NEW DELHI: For Kirandeep Singh, the moment Shubman Gill noticed him was more than just another net session. It was the moment a youngster from Cholta Kalan, a village in Punjab's Mohali district, began to believe that his cricketing dream could become a reality.
Kirandeep was playing tennis-ball cricket when he first came to Gill's attention in 2025. He had gone for practice in Mohali when he was told that Gill was around. Later, the two crossed paths at the Mullanpur International Cricket Stadium, where Kirandeep got the opportunity to bowl to the India star for the first time.
Gill did not take long to spot something in the youngster.
"He said, 'You are bowling really well.' I told him that I was playing tennis-ball cricket," Kirandeep recalled.
Gill's response changed the direction of Kirandeep's cricketing journey.
"He then said, 'You shouldn't play tennis-ball cricket anymore. From now on, you have to play with a leather ball.' He told me to stop playing tennis-ball cricket and said, 'If you ever need anything, just let us know.'"
That encouragement stayed with Kirandeep as he worked towards making the switch to leather-ball cricket and chasing a professional career.
Now, the 20-year-old has another chance to turn that advice into a breakthrough. Fazilka Falcons bought him for Rs 20,000 in the Sher-e-Punjab T20 auction, giving the youngster an opportunity to play in the same team as Gill, who will captain the side.
For Kirandeep, the journey from the government school ground in Cholta Kalan to the Sher-e-Punjab T20 is already a story of opportunity. The next chapter will be about proving that Gill's eye for talent was right.
The tournament is set to begin on August 30.

Arsenal are reportedly continuing to monitor Bradley Barcola, but Liverpool have moved first with a fresh attempt to prise the winger away from Paris Saint-Germain.
According to L'Equipe, Liverpool have submitted a bid worth an estimated €115 million for the France international as they step up their efforts to complete one of the biggest transfers of the summer.
The French newspaper reports that the proposal is expected to be rejected, but says it represents a significant shift in negotiations after several days of discussions between the clubs.

Speaking to CBS Mornings after the United States' elimination from their home World Cup, Balogun acknowledged that while he felt initial relief when FIFA lifted his suspension, the political involvement created an uncomfortable atmosphere within the squad.
"The first feeling was relief and happiness," Balogun said. "But shortly after, I realized the decision would provoke great repercussion and increase pressure on the entire group. As the match approached, you could notice a certain discomfort among my teammates."
The controversy began during the United States' 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, when Brazilian referee Raphael Claus showed Balogun a red card after VAR review. The striker had caught defender Muharemovic's heel while challenging for the ball.

A major setback has struck both Raphinha and Brazil. Just as the FC Barcelona winger appeared to be rediscovering his best form at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, injury has struck once again.
The 29-year-old was forced off during the first half of Brazil’s 3-0 victory over Haiti at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia in the second round of Group C matches. Brazil top the group, but the win came at a heavy cost.
Raphinha left the pitch close to the 40th minute, visibly concerned and accompanied by Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar.
While the rest of the squad carried out recovery work on Saturday, Raphinha travelled to a medical centre in New Jersey for further scans.

NEW DELHI: A heartwarming moment involving India captain Shubman Gill has gone viral following India's dominant victory over Afghanistan in the one-off Test at the New PCA Stadium in Mullanpur.
In a video that has been widely shared on social media, a young ball boy stationed near the boundary ropes was seen touching Gill's feet as the India skipper walked back to the pavilion after scoring a superb century.
Gill, who led from the front with a brilliant 126, acknowledged the youngster's gesture before continuing towards the dressing room. The touching interaction quickly became one of the standout moments of the match.
Manav Suthar steals the show on debut
While Gill's century and the viral video grabbed attention, the match ultimately belonged to debutant left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, who enjoyed a dream start to his Test career.

The Rajasthan spinner claimed seven wickets in the match, including a sensational 6/33 in Afghanistan's first innings, as India completed their biggest-ever victory in Test cricket by an innings and 300 runs.
After electing to bat, India posted a massive 564/8 declared. Alongside Gill's 126, KL Rahul scored 100, while Sai Sudharsan and Rishabh Pant contributed 81 each. Washington Sundar added the finishing touches with an unbeaten 52.
Afghanistan unable to recover
Afghanistan resumed Day 3 on 113/5 and were eventually bowled out for 152 despite a fighting 60 from Rahmat Shah. Suthar ripped through the lower order to register the second-best bowling figures by an Indian on Test debut.
Asked to follow on, Afghanistan showed some resistance through Abdul Malik and Sediqullah Atal, who added 42 runs for the opening wicket. Atal looked comfortable during his knock of 42, but India's bowlers gradually tightened their grip on the contest.

"I don't think Rishabh alone has to play according to the situation. Every player has a different style. Sai Sudharsan plays differently, Shubman Gill plays differently, KL Rahul plays differently and Rishabh plays differently. What we want is for everyone to play their own game with complete freedom," Kotak said after India's dominant showing in the one-off Test against Afghanistan.
Kotak explained that while every player has the freedom to express themselves, the team's requirements remain paramount.
"When the team needs something specific in red-ball cricket, every batter has to respond to that need. But Rishabh is a senior player who understands the game. Why would anyone tell him how to bat? He reads bowlers, changes gears and often tries things bowlers do not expect. That is his strength."

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's childhood coach Manish Ojha describes his ward as a "God's child" and credits fate and divine guidance for bringing the youngster to his academy.
"A couple of years ago, I thanked Vaibhav's father (Sanjeev Sooryavanshi) for bringing the kid to me. Ispe bhagwaan ka haath hai (He is God's child). It is because of him that I got recognition, otherwise who gives two cents about a cricket coach in Bihar?," an emotional Manish tells TimesofIndia.com after the 15-year-old received his maiden India call-up for the Ireland and England series.
"Sab Bhagwaan ki kripa hai (God has been kind). The kid is immensely talented and has worked hard. Credit to his father as well," he says.

Ojha says his ward is a "quick learner". According to him, the preparation before every game helps Sooryavanshi play his aggressive brand of cricket and take on the best bowlers without fear.
"He prepares in his own way. It's not that he sits with video ******* ysts, but he does his homework," says Ojha.
This conscientious approach and unshakeable temperament led the selectors to name the explosive Sooryavanshi in the squad for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England.
Sooryavanshi has not only caught the attention of greats like Tendulkar and Kohli, but India's Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill has also been effusive in his praise for the teenager. In a near-solo effort, Sooryavanshi almost dragged Rajasthan Royals into the IPL 2026 final. In the Eliminator, he smashed a 29-ball 97 against Sunrisers Hyderabad and then followed it up with a 47-ball 96 against Gill's Gujarat ******* ans.

"A couple of years ago, I thanked Vaibhav's father (Sanjeev Sooryavanshi) for bringing the kid to me. Ispe bhagwaan ka haath hai (He is God's child). It is because of him that I got recognition, otherwise who gives two cents about a cricket coach in Bihar?," an emotional Manish tells TimesofIndia.com after the 15-year-old received his maiden India call-up for the Ireland and England series.

India will lock horns with Afghanistan in a one-off Test match at the New PCA Cricket Stadium in Mullan, New Chandigarh.
The two sides have met only once in Test matches in the historic game in 2018, when Afghanistan made their debut as a Test nation. Back then, India had comfortably won the one-off game.
