Borussia Dortmund entertain neighbors Paderborn on matchday 3. The hosts extended their perfect league start to the Bundesliga season with a narrow win over Villarreal in the Champions League. Meanwhile, Paderborn are yet to score on their return to the top-flight league.
Konstantinos Karetsas was discharged from the hospital after Tuesday's incident, but this game came too early for him. Ethan Nwaneri gets his first start in Niko Kovac's midfield for the Westphalian affair. Nico Schlotterbeck is also back in the lineup for the very first time.
Paderborn's striker Steffen Tigges starts on the bench in his return to his former club Dortmund. At the other end, goalkeeper Nahuel Noll hopes to continue his brilliant start to the campaign.
Here are the lineups as Borussia Dortmund aim to continue their perfect Bundesliga start.
BVB: Kobel; Gadou, Anton, Schlotterbeck ©; Ryerson, Veerman, Bellingham, Svensson; Nwaneri; Guirassy, Fabio Silva

Nico Schlotterbeck and Ramy Bensebaini have resumed team training after their injuries and are available for the match against Paderborn. "They are fit, healthy, and ready to play this weekend. I can count on both of them," said Kovac.
Konstantinos Karetsas will not be involved after having to be substituted in the match against FC Villarreal due to circulatory problems. Sporting director Ole Book had said of him: "He is doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances. Further tests are being carried out, and we want to get to the bottom of it very thoroughly."
Also unavailable are Emre Can (torn ACL), Filippo Mane (muscle injury), Giannis Konstantelias (torn ACL), and Samuele Inacio (suspension following a red card).
Kovac also had words of praise for new signing Ethan Nwaneri, who came on as a substitute last weekend against Hoffenheim and on Tuesday against Villarreal. "He has settled in superbly. He's a great lad, very calm, down-to-earth, friendly, helpful, and a very good footballer," said Kovac. "In those two brief appearances, he showed that he can help us. I'm very satisfied with him." Borussia Dortmund "remain keen" on the prospect of bringing Jadon Sancho back to the club, according to a report from TEAMtalk.
The 26-year-old is still searching for a new club after leaving Manchester United and is free to join any team he wants despite the transfer window being closed, as he is currently a free agent.
Although Dortmund responded to Giannis Konstantelias' long-term injury by bringing in Ethan Nwaneri on loan from ******* nal on deadline day, the German club are still considering a move to bring Sancho back, if the report is to be believed.
It's also claimed that Sancho is in talks with at least two Premier League clubs, who have made fresh approaches for the England international in recent days.
Clubs from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the UAE are reportedly also monitoring Sancho's situation.

It was recently reported that **** nal have an option to recall Ethan Nwaneri from his loan spell at Borussia Dortmund during the January transfer window.
However, local outlet Ruhr Nachrichten has now provided further clarity on the situation and revealed two key details of the agreement.
According to the German publication, **** nal are contractually unable to activate the recall clause at short notice during the transfer window and must "announce the recall well in advance".
While there is no specific deadline, the London club must make their intentions clear "well before the start of the transfer window".
Another important detail is that, should **** nal choose to exercise their recall option, the loan fee would be reduced to zero. In addition, the Gunners would have to cover the full salary of the England U21 international.

On Saturday, too, well over 10,000 Black-and-Yellows made the trip to Sinsheim. Anyone unfamiliar with the situation might have thought the Swedish national team was playing there, with large sections of the stands mixed in yellow and blue. "It felt like there were more BVB fans in the stadium than Hoffenheim fans," said managing director Lars Ricken with a wink.
But TSG Hoffenheim initially set the tone and deservedly took a 2-0 lead shortly after halftime. BVB responded after an hour, first leveling the score within five minutes through goals from Serhou Guirassy and Fabio Silva. Then, in the 86th minute, a deflected cross from Ethan Nwaneri led to an own goal and a 3-2 win for BVB.
Once again, late BVB goals in Sinsheim!
In September 2023, BVB went into halftime with a 2-1 lead, but after 70 minutes lost Ramy Bensebaini to a second yellow card. Down to ten men, the team defended its narrow advantage. In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Julian Ryerson went on a solo run from deep inside his own half and capped it off with the goal for the final 3-1 scoreline.
A season later, in April 2025, the Black-and-Yellows were leading 2-1 after the 90 minutes had elapsed. But then Pavel Kaderabek made it 2-2. In the battle for Champions League qualification, two important points now seemed lost. Waldemar Anton refused to let them go. In the fifth minute of stoppage time, he fired his team to a 3-2 away win.

After joining Borussia Dortmund on loan from ***** nal on deadline day, Ethan Nwaneri came off the bench to make his debut for the German club on Saturday.
The 19-year-old played a vital role in Dortmund's 3-2 comeback win over Hoffenheim, with his cross ultimately leading to Albion Hajdari putting the ball into his own net for BVB's third goal. Nwaneri subsequently received praise from head coach Niko Kovac.
"I liked what I saw," Kovac said of Nwaneri, according to AFP.
"That's what we brought him in for... Maybe it wasn't officially his goal, but he created it."
Germany legend Dietmar Hamann also spoke highly of Nwaneri, whom he sees as a promising addition to the BVB squad.

#borussia #saturday

Borussia Dortmund did it the hard way today in only their second match of the season. Away to Hoffenheim, the Black and Yellows went two goals behind, leaving it all to do with thirty minutes to play. Waldemar Anton took charge, sporting the captain's armband, blasting through the Hoffenheim defense at a lax moment to nick a loose ball and square it for Serhou Guirassy, who got the comeback started. BVB would find two further goals from Fabio Silva, and an own goal created by some intelligent interplay between Silva and Nwaneri.
The defense today was… not exactly sterling. The injury to Mane unsettled the back line, and despite some bright spots specifically from Gadou in progression, there were also some calamitous errors that gave Hoffenheim control of the momentum. Anton has been given the tricky task of leading a young, inexperienced back line. Gadou and Mane are talented, but they are both really in their first seasons of top flight football. Anton needs to keep them in check and handle his defensive duties as well. It's a lot of responsibity for BVB's stand-in captain. Anton's tenacity to win the ball high up the pitch got his team back into the game, and he deserves credit for his efforts across the pitch.
An additional note on Mane. I'm worried about this kid. Two hamstring injuries in only a few professional matches point to either a more serious issue, or insufficient preparation from the physio team. Mane has looked promising in the lead up to the season, but these injuries threaten to derail his career. BVB need to get their well-paid medical staff to figure out what's going on here.
Anyone seen the midfield? I can't seem to find it.
I'm not sure if we blame Kovac here, blame the players, blame the system, but my goodness where is our central spine? Hoffenheim ran down the throat of the BVB defense for the entire first half because there seemed to be no cover in front of it. Maybe we will see more of Veerman in the weeks to come, but it's not like the dutchman is some deep-lying enforcer—he is a creator. If BVB are going to be fielding a juvenile back line for the next few weeks (they are), the midfield needs to provide some better cover.

Borussia Dortmund are reportedly set to sign Ethan Nwaneri from English champions ****** nal to replace Giannis Konstantelias who is out injured for many months.
News reports on Tuesday said that Nwaneri is to play on a season-long loan at the Bundesliga runners-up.
Konstantelias ruptured the cruciate knee ligament in Saturday's league match against SV Hamburg and will not be able to play for a long time. He had arrived recent from PAOK in his native Greece.
Nwaneri, 19, came through ****** nal's academy and has played 51 first-team matches for the Gunners, scoring 10 goals and providing two ****** ists. He played on loan at Olympique Marseille last season.
A potential deal must be finalized on Tuesday as the Bundesliga transfer window closes at 8pm (1800 GMT).

Borussia Dortmund have agreed a deal with **** nal to sign Ethan Nwaneri on a season-long loan.
The German club are set to sign the forward, 19, after losing new signing Giannis Konstantelias to a significant knee injury sustained during Saturday's 2-0 win over Hamburg.
Nwaneri - who Dortmund tried to sign last summer - is now expected to arrive in Germany for a medical and to complete the move before the Bundesliga transfer deadline at 19:00 BST.
BBC Sport revealed earlier this month that **** nal would prioritise loan offers for Nwaneri, who they do not want to sell.
The Gunners academy graduate has attracted interest from clubs across the Premier League and Europe during this summer's window.

As reported by David Ornstein, ****** nal's Ethan Nwaneri is set to join Borussia Dortmund on a season-long loan.
The 19-year-old winger is set to be the replacement for Greek international Giannis Konstantelias, who suffered an ACL injury on his debut last weekend.
Nwaneri is seen as one of England's top U21 talents and is now set to get more minutes in the Bundesliga with Niko Kovac's Borussia Dortmund.
As per the deal, BVB are expected to cover the wages of the youngster.

After reports emerged earlier on Monday that Borussia Dortmund were exploring a late move for Ethan Nwaneri, the Black and Yellows have now seemingly stepped up their interest.
According to the BBC, Dortmund have submitted an offer to take the young forward on loan for the remainder of the season.
The report adds that ***** nal are expected to make a decision on the proposal on Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, transfer insider Sacha Tavolieri claims that Dortmund are confident of completing a deal for Nwaneri before Tuesday's deadline.

Borussia Dortmund may have identified another possible replacement for the injured Giannis Konstantelias, with Polish talent Marcel Regula reportedly emerging as a serious late-window option. Polish outlet Meczyki.pl – as relayed by FT – reports that BVB have reached an agreement with both Zagłębie Lubin and the 19-year-old attacking midfielder over a possible transfer.
The deal is not yet complete, however.
Dortmund are reportedly continuing to **** s several alternatives before making a final decision, with **** nal youngster Ethan Nwaneri still among the options under consideration. Zagłębie and Regula are nevertheless said to be waiting for the Bundesliga club to give the green light.
Regula has already been linked with Dortmund this summer, with BVB interest first surfacing at the beginning of August. The Poland U21 international has also attracted attention from Cologne, who reportedly explored a move amid uncertainty surrounding Said El Mala's future.
A transfer fee of approximately €8m had previously been discussed for Regula, who currently maintains an estimated €7m market value in the latest Transfermarkt listings. The teenager could represent a comparatively inexpensive permanent solution for Dortmund after Konstantelias' serious knee injury forced the Dortmund administrative team to re-enter the summer transfer market after spending heavily to complete the squad.

Arsenal have reportedly given Newcastle United permission to pursue a loan deal for Ethan Nwaneri before the transfer deadline, while apparently making clear that a permanent departure is not under consideration, which would fit with how we took Mikel Arteta's comments about the midfielder earlier this month.
The 19-year-old is back in north London after a difficult loan spell with Marseille, where he dropped out of the side after Roberto De Zerbi left.
Football Insider reporter Harri Burton reported: "Newcastle United have been given the green light to sign one of ***** nal's best and brightest before the window slams shut.

Mikel Arteta says that some of his **** nal squad "need to face that reality" that their futures lie elsewhere, but expects Myles Lewis-Skelly to stay at the club.
The midfielder, who can also play at full-back, has been linked with moves to Chelsea and Manchester United this summer.
But Arteta does not foresee the 19-year-old leaving the Gunners before Deadline Day on on 1st September.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of **** nal's Premier League opener at Coventry City, the Basque native said he was "100 per cent" confident that Lewis-Skelly would remain at the north London outfit.
Tough conversations will need to be had with other members of the **** nal squad, however. Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus and Ethan Nwaneri have all been heavily linked with transfers this summer.

James McNicholas reports for The Athletic that there are no active negotiations between ****** nal and Galatasaray over a potential transfer for Victor Osimhen.
McNicholas confirms the two clubs have been in dialogue over several players, but it seems this isn't a deal they're currently negotiating.

Matt Law had initially reported for The Telegraph that during talks between ****** nal and Galatasaray over Gabriel Martinelli and Ethan Nwaneri, the topic of Osimhen's availability was raised.

Ethan Nwaneri is expected to leave ****** nal before the end of the summer transfer window, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have previously been linked with the 19-year-old, while AC Milan are also reportedly monitoring the player.
Nwaneri was completely left out of the squad for ****** nal's 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City on Sunday.
Speaking ahead of the game, ****** nal head coach Mikel Arteta hinted that the youngster could leave the club in search of more playing time.
"I want him to be at the club, but in the middle, long term, what is best for the player? Ethan needs to play football, and if he stays here, it's because we can guarantee that he can have those minutes. Otherwise, it's just something that is not good for anybody, I think," he said.

Mikel Arteta has indicated that Ethan Nwaneri could spend another season away from **** nal, admitting the teenager must play regular football if he is to continue the impressive progress he has made so far
Nwaneri's future has been one of the biggest talking points of **** nal's summer, with reports suggesting the Premier League champions have even considered a permanent sale.
Yet Arteta's latest comments ahead of the Community Shield against Manchester City point towards a different outcome.
Rather than hinting at an exit, the **** nal manager suggested another temporary move could be the best solution if first-team opportunities at the Emirates cannot be guaranteed.

David Seaman thinks Max Dowman has the potential to develop into a legend of the game like Ryan Giggs was during his playing days.
Dowman is the latest exciting youngster in the **** nal team, and the Gunners look set to hand him an important role in their squad this season. Last term was his breakout campaign, and as they prepare to offload Ethan Nwaneri in this window, he is expected to play a bigger role at the Emirates.
Dowman is one of the top players **** nal have developed in recent times, and the attacker has all it takes to reach the top. He also plays for a team that can help him achieve that.
Arsenal will continue to do their best to ensure he progresses and receives the support required to develop well, but the question remains whether he can become as good as Giggs.
Seaman is sure that the attacker has what it takes to become one of the biggest legends in the game if he continues to develop.

Myles Lewis-Skelly is already a hot topic and the season isn't officially under way.
The 19-year-old's long-term future at **** nal has been debated since he slipped down the pecking order last season - behind Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapie - as **** nal's third choice left-back.
In his breakthrough season in 2024-25, he quickly developed into one of the best young full-backs in the Premier League, which led to him earning a place in the England squad and becoming the youngest man to score on his Three Lions debut.
The following summer, the academy graduate was rewarded with a new five-year contract. But last season was more difficult.
Arsenal had considered listening to offers for Lewis-Skelly, with club sources indicating in April they would look to recoup a minimum combined £100m for Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri.

Arsenal host Como in the final preseason match of the summer. After today, it's Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday. The Premier League season opens with ******* nal hosting Coventry City on Friday, August 21st. We're almost there.
The England and Spain World Cup contingent have returned to training — they're in the images published by the club — but it's not clear if they'll feature today. William Saliba will be out for a while recovering from a back fracture. Jurrien Timber is "weeks" away as he recovers from the groin problem that kept him out of the World Cup. I'd expect Bruno Guimaraes to make his first appearance in an ******* nal shirt today.
Now is the time for Mikel Arteta and his squad to be making their final preparations for the long season ahead and putting themselves in the best position to hit the ground running. Whether that is accomplished by getting as many first choice players "game situation" minutes or progressing them back into the swing of things with limited time is a question best answered by the significant amounts of information, data, and health / fitness ******* sments available to the club and not to us. Basically what I'm saying is we shouldn't read anything into who plays and for how long.
One thing I would keep an eye on (and take with appropriate preseason grains of salt) is who looks good individually. The team stuff will come when the right combinations of players are on the field together. So far this preseason, Kai Havertz, Chritos Tzolis, and Martin Ødegaard have looked particularly good. Max Dowman is playing well and pushing for more regular involvement once the season starts. Ethan Nwaneri put in a solid performance against Dortmund after being disappointingly anonymous earlier in preseason.
Lineups will be posted when available. For most of y'all, the match will be available to stream on ******* nal's YouTube channel. If it isn't, check here for where it is being shown in your region.

Arsenal were beaten 3-2 by Borussia Dortmund at the Emirates Stadium in their latest pre-season outing.
Two goals in the first half an hour stunned ***** nal, who have won the Emirates Cup trophy for the last four years on the spin but have lost out this year.
Arsenal did get one back through Ethan Nwaneri, before Jaone Gadou fired the German side two goals ahead once more. A Gyokeres penalty reduced the deficit to one again, but it was not enough for ***** nal to take home the trophy.
Arsenal thought they had equalised in the final minute of the match when Gabriel Martinelli fired home, but the flag was up for offside.
Here are five of the main takeaways from the match…

Arsenal suffered a second consecutive pre-season defeat ahead of the start of their Premier League ***** le defence as clinical Borussia Dortmund won the Emirates Cup with a 3-2 victory in north London.
New signing Bruno Guimaraes was unveiled to the ***** nal fans before kick-off and there was a party atmosphere as the Gunners returned to the Emirates for the first time since lifting the Premier League ***** le in May.
Captain Martin Odegaard returned for the first time since the World Cup and Gabrel Magalhaes started in defence, but sharp finishes from the visitors' Samuele Inacio and Konstantinos Karetsas left ***** nal two goals down before half-time.

Arsenal were beaten 3-1 by Real Betis In Dublin on Wednesday and quickly found themselves trailing by the same scoreline when Joane Gadou bundled in from a corner moments after Ethan Nwaneri had pulled one back.

Well folks, it's that time again. August is here and so begins ******* nal's slate of preseason matches. Today, the Gunners face Girona to cap off a week of training in Spain. They take on Real Betis (and Hector Bellerin) in Dublin on Wednesday, August 5th, Dortmund next Sunday in the Emirates Cup, and Como on August 12th before the Community Shield on August 16th. The Premier League season kicks off in less than three weeks — the 21st home to newly promoted Coventry.
Arsenal – Kepa, White, Mosquera, Hincapie, Calafiori, Lewis-Skelly, Havertz, Nwaneri, Dowman, Tzolis, Gyokeres
Everyone should be prepared to overreact wildly to a lineup several players off the first XI. Because that's what you do in the preseason, after all. None of Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Magalhaes, Martin Ødegaard, Declan Rice, Ebere Eze, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, David Raya, Mikel Merino, Martin Zubimendi, nor William Saliba are in today's squad.
The Brazilians rejoined the team in the last day or two. Gabriel Martinelli got married a few days ago in Greece but is back with the squad. Martin Ødegaard is due back next week. The England players after that and the Spanish contingent last of all. William Saliba will miss a fair bit of time recovering from the back injury he played through at the end of the season and during the World Cup.
The Gunners are also expected to do a fair bit of business before the start of the season. A move for Bruno Guimaraes seems close. The rumors are swirling around a massive move for Vini Jr. The club intends to sign a CB to cover during Saliba's absence. They may also sign a right back — Jurrien Timber is still recovering from the groin problem that kept him out of the World Cup.

Everton want to sign Ethan Nwaneri from ***** nal this summer following his loan spell at Olympique Marseille during the second half of last season.
Nwaneri has been one of the best players promoted from the ***** nal academy in recent years, and his time in France provided him with valuable first-team experience. The attacker is regarded as a talented player who could make the Gunners an even stronger side if he reaches his full potential.
Despite his potential, Nwaneri could struggle for regular game time at ***** nal again this season because of the competition for places. The Gunners are aware of the situation and have been linked with allowing him to leave on loan once more so that he can continue his development.
According to Football Insider, Everton are now considering a move to make the youngster part of their squad this summer. The Merseyside club believe he could strengthen their attacking options and provide quality for the future.
Everton are not the only club monitoring the ***** nal youngster. Fulham, RB Leipzig and AC Milan are also reported to be interested in signing him on a permanent transfer during this transfer window, increasing the competition for his signature.

Serie A giants Milan have enquired about ******* nal's attacking midfielder Nwaneri, according to Matteo Moretto.
The Italian transfer expert has claimed that there have been contacts between the Rossoneri and ******* nal as Milan sounded out the 19-year-old's availability.
Milan aren't the only club in the race as Nwaneri has attracted interest from many other European clubs, especially RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, Fulham and Everton in the English Premier League.
Arsenal are open to letting the 19-year-old leave, but ideally on a permanent transfer and keeping control over him.

Arsenal have successfully convinced highly rated teenage midfielder Emerson Nwaneri to reject elite domestic interest and commit his long-term future to the North London club. Mikel Arteta is friends with the Gunners and is at the Emirates Stadium. The breakthrough follows lengthy and complex negotiations between the club's hierarchy and the player's representatives. Heading into the summer window, Nwaneri's standout performances had attracted significant attention across the Premier League, with Chelsea and Manchester City both preparing lucrative development pathways to lure the young playmaker away from North London. However, the England Under-16 international has made it clear that he is content with his current environment and has chosen to remain at the Sobha Realty Training Centre.
Nwaneri is regarded as one of Hale End's most exciting generational prospects. A versatile central midfielder with an eye for breaking lines, he has already been fast-tracked across multiple youth levels thanks to his tactical flexibility. In the recent domestic campaign, he made 12 appearances in the U18 Premier League South, contributing two goals and two **** ists despite often playing against older opposition. His progress culminated in a senior Under-21 debut in Premier League 2 and an immediate call-up to the UEFA Youth League to face Bayern Munich.
Crucially, his commitment ensures that a notable footballing lineage remains at **** nal. Emerson is the younger brother of first-team starlet Ethan Nwaneri, who spent last season on loan with French giants Marseille. Having witnessed his brother become the youngest player in Premier League history under Mikel Arteta, Emerson was heavily influenced by **** nal's pathway to senior football in his decision-making.
With his schoolboy terms now concluded, Nwaneri will be formally integrated into the Gunners' next intake of scholars. This structure ensures his enrollment in the academy's full-time training programme and guarantees an automatic professional contract upon his seventeenth birthday.

Arsenal's potentially modest summer transfer plans and Ethan Nwaneri's future has been the subject of several questions sent in via our 'Ask about ******* nal' form'.
Nwaneri is in an interesting position at ******* nal.
It is still easy to forget just how young he is as it feels like he has been around for a while now.
But he is still only 19 and has had one successful breakout season with ******* nal and also a senior loan to Marseille now.
However, he was sent on loan during the season that ******* nal won the ******* le and was not part of the group that got over the line.

Ethan Nwaneri has become the subject of serious interest from Newcastle United following his loan spell at Olympique Marseille, as reported by Football365. The youngster spent the second half of a successful campaign on loan at Olympique Marseille, where he demonstrated his quality despite a challenging period under two different managers. His performances strengthened his reputation as a promising midfielder with significant long-term potential.
He remains highly rated at ******* nal, but could struggle for regular game time next season, which has encouraged Newcastle United to consider an approach. The Magpies have been one of the strongest teams in the Premier League under Eddie Howe in recent seasons and have continued to perform at a high level, meaning he would be joining a well-coached side with strong tactical structure.
His loan spell at Olympique Marseille provided valuable exposure to senior football in a demanding environment. Despite managerial changes, he adapted to different tactical demands and continued to show technical ability in possession and progression through midfield. Clubs across Europe have taken note of his composure and ability to influence matches at a young age.
Arsenal continue to regard him as an important development prospect, but they are also aware that competition for places in midfield is intense. As a result, any decision regarding his future will need to balance immediate playing opportunities with long-term growth.
Newcastle are now monitoring his situation and are believed to be considering a significant offer. Reports suggest they could be prepared to invest up to €30 million, viewing him as a top talent who could develop further under structured coaching and regular Premier League football.

Manchester United appear to have hit a stumbling block in their pursuit of Leicester City speedster Jeremy Monga. The Red Devils’ form in the final third of the pitch improved drastically in the 2025/26 campaign following an investment of over £200 million in the frontline last summer.
United scored 69 goals in 38 Premier League games, just two fewer than champions ******* nal. While Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko have all enjoyed impressive debut campaigns, the English giants remain on the hunt for further attacking reinforcements this year.
The idea is to add more width to the frontline, as neither Cunha nor Mbeumo are natural wingers. The duo have a tendency to drift inside, and the Red Devils are looking for a speedy winger who can stretch the opposition and add another dimension to their attack.
RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande and Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye have been named as options, but INEOS also remain alert to rising stars from across the country. A previous report relayed by The Peoples Person suggests that Monga is on United’s wish list this year.
Monga rose through the ranks at the King Power Stadium and broke into the senior side in April 2025. He subsequently became the second-youngest player to feature in the Premier League, behind ******* nal’s Ethan Nwaneri.
