Steel and materials markets fluctuated between rallies and pullbacks as the US-Canada trade relationship shifted from near agreement to open dispute. Nucor Corporation (NYSE:NUE) and Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. (NYSE:CLF) rose on August 25, after discussions between the two countries broke down, a turnaround from the week before, when several of the same stocks fell on hopes that a new deal would decrease steel and aluminum tariffs. The VanEck Steel ETF gained 1.6% on the day, while the State Street Materials Select Sector SPDR reached an intraday high. The rise didn't last: by the end of the week, the materials ETF had slipped to negative territory, while the steel ETF was about flat, though, both remain substantially up for 2026.
The volatility traces a rapid escalation. On August 19, Bloomberg reported that the US and Canada had tentatively agreed to reduce tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 25% and vehicle charges to 15%. That optimism was dashed within days: on August 22, the US imposed 50% tariffs on a wide variety of Canadian exports, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by declaring Canada officially "at war" with the United States, saying "You're at war when you're attacked, and we got attacked."
On August 25, Ottawa announced counter-tariffs of C$27.6 billion on American goods, which took effect on September 8 at rates ranging from 15% to 50%. The dispute has continued to escalate since then, with Washington announcing additional restrictions and tariffs on Canadian goods in September, reinforcing the view that a quick resolution remains unlikely.
Atsi Sheth, Moody's chief credit officer, put it bluntly: "Expect much more of this uncertainty for some time to come." Investors initially welcomed tariffs as good news for US steelmakers facing less Canadian competition, but the back-and-forth negotiations, as well as Canada's reaction, have made predicting a steady outcome difficult.
The more intriguing story is how differently the aforementioned companies are positioned. Nucor Corporation (NYSE:NUE) relies primarily on scrap-based electric arc furnace steelmaking, while Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. (NYSE:CLF) operates a vertically integrated model with internally sourced iron ore, scrap and other raw materials. Both have meaningful domestic raw-material exposure, although their production models differ substantially. Nucor Corporation (NYSE:NUE) is up more than 50% year-to-date, while Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. (NYSE:CLF), despite similar structural insulation, remains negative for 2026, which **** ysts attribute to balance sheet stress rather than tariffs.

OTTAWA, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Thursday his government was ready to sign a trade deal with the U.S. that benefits both countries, adding any agreement would need to have stability and credibility.
"The deal that's possible, that's in the interests of Canadian workers, families and businesses, is also the deal that is in the interests of American families, American businesses, American consumers, and ... we're ready to sit down and strike that deal when the Americans are ready," Carney told reporters in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Carney dismissed recent comments by U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that Canada walked away from a trade deal because of domestic politics, saying in response to a question, "I don't think, with all respect, appointed, unelected cabinet members in the United States are experts on Canadian politics."
Carney suggested there had been a recent softening in the U.S. approach to any trade deal that could spur further discussions.
"There were a few issues that the United States was arguing right up to the last hour," he said, describing it as an "our way or the highway" attitude before talks broke down last month. "Now, they're not," he said. "So all of a sudden, they don't care about Canadian language or culture and those elements. Well, if they didn't care, they shouldn't have kept them in the deal," Carney said. "It's good. We welcome that."

US stock futures edged lower in premarket trading on Wednesday as rising oil prices and bond yields sent ripple effects across markets.
Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average (YM=F) fell 0.1%, and S&P 500 (ES=F) edged lower by 0.2%, while contracts for the Nasdaq-100 (NQ=F) slipped 0.5%, extending losses after a losing day on Wall Street.
Stocks got off to an unsteady start in September as an escalation in the war in Iran caused Brent (BZ=F) crude oil prices to jump above $95 per barrel. On Tuesday, President Trump threatened to hit Iran "much harder" if the nation retaliates against a barrage of airstrikes launched on Tuesday.
The latest flare-up in hostilities has amplified fears of rising inflation, driving up bond yields in the process. On Tuesday, the 10-year Treasury yield (^TNX) rose to 4.79%, while the 30-year (^TYX) climbed to 5.27%, affecting a range of **** ets.
A trade standoff with Canada also remained in focus, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney saying the US and Canada could resume trade discussions when Americans "stop throwing shade" and "start being serious" about negotiations. However, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent downplayed the idea that the US was in a trade war with Canada.

Tim Curry, the oddball English actor who gravitated toward playing kooky personalities like the extravagant Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the cult film "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and devilish villains like Pennywise the Clown in "It" and Mr. Hector in "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York," has died. He was 80.
Curry died peacefully at his Toluca Lake home on Wednesday, his longtime manager and friend Marcia Hurwitz confirmed. No cause of death was disclosed. Curry suffered a paralyzing stroke in 2012 that put him in a wheelchair, from which he said last year, "I've been recovering for quite a long time."
Celebrated for his versatility, cartoonish expressions and flamboyant style — all paired with a distinctly wry sense of humor — Curry soared to fame for his portrayal of the androgynous mad-scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the midnight movie "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."
Curry originated Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the London stage musical "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" in 1973. He then starred in the role in the American premiere of the production in Los Angeles in 1974 and later on Broadway in 1975, before the movie was released later that year.

TORONTO (AP) — President Donald Trump told Canadian leaders on Monday to "fall in line" or face consequences that would be "far WORSE" than the tariffs he has already imposed as Prime Minister Mark Carney accused Washington of trying to subordinate Canada.
Trump's warning on social media came as he threatened new 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel amid escalating tensions between the two countries.
Carney said U.S. trade demands had confirmed Canada's fears that Washington was seeking to dismantle its auto industry. Nonetheless, he said his country remained willing to negotiate, but only if the United States approached the talks as a partnership between sovereign countries.
"An attitude at the negotiation table that Canada is a subsidiary of the United States" is "not something we're going to accept," Carney said.
The fiery words from both sides show how relations between the U.S. and Canada have only deteriorated since Carney walked away from trade negotiations with the Trump administration late Friday, triggering the president's threatened 50% tariffs the next day on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. In response, Carney announced dollar-for-dollar retaliation beginning Sept. 8.

Nucor, Steel Dynamics, Cleveland-Cliffs and Century Aluminum are likely winners from U.S.-Canada trade talks breaking down. All four stocks were higher early Monday after tumbling last week on the prospect of a Canada trade deal that would lower U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum.
New 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, including liquor, electrical equipment and hockey gear, took effect on Saturday. Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed to retaliate "dollar for dollar," with its retaliatory tariffs starting Sept. 8 U.S. officials have threatened further escalation if that happens.
Earlier in the week, a trade deal seemed likely, with President Donald Trump late Tuesday postponing the new Canada tariffs, hours before they were set to kick in.
The U.S. and Canada seemed poised to reach a deal that would cut existing 50% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 25%, though steel imports would face limits. The U.S. also reportedly would cut duties on Canadian autos to 15% and scrap a 10% lumber tariffs.
The prospective of lower tariffs slammed U.S. steel stocks. Nucor (NUE) fell 5.85% on Wednesday and 9.4% for the week, tumbling from near a buy point to below its 50-day moving average. Steel Dynamics (STLD) dived 7.5% on Wednesday and 10.6% for the week, even with Friday's 4.4% bounce. STLD stock is now far below its 50-day line. Cleveland-Cliffs (CLF) sank 6% on Wednesday and 5.3% for the week, regaining its 50-day line on Friday.

Waldemar Anton (training management), Maxi Beier (knee injury), and Carney Chukwuemeka (muscle issues) were unable to play in the season opener against AS Roma. Beier has already returned this week. "Waldi is also ready to train fully with the team and play in Saturday's game," said Kovac. Carney Chukwuemeka took part in team training for the first time on Thursday. "Maybe he'll be an option for the weekend." Emre Can (torn cruciate ligament) and Nico Schlotterbeck (ankle) remain sidelined.
Particular attention is being paid to new signings Giannis Konstantelias and Joey Veerman, who joined BVB at the start of the week. "Giannis isn't arriving until tonight and will train with the team for the first time tomorrow," said Kovac. "Joey has only had two or three training sessions with the team. Giannis hasn't had any yet. Still, I know they're physically fit and have playing time under their belts. I see no reason not to include them in the roster."
Veerman is a "similar type of player to Felix Nmecha – very confident on the ball. Someone who demands and seeks out every ball. That's what we need in the transition from defense to attack," Kovac said about his midfield. "Sabi and Jobe are the two players who are similar in style. We have a good mix."
Although Konstantinos Karetsas is also new to BVB, he already has two friendly matches under his belt with his new teammates. "In the games against ******* nal and Roma, we already saw what Kosta can do with the ball – how he sets up his teammates but also how he can make himself a key player. That's what we were looking for," explains the BVB coach. "But at 18, he still has a lot to learn. The leap from the Belgian league is a big one. That's why we'll bring him along carefully."
It remains to be seen who Kovac will actually field in the battle for the season's first ******* le. At the very least, the coach is spoiled for choice.Christina Reinke

CALGARY, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Canadian pipeline firms are proposing billions of dollars in new projects despite oil sands companies being reluctant to commit to significant production expansions amid ongoing uncertainty around climate policies and long-term global demand.
At least six different pipeline projects are underway or proposed in Canada, to move oil to the United States or to export markets on the Pacific coast. If all are built, the country's export pipeline capacity would increase by 45%, or 2.25 million barrels per day, by 2035, according to a Reuters calculation.
But filling all those pipes would require Canadian oil supply to increase by more than a third by 2034, a near-doubling of its current annual average growth rate. It would also require Canadian producers to move ahead with major new oil sands projects of the type that no company has undertaken in more than a decade.
The mismatch between proposed export pipeline expansions and the pace of output growth highlights how Canada may struggle to achieve Prime Minister Mark Carney's "energy superpower" ambitions, despite a more supportive regulatory environment and growing interest in Canadian oil from international buyers.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is the latest global official to express distrust in FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
Carney spoke on Wednesday, August 5 in Toronto during a press conference about affordable housing and was asked about his thoughts on Infantino, who days earlier scrapped a controversial proposal to sell a minority stake in FIFA to private investors. Carney spent time with Infantino this summer, as Canada was a co-host of the World Cup with the United States and Mexico.
"I've run a few organizations in my time. The idea that proper governance is not to disclose to your closest advisors your chief operating officer, your fellow board members something of consequence that you're even considering let alone proposing, that's fatal, should be fatal," he said.
He continued by noting that FIFA has "their own procedures for making those determinations, but certainly I don't have confidence in Mr. Infantino after this point given what transpired and given the nature of what transpired."
Carney pointed to Carlos Cordeiro, a top advisor to Infantino, not being consulted on the deal and resigning after controversy ensued as evidence that the way Infantino is leading FIFA is problematic.

We're on Day 42 in our countdown to the New Orleans Saints' season opener with the Detroit Lions, which means we had to make a difficult choice for the Saints Play of the Day. 42 yards is how far the first throw traveled in the infamous "River City Relay," getting the desperate New Orleans offense out of their own territory and putting the Jacksonville Jaguars defense on its heels as time ran out in Week 16. You can watch it for yourself right here.
But it wasn't the only pass completed that afternoon. After Aaron Brooks went deep to Donte Stallworth, the wide receiver lateraled to his teammate Michael Lewis, who picked up 7 yards; by that time, running back Deuce McAllister had worked his way downfield to take the pitch. McAllister gained another 5 yards and found Jerome Pathon wide open with a clean path to the end zone. Pathon ran the last 21 yards to score a touchdown, stunning everyone in the stadium and watching from home.
Of course we know what happened next. John Carney trotted out to kick what should've been the tying extra point to send the game to overtime. But he shanked it, Jacksonville won the day, and New Orleans left with an embarrassing loss.
That wasn't the end of anyone's story. Carney spent the three years with the Saints and even appeared in eight games with the Jaguars later in his career, only to return to New Orleans in time for their Super Bowl run in 2009. He did a solid job filling in for Garrett Hartley early that season until the young pro got back on the field in December, at which point he stuck around as a "kicking consultant." At the time, Carney was just the sixth player in NFL history to appear in 300 regular season games. He made a lot of great memories with New Orleans, even if this afternoon in Jacksonville wasn't one of them.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday that Canada is intensifying negotiations with the United States to reach a comprehensive trade deal but is prepared to respond should President Donald Trump's threat of 50% tariffs on Canadian goods go into effect.
The new tariffs, announced by Trump on Monday, are scheduled to come into effect Aug. 19.
"If these tariffs, or other measures come into force, there's a full range of things that we can do in that regard," Ca rney said after meeting with Canada's premiers and territorial leaders in Charletown, Prince Edward Island.
Carney said "everything's on the table" if an agreement can't be reached before the tariffs kick in.
"We don't need to respond in advance," he said. "In fact, I think it would be counterproductive at this stage to respond in advance."

DETROIT — The Mid-American Conference college football coaches anticipate more of the same from Kent State this season.
The Golden Flashes were picked to finish eighth in the MAC preseason coaches poll released during the conference's media day at Ford Field on July 22. At 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the MAC, Kent State finished in a three-way tie with Akron and Buffalo for sixth in 2025.
The eighth-place position is a much better slot than the Flashes had going into last year. Coming off a 0-12 season in 2024, Kent State was picked to finish last in the 13-team conference.
Under then-interim head coach Mark Carney, the Flashes ended a 21-game losing streak and came within one win of becoming bowl eligible. Carney was named the team's full-time head coach after the season.
The MAC's head coaches voted in the poll, but they were not allowed to vote for their own teams.

Dongfeng Motor is preparing to enter Canada's electric vehicle (EV) market, capitalising on a low-tariff quota negotiated by Prime Minister Mark Carney earlier this year.
The Chinese state-owned manufacturer will display EV models at a Montreal event this week and is currently pursuing certification for its vehicles with Canadian regulators.
Julie Mazorra Fernández, director of North World Industry – the firm set to distribute Dongfeng vehicles in Canada – was quoted in a Bloomberg report as saying the company anticipates launching its first two models next year.
In 2024, Carney's predecessor, Justin Trudeau, introduced a 100% tariff on Chinese-manufactured EVs, layered atop the existing 6.1% rate, which effectively excluded Chinese brands from the Canadian market and prompted Tesla to restructure its supply arrangements.
Carney struck a deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping in January to suspend the 100% surtax on as many as 49,000 Chinese-made EVs for an initial 12-month period, with China agreeing in return to lift its own tariffs on select Canadian farm exports.

The cause of death of an American woman found dead in a scenic Irish town earlier this week has been revealed, according to a report.
Jamey Carney, 43, a New York native who moved to Ireland in 2021, died from suffocation after suffering head injuries, according to a report by The Irish Times, which cited the Irish state pathologist Dr. Linda Mulligan.
Initial reports suggested she had been beaten to death, but the newspaper reported the post-mortem found that suffocation — not her head injuries — caused her death. Police are investigating her death as a murder.

Canada has chosen a German defence company to build its navy's new submarine fleet, in the largest military procurement deal in Canadian history.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Monday that the government had chosen the company TKMS for the multi-billion dollar, 12-vessel contract.
The announcement comes just before Carney leaves for a Nato summit in Turkey, where members are expect to face pressure to show they are boosting defence investment. Since taking office, Carney has **** ped Canada's defence spending to 2% of gross domestic product (GDP), and has committed to reaching 5% by 2035.
According to the government, only one in four of Canada's submarines is currently seaworthy.
The country - which has the longest coastline in the world - is growing increasingly concerned about climate change warming Arctic waters and opening up new fronts for adversaries to attack.

Canada’s story in the 2026 World Cup is over but Prime Minister Mark Carney believes the team has done the country proud.
With so much attention paid to fellow co-hosts in the shape of the United States and Mexico, it would perhaps be fair to say that the Canada team have somewhat slipped under the radar on a global scale.
Still, that won’t matter to Canada fans who have seen Jesse Marsch’s team break new ground in this competition.
Heading into the 2026 World Cup, Canada had never won a game on this stage. Now, they exit having reached the last 16.
Speaking after Canada’s loss to Morocco in Houston, Carney expressed his pride despite his country seeing their dream for further progression ended.

Jamie Dimon doesn't think Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's vision for a coalition of middle powers is grounded in economic reality.
Speaking during the Council on Foreign Relations' CEO Speaker Series (1), the JPMorgan Chase CEO drew laughs after dismissing Carney's proposal that countries should work more closely together to counter growing pressure from global superpowers.
"When Mark Carney said the powers should get together, it's a fantasy," Dimon said.
Earlier in 2026, former Bank of Canada and Bank of England governor Carney first outlined the strategy (2) during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, where he argued that middle powers should deepen cooperation on trade, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, supply chains and security as the decades-old U.S.-led world order becomes increasingly fragmented.

It's the move we've been expecting, but the NCAA D1 cabinet has approved a new five-year eligibility model, which will be finalized today.
The age criteria is designed to limit the return of athletes in their mid-20s to complete eligibility. It will be interesting to see how it impacts athletes who take a post-graduate year before college- if those athletes are 17, the new rule won't dissuade them, but others might have to make a choice.
Removing redshirts is going to be especially helpful in handling injury concerns, especially in-season injuries. Schools won't have to worry about wasting seasons of eligibility so situations like we saw with Luke Carney last Fall wouldn't come with long-term implications. Need a young player to play, well sitting them isn't gaining you anything so let them play.
The new rule will also address the inequality among sports when it came to redshirts. Football can play four games but others sports are one competition and done. It seems pretty straight forward, but of course there are already lawyers threatening lawsuits for the just graduated group of athletes and I'm sure we'll hear from junior college athletes down the road as well.
Will this impact the competitive balance? It's way too early to predict but having a team of 5th year athletes has often helped mid-major programs, but if the portal isn't changing that seems to negate that advantage.

Canada thrashed nine-man Qatar 6-0 to secure their first ever World Cup victory on Thursday as Switzerland reignited their campaign with a resounding defeat of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Tournament co-hosts Canada had lost all six of their previous matches at the World Cup, at the 1986 and 2022 finals, but brought that run of losses to a halt in spectacular fashion at Vancouver's BC Place Stadium.
With Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney -- wearing a replica Canada shirt -- among a fired-up crowd, Jesse Marsch's side ran riot to secure a win that leaves them needing only a point against Switzerland to finish top of Group B.
A hat-trick from Juventus striker Jonathan David, one goal apiece from Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba, and a Mohammad Manai own goal sealed Canada's win.
The victory was marred though by a serious left leg injury to midfielder Ismael Kone, who was stretchered off after being clumsily upended by Qatar's ***** im Madibo in the 51st minute.

In their first World Cup match for 28 years, the Norwegian national team faced underdogs Iraq. Julian Ryerson started on the right-hand side of defence, as usual. There were slight doubts about the Scandinavians’ chances of winning the match when the Iraqis managed to equalise in the 39th minute following Erling Haaland’s opener (29). Another goal from Haaland (43), along with goals from Leo Østigard (76) and an own goal in stoppage time, sealed Norway’s comfortable 4-1 victory.
Jordan caused the Austrian team more of a headache. With Marcel Sabitzer in the starting line-up for the Red-White-Reds, the match developed into an evenly matched contest. Austria took the lead through Romano Schmid (20), but Jordan equalised early in the second half (50). The turning point came with the introduction of BVB forward Carney Chukwuemeka in the 60th minute. The Austrians subsequently dominated the match and ultimately won 3-1 in the closing stages following a Jordanian own goal (78) and a penalty from Arnautovic in stoppage time.
Global superstar Lionel Messi put on a masterclass, so Dortmund defender Ramy Bensebaini was left empty-handed at the end of the first matchday for Algeria. In the clash in Kansas City between Algeria and Argentina, the best player of the last World Cup scored all three goals for the Albiceleste. Bensebaini, who had recovered in time for the clash with the reigning world champions after a lengthy injury lay-off, played the full 90 minutes in Algeria’s central defence.

Borussia Dortmund are potentially in the market for an attacking midfielder this summer, and AS Roma’s Matias Soulé features on the Bundesliga side’s shortlist, Sky Germany understands.
Initial talks have already taken place between Dortmund and the Argentine’s representatives regarding Soulé, who scored six goals and provided five ***** ists in 33 Serie A games as Roma secured a return to UEFA Champions League football for the upcoming season.
The 23-year-old reportedly has a release clause between €25m and €30m, although the Ruhr club face competition from Premier League clubs.
With Julian Brandt departing Dortmund upon the expiry of his contract after seven seasons, Carney Chukwuemeka slowly working his way into Niko Kovač’s plans and Samuele Inácio still developing, Dortmund’s interest in Soulé isn’t too far fetched. Additionally, reports originating from Italy suggest that Roma are open to selling Soulé as they look to raise funds before 30 June.

TORONTO (AP) — A new Canadian-built bridge across the Detroit River that U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to block will open soon, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Gordie Howe International Bridge, jointly owned by Canada and the U.S. state of Michigan, is set to take place on Friday, while the bridge itself is expected to open to traffic later this month.
In February, Trump demanded that Canada turn over at least half the ownership of the bridge to the U.S. federal government and agree to other unspecified demands in one of his many salvos over cross-border trade issues.
The bridge, which would connect Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, and would be a vital economic artery between Canada and the United States, had been expected to open early this year, according to information on the project's website.
The bridge is named after Howe, the late Canadian hockey great who spent 25 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings.
