Nine days from now, NFL teams will need to cut their rosters down from 90 players to 53 ahead of the regular season. That represents the most difficult days for head coaches and general managers around the league.
For the Carolina Panthers, one of the toughest decisions will be who to carry at tight end, where they've long had one of the worst units in the league. The addition of veteran Darren Waller gives the toom some hope, but also means somebody else will probbaly wind up on the chopping block.
According to a new initial 53-man roster projection from Joe Person at The Athletic, 2024 fourth-round draft pick Ja'Tavion Sanders is going to be the odd man out at tight end. Person wrties:
Waller was a low-risk signing with the potential for a high return. ***** uming he's healthy, he's on the 53. Waller, who turns 34 in September, tore his quad during training camp in Miami last year. That injury — and two others that followed — came after he'd been out of football for a year. But Canales said Waller showed up this week in "phenomenal shape." Waller's skill set is similar to that of Sanders, who could be the odd man out. Canales called Franks one of the top special teams players in the league, and the former QB has improved as a receiver.
It's a shame to waste an early Day 3 pick after just two seasons, but it's also hard to make a case that anybody else shouldn't make the roster over Sanders at this spot.

GAINESVILLE, FL — Florida soccer outlasted Coastal Carolina, 3-2, on Thursday night to even up their record to 1-1.
In a game that had a two-hour rain delay, the Gators came out firing on all cylinders, taking a 2-0 lead in the first half of play.
Senior forward Kyra Taylor led the way with two first-half goals in her home debut for the program. Katie Johnston also contributed with a goal in the second half to put the team up 3-2 in the 76th minute to seize control of the match.
Florida was more aggressive and controlled the pace with 19 shots, 13 of them coming on goal, compared to Coastal's five shots, three of them on goal. The program also had 11 more fouls than Coastal.
Thursday's win also marks the first win under head coach Nick Zimmerman. The new head coach spoke on the team's performance in the one-score victory.

As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle prepare to take up residency again in the U.K. six years after giving up their royal roles, Markle will be serving up her fashion influence and continue running her brand, As Ever.

While millions around the globe are chiming in about what their surprise decision could mean to the modern monarchy, others speculated about how commercial prospects may have played into their decision to relocate with their two children Archie, 7, and Lillibet, 5. Much has happened since Princess Diana and King Charles III's younger son lost his honorary military and royal patronage appointments in 2021.

The prince spelled out his many grievances with his kin in his memoir "Spare," and the pair sounded off in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. Harry has also openly criticized his home country for not providing his family of four with security. As for how that will be handled in a few weeks upon their return, Prime Minister Andy Burnham described that as "a private matter."

Although King Charles III and Queen Camilla were reunited with Harry's two children earlier this month at the monarch's private country estate Highgrove House, Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, were not there. The strained relations between Harry and his brother continue to be scrutinized on social media and in traditional media.

David Haigh, founder and chief executive officer of the independent brand evaluation consultancy firm Brand Finance, said, "My take is they clearly haven't succeeded in America like they thought they would."

Acknowledging how Harry and Markle each have critics and loyalists, Haigh said that Harry is "much more highly regarded in the U.K. than Markle is. And the dynamic will shift much more in his favor."

To that point, the latest YouGov public opinion poll of Harry gives him a 27 percent popularity ranking and Markle an 18 percent rating. But Markle has a track record for boosting designers' sales by wearing their label. She sported 16 Australian labels during a trip Down Under in April. That resulted in a total of $51.6 million in media impact value over a four-day stretch, according to Launchmetrics.

Carolina Herrera, Heidi Merrick, Dior, Valentino, Mackage, Emilia Wickstead, Victoria Beard, Reformation, Jason Wu and Anine Bing are among the many brands that 45-year-old Markle has rotated into her wardrobe. In addition to launching the lifestyle brand As Ever in the spring of last year, the former "Suits" actress and her husband were the executive producers for the documentary "Cookie Queens" about American Girl Scouts' cookie selling.
Meghan Markle at the Balenciaga spring 2026 show.
Last month, she earned an Emmy nomination for her Netflix lifestyle series "With Love, Meghan." In September 2020, the husband-and-wife team's Archewell Productions secured a multiyear deal with Netflix, which was reportedly in the $60 million to $100 million range.

The Jacksonville Jaguars host the Carolina Panthers in Week 2 of the preseason, and it presents another opportunity for several roster hopefuls to make a push.
A player's performance in the preseason can carry more weight in the overall evaluation process, given the environment.
These seven players, who are fringe roster candidates, are hoping to give their stock a boost in this contest.
Taylor impressed in the preseason opener. However, he is in a crowded position group. Can Taylor's play force the Jaguars to roster a fourth running back?
Brenton Strange, Nate Boerkircher, and Tanner Koziol make up the top three spots on the depth chart. That potentially leaves one roster spot still available for either Morris or Long.

FR8 Solutions and 22 independent drivers have reached a settlement in a federal civil RICO lawsuit. The drivers accused the company of altering rate sheets and hiding revenue from hauled loads. On July 28, a Florida court dismissed the case with prejudice. The court filings do not disclose the settlement's financial terms.
Plaintiffs and defendants filed a joint notice of settlement on July 27. They told the court they had resolved the matter and were finalizing their agreement. Judge Wendy Berger closed the case the following day. Her order allows either side 60 days to request a final order or reopen proceedings.
FR8 and the drivers worked under agreements that promised drivers 88% of each load's linehaul rate. The complaint claims company records showed smaller rates than FR8 actually received. Drivers claimed FR8 supplied settlement statements and dispatch documents that understated the company's revenue. The lawsuit says those documents reduced their percentage-based payment on individual loads.
One disputed shipment ran from Wood Dale, Illinois, to Gaffney, South Carolina. FR8's system showed a $2,400 rate, while the complaint claims FR8 received $2,500. Another shipment ran from Del Rio, Texas, to Kansas City, Kansas. For that move, the drivers claim FR8 showed $8,000 but received $15,000.
The $7,000 difference represented $6,160 under the drivers claimed 88% formula. Drivers also identified Ascent On-Demand, Active On-Demand and Landstar in disputed transactions. They claimed another company operator revealed different rates during June 2023. FR8 then ended their contracts and locked them out of its mobile application, the lawsuit states.

Neutrogena shared a statement on Thursday addressing Hayden Panettiere's death, following days of backlash. In the wake of her death, many fans resurfaced comments Panettiere had made claiming the skincare company fired her in 2015 for speaking out about postpartum depression.
"For more than a decade, Hayden was a valued member of our Neutrogena community. We are proud to have partnered with her and understand that we made her feel unsupported during a very difficult time. This is not what Neutrogena stands for or who we want to be," the company wrote on social media.
"Hayden's courage in sharing her challenges helped inspire important conversations and awareness. We are making a significant investment to a long-standing community health partner to help give more women access to the support they need, including care for postpartum depression," Neutrogena wrote. The company said it would share more details "when plans are in place."
"Out of respect for Hayden's family and loved ones, we did not want to speak out so soon following her passing. Everyone at Neutrogena extends their deepest condolences to Hayden's family and all who loved her," the statement added.

The North Carolina Tar Heels finally have their 2026 starting quarterback, with Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards Jr. getting the nod.
Edwards is a high-risk play, given an injury that kept him out most of 2025, but he is also UNC's most experienced option under center. Edwards previously started all of 2024 for Maryland, while Texas A&M transfer Miles O'Neill has no starts through two seasons.
With Edwards now the guy, how does he stack up against the other ACC gunslingers? In USA TODAY Sports' rankings of all 17 ACC quarterbacks, Edwards lands 16th, ahead of just Boston College's Mason McKenzie.
"The former Wisconsin Badger never got the chance to show what he could do in Madison, as his 2025 season was hampered by a knee injury," Eddie Timanus writes. "He did have some success at his prior stop at Maryland, but his running ability was a big part of his game. Whether he can rescue the Bill Belichick experiment in Chapel Hill remains to be seen."
During his 2024 campaign as the Terrapins' starter, Edwards completed 273 passes for 2,881 yards and 15 touchdowns, while adding 15 rushing yards and five additional scores. In his first collegiate start the season prior, Edwards earned Music City Bowl MVP honors, leading Maryland that year with seven rushing touchdowns.

While more attention has been given to edge rusher Jaelan Phillips, perhaps the most important signing the Carolina Panthers made this offseason was inside linebacker Devin Lloyd.
Lloyd is coming off a breakout season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he notched career-highs in interceptions (five) and pressures (21). His efforts would earn him the first Pro Bowl selection of his career and help the Jags to an AFC South championship.
The former first-round pick will be under a microscope this week, as his current team faces his former one in a preseason matchup on Friday night in Jacksonville. His new teammates have taken notice of his dedication to the game, including cornerback Jaycee Horn—who asked Lloyd what he does outside of football.
And per ESPN's Mike Kaye, Horn received a pretty predictable answer:
"I was talking to him ... last week and I was like, 'Bro, what do you do outside of here?' cause he strikes me as a guy that is all football," Pro Bowl cornerback Jaycee Horn said. "And he's like, 'Nothing.'"

Just as the Jacksonville Jaguars' offense did in last week's joint practice with the Saints, Trevor Lawrence and Co. were again successful in the red zone against the Panthers in Wednesday's practice.
At one point during the practice, John Shipley of Jaguars on SI noted that Lawrence threw touchdown passes on three consecutive plays. Shipley added that Carolina had "some real issues" defending the Jaguars' tight ends in this part of the field.
In Year 1 under Liam Coen, the Jaguars' offense was quite successful in the red area, particularly down the stretch, and that has seemed to carry over into this year's training camp.
"I thought we were pretty good the back half of the year in the red zone," Coen said. "I think we finished in the top five in the NFL. Like he made a couple off schedule throws and that's what I would attribute a lot of it to, to be honest, is when we got better in the red zone last year was open receivers in the red zone."
With less ***** e to operate in a condensed part of the field, passing the ball in the red zone can be challenging. So Lawrence's ability to buy time and extend plays has been a key factor in Jacksonville's red zone surge.

An offseason vision for the Jacksonville Jaguars' offense seems to be coming to life in training camp.
Back in April, the Jaguars utilized their second-round selection on tight end Nate Boerkircher -- a pick that was scrutinized by many ******* ysts. Jacksonville then selected tight end Tanner Koziol in the fifth round.
Both players, however, have acclimated quickly to Liam Coen's offense, including in Wednesday's joint practice with Carolina.
"I think they've grown for sure," Coen said after practice. "Tanner being a quasi receiver in college was something that we were excited about."
Coen also mentioned the physicality that Boerkircher brings to the Jaguars' offense.

This NBA offseason has been an unforgettable one. Both Jaylen Brown and Giannis Antetokounmpo have been traded. LeBron James is on a new team. So much has happened. While there can only be one NBA champion each season, there are a handful of teams that believe they are best suited for the job. On the other end of that equation are the teams who know they don't have what it takes to win the championship, and that's ok.
Each season, rosters around the NBA change drastically. Players get traded, they sign to a new team, or get drafted. Some teams make good moves, some make bad. Some make a lot, some make none. It all depends on the state of your team. Whether it looks like a good move or a bad move, only time can tell. It happens every year when teams and fans get ahead of themselves, thinking they are better than they truly are.
So while some teams may fit in that boat, let's take a look at teams that seem to be heading in the right direction going into the 2026-27 season.

The Chicago Bulls have finally begun trending in the right direction, and it all started at the draft lottery. While the Bulls were projected to have around the 9th pick in the 2026 draft, they jumped all the way to the fourth spot and selected Caleb Wilson. A very fortunate beginning to new General Manager Bryson Graham's career. Wilson is exactly what the Bulls needed and what most teams search for. A young player who has star potential that they can build around. In summer league, Wilson looked extremely polished. He is super athletic, proved he can stretch the floor, and truthfully did everything you could ask for in a 20-year-old.

Jacksonville Jaguars' running back Bhayshul Tuten was one of the standout performers in the team's joint practice with the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday.
John Shipley of Jaguars on SI called this the "best practice" that Tuten has ever had with the Jaguars.
Up to this point, Shipley noted that Tuten had been solid throughout training camp. The difference, however, on Wednesday, Tuten flashed more of his playmaking potential.
Coming out of Virginia Tech in 2025, Tuten brought speed to the Jaguars' backfield and an impressive ability to make defenders miss. That ability to create, turning no gains into modest gains and modest gains into chunk runs, is what differentiates productive running backs from the rest.
"Tuten genuinely had some of the best moves I have seen him make as a Jaguar during Wednesday's practice," Shipley wrote, "including a sick jump cut in the middle of the field that left one Panthers defender doing the splits."

TCU football is moving closer to its 2026 season opener against North Carolina in Dublin, Ireland on Aug. 29. As the Countdown to Kickoff continues, we'll highlight a former Horned Frog whose jersey number coincided with the number of days remaining until the opener. At No. 9 is former TCU wide receiver Josh Doctson!
Doctson finished his college career as TCU's record holder in receiving yards (2,785) and receiving touchdowns (29). He made 180 receptions, which places him behind Kelly Blackwell for second all-time at TCU. His career-best season came in 2015, when he made a school-record 79 catches for 1,327 yards and a school-record 14 touchdowns. He was named a First-Team All-American and a finalist for both the Biletnikoff Award and the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award. He was also named a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award.
A transfer from Wyoming, Doctson immediately caught on in his first season at TCU. In 2013, Doctson tied for the team lead in receptions (36) and led the team in receiving yards (440). He made a huge leap during TCU's run to the Big 12 co-championship in 2014, making 65 catches for 1,018 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was named an All-Big 12 Second Team selection and a semifinalist for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award. With Doctson and quarterback Trevone Boykin leading the offense, TCU went 12-1 and beat Ole Miss in the Peach Bowl.
The Washington Redskins (now Commanders) selected Doctson with a first-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Across four NFL seasons, all with Washington, Doctson reeled in 81 catches for 1,100 yards and eight scores, six of which came during the 2017 season. He made 34 appearances and 26 starts in his career, which included three years in Washington and one year with the Minnesota Vikings. He signed with the New York Jets in 2020, but opted out of the COVID season. He briefly spent time on the Arizona Cardinals practice squad in 2021.

Hayden Panettiere's troubled relationship with ex-boyfriend Brian Hickerson had one final, unexpected chapter on Aug. 16.
Hickerson, who had an on-again, off-again relationship with Panettiere in the years before her death at 36, was among those at the South Carolina apartment when she was found unresponsive, according to the police report obtained by Fox News Digital.
His presence there marked a striking final chapter in a relationship that had previously led to domestic violence charges and his eventual conviction.
Hickerson and his brother had called 911 after finding Panettiere unresponsive, according to the report. Authorities spoke to both Hickerson and his brother, Zach, and executed a search warrant at the home.

Hayden Panettiere, known to many of us as the cheerleader who couldn't be broken on Heroes and the country western star who came apart on Nashville, died this week in her South Carolina home at the age of 36. She left behind an eleven-year-old daughter called Kaya. Her cause of death is not yet known.
The public response to her death has followed a familiar refrain: the tragic trajectory of a child star whose bright light cast longer shadows. But Panettiere's story is also one of a young woman who fought hard to reclaim her narrative, and was willing to drag the darkest parts of it into the light, even when doing so made people uncomfortable.
Her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, detailed a near-death labor and postpartum psychological spiral, an opioid and alcohol addiction that predated her daughter's birth by more than a decade, and the very difficult decision to give her daughter's father, former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, full custody of their daughter in 2018. It was a story that gave a voice to a subject and a stigma that so many women have been unable to face openly for fear of shame, judgment and retribution. And perhaps that makes her sudden death all the more tragic, and opens up an important question that deserves to be confronted: what, exactly, do we mean when we say "good mother"?

The Drug Enforcement Administration has joined the investigation into the death of actress Hayden Panettiere, the New York Times and ABC News reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
CNN has reached out to the DEA and Greenville Police, which is leading the investigation, and representatives for Panettiere.
Panettiere, a onetime child star who soared to fame while navigating addiction and postpartum depression in her adult life, died Sunday at an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina.
The 36-year-old had addressed her struggles in a memoir and spoke publicly about losing her brother. Months ago, she had described feeling ready to start over, and was making a comeback, with her latest film released in January.
Earlier this week, police released a report that said Panettiere's boyfriend and his brother called 911 to say the actress was unresponsive at the apartment complex where medics would later declare her dead.

Neutrogena is facing a boycott and swarms of social media backlash over a story from Hayden Panettiere that has resurfaced after her sudden death at 36.
The Heroes star, who was the face of the popular skincare brand for about 10 years, said in her 2026 memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning that Neutrogena severed ties with her after she spoke publicly about receiving mental health treatment for postpartum depression following the birth of her daughter, Kaya, in 2014.
Panettiere alleged that her contract with the company was canceled because she revealed her PPD diagnosis on Live! with Kelly and Michael in 2015, explaining in her memoir: "Neutrogena canceled my long-standing contract, and it was yet another blow in a year that had given almost nothing else."
Upon the release of the memoir in May, the comments sparked online criticism of Neutrogena, but the brand is now facing renewed backlash after Panettiere died Sunday in Greenville, South Carolina.
One Reddit post, which has more than 5,000 upvotes, proposed a boycott against the company in honor of Panettiere. The comments echoed that attitude, with users vowing to never buy products from the company again.

Hayden Panettiere's mother, Lesley Vogel, reportedly calls out Brian Hickerson after the actress' tragic death. In a shocking statement, Vogel claimed that they have been trying to detach themselves from the on-again, off-again boyfriend "for quite some time."
