Labor Day weekend indicates many things; the kids go back to school, the NFL starts up, and suddenly it's in the 60s in the morning on the east coast after weeks of heat and humidity.
In the pickleball world, Labor Day weekend also now signifies two major shifts on the Pro calendar: the end of the Major League Pickleball season and the start of the Professional Pickleball ****** ociation season. It took a couple years of schedule manipulation, but once MLP and PPA joined forces under the UPA umbrella, they've endeavored to define "seasons" for each entity, and the PPA starts its 2026-27 season right now with a Grand Slam event in Cary, North Carolina.
(Note: I will be onsite in North Carolina this coming Wednesday; if you're reading this and will also be there then I look forward to meeting and catching up).

My eleven-year-old is still trying to learn the Dougie. Over a decade since it entered the cultural bloodstream, and it is still moving through generations like a living thing. I grew up on the Running Man, the Kid-n-Play kick step, the Wop. These were not just moves. They were rituals, practiced on living-room floors, performed at local parties. And yet, in most cases, I had no idea who originated them. I knew the artists who introduced them to the zeitgeist. Still, the actual creators, the people whose bodies birthed the movement, had essentially vanished from the record. That gap, between cultural impact and cultural credit, is precisely what Connor Lim is trying to close. So, we brought him onto the latest episode of the FROM THE CULTURE podcast to better understand how.
Lim is the co-founder and CEO of the International Dance League, the world's first global professional dance league. Six city-based teams, a regular season, a championship, and, as of this past summer, a global media rights deal with ESPN. IDL grew out of STEEZY, an online dance education platform he built after a childhood in Queens, completely consumed by the craft. For most people, dance is considered an art form, but Lim sees it as that and much more: a sport. Consider the battle traditions of breaking, krumping, and voguing, and Lim's perspective no longer feels like much of a stretch. In fact, breakdancing made its Olympic debut at the Paris 2024 Games as an official event, a testament to dance's competitive nature. It's this thesis that fuels Lim's ambition for the IDL to make dance as big of a sport as basketball, football, or baseball. However, unlike athletes, dancers have never sat inside a structure that captures the value they generate.

This is a double-edged sword because, even as an art, dance misses out on this value capture. Music has royalties, touring, and publishing rights. These are all mechanisms by which value accrues back to the creator, so an ecosystem forms, and the people who make it are remembered and rewarded. Dance, for all its cultural reach and resonance, has no such machinery. So, knowing the originator served no structural purpose, and the credit simply evaporated. Lim put it plainly: people act as they are incentivized to act, so he's built the IDL on a system of incentives.
The late Charlie Munger, longtime vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, famously stated, "Show me the incentive, and I will show you the outcome," emphasizing that an organization's operational reality and culture are direct reflections of its underlying incentive system. This week I want you to consider using two hands on certain shots you normally hit with one.
I have never covered this skill, and it is about time. Many of the pros are using two hands on various shots, and this is an important one. You can use the two-hander at the NVZ or in the transition zone. Two-handers will provide you with more power, will incorporate your core, and will prevent injuries using one hand only.
We worked on this in my advanced drill class on Tuesday, and there were some dramatic improvements!

Jack Munro & Roos van Reek teamed up to win Mixed Open in Birmingham.
The largest indoor pickleball event held anywhere in the world was held last weekend, with 3,400+ players descending into Birmingham, England for the 2026 English Open, powered by the ****** ociation of Pickleball Players (APP) and continuing a multi-year relationship between the US-based tour and the biggest European organization out there.
Let's do a quick recap of the results, highlighting the winners, the upsets, and the top International players who made waves. The event featured a slew of pros from the US, joined by some of Europe's top players and even some visitors from the East.
Ignasi De Rueda, who plays out of Barcelona and is one of the top Spanish players who plays primarily out of the continent survived the massive draw to take gold. In the final, he topped APP Next player Jake Bower. Bower had taken out top APP player Livornese in the quarters and Poland star Mateusz Matysik to earn his finals spot. Meanwhile, De rueda crushed another APP Next star Jayden Broderick in the semis before a tight 11-9 third game win for the ****** le.
In a great display of the spread of the game, the semis of the Women's draw featured players from Spain, Croatia, Netherlands, and the USA. Of course, the Croatian actually plays in the States, while the Dutch player primarily plays in Australia, so you just can never tell. Dutch star Roos van Reek topped APP next star Brooke Revuelta in one semi, while Croatian-born Domenika Turkovic (currently No. 4 on the APP tour) made fast work of Barcelona-based in the other. In the final, Turkovic outlasted van Reek for the ****** le.

Charlotte Hornets star Brandon Miller is bringing athletes and celebrities together for a new fundraiser benefiting his Team Miller Foundation.
The inaugural Celebrity Pickleball Classic will take place Aug. 22 at Rally in Charlotte's South End, with Hornets guards Coby White and Kon Knueppel among the expected participants.

The 48-year-old's favorite way to keep fit, as per Women's Health, is through a combination of Pilates, weightlifting, lengthy walks and tennis sessions. George previously revealed that Amal was a competitive player on the tennis court, and often bested him when they faced each other.
"Amal is a really good athlete. When I was younger, I won some tennis tournaments. I played a lot of sports – I still play a lot of sports, and I can actually play [well]. And Amal just beats the **** out of me," George told People.

EXETER — Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Hampshire and Vermont will host its 6th annual Pickleball Tournament on July 11–12 at the Exeter Town Recreation Park in Exeter.
With more than 150 players expected from across the state and beyond, this tournament has become one of New Hampshire's premier pickleball events. Proceeds will directly support the group's statewide one-to-one mentoring programs, which provide consistent guidance and positive adult role models to help local youth thrive.

Rehabbing Green Bay Packers star Micah Parsons was back to competition, although it was on the pickleball court, paired with quarterback Jordan Love at "The Elite Week," inviting top NFL players to a series of offseason training competitions designed to raise money for charity.
The duo won the pickleball tournament and also gave themselves microphones for a light-hearted social-media video while competing at Chicken N Pickle in Glendale, Arizona.
"They made it competitive, but at the end, this duo, we just don't lose," Parsons told the camera.
Packers fans, of course, might raise an eyebrow, knowing Parsons is still unlikely to begin the season as he recovers from his ACL tear in late December.

Chris Haworth tried to make it as a tennis player and couldn't. He gave the pro tour about a year and a half, traveled, lost more than he won, and went home to Oklahoma City to coach.
He figured that was that.
Then a client he was teaching got into pickleball and kept after him to try it. He finally did, in 2022. "I kind of got hooked that first time," Haworth said, "and then it slowly grew and grew and grew."
A few years later he had climbed to Professional Pickleball ****** ociation's No. 1 in men's singles.
He's also the most prominent openly gay man in a sport still deciding who its faces are. His husband, Jackie, travels to tournaments and knows half the tour.

St. Louis' Hayden Patriquin keeps on rolling, as does his team.
Major League Pickleball (MLP), presented by DoorDash, headed to St. Petersburg, Florida last weekend for the fifth week of the 2026 MLP season. They head back inside to play at the fabulous new St. Pete Athletic Club, the home club of Florida Smash owners Travis Rettenmaier & Graham D’Amico that was opened to great fanfare earlier this year.
The St. Pete event featured six of the top seven ranked teams in action, with eight playoff position teams competing. This was easily the most competitive event the league has held thus far, as evidenced by the large number of great, competitive matches from the get-go, as well as four different teams being picked to win it all in our media pick’em contest (more on that down below).

For the third year in a row, the Ohio State football program held a fun Olympics competition between the players and the staff, and it went down to the end as they almost always do.
After several competitions that involved three-point shooting, pickleball, and other sports, the staff and players were tied at 4-4 heading into a soccer penalty-kicking contest that would determine the winner of the 2026 June Olympics. We're quite sure that head coach Ryan Day lured former All-American linebacker James Laurinaitis to Columbus for his coaching ability, but it might have swung the balance in this annual event, because he came up huge to give the staff a 5-4 overall victory.
So, how did the "little animal" do it? According to video shared to the Ohio State Football X account, it appears as though Laurinaitis made several key saves as the staff's goalkeeper to deny the players a chance at taking home the ******* le.
While it looks like quarterback Julian Sayin had the players pumped up with a stirring speech, it was no match for the athleticism and competitive drive of Laurinaitis. With the victory, the staff now enjoys a 2-1 all-time record in June Olympics vs. the players.
