 solar-plus-storage project has entered commercial operation in California. The 200-MW/500-MWh installation in Kern County has long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Central Coast Community Energy (3CE) and Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE), a pair of community choice aggregators.Avantus on July 20 said the company will have a controlling stake in Aratina 1 and will operate the facility. CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela confirmed on Tuesday that three people died of infections of hantavirus, but stressed there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission in the South American country, which has rarely reported cases of the rodent-borne disease in humans.
The Health Ministry said hantavirus was also suspected in the deaths of two health workers in the southwestern state of Barinas. Those cases remain under investigation and were not linked to the three fatalities in the eastern state of Anzoátegui, about 655 kilometers (407 miles) away.
Both states were spared the worst of the back-to-back major earthquakes that hit northern Venezuela earlier this month.
The ministry described the deaths in Anzoátegui and Barinas as isolated incidents that "do not represent a risk to the general community." But it added that health workers would be sent to the affected states to "guarantee the health security of all Venezuelans," without elaborating.
The Venezuelan Medical Federation, a national professional group, said the deaths in Anzoátegui were from the same family in the rural municipality of Miranda in the south of the state.

Tulsa National Little League has been disqualified from the Little League Softball Southwest Region Tournament, Little League International officials confirmed.
The Little League International Tournament Committee determined that the adult volunteers and parents did not provide "sufficient documentation to verify that all players were eligible to participate in the International Tournament based on either their school enrollment or bona fide habitation within the league's official boundaries," a statement released on Tuesday, July 21, said.
As a result, the committee removed the team from the Southwest Region Tournament and declared Tulsa National's previous game a forfeit. The Southwest Region Tournament will conclude with a one-game championship between Texas West (Helotes Little League) and Louisiana (Eastbank Little League) at 4:30 p.m. on July 21 in Waco, Texas.
The league requires all participating athletes to either reside within the league's boundaries through bona fide habitation or attend a school located within those boundaries. According to the statement, the tournament committee works closely with local leagues to verify eligibility documentation and to review any challenges or protests brought to their attention throughout the tournament.
Both finalist teams, in addition to Texas Easy Industrial, filed complaints against Tulsa National regarding eligibility rules.

LIMA, Peru (AP) — A 5.5 magnitude earthquake shook the Andes region of Peru, killing at least six people, injuring more than 30 and displacing 300, authorities said Sunday.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake struck on Saturday at 9:24 p.m., with its epicenter located 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) west-southwest of the city of Sicaya in Huancayo province. It was 10 kilometers (6.21 miles) deep.
Peru's National Civil Defense Institute said in a statement the total number of missing is still unknown. Several buildings collapsed or suffered structural damage, including the historic "Santiago de León" church and former convent in Chongos Bajo, which was built in 1565 and designated as national heritage site for being a 16th century "architectural gem."
Luis Vásquez, head of the local civil defense office, told journalists that the use of rustic adobe materials in construction in that Andean area "has contributed to the greater impact and damage."
Earthquakes are frequent in Peru, which is located in the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire."

The cause of death of an American woman found dead in a scenic Irish town earlier this week has been revealed, according to a report.
Jamey Carney, 43, a New York native who moved to Ireland in 2021, died from suffocation after suffering head injuries, according to a report by The Irish Times, which cited the Irish state pathologist Dr. Linda Mulligan.
Initial reports suggested she had been beaten to death, but the newspaper reported the post-mortem found that suffocation — not her head injuries — caused her death. Police are investigating her death as a murder.

Wells was last seen on Mississippi's Horn Island during a holiday boating trip with friends. Crump previously confirmed to NBC News that Christine had reported her son missing that night when he didn't return with the others in his group. A two-day search culminated in a park ranger finding Wells' body ashore on the island. A cause of death is yet to be determined, but Crump has said that the Wonsleys don't accept that their son could have drowned accidentally and are launching an independent investigation into what happened. Both Christine and Elmore explained on "GMA" that they don't understand why Wells would have chosen to stay on the island without his friends. "We always taught him that if you go with a group, you stay with a group," Elmore said. "If you go with five, you come back with five. Do not separate from the group. Because I always said, 'Safety is in numbers.' So he knew to stay with this group, so why would he split from the group? I don't know." It started like any other Sunday in a quiet South Florida neighborhood. Early risers were making coffee, neighbors waved as they picked up the paper, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. But then, the calm was shattered. What sounded like fireworks erupted in the pre-dawn hours — quickly followed by the unmistakable roar (and then crash) of a high-end SUV slamming into a house just up the street.
The scene that greeted police and residents was nothing short of shocking. A Lamborghini, battered and smoking, sat wedged against the front of someone's home. Neighbors emerged in robes, clutching cell phones, their faces lit by flashing patrol lights and the blue glow of police tape being strung across the street. But it was more than just an expensive wreck. The police say the SUV's occupants had been caught in a hail of gunfire before the vehicle ever left the road. The morning's peace was gone, replaced by questions and chaos.
According to the Miramar Police Department and local reporting from WSVN 7News, three people inside the luxury SUV had been shot before the vehicle slammed into a home along Southwest 27th Street. One of the victims, 21-year-old Brianna Johnson, later died from her injuries.
Investigators now believe the shooting happened moments before the crash, and they're working to identify the people responsible.
Investigators say the violence began around 5:30 a.m. Sunday along Sunshine Boulevard.

Seven San Francisco 49ers found spots on ESPN's newly unveiled "Domestic Cup of American Football," an exercise from ***** yst Bill Barnwell inspired by the World Cup that splits the NFL into eight regional squads based on where players attended high school.
The idea, detailed on ESPN.com, borrows its premise from a rugby tradition overseas. Barnwell built 30-man rosters for California, Texas and Florida as standalone teams, plus five additional regional groupings, then applied rules on injuries, retirements and positional needs to keep things realistic for a hypothetical September tournament.
The 49ers' footprint spans three of those teams. On the California roster, linebacker Fred Warner and cornerback Deommodore Lenoir both made the cut. The Southwest team landed the 49ers' backfield tandem, with quarterback Brock Purdy and running back Christian McCaffrey both suiting up.
Edge rusher Nick Bosa represents San Francisco on the Florida roster, joining an edge-rushing group Barnwell called the state's deepest position group in the entire tournament. Left tackle Trent Williams and wide receiver Mike Evans both landed on Texas, with Evans slotting in as the fourth receiver behind Jaxon Smith-Njigba, CeeDee Lamb and Garrett Wilson, and Williams anchoring the tackle spot alongside Eagles star Lane Johnson.
Kittle was the notable 49er left off any roster, a byproduct of Barnwell's rule tying eligibility to players expected to be healthy for a September start. Kittle is still working back from the torn Achilles that ended his 2025 season.

Jul. 5—BYRON — The list of college commits on the Byron High School football team keeps growing.
Rising senior safety and receiver Beau Nicklay is one of the latest Bears' players to share his verbal commitment to Division II University of Minnesota-Duluth on social media on June 30.
As a junior, Nicklay recorded 32 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and one interception returned for a touchdown. On offense, he had 120 yards and two touchdowns on five catches. He also averaged 14.83 yards on 18 punt returns.
The 5-foot-11, 187-pound Nicklay received four offers from Division II programs: UMD, University of Sioux Falls, Southwest Minnesota State University and Wayne State University in Detroit.
He was deciding between UMD and Sioux Falls, but the path to his decision ultimately began with Byron's annual trips to Duluth for team football camps.

Conference realignment has turned college athletics into a much more national endeavor than it ever was previously. The Big Ten stretches from southern California to New Jersey. The ACC includes a pair of teams on the Pacific coast. And the Big 12 has members located in both the deserts of the southwest and the mountains of Appalachia. The end result is something almost entirely unrecognizable from college sports just a decade ago.
Most fans would agree that it would behoove college sports to return to some semblance of regionality, where schools in neighboring states play each other more often than schools on opposite coasts. Whether such a return is in the cards isn't exactly clear, but it's something that NCAA president Charlie Baker would welcome. During an appearance on Face The Nation this weekend, Baker outlined that he sensed a willingness among schools to embrace a more regional approach for non-football sports.
When asked if he felt conference realignment was nearing its end, Baker first suggested that the expiration of TV contracts ultimately will determine future shifts, but then pivoted to change he sees on the horizon with regard to non-football sports.
"The real question there is when does everybody's TV contracts come up, and what will that mean with respect to how they get negotiated at that point in time? Because everybody's obviously living with the terms and conditions ****** ociated with those," Baker said.
"I will say this. Most of the conversation I've heard among schools, at least at the Division I level, is whether they should try and figure out some way to create a more regional approach to sports other than football. Because football is, depending upon the conference, the league, and the program, somewhere between 11 and 14 games in a season, whereas you have many other sports, men's and women's sports, where you play, literally, 30, 40, 50, 60 games. And I think the conversation people have started to have is whether or not there's a way to think a little differently about how to schedule the football stuff than the way you schedule some of the other sports. Football's once a week, right? And it's usually over a weekend. A lot of these other sports, you're playing midweek, you're playing the weekends, and those sports, the travel question becomes a much bigger challenge and a bigger issue than it is for just football."

PARIS, July 5 - The third stage of the Tour de France that will take place on Monday will be closed to the public due to ‌risks posed by a forest fire raging in southwestern France, officials said on Sunday.
The fire has ‌ravaged more than 1,600 hectares (6.18 square miles) some 60 km (37 miles) from the finish line in Les Angles and is still spreading.
Images of the fire show billowing black smoke, with eyewitnesses reporting scorching winds, hot ground, difficulty breathing in the vicinity and poor visibility beyond 2 metres (6.56 feet).
The race route will remain unchanged, but the Tour's publicity caravan will not drive along the last 40 km into France from Spain where it began on Saturday.

That's important since airline stocks have been squeezed by two competing pressures in 2026. Unpredictable fuel prices have offset strong travel demand.
Now Bank of America believes the setting appears better than feared.
BofA upped price targets for the airline group in a July 1 research report reviewed by TheStreet, suggesting steady demand, stronger fares and reduced fuel costs may support greater profitability into second-quarter results.
The brokerage boosted its price target for Delta to $100 from $93 and for United Airlines Holdings (UAL) to $150 from $145. It also boosted objectives on American Airlines Group, Southwest Airlines, Alaska Air Group, JetBlue Airways, Frontier Group Holdings and Allegiant Travel.

PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) — A wildfire burning southwest of Denver has forced the evacuation of thousands of residents and destroyed more than 160 structures by Friday as erratic winds pushed the blaze across two Colorado counties.
The Aspen Acres fire is one of about 40 uncontained large blazes burning mostly in the West, fueled by months of dry weather and a record lack of snow this past winter in some places.
Fire personnel were scooping water from the Pueblo Reservoir to fight Aspen Acres fire, which expanded overnight by 17 square miles (44 square kilometers) which brought it up to nearly 105 square miles (272 square kilometers) by Friday with zero containment.
All of Colorado City, an unincorporated community of about 2,200, was ordered evacuated as well as the towns of Beulah, Rye and San Isabel, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office.
About 50 National Guard soldiers were being sent in Friday to help with staffing checkpoints on roads in Custer and Pueblo counties.
