Manchester United is finding wins hard to come by at the moment. Indeed, Michael Carrick's team is currently on a run of six matches in all competitions without a victory. Sunday's 1-1 draw against Leeds United was the latest underwhelming performance and result by the Old Trafford outfit.
There were, however, some positives for Carrick to pick out of the display, not least the performance of Carlos Baleba. In his first Premier League start as a Manchester United player, the Cameroonian was a commanding presence in central midfield, helping his new team on both sides of the ball.
LEEDS, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 18: Carlos Baleba of Manchester United controls the ball whilst under pressure from Dominic Calvert-Lewin of Leeds United during the Premier League 2026/27 match between Leeds United and Manchester United at Elland Road on October 18, 2026 in Leeds, England. Carrick reshuffled his midfield unit for the trip to Elland Road, deploying Baleba and Andrey Santos at the base. This gave United a strong foundation to build from. Ahead of the pair, Bruno Fernandes and Youri Tielemans were positioned in an advanced role where they could influence the attacking play in front of them.
It was a midfield set up that gave Manchester United greater control of the match even if it still struggled to create good enough opportunities to find the back of the net. In Baleba, Carrick might finally have a two-way midfielder to build around with Santos also demonstrating his potential.

This past weekend marked our first UK basketball/football doubleheader, and now we're preparing for another with two games in Lexington this coming weekend for the Kentucky Wildcats.
On Friday, Mark Pope's Wildcats will face a stiff pre-season test, as the Texas Tech Red Raiders come to town. The Red Raiders are projected to be a top-25 team to start the season, but they currently face eligibility questions regarding some key players, including returners Darrion Williams and Donovan Atwell, as well as UCF transfer JaMichael Stillwell.
Star forward JT Toppin is also out this week as he continues to recover from a torn ACL that will likely keep him out until sometime in conference play.
Regardless, Texas Tech under Grant McCasland has been solid and should be a good measuring stick to see where this Kentucky team stands heading into the season.
Meanwhile, Kentucky Football returns home for an SEC matchup against Vanderbilt in front of what was recently announced as a sold-out crowd at Kroger Field.

The World Series matchup isn't set in stone just yet, but Tampa Bay took a major step towards being the one that will face Milwaukee in the Fall Classic. They took two out of three in Cleveland to return home with a 3-2 series lead heading into a big Game 6 tonight, where they'll start Freddy Peralta who has been dealing this postseason while the Guardians will scramble to piece their way through a bullpen game after having to get 21 outs from their relievers yesterday. Thanks to the postponed Game 4 eating up the travel day, even if they do win tonight they'll also be forced to play the potential do-or-die Game 7 on four straight days without a night off — it's not looking pretty for Cleveland, to say the least.
We've got a full slate for you ahead of this critical Game 6 later tonight, starting with Jake's recap of Game 5's action in the Roundup. Michael hands out a stellar grade to David Bednar to kick off our annual Report Card series, and Kevin recalls Sandy Alomar Sr. and his days with the Yankees on his birthday. Then in the afternoon Jonathan goes over the Yankees' longest home runs of the season and Estevao reflects on the gap between Giancarlo Stanton and 500 career home runs before I return to open up the mailbag for more of your questions.

Maryland football made a coaching change ahead of its bye week, but not the one fans were expecting. Defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach Ted Monachino was fired Sunday, ending his time with the program.
Terrapins Make Change at Defensive Coordinator Positionhttps://t.co/269LMby1wm
Monachino's defense has conceded the eighth-most points (233) in the country this season, including nearly 44 per game during its five-game skid. The Terps gave up at least 40 points in three straight games and allowed Rutgers to score 24 second-half points Saturday.
"I appreciate Ted's hard work and dedication to our program during his time in College Park," head coach Michael Locksley said. "As I evaluate our program, I believe this change is necessary. We wish Ted all the best moving forward."
Maryland, who was tied for the Big Ten lead with 19 interceptions in 2025, has allowed 451.6 yards per game against power conference foes this season. UCLA, Nebraska and then-No. 5 Ohio State each rushed for over 200 yards during their blowout wins over the Terps.

The Ballon d'Or may be heading to Germany, with Harry Kane back as the favourite to lift the trophy on betting sites.
After scoring 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country, including six goals for England at the World Cup, Kane has been reinstalled as the favourite to clinch world football's top individual honour.
The race previously shifted in favour of Barcelona's Lamine Yamal, with the teenager going odds-on with the bookies after he played his part in Spain becoming the world champions for only the second time.
But ahead of the glittering ceremony on October 26, the England skipper could be about to add even more honours to his already impressive CV.
Were Kane to win the Ballon d'Or, he'd be only the fifth Englishman to clinch the prize and the first since Michael Owen in 2001. He was installed as the early frontrunner by football betting sites after a storming 2025/26 campaign.

A look up and a precise finish with sublime skill: Michael Olise once again demonstrated his exceptional quality in FC Bayern's 5–0 win over Bodø/Glimt. In the 83rd minute of the Champions League encounter, the Frenchman picked up pace down the right flank, cut inside and curled the ball beautifully into the top corner. A goal that was the perfect way to kick off the new Champions League campaign.
The German record champions' fans were thrilled by Olise's goal and chose it as FC Bayern's Goal of the Month for September. With 43.4 per cent of the vote, the forward came out on top against Alphonso Davies, who had also scored a spectacular goal to make it 3–0 during that same 5–0 win. Davies received 20.1 per cent of the vote.
Hot on Davies' heels were Jamal Musiala with his opener against Union Berlin (16.8 per cent) and Momoko Tanikawa, who also received 16.8 per cent of the votes for her winner against SC Freiburg. Fifth place went to Bogdan Olychenko for his opener for the FC Bayern reserves against Eichstätt (2.9 per cent).
It's already Olise's second consecutive fan accolade following his Goal of the Month for August. With his stunning finish against Bodø/Glimt, the Frenchman once again demonstrated that he's set to deliver special moments on a regular basis this season too.
Olise has been shortlisted for the Ballon d'Or alongside Harry Kane, Luis Díaz and Dayot Upamecano:

Many cannot understand why Shea Lacey has not featured in the last four Manchester United games.
The last time the academy graduate played, he produced an eye-opening performance against Leeds. He received the ball with his back to goal, turned sharply, and carved out just enough ****** e to whip a composed left-footed strike past the Brighton defenders and goalkeeper, breaking the deadlock.
United may have lost that game and been knocked out of the Carabao Cup, but Lacey's performance, crowned by a beauty of a goal, should have strengthened his case for starts and more minutes. Instead, Michael Carrick has rewarded that display by gluing him to the bench.
That has been baffling. In every game since, United have been crying out for a goal, a spark, or something different from the bench. Yet Carrick has ignored him while the team struggles to score, managing only three goals despite creating plenty of chances.
One of JJ Gabriel's biggest concerns, and his reason for wanting out, is that he is not being guaranteed the game time he believes he deserves. Would the Lacey treatment give him, or any other academy star, hope of a key role under Carrick?

Michael Carrick singled out Youri Tielemans for praise following Sunday's stalemate at Elland Road.
Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw with their arch-rivals Leeds United, leaving them 13th-placed by the end of the weekend.
Weighing in on his side's performance post-match, Carrick said of the summer signing: "I've been really impressed with Youri. He's exactly what we thought and hoped for, bringing him into the group.
"I think his experience, his presence, [and] his personality [are beneficial]. Youri's definitely one of those where he'll do anything you ask him for the benefit of the team.

After the false start and the worst start, Michael Carrick ******* ounced it a fresh start. Manchester United have their fewest wins in their opening seven league games of a campaign for 40 years – just the one – and have not tasted victory in six matches in all competitions. Their manager nevertheless emerged from consecutive away games that brought defeat to Atletico Madrid and a draw at Leeds appearing more upbeat about their prospects.
"I understand the situation doesn't look too good if you look at it from a certain way, but I got no doubts that we can go on a good run," he said. That certain way could involve referencing results or the league table; seven games in, the club who finished third last season are already nine points adrift of the top three.
Carrick believes he has detected a good feeling around his squad, whether or not it stems from Lisandro Martinez's public criticism of director of football Jason Wilcox. "I felt like [it was] a bit of a fresh start today and where we're at, and accepting it and doing something about it," he said. Perhaps not doing enough about it, given the result was exactly the same – a 1-1 draw – as in their previous two league games.
Michael Carrick thinks Man United's new-look midfield, including Youri Tielemans (pictured), can lead their rebuild (Reuters)
If there is improvement in Carrick's camp, it has come from a low bar. And, in fairness, the performances in the intimidating atmospheres of the Metropolitano and Elland Road are not among United's four worst this season – Hull, Manchester City, Brighton, Tottenham – but, again, that is scarcely a compliment.

Gary Neville is hugely impressed with what he's seen of Carlos Baleba over the last week.
The midfielder has now overseen his first three appearances for Manchester United since making a £70 million move from Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer.
Baleba endured a delayed start to the campaign due to an ankle ligament injury that he sustained in pre-season with the Seagulls, meaning his debut only came on October 10 during the draw with Tottenham Hotspur.
His first start then came three days later against Atletico Madrid, which also marked his maiden appearance in the Champions League, and he was also deployed from the off at Elland Road yesterday.

Michael Carrick has shed some light on Manchester United's injury problems of late.
The manager addressed reporters following Manchester United's 1-1 draw at Elland Road against rivals Leeds United yesterday.
(Photo via ManUtd on Twitter/X)
Post-match, Carrick said that the reason Lisandro Martinez had to be withdrawn at the interval was that he had suffered a 'thigh problem' in the first 45 minutes.
Keen to not make it any worse, the centre-half was hooked before play got back underway, with Noussair Mazraoui taking his place.

Michael Carrick has admitted Manchester United's situation "doesn't look great" after a 1-1 draw at Leeds, but insisted the performance at Elland Road felt like a "fresh start" for his side.
United have collected just seven points from their sevenPremier League games and have won only once in seven matches in all competitions. They sit in the bottom half and are still waiting for a first win since August.
A single league win after seven games is the club's fewest victories at this stage of a top-flight season since 1986-87.
Carrick did not hide from the numbers, but he backed his squad to turn things around.
"We are not accepting that everything's great, but sometimes you do struggle and you have to find a way through it. I understand the situation doesn't look great but I have no doubts we can go on a good run."

Manchester United secured a 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road.
The away side took the lead and silenced the home crowd when a neat move was finished off by Bryan Mbeumo, who scored his fourth goal of the season.
Nonetheless, United have had an issue keeping clean sheets all season, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin muscled his way into the box in the second half to give the home side a share of the points.
The Red Devils have now drawn four, won one, and lost two of their Premier League matches this season, and sit in 13th place in the league.
Commenting on the result while working for Sky Sports, the former United captain stated, "there's a depressed standard and a low expectation right now. But it'll feel like a stepping stone for Michael Carrick, and it'll feel like the first step on the ladder in the Premier League."

#season #premier #home

Manchester United drew 1-1 with Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils went ahead after 35 minutes when Bryan Mbeumo completed a fine move to put United in the lead going into half time.
Unfortunately, United's frail defence was once again exposed when Dominic Calvert-Lewin bullied his way into the penalty box and scored an equaliser.
The draw in isolation was not a poor result, but the fact that United now have one league win in seven very much heaps the pressure on Michael Carrick and his team.
The Belgian has not been everybody's cup of tea since joining the club in the summer, but he is certainly playing regularly, proving how important he is to Michael Carrick.

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Germie Bernard caught 11 of 12 targets for 87 yards with a touchdown in a Week 6 overtime win over the Tampa Bay Bucs.
SOURCE: USA TODAY
Why it matters: Bernard's first NFL touchdown with 3:15 left in OT gave Pittsburgh the lead. Bernard was a bright spot in preseason camp and has shown his ability the last two weeks; he had six catches for 80 yards last week against Indianapolis. With WR Michael Pittman on IR, Bernard should be considered as a WR4/Flex option with WR3 potential.

Las Vegas Raiders TE Michael Mayer caught seven of his nine targets for 95 yards in a 33-30 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 6.
SOURCE: USAToday.com
Why it Matters: Although Mayer has been quiet in four of the six games this year, he has topped 80 receiving yards in two of his last three outings, tallying a combined 15 receptions in those two contests. The lack of consistency makes Mayer a risky play, but with the ceiling he has shown recently, he can at least be on the TE2 radar.

Week 6 in the NFL has come and gone, and what a week it was! We saw some wild games across the league, with plenty of scoring, overtime, upsets- you name it! But what were the biggest fantasy football storylines to come from all that?
Caleb Williams is back! And back in a big way for the Bears, going 305/1/0 on 30 of 36 passes, in a win over the Atlanta Falcons. It also appears that Williams has reinvigorated the fantasy potential of Luther Burden and Colston Loveland, who were both off to mixed starts this season. It's also somewhat good to see that their defense is still terrible, which will only further boost Williams' production. They'll be forced into higher-scoring games, which is great for fantasy production.
So many of us want to believe that Kyle Pitts will be an elite tight end, but the lack of consistent production makes it tough to put him in our lineups every week. He's looked good over the last two weeks, but that's been bolstered by some touchdowns. Drake London still leads the team in target share, but if Michael Penix is willing to look to Pitts in the red zone, the touchdown upside will be there for him. I continue to think that Pitts is a low-end TE1 on most weeks, given the overall offensive potential of the Falcons.
While it was only his second game this season, Omar Cooper Jr. looked great for the Jets. A big 103 yards on 6 receptions and one touchdown pushed him to the top of the box score against the Patriots. It's also nice to see him do this while Garrett Wilson was also playing for the Jets. However, the question becomes: is this sustainable? Once Breece Hall gets back to the Jets offense, their overall dynamic might change, but Cooper Jr. has a role right now.
Is Noel the key to the Texans offense? The run game certainly isn't great; we know how good Nico Collins is, but they are missing another element, and Noel is shaping up to be that answer. Coming into this week, he led the Texans with 17.5 yards per reception and 13.35 yards per target. He brought this into the matchup versus the Jaguars and ended with 4/107/1, which is certainly his ceiling outcome, but this is the third straight week he's had either 80-plus receiving yards or a touchdown.

Michael Douglas has finally revealed why he refused to appear on David Letterman's talk show for almost two decades.
In his new memoir One ****** uva Ride, the Wall Street actor recounted how he had promoted various projects on the Late Show with David Letterman.
"I had been a regular guest on Letterman's show earlier in my career, but the last time I was on, I felt David went too far," he shared.
Douglas went on to recall how Letterman had played "without warning" a TV commercial that his actress mother, Diana Dill, had appeared in.
"(Letterman) started grilling me about it. It felt like he was making fun of my mother," the 82-year-old continued. "(That appearance) left me feeling like he had a real nasty sense of humour... After that, whenever the producers of the show requested to have me back on, I always refused. I said no for 18 straight years. Dave wrote me personal letters to apologise, but my feelings didn't change. He had crossed a line."
However, Douglas decided to "bury the hatchet" and announce that he was battling advanced tongue cancer during an interview on the Late Show with David Letterman while promoting his movie Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps in 2010.
