Global equities ended last week little changed in local currency and up 0.6% in sterling terms. This continued the choppy pattern of recent weeks with markets currently down 1.5-2% from their peak in early June. The US underperformed with a gain of 0.3% in sterling terms while the UK and emerging markets were both up around 1.3%.
Meanwhile, government bonds in the US and UK both lost 0.5% with yields re-testing their highs in early May. 10-year UK gilt yields tested 5.1% while US yields reached 4.7%, before retreating a bit.
The war with Iran was centre stage with renewed attacks by both sides and Trump once again upping his threats. The new ingredient this time was that concerns were not limited to the Strait of Hormuz but extended to the Bab El Mandeb Strait with the Houthis exchanging blows with Saudi Arabia and threatening to close the waterway.
The importance of this new chokepoint is two-fold. First, it threatens Saudi's ability to divert via its pipeline a good part of its oil production to the Red Sea rather than the Strait of Hormuz. Second, it poses a threat to container traffic more generally which use the Suez Canal to avoid a long and costly diversion around the African coast.
Oil duly moved back up to $100 per barrel mid-week from a low of close to $70pb all of three weeks ago. But it is back down to $88pb this morning as negotiations between the US and Iran started up once again over the weekend, easing fears of a major escalation. However, this morning, Iran said it is not seeking new peace talks, so the confusion continues.
Even so, the fact remains that Trump appears to have chickened out yet again – be it because the hike in oil prices has pushed US gasoline prices back above $4 per gallon, the rise in US Treasury yields has caused concerns or because, as has been reported, the US lacks the necessary munitions.

Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) on Sunday said President Trump likes the daily strikes on Iran, which paused going into the weekend after nearly two straight weeks of attacks on Iranian infrastructure.
"I think we ought to continue the blockade and starve them out. I think we ought to bomb Pickaxe Mountain and try to reach what's underneath it, " Kennedy told CBS News's Margaret Brennan during his appearance on "Face the Nation."
"The president likes the daily attacks," Kennedy added. "He believes that sometimes you have to kill a few chickens to scare the monkeys."
Kennedy compared Iran's leaders to American serial killer Son of Sam and cult leader Charles Manson, calling them "more than mildly insane." But he added that the U.S. should not "just cut and run."
"If we can stand the pain of the rising cost of energy, we need to stay the course," he said. "At least for a few more months. I also don't think we need to send in troops. That's my opinion, for what it's worth."

WORCESTER — The Chicken Farmer has made his way to the Canal District.
On Tuesday, the Boston Red Sox promoted pitcher Blake Wehunt to Triple-A Worcester.
The 25-year-old righty, who was given the nickname of the "Chicken Farmer" since his family owns a chicken farm in Georgia, made his Triple-A debut a day later when the WooSox played the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Polar Park.
"It's kind of a cool perspective to be here," Wehunt told the T&G. The right-hander, with a slight southern drawl, was originally scheduled to pitch Tuesday before the WooSox game was postponed due to rain.
"Obviously, I'm grateful for the chance to be here and just ready to get to work."

Perdue Farms and the Baltimore Ravens have launched a multi-year partnership that will bring Perdue products to Ravens facilities and game-day operations while supporting hunger-relief efforts across Maryland.
The companies announced the agreement July 20 at the Maryland Food Bank, according to a community announcement. As part of the kickoff, leaders from Perdue Farms and the Ravens donated nearly 43,000 pounds of chicken, equivalent to 35,600 meals, and volunteered with Maryland Food Bank staff.
Under the agreement, Perdue becomes the Official Chicken of the Baltimore Ravens beginning with the upcoming NFL season.
“For more than a century, Perdue has proudly called Maryland home, and we've always believed food has the power to bring people together,” Chris Perdue, senior vice president of marketing at Perdue, said in a statement. “We've always believed food has the power to bring people together. Nichirei has confirmed a cyberattack disrupted parts of its frozen-food and logistics operations this week, with the ****** anese food group also warning personal information may have been exposed.
In a statement today, the Tokyo-listed company encountered "system failures" on Monday (13 July), prompting it to set up "an emergency response headquarters" and investigate the cause.
"As a result of the investigation, the company confirmed that its servers had been subject to a cyberattack," Nichirei said.
The owner of Honkaku-Itame Cha-Han fried rice and ****** anese-style deep-fried chicken brand Toku-kara said it would not disclose further details "to prevent further potential damage".

OK. Things at this point are getting a little uncomfortable. One would think that the Indianapolis Colts had learned their lesson when it comes to Jonathan Taylor after that disastrous offseason three years ago, but it looks like we are headed for a rinse and repeat cycle. The rumor mill is picking up and speculation is running wild about what the Colts will do with Taylor. Trade destinations are being proposed and perceived compensation put into the ether. Could the Colts really make such a move?
In short, why not? Everyone is expendable. If the Colts are willing to move on from Peyton Manning, absolutely no one is safe. Taylor is in the last year of his deal and running backs don't normally get better at this point. It's a game of chicken. At some point he will hit the wall, and Taylor is hoping he gets another payday before that point. The Colts are hopeful they don't get stuck holding the bag. Sure, Daniel Jones going down had a huge impact, but Taylor disappeared over the back half of 2025. This might be the highest his value reaches.
What is that value? Speculation has it at a third-round pick. That doesn't seem like enough juice for the squeeze. Running back is a devalued position, but look at what he did the first half of the year. He carried the team at times. Although last year was a mixed bag, it appears he has more in the tank. Letting one of your best players go for a third-round pick seems ill-advised if you truly want to be competitive this year. If the Colts make this move, there could be instant regret watching Taylor run roughshod over the rest of the NFL in a different jersey.
The Colts can do anything they want. If they find a trade partner and feel the return is satisfactory, that is their call. That doesn't mean it would be a wise decision. Jonathan Taylor looks like he has another contract in him. Extend him for three years with an option in the third year. He is the best the Colts have on the roster. Paying Jones and Pierce big bucks to send Taylor away seems counterintuitive. Give Taylor one last ride and bet he will reward the decision.

After an 11-year run, results from 16,464 respondents knocked the chicken chain from its coveted spot in favor of sandwich shop Jersey Mike's, which was commended for its freshness, food variety and value. Securing an ACSI score of 84 out of 100, Jersey Mike's edged Chick-fil-A out by one point after adding 238 net new locations in 2025 and clearing $4.2 billion in sales.
"The U.S. restaurant industry faced difficulties in 2025, with total sales struggling to keep pace with inflation," said the report published Tuesday, June 16. "In a market defined by trade-offs, customers are placing greater emphasis on consistency, reliability, and perceived value as opposed to just price. Brands that deliver a consistently enjoyable experience are gaining ground."

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President JD Vance has added a chicken coop to his residence at the U.S. Naval Observatory, along with a dozen baby chicks whose new henhouse is designed to look like the Victorian home where the second family lives.
The coop, which features a round turret and faux slate roof, was donated by Carolina Coops, a North Carolina company that advertises "premium" coops that have amassed a social media following. The coop was custom-built for the residence and completed May 29, the company's owner and founder said.
"It's something I thought was amazing to do for this country," Matthew DuBoise said in an interview. "It's a place of history and a place of significance."
The coop was built without taxpayer money, according to a person familiar with the project who spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly. The residence hosted a family event over the weekend where local 4-H students taught other kids about the newly installed coup, the person said.
Vice presidents since 1977 have lived on the grounds of the 72-acre Naval Observatory, and many have left their own imprint on the property. Joe Biden added a heritage garden, Mike Pence's wife, Karen, contributed beehives, and Kamala Harris' updates included pink wallpaper in the house's library. A heated swimming pool on the property was added by Dan Quayle in 1991.
