President Donald Trump on Thursday said he is following the upcoming Brazilian election “very closely,” referring to Brazil as a “very important" country. "The people of Brazil are fantastic people,” he told reporters outside the White House. “It’s a very important election.”
The U.S. State Department later announced the suspension of its consular services in Brazil ahead of the election taking place on Sunday, citing unspecified security concerns. “U.S. citizens seeking emergency ****** istance during this time should not come to the Embassy, the Consulates, or other U.S. diplomatic facilities,” the security alert advised.

Brazilians are heading to the polls for a set of federal elections spanning congressional and gubernatorial races, alongside the first round of the presidential election votes. It’s set to be a decisive moment for Latin America’s largest nation, as the region has seen a shift toward the right in recent years. An Oct. 25 runoff is expected, as polls show a tight contest between leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and far-right Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was convicted last year for plotting a coup to overturn his 2022 election loss. Trump led the conservative voices denouncing the conviction, referring to the trial as a “witch hunt.”
While Trump has acknowledged his active interest as Brazil votes on its political future, there are concerns he could be too involved. Trump and his Administration have been accused of attempting to interfere with the high-stakes overseas election.

For the past couple of decades, the so-called "American Dream" has followed a pretty linear pathway. You finish high school, go to a four-year university, and then graduate straight into a corporate office that comes with a slick 401(k).
That bachelor's degree was the golden ticket that made everything possible, and your parents probably told you that earning a diploma was critical to your success, right? Well, new labor market data has turned that decades-old playbook upside down.

Oil markets appear to have reached the inflection point that many ***** ysts had predicted weeks ago as the Middle East conflict re-escalated with no diplomatic push in sight and global inventories continue to slump.
Oil prices are back above $100 per barrel, lifting diesel and gasoline prices, including in the United States.
The Trump Administration is looking to downplay the price spikes it sees as only temporary. Prices would "drop like a rock" when the Iran war ends, U.S. President Donald Trump said, but he appears to have acknowledged that there may be no respite before the mid-term elections in early November.
Meanwhile, the record-high diesel prices and the highest gasoline prices for this time of year on record could do damage to the economy and consumer spending.
On Tuesday evening, the U.S. average diesel price hit $6.301 per gallon while gasoline prices jumped to an average of $4.355 per gallon, according to GasBuddy data.

Former US CIA director David Petraeus was at a Ukrainian train station at the very moment a Russian drone struck a passenger train on Sunday, shortly after a diplomatic train carrying former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other foreign dignitaries had passed through.
Kyiv framed the attack as evidence of the increased threat Russia's Vladimir Putin poses to Europe, with Ukraine's rail operator saying it was "quite likely" a targeted attack.
The diplomatic train carrying Johnson, European security officials and other former leaders from Kyiv to Poland had made an early departure from Yahodyn station –– about two kilometers (1.2 miles) from the Polish border –– due to the "constant threat of Russian strikes," said Ukrainian Railways. It had already crossed into Poland by the time of the attack.
Petraeus was traveling on a separate train which was still at Yahodyn station, a Ukrainian Railways statement said. CNN has reached out to Petraeus for comment.
The rail operator said that while it was still clarifying details, it is "quite likely" that the Russian drone could have deliberately targeted the officials' train.

The 2026 Emmys are kicking off awards season, and all eyes are on Emmy-nominated couple Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell, who stepped out on the red carpet together on September 14.
This year has truly been the Year of Matthew Rhys, who is doubly nominated for his lead performances in Widow's Bay and The Beast in Me. Russell is also nominated for her lead role in The Diplomat. As the famously private duo cheers each other on from the audience, hoping to take home more than one award tonight, Swooon's taking a deep dive into the wild story of how they went public with their relationship, all about their kids, and more.
Russell and Rhys started dating in 2013 after meeting on the set of The Americans. They played married Russian spies. For a while, Russell and Rhys kept their relationship under wraps until their connection was outed by the NYPD.
During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Rhys revealed that his and Russell's relationship was revealed to the public after a burglar broke into his apartment. "We were together in an apartment, and she woke me up and said, 'I think there's someone in the apartment,'" Rhys explained. "And I said, 'There's no one in the apartment.' And then I heard someone saying something, and I went, 'Oh, there's someone in the apartment!'" Later, the NYPD returned what was stolen from the duo — while they were on set. From then on, the jig was up.
Despite being long-term partners, Russell and Rhys are not married.

HAVANA, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Cuba's top diplomat said on Monday there are no talks underway with the United States, nor were there ‌any plans for future negotiations, amid a "genocidal" blockade that Cuba says has ‌cost the island nation over $8 billion in economic damages in the last year.
"There are no negotiations or agendas, although a willingness to stay in contact remains despite the lack of progress," Cuba's foreign minister, Bruno Rodriguez, told reporters at a press conference in Havana.
Rodriguez said that damages caused by the decades-old U.S. trade embargo against Cuba had jumped 7 percent in ‌2025 versus the previous year, to $8.1 billion.
Cuba's foreign minister said the financial hit to Cuba`s economy would balloon in the first months of 2026, after the Trump administration imposed an oil blockade on the island that has all but decimated output and led to nationwide blackouts that now span days.

TAIPEI, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Taiwan flexed its chip diplomacy muscles at a major trade show last week, portraying itself as a democratic and reliable supplier for the AI revolution, while signalling ‌a willingness to share the benefits of its semiconductor prowess with like-minded partners.
Home to companies like TSMC whose ‌chips power AI applications, diplomatically isolated Taiwan has long sought to leverage its tech prowess to garner international support, something Beijing routinely seeks to block saying the island is merely one of its provinces.
But Taiwan also faces pressure from the United States, its most important international backer and arms supplier, to shift more chip manufacturing there. That comes as TSMC is investing $265 billion in factories in the state of Arizona.
President Lai Ching-te, who, unusually, spoke at two separate events on the same day at the SEMICON Taiwan trade show, said Taiwanese companies were ‌expanding globally to "let resilience create shared prosperity", and that the island's chip strength was based on democracy and rule of law.

DUBAI, Sept 6 (Reuters) - Iran said it will step up efforts to tackle problems created by the U.S. sanctions that are crippling its economy, while a senior Iranian official warned of a "painful response" if it comes under further attack.
Six months after U.S.-Israeli strikes against Iran, the war appears to be at a stalemate. A preliminary ceasefire accord ‌reached in June has unravelled and little progress has been made in diplomatic efforts to get the peace process back on track.
After a pause in military action for much of ‌August, ******* -for-tat strikes have resumed with U.S. Central Command saying it hit three Iranian tankers on Saturday after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched ballistic missiles at two U.S. Navy ships.
Following the attacks, Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said on Sunday that the U.S. should understand that the rules of the game in the war against Iran have changed "before it is too late".
"From now on, any attack against Iran's interests and security will receive a faster, heavier and more painful response," he said in a speech published on his Telegram channel.

Western Michigan coach Lance Taylor believes the clock was at zero when his team forced Michigan's Hail Mary to fall incomplete.
The No. 16 Wolverines got a second chance at a Hail Mary after officials controversially added a second back onto the clock and made the most of that second when JJ Buchanan caught the pass from Bryce Underwood for a 13-12 win.
WMU appeared to have escaped with a 12-7 upset win after Underwood's pass didn't touch a WMU player who had stepped out of bounds until there was no time remaining on the clock. However, officials ruled after a replay review that there was, somehow, still one second remaining.
After the game, Taylor was asked in his news conference about the play. He was diplomatic and said that it was also an opportunity for his defense.
"I have not seen the clip, several people have mentioned it to me that the game was over. I think one, [MAC commissioner John Steinbrecher] has already reached out. Normally he handles those type of situations and reviews. I thought that the crew tonight did a really nice job handling multiple close calls and review situations. We had several where the spot was questioned and reviewed and those calls went our way the the review went our way. So, listen, I'll let our commissioner and those guys handle it.

Naomi Osaka had her first round match at the US Open interrupted by influencers in the crowd. The tournament has seen an influx of influencers this year and the reaction has not been mixed as people just seem generally annoyed by their disruptions.
Osaka was asked about the influencers during a press conference following her round two victory. She noted that the umpire had "told everyone to be quiet more than I've ever heard an umpire tell a crowd to be quiet." And in her first round match she mostly ignored the noise, but there was a moment when people were shouting.
Osaka was diplomatic, pointing out that they could help grow the game, but wished they better followed the etiquette of the sport.

"I think obviously if you come to a sporting event, you have to respect the sport," Osaka said. "And I feel like it's common courtesy to read up on the sport, especially the etiquette. I feel like it could be a good thing for people to make the sport of tennis popular to their specific audience, but I think it has to be managed a lot better, especially in the situation like my first-round match. Overall, I think there are huge positives. I'm not the one to… you want people to continue to grow the sport."

Most would probably agree with this next sentiment. The Baltimore Ravens can state whatever they want publicly. Everyone knows they didn't simply bring in Jake Moody to take a look at another leg.
Executive vice president and general manager Eric DeCosta spoke with media members on Wednesday for the first time since Baltimore introduced its initial 53-man roster. As expected, everything was on the table for discussion. He mentioned the inquiries the organization received about Joe ****** nano's services. The conversation shifted to a possible Lamar Jackson extension, which the GM said he'd like to have done by March.
He also addressed another elephant in the room, the added kicker. Except this time, the answer sounded less diplomatic and closer to what most Ravens would probably say had they been given the microphone.
Per Baltimore's GM, the goal was to indeed create competition at kicker as the regular season approaches. While the Ravens have publicly supported Tyler Loop throughout the summer, as they should, DeCosta made it clear the organization felt compelled to explore another option.
"We have got to make kicks. [This] gives us a fresh set of legs to look at, evaluate, compare, [and] see how it all works out. In the end, it is a performance business, right? It starts with me. We have got to do our job."

(By Oil & Gas 360) – Month Ending: August 2026 – August was the month energy markets began treating geopolitical disruption less like a temporary shock and more like a structural part of the investment landscape. The Iran conflict remained the dominant force running through oil prices, tanker markets, LNG flows, sanctions policy, and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Yet one of the more revealing developments was how quickly commodity markets learned to absorb the uncertainty. Oil could rally on renewed fighting, fall on hopes for diplomacy, and then trade lower even as physical shipping constraints remained very real.
The industry's response told a different story. Producers, midstream companies, and governments continued committing capital to natural gas, new drilling inventory, offshore exploration, pipelines, ports, automation, and alternative supply routes. August was therefore not simply a month defined by war or volatile crude prices. It was a month that exposed how deeply intertwined energy security, infrastructure, technology, and access to resources are becoming.
The Iran conflict remained the defining energy story of August. Brent repeatedly moved in response to developments surrounding fighting and diplomacy, while commodity vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz fell to a three-month low. Reports that nearly half of global oil flows originated in or moved through conflict-affected regions underscored just how exposed the world's energy system had become to geopolitical instability.
The consequences extended well beyond crude prices. VLCC tanker rates reportedly climbed as high as $650,000 per day, Qatar suffered a severe collapse in LNG exports, and Gulf producers accelerated investment in pipelines and ports capable of reducing dependence on vulnerable maritime corridors.

BRUSSELS/BERLIN, Sept 2 (Reuters) - European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen vowed on Wednesday to increase pressure on Russia, including with new sanctions, after an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany that she said showed Moscow's growing "recklessness".
Airport workers last month found a drone ‌laden with explosives and a detonator at the airport, an important civilian freight and NATO logistics hub in eastern Germany that is also a base for ‌several giant Ukrainian Antonov An-124 cargo planes.
Germany blamed Moscow for the attack, characterising it as part of hybrid warfare meant to intimidate and cause divisions in countries that have rallied around Ukraine since Russia's 2022 invasion.
Russia denies involvement. It says it will respond to what its foreign ministry spokesperson called "anti-Russian action", and summoned Germany's top diplomat in Moscow.

Right now there are a few players who were signed by NFL teams that are now attempting to exploit what they see as a loophole and return to play college football. A lot of NFL and college coaches and front office people have been asked about it and many of them have some strong opinions. Most notably Colts GM Chris Ballard who said plainly that he thinks it's the "stupidest s--t I've ever heard".
Tuesday it was Raiders GM John Spytek and ****** istant GM Brian Stark's turn in front of the media. The subject came up to them. Stark answered first and attempted to be diplomatic about it before backing away from it.
"Yeah, I mean, I can't fault the players for if it's permissible and that's available to them," said Stark. "I haven'treally thought much about it to be honest with you. We've been pretty busy here the last few weeks, so Ihaven't put too much thought into it. But if it's available to them, if that's an option, it's hard to fault themfor doing it. But that's about all I got on that."
After that it was Spytek's turn and he had the perfect response -- "I'm not giving you any Chris Ballard quotes."
The line drew big laughs from Stark and the room full of media. Spytek was, of course, referring to Ballard's line about how stupid he thinks it is. Ballard went further even, adding "Your entire life, you fight to get up to the NFL. But now we're gonna go back? OK! That makes a lot of freakin' sense."

Dolly Parton was a lot of things - a country musician, a philanthropist, an actress, a storyteller and a businesswoman. One thing she never was, however, was a politician.
But don't think it's because no one asked her. In 1999, during an appearance on the talk show Prime Time Country!, the singer was asked by a young woman in the audience if she would ever run for office.
Dolly demurred, with her characteristic razor-sharp wit. "I think of myself more as a diplomat. That's the kind of people who tell you to go to ****** in such a way you look forward to the trip."
It's something she'd had to do many times over a career that spanned decades and genres. With a fanbase that included grandmas and Gen-Zers, Republicans and Democrats, drag queens and evangelicals, Parton was a kind of unicorn in America's polarised society.
"She is the one person who straddles political divides… the so-called culture wars," said Sarah Phillips, who teaches an Anthropology of Dolly Parton course at Indiana University - and still finds it hard to speak about the singer in the past tense. The professor "curled into a ball" in her office and "just sobbed" upon hearing of the death.

Reuters reported on August 14, 2026, that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has trained its own large language model specifically for the China market, developed in partnership with and trained with support from Alibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE:BABA), according to three people familiar with the matter. It is a departure from Apple's approach of relying on third-party Chinese AI models.
Apple has been losing ground in China's AI-equipped smartphone market to domestic rivals like Huawei. Hence, a China-specific model of its own would give Apple far more control than simply plugging into a partner's AI service.
That raises the real question: is this proprietary model a genuine technological leap for Apple in China, or just a more controlled version of the same dependence on local partners it already had?
A self-trained, China-tailored model would make Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) the first foreign company approved by Beijing to offer a proprietary AI model in the country, notable given the trade and diplomatic rift between the US and China over AI. Apple Intelligence is expected to launch in China in the coming months following an iOS update, after the Cyberspace Administration of China registered Apple's generative AI service in July 2026. It cleared a regulatory process that took roughly a year and required co-developing features with both Alibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE:BABA) and Baidu. That dual-track approach gives Apple a path through regulatory hurdles that have largely blocked other US tech firms in China. China remains critical to Apple's revenue, and the absence of AI features on Chinese iPhones has been cited as a factor pushing consumers toward domestic brands with built-in AI ***** istants.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has already reversed course once on how it plans to reach Chinese users: it published a Chinese-language guide just days earlier explaining how Mac users could connect Alibaba's Qwen to Siri and Writing Tools, then deleted that guide without explanation. Neither Apple nor Alibaba has confirmed the new self-trained model publicly, and it remains unclear what role it will play alongside the third-party Chinese models Apple already committed to using. The overall strategy has taken roughly a year and a half to reach this point since the Alibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE:BABA) partnership was first confirmed in February 2025. It shows how contested Apple's path to a China AI launch has been.

Oil has been one of the stranger stories in markets this year. Crude topped $114 a barrel in April when the Iran conflict was at its worst, then retreated sharply once diplomacy moved in.
It has been climbing again since early July, up roughly 30% from that trough. Brent is now between $91 and $93 a barrel and has gained 13% in the past two weeks alone.
That is the backdrop for what Morgan Stanley's chief equity strategist said on Aug. 24. It is worth reading before it gets buried under the next data release.
Michael Wilson, Morgan Stanley's chief U.S. equity strategist, said a renewed oil spike is the single biggest near-term threat to American equities, Bloomberg reported.
His note was blunt. "Crude is the near-term risk, and it's asymmetric," Wilson wrote. Stocks get hurt more by a crude spike than they benefit from a crude dip. That is not a new observation. He first laid it out in a March 2026 note. It lands differently now that oil has been moving the way it has.

A Harvard working paper tracking 62 million workers across 285,000 U.S. firms found that companies adopting generative AI reduced junior employment by about 9% within six quarters.
This is based on the updated May 2026 version of the paper, while senior employment held steady. Seyed Mahdi Hosseini Maasoum and Guy Lichtinger, the paper's authors, describe the pattern as "seniority-biased technological change."
Morgan Housel, bestselling author of The Psychology of Money, raised this concern on The Tetr Podcast, telling host Pratham Mittal he would "move mountains" to send his children to a good college.
But Housel also flagged a problem that no tuition check can solve: AI is eliminating the junior positions where graduates have always learned how to work.
For parents investing in college savings plans, that gap between the diploma and the career it used to unlock is widening.

NEW DELHI, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to attend next month's BRICS summit in New Delhi with a large delegation, three sources said, ‌in what would be his first visit in seven years and a fresh sign of a ‌thaw between the rivals.
India is hosting the September 12 to 13 summit, where Xi's presence would be watched less for the BRICS agenda than for what it signals about Beijing and New Delhi's efforts to stabilise relations after deadly border clashes in 2020.
"Chinese officials are busy finalising hotels and security protocols," one of the Indian sources with direct knowledge told Reuters.
Last year, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited China for the first time in seven years, but the relationship has only ‌improved gradually. More recently, a fresh border-related dispute triggered sharp diplomatic exchanges between the two sides.

The U.S. president's abrupt decision to cut back military drills with South ‌Korea last week, which he described as hostile to Pyongyang, has reinforced fears that Trump's unpredictability could strain alliances that have long maintained peace in the region, government officials and security experts said.
Japan worries it ‌too could find itself in Trump's cross-hairs as it embarks on thorny security negotiations; Taiwan is warily watching an upcoming summit between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping; and India is growing less certain of its place in Washington's strategic calculus.
"The decision will certainly fuel growing doubts in the region about U.S. security commitments," said Jeremy Chan, a senior ****** yst with political risk consultancy Eurasia Group and former U.S. diplomat in ****** an and China.

1533 ET – Oil futures end the week higher with no progress made toward resolving the U.S.-Iran conflict, and the U.S. planning to tighten the economic squeeze on Iran rather than renew major military action. While geopolitics remain the main driver of oil prices, “the continuation of tensions alone is no longer creating the same price shock as before,” Linh Tran of XS.com says in a note. “The market may now need a more significant escalation to materially change expectations for Middle East supply.” WTI settles up 0.3% at $87.06for a 6.9% weekly gain. Brent rises 0.7% to $94.39 a barrel, up 6.6% on the week. (anthony.harrupwsj.com)
0920 ET – Crude oil futures are little changed in early U.S. trading and on track for weekly gains amid market expectations of an extended standoff in the Persian Gulf between the U.S. and Iran. Yesterday’s stronger-than-expected WTI September expiration “now provides an easy upside target to the October contract,” Ritterbusch & ****** ociates says in a note. The continued virtual closure of the Strait of Hormuz and stalled diplomatic efforts to reopen it support the bullish view, the firm says. “Iran remains dug in while the U.S. has shifted strategy from a bombing campaign to economic isolation that may or may not spur concessions from Iran.” WTI is off 0.1% at $86.76 a barrel and Brent is 0.1% higher at $93.87.
